akram salim is maybe the character of all time. well-dressed, polite and unassuming man capable of terrible violence. literally looks like a cinnamon roll but could kill you. was "sort of" a cop in syria and no, he won't be expanding on that. widowed single dad to daughters he loves but doesn't understand. casual brutality is easy for him but he never loses control. WILL stop to pet the nose of a dog statue because it's good luck. sarcastic as fuck but never even cracks a smile. has a knife and knows how to use it. has absolute zero ego and goes out of his way to reassure the cop who previously investigated their cold case that he did a great job and it wasn't his fault the case wasn't solved earlier. helps his egotistical asshole boss calm down from a panic attack and then uses said boss's vulnerable position to enforce a boundary in a way that is both polite and threatening. and he bakes :)

OC Introduction:
Jannah Ahmed

My new OC in a fic is a cute, funny, smart, accomplished, and sometimes anxious Tanzanian Muslim girl. Omg, I love her so much! This is so exciting, she is my first East African character! I based her on a friend of mine, and myself.
She appears in my Dept. Q fic: Let Your Good Heart Lead You Home ✨
Full name: Jannatul Firdaws Ahmed
Nickname: Jannah
Jannah means Paradise in Arabic. To me this name/nickname super beautiful Islamically and I love abstract names like that. It reminds me of the East African girlies I’ve met who are literally named Heaven, and omg the way they are always so gorgeous?!

Fun fact: People often guess her age wrong and assume she’s in her 20s. She’s older.
This is based on me. While I feel that I look my age, I get mistaken almost daily for a college student. This is not a complaint lol just kinda wild and usually funny.
Languages: Swahili, English, some elementary Arabic
This isn’t really based on me, I feel like most Africans are bilingual at a minimum, but I will say I’m fluent in 3 languages 🙃
Accent: To Akram she speaks in a neutral American accent. Jannah attended international schools growing up, so her accent is likely a bit all over the place with an generic American-ness.
Inspired by my many multi-lingual non-American acquaintances who sound American solely because of where they studied and adapting how they talk, and also just from like watching videos lol. Sometimes the accent changes depending on the word or phrase or filler words which I find super adorable, and can imagine for Jannah as well.
Tone/Voice: I’ve settled on this YouTuber for Jannah’s voice both in English and Swahili because this creator speaks Swahili ahhh 😭
youtube
(this creator also speaks Serbian at one point which is cute. she’s also very much giving you’d probably guess her age wrong)
Goals: Currently at university studying to be a pharmacist and hoping to work in Edinburgh after finishing her studies.
This is based on and inspired by my amazing Syrian friend who lives in Türkiye. She got her degree, became a pharmacist, and worked for years in Syria before having to move with her husband. We’ve talked at length about how disheartening it was that her experience wasn’t of any use to her in Türkiye, so her options were to start all over again by going back to school (she didn’t do that) or do something else for money.
In creating Jannah I wanted her to be rooted in some degree of reality when it comes to the struggles of being an immigrant and starting over in your career as an adult. How super hard and stressful that is, especially when you’re so smart and accomplished but it’s kinda worthless in the new place you’re in, and how other people really don’t understand that unless they lived it or know lots of people who’ve had to.
I wanted Jannah to have this in her backstory because I think it makes her more relatable to Akram. I felt that’d make them more compatible!

Religion: Islam, practicing
Islamically, she practices consistently, she doesn’t wear hijab on the daily (only to pray, go to mosque, and for special Islamic occasions), and overall she appreciates being Muslim. She’s been through some stuff before coming to Scotland. Faith has helped to guide her during life’s challenges and this is again inspired by my Syrian friend, who told me the kinds of terrible things she’s had to see before moving, and how she managed to process them (she also told me how her husband helped her, he’s literally a cinnamon roll 🥺 and he cooks so welllll).
I wanted to religion to be another thing Akram and Jannah relate on, because that’s the main thing that stands out to me about his character (e.g. praying at work) hence its relevance to Jannah’s character!
Misc: She’s great with kids and great at cooking! Great at hairstyling as well, specially African hair braiding hence starting a little business for some extra money.
Based on me. I’m great at all three :D although now I have locs so I don’t do braids for myself anymore, and I actually don’t really do other peoples hair. I do maintain my locs tho.

That’s all for now but if I think of anything else i’ll update this post! 💕 Isn’t she the cutest!!!!!!!!!!!
#good heart fic#rambles about my oc bc I love her and this is my blog 🥹💕#Tanzanian oc#African oc#Muslim oc#black female oc

Three things would improve Akram's life:
A better job, preferably not in IT
Reliable carpooling for his daughters after school so he can work said new job
For the once-quiet building he lives in to go back to the way it was, without all these new tenants heatedly arguing in the middle of the day
He's not entirely sure how any of this can happen. But when he comes home one afternoon to a troublesome situation with a seemingly vulnerable new neighbor, the girl-dad in him physically cannot stand by and do nothing.
Takes place alongside Dept. Q Season 1 episodes, showing Akram's home life with his 2 daughters, and developing a relationship with OC. Canon compliant-ish.
Details:
Pairing: Akram Salim/Original Muslim Female Character
Vibe: Domestic fluff slow burn with references to Islam.
Notes:
Your honor: I have fallen madly in love with Akram Salim, so here I am with an ode to him. Akram, my beloved Syrian king, I adore you! I have aged up (and named) his eldest daughter to 13. The OC is partly based on someone I know, and me. I almost gave her a variant of my name, but Jannah seemed more beautiful; iykyk. This one is for the Muslim girlies. Happy reading!
Read it on Ao3 ✨✨✨

(...) when facts are being so clearly ignored, it's never because of incompetence.
(...) when facts are being so clearly ignored, it's never because of incompetence.
This feels very adjacent to the world's current climate, and it's such a simple quote from a Syrian man yet it can also mean so much more. I was stumped a little by how calmly he said it because my brain went immediately THAT MAKES SENSE IN OTHER WAYS TOO AKRAM SALIM YOU'RE GOOD, YOU ARE EXPERIENCED!!!the writers are good yes but also-
