Today We Honor Eric B. & Rakim
In 1987, during the golden era of hip-hop culture, there was a seismic shift in the complexity of rap activated by Eric B. & Rakim and their album Paid in Full.
Rakim introduced internal rhyme schemes that pushed rap into new directions and challenged every MC that followed.
“I was shooting for something different,” Rakim told NPR in 2009. “You know, like, some of my influence was John Coltrane. I played the sax as well. So, listening to him play in the different rhythms that he had, I was trying to write my rhymes as if I was a saxophone player.”
Tom Terrell of NPR called them “the most influential DJ/MC combo in contemporary pop music period.”
Paid In Full was ground breaking and paved the way for MCs who elevated the culture.

Those in italics have five or more pieces of usable visual, written, or audio propaganda already. If you have any visuals like photos or videos, or if you have something to say in words, submit it to this blog before round one begins on June 25th!
If you don't see a name you submitted here, it's because most or all of their career was as a child/they were too young for the cutoff, their career was almost entirely after 1979, or music was something they only dabbled in and are hardly known for. There are quite a few ladies on the list whose primary career wasn't "recording artist" or "live musician," but released several albums or were in musical theater, so they've been accepted.

We often speak to the histories and afterlives of slavery and how the multigenerational traumas and intimate violence of Jim & Jane Crow still resonate and ripple across the Diaspora . . . but we don’t take enuf (enough) time to showcase the breadth of resilience, miracles, and magic nurtured in our community. In post-slavery world, Blacks folks of all shades and sizes found moments in the sun where they could shape their new world and capture their humanity through the emerging field of photography.
Looking at this collection, I am reminded of when March Church Terrell declared that Black folks “are the only human beings in the world with fifty-seven varieties of complexions who are classed together as a single racial unit. Therefore, we are really truly colored people, and that is the only name in the English language which accurately describes us.”
- Lester Doss (1870s - 1930s)
- Carrie Vann (1897)
- Ella Dawson (1870s - 1930s)
- Unidentified woman sitting with dog (1910)
- Mrs. D. Welch and two children (1870s - 1930s)
- Pvt. Paul Schrader of Ottawa, Kansas, and Three Soldiers of the 23rd Volunteer Infantry (1898-1899)
- Lewis Hamilton and [His Best] Girl (1896)
- Little George and R. Smith (1894)
- Mrs. Startler (1900)

i like john prine and iris dement’s duets… as much as i also like duet teams where both people have technically & conventionally beautiful voices (johnny cash and june carter, ella fitzgerald and louis armstrong, marvin gaye and tammi terrell, etc) i also think it’s nice to hear two people with kind of weird but charming voices sing a love song together. and i think in spite of ourselves is a particularly sweet love song too :)

HIV and the Journey Toward Zero Part 1 from Journey Towards Zero on Vimeo.
"HIV and the Journey Toward Zero" sparks important conversations around the end of the HIV epidemic. What does “the end” mean for those who have been there from the start, those living with HIV today and those leading the way to an HIV-free future?
"HIV and the Journey Toward Zero" spotlights the perspective of some of Chicago’s most prominent activists. The film is presented in partnership with the Chicago Department of Public Health, Tessa Films and local community organizations. Join us as we hear from long-term survivors, newly diagnosed individuals, clinicians, researchers and community leaders — the voices that, together, can make HIV history.
