20. Clumsy attempts at flirting
Gregory didn’t consider himself a history buff, but he had a thing for acts of heroism in the looming face of disaster. Sully Sullenberger’s Flight 1549, of course. The 1983 Soviet false alarm incident. And, a perennial favorite: the Antarctica expeditions.
“Have you heard of Lawrence Oates?” Gregory asked Jacob in the break room. Ideally, this line of questioning would generate a very agreeable series of events. Jacob would say no. Gregory would tell Jacob about the Antarctic explorer Lawrence Oates. Impressed by Gregory’s history knowledge, Jacob would leave the interaction thinking, Gregory is so smart. This compels me to start picking up on the increasingly obvious signs that he, Gregory, is romantically interested in me, Jacob.
Instead, Jacob raised his eyebrows and said, “The Terra Nova expedition, right? ‘I am just going outside, and may be some time’?”
Gregory’s heart sank. “Yeah,” he said. “He sacrificed himself for the rest of his party.”
“But they all died from hypothermia anyway,” Jacob said. “Honestly, I feel like Britain clung to these narratives of individual heroism out of, like, nationalism?” He took a sip of his coffee. “Still, it’s a fun story. I didn’t take you for a history guy, Greggeroni.”
“Oh, I dabble here and there,” Gregory said. He suppressed a wince. I dabble here and there? Come on, Gregory.
“I guess that’s just another thing we have in common! No wonder we’re best friends!” Jacob said brightly. He clapped Gregory on the shoulder and got up from the sofa, taking his coffee mug to the sink. “I gotta run in a min’, but I’ll see you on the flippity-flip.”
Gregory watched as Jacob shot him finger-guns. He continued watching as Jacob rinsed his coffee mug and headed out the door. This had been a mistake. An unmitigated disaster.
Maybe next time, he would try telling Jacob about the Battle of Agincourt.

whats your fav historical boat and why ??:)
Hello 🙂 I'm so glad you've asked this question and I promise to be extremely normal about it 🙂
I can find something to love in almost every polar and/or nautical expedition, but nothing has captured my attention and my heart like the Karluk, the flagship of the Canadian Arctic Expedition.
The ship herself was a disaster. Built in 1884 as a fishing vessel, she was repurposed as a whaler in 1892, then acquired by Stefansson in 1913 for the bargain bin price of $10,000. The Karluk was uniquely unsuited for polar exploration-- she was old, rickety, and had what chief engineer John Munro described as a "coffee pot of an engine" that was so ineffective that icebreaking was out of the question. Captain Bartlett almost refused to take her north, but in the end, he acceded to Stefansson's demands. He would come to regret this decision.
In the least surprising turn of events ever, the Karluk became trapped in the pack only a month into the voyage, hundreds of miles from her destination. She remained there until she succumbed to the pressure of the ice and sank five months later, setting the stage for one of the most unbelievable survival stories in the history of polar exploration.
Why the Karluk? For me, it's that the ship was such a perfect metaphor for the expedition itself, which is not always the case! For example-- Terra Nova was overloaded and leaked like a sieve, but the expedition she supported was meticulously planned. Endurance could not withstand the pressure of the pack, but even so, her entire crew survived. The Karluk, though? A nightmare ship with a nightmare (derogatory) leader and a nightmare (affectionate) crew for a nightmare expedition. No part of this should have worked, and it's a miracle that anyone made it home. If not for the selfless actions and basic human decency of a select few crew members and the kindness and generosity of the Indigenous peoples of the Arctic, no one would ever know what happened to them.
Stefansson was simply the worst leader imaginable for a venture like this. He was smug, aloof, selfish, willing to play games with the lives of his men, and hopelessly out of his depth. He failed to adequately provision the expedition, a decision that would prove fatal. The crew he hired were a mix of polar veterans with substance abuse and/or ego problems, Indigenous people (including a family with 2 small children), untested men recruited off the docks, and inexperienced scientists not coping well with the rigors of exploration, among others. I need you to understand that these are my boys and I love them, but they were a MESS. The atmosphere on the Karluk and in the subsequent camps was a toxic sludge of fear and anger and paranoia and egos. No one here was elevated by their suffering, there was no code of honor keeping the men in line, and there were painfully few moral leaders setting examples for the others. With apologies to The Terror, survival was a nasty piece of business. To top it all off, Stefansson abandoned the Karluk and her crew after the ship became frozen in. He went on a "hunting trip" but conveniently failed to return. Leadership!
Hopefully this helps to explain why the Karluk is a perfect metaphor for this part of the Canadian Arctic Expedition. Only an old, crumbling whaler with a tiny, ineffective engine could have shepherded this disaster team to the shores of Wrangel Island. The Karluk was not the ship they needed, but she was the ship they had, and even Captain Bartlett grieved as she sank.
For more information, I highly recommend checking out The Ice Master by Jennifer Niven and Empire of Ice and Stone by Buddy Levy. I also Karlukpost regularly, and you can find my screeching in the Karluk tag.
I hope this answered your question, thanks for a fun ask! ❤️

Name: Icarus “Russ” Castellanos Species: Siren Occupation: Pizza Chef at Sly Slice Age: 26 Years Old Played By: Jake Face Claim: Brenton Thwaites
"Am I a monster? Or is this what it means to be a person?"
TW: Parental death
Icarus ‘Russ’ Castellanos is from a fierce, reclusive, and traditional siren colony along the northern coast of Newfoundland. His people hunt the fog covered seas for fisherman and adventurous sightseers in the wilderness of their island home in relative seclusion in their small town located deep in the woodlands of Terra Nova. Though Icarus was very different from his people. While it wasn’t uncommon to integrate within human cities, it was usually a means to an end, Feeding on human hearts. The young Icarus on his hunt found a homestead owned by an elderly couple, the two men musicians, one a singer/guitarist and the other a pianist. He’d often hide in the trees and tall grass and listen to their music for as long as they played. Taking keen interest in their strange instruments. Their songs and music were very unlike the birdsongs of his people and it enticed him.
So much did young Icarus’ curiosity grow that he began to sneak into the nearby town, adopting a disguise as a vagrant youth. Stopping by a diner with an old timey record player. He wasn’t fond of human food, but the waitress there always gave him free coffee, a treat he began to enjoy, the bitterness often staving off the craving for their beating hearts. He found joy in experiencing the culture of the humans. The vibrancies of their culture, the songs of their people, and the joy brought about by art and song. All of these things made Icarus’ heart full and he only wanted more. Yet his time in the city was incredibly lonely and with no place to stay he’d return to the woods and back to his people. He’d be lectured and scorned by his colony, told that the only ‘enjoyment’ found from a human was in consuming their heart. This didn’t sit well with Icarus and those feelings festered a general feeling of ‘not belonging’ until he adventured out on his own.
Fleeing from his homeland he went far into the city of St. John. He donned his human disguise once more, venturing into the port city to see all that he could. Visiting cafes, museums, libraries, and seeing as many musical performances in the local area as he could. Taking stark note of the horrible stories written about his people, but at the same time fascinated by what the humans created, their art and song most of all! He would often scribble in a journal the things he had seen or whatever inspired him be it poems, art, or music. He found a natural drawing towards the latter, and through that interest Icarus found friends! The homeless, standoffish Icarus finds camaraderie in ‘not belonging’ with three humans. Davis, Luke, and Kayleigh. The four were good friends visiting many of the port's more ‘under the radar’ venues. He had learned that Kayleigh’s father went missing at sea, herself believing it was sirens. Though the other two often mocked her belief in ‘fairy tales’, Icarus harbored a growing belief that he was at fault. Recognizing why his people were seen as monsters, and why he too was one…
As the group grew closer Icarus would often show them his poems, drawing, and lyrics but never perform for them, fearing what would happen. However, he would eventually give into that peer pressure and accidentally enthrall them. He was sickened at how he enthralled his best friends, even more so by that mouth watering desire to consume their hearts as he’d done so many times in his youth. So scared of his own nature he fled, his friends none the wiser to their enthrallment. Icarus vowed to never sing again, especially not to his friends, though they would frequently ask to hear from his lovely singing voice again he knew he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if something bad happened. Continuously lying to his friends, they could never know the truth.
Despite his best attempts at concealment, the truth comes out eventually. During an incident where he and his friends visited a festival outside of town, his true form was revealed. Finding out first hand how mirrors show a siren's true form, his monstrous visage was revealed to Kayleigh when the two were exploring a haunted house and entered a house of mirrors. The panicked Kayleigh shrieked, and despite his best efforts to comfort her. Razor claws and dagger like teeth were of no comfort to a scared girl, His friends Davis and Luke jumped to her defense protecting her from Icarus, that meant her no harm. His friends saw him for what he really was… A monster. The look on their faces was all he needed to know he’d never be accepted amongst them, and so, heartbroken and sobbing, he flew. He flew until his wings hurt, across the land, across the sea, far enough away he couldn’t be recognized. Somewhere where his people were nothing but legends in books, and so he came upon Wickeds Rest.
To the people of Wicked's Rest, “Russ” is just a normal guy. A starving artist trying to make ends meet. The standoffish cook at Sly Slice though he’s not a big fan of the job he enjoys its simplicity, often thinking of the next chords to a song or the next line of a poem. He’s a music fan, often frequenting downtown before and after work. A frequent customer at The Vinyl Countdown, and MuertArte, and The Siren’s Song. His apartment near Harborside allows him to go out to the docks and cliffs and occasionally stretch his wings, and feast upon fish hearts (His substitute for human hearts). He’s a gentle soul and many would assume him quiet. It’s clear he’s passionate about his craft though rarely shares it, and when he does it will never be through a performance. He has a meager, simplistic life, though it’s clear he has more than one chip on his shoulder. Is Wicked's Rest a place he can finally find happiness? Or is it yet another tragic chapter waiting to end?
Character Facts:
Personality: Haunted, lonely, eloquent, sensitive, curious, gentle
Vastly prefers to go by ‘Russ’ as it's a more modern nickname. He barely responds to the name now, so accustomed is he to the nickname.
A creative mind. He is often distracted thinking of his next poem, drawing, or cords of a song. Though he is loath to show others his work, it’s clear he’s passionate about it.
Frequents poetry slams, open mic nights, and small indie shows though he will never openly participate for fear of exposing himself as a siren. Though his heart yearns to participate, doing so would end badly.
Born to a siren colony to the northeast in Newfoundland, his family was particularly traditional, feeding off sailors that traveled too far into the dense fog and mist on an early morning. Icarus, however, was entranced by human culture and desired to live amongst them. Even venturing into the city of St. Johns on a few occasions. Meeting a few friends through mutual interests, though still learning human social cues he managed to endear a few humans to befriend him. When they wanted to hear his songs he’d been working on he accidentally enthralled them leading to them figuring out his identity. He was reamed as a monster, exposing his true form and his friends fled in terror.
See’s himself and his people as monsters, but wants to overcome the traditions and nature his colony instilled in him. Working as a chef allows him to feast on scraps of meat and leftovers from the pizzeria. He adores fish and even though it’s nothing like a human’s heart. He claims to his family it’s just as good and he’s doing fine in Wicked’s rest.
Adores Coffee and other bitter foods. Typically drinks his coffee black, finding the bitterness soothing the cravings for human meat.
Has a few ‘bird’ like mannerisms. Often whistling when idle or cooking pizza in the back of Sly’s. Is particular about keeping clean, ‘preening’ over his jacket, clothing, and hair like a bird would its feathers. He likes to feed birds the leftover bread from Sly’s. He is uncomfortable around cats.

25/2/24
Went downtown with mum today, walked a lot and managed to eat barely anything. Felt so good while everyone else was eating and I was clutching my coffee.
Went to the shops, got some clothes.
I got so many comments about my weight, from my mother, who usually goes on a rant about her weight and how she needs to lose so much of it while "you're one to talk, you're getting so skinny so easily"
As if it's easy.
Random women chimed in, I was holding a dress which was saying size small but it looked more like a medium and I said so. Apparently one woman next to me was shocked to have that be my issue while "looking like that". Another told me I could wear anything with this body.
It all went to hell -major breakdown in a fitting room at Terra Nova- when I had to switch from an xxs pair of pants to an xs one. This meal plan bollocks ruined everything and I'm still not back to where I was.
Alas.
Small rant because nothing exciting happens, the days do not pass and I feel like I can't achieve anything.

Mason couldn’t sleep.
It just wasn’t his usual phoenix proclivities that stopped him falling into slumber – he’d pushed himself to the limits on the training deck, went as hard as he could against anyone who was willing to take a match. Even Maddox, eyes alight, relishing the opportunity to repeatedly throw Mason to the mats still hadn’t been enough to dispel the restless energy plaguing him.
He was sore and tired and while his body yearned for rest, it was his mind that wouldn’t shut the fuck up.
His mind… and maybe something else square inside his chest that ached in a particular way he couldn’t quite put a finger on.
Fuck. He needed to rest. He needed to close his eyes and shut himself down enough so that he would at least not look like a corpse in front of the captain at their meeting in the next duty cycle. Mason was self-aware and vain enough to know without Cerberus’s continued maintenance, he wouldn’t always be a beacon of physical perfection.
And somehow, what the captain thought… mattered.
Mason didn’t know when it happened. He didn’t understand when his axis started to tilt. Somehow all the most important things he’d aligned himself to didn’t seem so important at all. All that was right was still right… but also just a little bit wrong
The last time he had felt like this, he had followed his instincts. He had listened to the voice screaming inside him and he’d walked away from his unit, from Cerberus.
And he’d survived.
The band on his finger burned. He itched to take it off and then wondered why. It felt like a lie, just a cheap grab for normality in a time when the entire universe was falling apart. It was supposed to represent a promise, but it wasn’t a promise Mason wanted to keep anymore.
And fuck. That was the rub of it, wasn’t it? Absence hadn’t made the heart grow fonder. Absence had only proved to him he was better off this way.
He just... simply wasn’t in love with Sabre anymore.
He was in love with the Captain. He was in love with Isaac.
Surprisingly, the realization came with an overwhelming wash of relief. Once he had finally admitted it to himself, it felt less like a burden, less like a weight on his chest and more like simple this is how it is. It was an undeniable fact. The interest had always been there – Mason was curious about the captain for the sheer reason he wasn’t curious about Mason or his phoenix roots. At all. For Mason, the lack of interest had been refreshing. It was a boon. And then they started finding each other around the ship more – first the meetings, then the runs, the poker nights, the shared whispered burdens and the shared coffee – an occasional midnight bump-into-each-other-in-the-mess. Isaac had started to open up and so had Mase.
And he hadn’t had to fight for it.
He learned about the captain, his childhood on the farm, his spitfire for a mother, his hard fought battles as a part of the alliance – his climb through the ranks. Mason had learned other things too. Luca’s secret parentage, Isaac’s love of books, about the dogs he had waiting for him back on Terra Nova, his mildly embarrassed confession that sometimes he liked to play guitar alongside his son.
Mason had learned more about the captain in the space of a few weeks than he ever had about his husband in all the years he’d known him.
And the more he learned, the more he enjoyed and a little bit closer he got to the edge until he was helpless and slipping. He’d gone over and now here he was, smashed on the rocks.
And fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. They were in the middle of a war, neither of them had time for this.
Still, Mason conjured up the captain’s face, his dark eyes, his tanned skin, his unmistakable wide jaw – when he frowned, Mason wanted to stand at his shoulder and offer support. When he laughed, Mason wanted to laugh right along with him.
How ridiculous to go and fall in love with a man Mason knew for a fact, was absolutely, utterly straight.
“He’s practically engaged to the fury,” Mason told his reflection in the mirror. “He’s straight. You’re being a fucking moron.”
His reflection agreed. But his reflection also showed him just how hard only the mere thought of the captain had made him.
It felt wrong, but it felt right too when Mason finally reached to take himself in hand. His thick cock was aching, already half hard at just the memory of the captain’s secret smile. Mason had been with a lot of men and women, passed around for his body in pleasure as much as for his body in a fight and a tiny part of him wished he could be the one to show the captain how good two men could be together. He’d show Isaac everything - strip him slowly, touch him everywhere, stroke him... delve into the places he’d probably never allowed himself to feel pleasure in.
God. Mason knew he could make it so good. Good enough to make him forget the Fury. Good enough to make him come back for more. Good enough that maybe, just maybe, he would allow Mason to claim him for good.
Mason sighed. It was a nice fantasy - if an utterly unachievable one. His interest dick before was now standing hard and proud and rock fucking hard.
What the fuck was he supposed to do with this?
The captain wouldn’t know, surely, Mason told himself, curling his fist and giving a practised stroke – Mason was tired of trying to ignore it. Tired of trying to tell himself he was unaffected. Tired of the long nights lying tortured in his bed.
What the captain didn’t know couldn’t hurt him. He would never know Mason was there on his ship, jerking off to the memory of his voice, his broad shoulders, his knowing eyes and warm smile all the more precious for how rare it was.
The captain didn’t have to know. Mason’s absent husband didn’t have to know. It was only Mason, lingering in his weak shame and fierce desire holding his dick in his hands and grunting as his bed sheets splattered with load after load.
Eventually, he slept.
#idk its been on his mind a lot#just.. obsessed at this whole concept as a whole and idky he just is

CRIT & COFFEE: DAWN OF A NEW BREW
Prelúdio
Ano 120 A.C.C. – A Era do Café.
As pragas recuaram, as colheitas cresceram, e o café voltou a fluir... brevemente. No ano seguinte, a produção caiu 10%, e a hiperinflação devastou o mercado.
youtube

"Estamos a fazer história (...).

Chloe

for 2 ocs of your choice
what deadly sin do they represent
are they petty and jealous
their dream wedding
favorite drink
what scares them the most
Thank you for the questions! I'm going to choose my Grace Mason (Falling Skies) OC and my Michael Taylor (Terra Nova) OC.
what deadly sin do they represent
I'd say Michael is lust. The whole crux of his story is he would do anything for Alicia, the woman he longs for. I think pretty much his main motivation through both the stories I've written is his feelings for Alicia and how he wants to protect her and be with her.
Grace is wrath. She has a lot of anger and frustration inside which can lead her into trouble, with her friends and her enemies.
are they petty and jealous
Even though these are quite unattractive traits, I have to say that Michael can be these things. He can hold grudges, but he learns to forgive and understand the other person's POV. He is jealous of Jim when he becomes Michael's father's trusted second. He is jealous at the idea of Wash being with anyone else. But he eventually matures and controls these negative feelings.
I don't see Grace as a petty or jealous person. She grew up in a big family so she must have learnt to deal with these things. She owns up to her mistakes pretty quickly. She's not really jealous of anyone. Maybe she envies a little bit, but she's not jealous. She doesn't hold other people's mistakes against them either.
their dream wedding
This is a cute one to think about. Michael would want a smallish ceremony, maybe somewhere with a view overlooking the colony. Alicia would be in a pretty white dress, he would be in a smart tux. They'd exchanger their own vows in front of friends and family before having a buffet meal and drinks at Boylan's. Time to get drunk and have fun before disappearing off with his lady love for some alone time as newly weds!
Before the invasion I think Grace would have wanted a big, traditional white wedding. Y'know, posh venue, white flowing dress, beautiful bright decorations. Post alien invasion, something wayyyy small. Like family and close friends only. You take what you can get in the apocalypse! A dress would be nice, preferably white, but what are the chances of finding a clean white dress during war time? Her beau would be as smart as possible - I mean a wash and a change of clean clothes would do. She'd have her hair up in braids. No guns would be nice but not practical. Her dad would accompany her down the aisle. They'd say their vows and then sit with friends by the fireside telling stories until it was time to fight again.
favourite drink
There's not a lot of choice in the Cretaceous period. I'm not actually sure what they even served at Boylan's Bar or what they drank apart from Moonshine, but I imagine Michael drank a lot of whatever the closest thing to beer was! I also like to think once Boylan started making cocktails - out of some pre-historic fruits no one's ever heard of - he became really fond of those and Skye made fun of him for it.
For Grace - coffee, coffee, coffee!
what scares them the most
I think for Michael it must be losing Alicia.
For Grace, any of her family members dying.
Thanks again!
