So looking for something entirely unrelated I found the source for Elisabeth saying Gisela and her children looked like pigs: is one of her poems... in which she never actually mentions Gisela at all
Machine translation (RIP Elisabeth's prose):
Oberon to your left A skinny sow Blue eyes blinking honestly, Like thee almost in sight. Her piglets, lovely little ones, She brought them from the neighbouring kingdom; There they look like their father pig Down to the last hair]
These stances belong to the poem "Zu Oberons Wiegenfest". Written in August 1887, the context of this poem was Franz Josef's 57th birthday, which the extended Habsburg family celebrated at Ischl. In this poem Titania (Elisabeth's alter ego) introduces all the guests that gathered to celebrate Oberon (FJ's alter ego) as animals. Now in the text the guests are never addressed by name, is Briggitte Hamann, editor of the poems, who identifies each animal: the oaf being Crown Princess Stephanie, the mice being Archduke Karl Salvator and his family, the dove being Archduchess Maria Teresa, the monkey being Archduke Ludwig Viktor, etc. And yes, she also identifies Gisela as being the sow and her children the piglets.
While I can see where the identification came from (having the same blue eyes as Oberon, bringing her children from a neighboring kingdom - Bavaria -), it does not change that nowhere in the text is Gisela ever mentioned. So using this poem (which is extremely unserious btw, she also wrote that she wished to be a flea to itch everyone at the feast lol) as evidence of Elisabeth's disdain for her daughter and grandchildren is a reach.
#and even if this were about gisela and her kids in context is def less rude#she goes on and on about how ugly the monkey (allegedly ludwig viktor) is#meanwhile she calls the piglets cute - which imo makes the nickname sound less mean spirited#empress elisabeth of austria#gisela of austria princess of bavaria#das poetische tagebuch

Also my personal top five for this year. Not necessarily my favorites to win but my personal favorites so far!
1. 🇫🇮 Finland (my beloved). No Rules - Windows95 Man. I am obsessed and it speaks to my soul. If you know me this isn’t a surprise. It has me around the throat and will not let go. See me slay.
2. 🇪🇸 Spain. Zorra - Nebulossa. I’m a simple guy—I see a cheeky feminist anthem that isn’t a soprano, and I’m gonna love it. The 80’s synth flavor certainly doesn’t hurt. And I adore the original music video, it’s so powerful and so uplifting and hope they use it as staging inspo. I will always stan a strong mature queen.
3. 🇳🇱 Netherlands. Europapa - Joost Klein. It’s the perfect combination of goofy and heartfelt. It also has that classic Eurodance feel we’ve been missing and endless replay-ability. Also I just think Joost is super cute.
4. 🇨🇭 Switzerland. The Code - Nemo. A nonbinary anthem? Hello? Fantastic mixture of genres that’s just seamless and genuinely fantastic vocals that are technically impressive and not just screaming. It’s artcore at its best. I’m also thrilled to say it’s one of my favorites to win. It’s important and beautiful and I adore it.
5. 🇺🇦 Ukraine. Teresa/Maria - Alyona and Jerry Heil. It’s haunting and has the same lovely blend of folk/rap that I loved about 2022’s entry.
Subject to change as more come out but I’m feeling good so far!

Eurovision 24’ ranks
Ever since the Eurovision Song Contest of 2024 ended, I’ve seen so many posts of people ranking their top 10 contestants from best to worst, so I will do the same! (I will also be including some of the contestants that were not qualified into the finals, such as Belgium)
Croatia’s ‘Rim Tim Dagi Dim’ by Baby Lasagna. I think his song was very upbeat and it earned the loud voices of the whole audience in the stadium. I personally think he was supposed to win. (No hate to Nemo though.)
Sweden’s ‘Unforgettable’ by Marcus and Martinus. I personally think this song deserved to be in second place due to its upbeat music and the positive attitude it brings. It’s really sad that they got a low ranking but it’s really good that it’s at least in the top 10.
Italy’s ‘La Noia’ by Angelina Mango. Her song brings great vibes and I really enjoyed her switch in tempos. Her song was a mix of emotions for me but I loved it for the most part.
France’s ‘Mon Amour’ by Slimane. This song was such an amazing 3 minutes for France. He came in and surprised everyone with his strong and confident vocals. I really enjoyed listening to this song, and no matter how many times I will repeat it, it will never get old.
England’s ‘Dizzy’ by Olly Alexander. Let’s get straight to the point, his performance was absolutely horrible, I can agree, but, the song itself was super catchy. This man reminds me of early Elton John and he never fails to make me like one of his other songs, so this song was no other surprise.
Belgium’s ‘When The Party’s Over’ by Mustii. This song was so incredible and it was so sad that he did not quality for the finals. I do feel like he should’ve been qualified due to the burst of energy that he gives everyone. His chorus was beautiful and it stood out more than the rest of the song.
Estonia’s ‘(nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi’ by 5MINUST and Puuluup. Even though this song is absolutely hilarious, it did bring me a big burst of energy when I heard it for the first time. I also think they should’ve gotten a higher position :(.
Netherland’s ‘Europapa’ by Joost Klein. His song was, of course, super wonderful but his voice didn’t really match the song during his performance. Also, he definitely did not deserve to get disqualified.
Armenia’s ‘Jako’ by Landaniva. This song was amazing due to the fact that it was very traditional in Armenia and it was very hyper and catchy.
Ukraine’s ‘Teresa And Maria’ by Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil. As I said for France, the vocals in this song were absolutely phenomenal. Also, there were two different types of music in this song, which were rap and ‘vocals’ not sure. But even though this song was amazing, I think they should’ve gotten a less position.
And that concludes my top 10 of the Eurovision Song Contest of 2024! If you want to see the next top 10, you just gotta wait :).
Bye bye!

“You are lost if saints don't disgust you. Saintliness is systematic insomnia, the heart perpetually awake. Suppressing sleep is a confessed ambition: thus Peter of Alcantara, whom Teresa of Avila knew personally, and who was acclaimed as a saint while still alive, for forty years did not sleep for more than one and a half hour each night. Fasting and sleeplessness are required conditions for sainthood.
Saintliness is a negative sort of perfection. I love life too much to attain it. Because of my reserves of health, I remain a heavenly interloper. There are illnesses that can only be treated with a good dose of divinity, but I prefer the alleviation of pain provided by earthly tranquilizers. I don't have the gift of infinite joy and pain which used to throw Saint Teresa of Avila and Angela da Foligno into ecstasy. I am healthy, that is I can stand and talk about God, not fall down at the very thought of him. What a heavy price one must pay for one's health!” - Emil Cioran, ‘Tears and Saints’ (1937) [page 60]

THE EUROVISION 2024 RANKING!
The time has finally come for me to rank the Eurovision songs we have this year. But before I do, I do want to make a couple of points because there are, I feel, a couple important comments that need to be made.
For one, you'll notice that I ranked only 35 countries while the list has 37 songs. There are 2 countries that should not be competing this year, and I decided not to include them in my ranking or any other posts I make here on Aijamisespava, especially as a heavily opinion-based platform. Second, this was a REALLY hard year to rank. So if you see a song ranked super low, it's not that I hate it (I don't really hate any of these songs), it's just I liked some more than others. And finally, I won't be providing explanations for my rankings quite yet. I have a fun 2023 vs. 2024 post for next week planned where I will explain things.
Ready? Set? Here are the first Aijamisespava Eurovision Rankings!
35. Finland: "No Rules!" by Windows95Man 34. Latvia: "Hollow" by Dons 33. Albania: "Titan" by Besa 32. Cyprus: "Liar" by Silia Kapsis 31. Ireland: "Doomsday Blue" by Bambie Thug 30. Luxembourg: "Fighter" by Tali 29. Sweden: "Unforgettable" by Marcus & Martinus 28. Netherlands: "Europapa" by Joost Klein 27. Austria: "We Will Rave" by Kaleen 26. Australia: "One Milkali (One Blood)" by Electric Fields 25. Iceland: "Scared Of Heights" by Hera Björk 24. Germany: "Always On The Run" by Isaak 23. Malta: "Loop" by Sarah Bonnici 22. Czechia: "Pedestal" by Aiko 21. Moldova: "In The Middle" by Natalia Barbu 20. United Kingdom: "Dizzy" by Olly Alexander 19. Spain: "Zorra" by Nebulossa 18. Greece: "Zari" by Marina Satti 17. Portugal: "Grito" by Iolanda 16. Armenia: "Jako" by Ladaniva 15. Estonia: "(Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi" by 5MIINUST & PUULUUP 14. Italy: "La Noia" by Angelina Mango 13. Ukraine: "Teresa & Maria" by alyona alyona/Jerry Heil 12. Denmark: "Sand" by Saba 11. Switzerland: "The Code" by Nemo 10. France: "Mon Amour" by Slimane 9. Poland: "The Tower" by Luna 8. Lithuania: "Luktelk" by Silvester Belt 7. Georgia: "Firefighter" by Nusta 6. Slovenia: "Veronika" by Raiven 5. San Marino: "11:11" by Megara 4. Norway: "Ulveham" by Gåte 3. Croatia: "Rim Tim Tagi Dim" by Baby Lasagna 2. Serbia: "Ramonda" by Teya Dora 1. Belgium: "Before The Party's Over" by Mustii
Final Verdict: This year started off a tad underwhelming. Maybe this was my saltiness at my national final winners not winning. However, as I listened to some songs more and more, I started really liking a lot of the entries. And then the internally selected songs came out and I was utterly blown away by some of the songs we got. Was this a good year? Absolutely. I can't wait to see all these songs fight it all out in May! *oh yeah, may I note that my opinions may change? My winner has been flip flopping between Serbia and Belgium for a while and may continue to do so until the end of time*
Congrats to Belgium for winning my personal Eurovision so far, and scoring their 2nd victory in my rankings (having been my winner for 2015).
Okay, I'm gonna go now, bye!

Their Favorite Eurovision 2024 Songs (Headcanons)
(Rise!Turtles + Bonus!)
A/N: I just HAD to do this! I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now, and I thought it was very fitting to do it for the Rise boys, because, well, they have made it obvious that they love music (and I just couldn’t focus on anything else before I had made this…). Read this thread about cult social relationships by Matthew Remski:
When you deconstruct harmful ideas and beliefs—from antivax positions to reactionary social views—you will inevitably be seen and felt as attacking the relationships that people form through those views. That’s a big problem in a lonely world, and there will be blowback.
In anti-cult theory and journalism, this alienation is usually seen as unavoidable. The idea is that the relationships within a toxic group are transactional, unfulfilling, and fragile. The gamble is that the person will wake up into wholesome relationships outside of the group.
That may work out. Or, the person will crawl out of a mid-level engagement with NXIVM and find themselves in late stage capitalism looking for gig work, missing the friends they had on the inside, and the sense of shared purpose.
This analysis can scale up: It’s been helpful for some to look at QAnon, the Trucker Convoy, and antimask protestors through a cult studies lens. All the boxes get ticked: information silos, emotional manipulation, charismatic leaders and their failed prophecies. But there is never a single explanation and the activities within these groups are diverse. It was dangerous for antivax parents to open mask-free homeschool spaces when the schools had to shut down. But the reason for the school was the outer layer on what it felt like to be in the school, or teach in it.
In researching an antivax parenting group on IG, I saw they posted about their parties and playdates in politicized language. They were also parenting at the time, doing all the things that parents do. Shooting criticism into that space will feel like an intimate attack.
There was a lot of disgust at the Convoy crowd for partying on Parliament Hill. But pissing on snow while rave music throbs can signify bonds that may outlast any incoherent ideology. Which is why the same group will cycle through different ideas. The ideas may be fragile.
The most dangerous bonds are locked in with fascist hatred and must be resisted. But most participants are not leaders, and not monetized. Many of the yoga and wellness people I interviewed had no idea how toxic the views of the leaders were. But they did feel they had friends.
These groups are diagonalist, distrusting all power structures, including (maybe most of all) an interpretive power structure that would discredit their views without knowing or valuing their relationships.
The truckers hated Trudeau’s position on vaccines and fossil fuels, but they may have hated more what they saw as his smug privilege and mastery of national hypocrisies. He stands outside and above their society and friend circles, like Clinton using the word “deplorable.”
There’s an amazing passage in Naomi Klein's Doppelganger where she basically asks Why should we be shocked that after decades of neoliberal cruelty and individualism, people will say Fuck you to the “elites” who are suddenly asking them to act like we’re a society after all?
I think this problem scales further, with different political valances, up to broader critiques of religion from rationalists/skeptics, where the target is low-hanging fruit: crazy shit people believe. The collateral damage is usually a neglect of social desires and needs.
Currently there’s this question floating around about how so many former members of rationalist and skeptic movements, and IDW influencers, slid rightward and conspiratorial in their politics. Many answers there, including: “They might have always been like that.” But one answer is that when Hitchens guts Mother Teresa like a fish, there’s schadenfreude, but no more clarity around the diverse reasons for what people experienced when they gathered around her. The charismatic religious is taken down by the charismatic debunker.
And what is left over, aside from lonely smug men? Are people forming real communities of solidarity and resilience through Sam Harris’s meditation app, or in Bill Maher’s garage? Is there a single pro-community initiative that has emerged from this commentariat?
If not, could this be because they never really took an interest in the day-to-day lives or shared needs of the people whose ideas and beliefs they preferred to snigger at?
I’m not debunking all debunking here because we’re all doing what we can. But I am advocating for a more social and anthropological approach, an approach that offers more than “follow the science” or “develop critical thinking,” or anything else that implies stupidity among people who need friends and meaningful work. We all guffawed when Ron Watkins, pretty much caught out as Q, gave up on the LARP by saying “Maybe QAnon was all about the friends we made on the way.” It was a POS statement for a POS dude to make.
But he wasn't all wrong. That’s the thing about grifters. They exploit a social vacuum progressives often think they can fill with irony. They wrap their followers in flags or ideas, but in that huddle there are real connections that have to be understood and not dismissed.
–
This is very relevant when dealing with cults on all sides of the political spectrum.
Most young people are wrapped in colorful flags and anti-scientific homophobic ideas pushed by big industries. But they also find community through those flags and ideas. No young person wants to be outcast by their peers.
And then there's the people who deny climate science and oppose catastrophe mitigation policies. These people also find a powerful form of community. They are uniting through a shared relationship to the land. The relationship they all share with the land is toxic and misinformed. But uniting over your shared perspective and feelings about land is powerful. Human-land relationships are neglected by modern neoliberal society. But solastalgia is now causing everyone to reach desperately for that human-land connection. And we're all coming up with different perspectives on land and forming social groups around those perspectives.

Max, Costa Rica, Tag 6
Also wortwörtlich.
