Elon Musk: El Impulsor detrás de Tesla

This doesn't even make sense in context. The Wright Brothers pioneered the airplane, and Zephram Cochrane invented human warp engines in the Star Trek universe. What world-changing mode of transportation had Elon Musk "invented" by 2016, when this was written? Or what was he claiming to be close to building at this point, that would merit this inclusion? Expensive electric cars that are demonstrably worse than any others? That thing where he was going to put bullet trains in tunnels? The "electric plane" line from that Iron Man movie? Him possibly tweeting, then deleting, "What if like a tractor, but...steam powered? By lasers? Is that already a thing? God I'm high."?

He didn't launch that Tesla Roadster into space until after this episode aired, so it wasn't that. Besides, I doubt Future Socialist Space People would be impressed by stupid self-promotional, space-polluting, primitive 21st-century oligarch shit like that.

What are they crediting Elon Musk for, here, is my point? The traditional Star Trek formula for a line like this is one old timey Earth history reference, one in-universe Star Trek lore reference, then a third made-up thing that sounds impressive and alien. Like "Dr. Halcyon of planet Deneb VII." And there is a REASON THEY DO THAT.

TNG had Stephen Hawking as a guest star, as a great scientist / mathematician, on the Holodeck. But he had tons of verifiable accolades by that point. He was well-established as a pioneering, genius intellect. You can criticize his work, or course, but you can't argue now, and couldn't then, that it wasn't brilliant and influential.

This Discovery episode was written in 2016 / 2017. I realize Musk is well known as a credit-stealing, racist sack of garbage now, and was probably still just a beloved quirky billionaire, pre-Pandemic, to most people, at this time.

But it's not like we didn't know what he was by this point. He's been shit forever. That isn't a new thing.

Whoever wrote this knew he was probably watching this show, and put this in entirely to suck him off. "Maybe he'll invite me to a cool party with models!", they thought, not realizing that Elon Musk doesn't have cool parties with models, he just sleeps at work, so he can be next to the emotionally-fragile women he's hired specifically so he can derail their careers if they don't let him fill them with sperm.

Discovery was (is? Is it over yet?) a infuriatingly bad Star Trek show, written and produced by people who demonstrably suck at their jobs, and neither understand nor respect this IP. So fine, whatever, more of the same. But this is dogshit even for the guys who make dogshit for a living. Come the fuck on.

The irony of the second half of that speech accurately describing Elon Musk now, though, is pretty fun. Narcissistic little sociopathic fungus man, indeed.
