I don't like the screenplay that much because it's oddly paced and not uniform. I wanted to see Miss Shetty's pregnancy have more effect on her than just a simple monologue while looking at a photo. They spent so much time on finding a proper donor that they don't have much time left to focus on the the actual pregnancy which starts the plot in the first place.

Other than that, I think it's a proper and earnest effort which we need more of in Telugu cinema.

The quest to watch 'whodunnits' has led me from 'current day' (liberally used terminology) Bollywood and Hollywood to 50s/60/70s Bollywood (so, so many movies), equally early days Hollywood (Witness for the Prosecution; D.O.A.), regional Indian movies (again, so, so many movies - in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, and Bengali), Spanish movies (Contratiempo; El Cuerpo), very old-school Japanese movies (Rashomon), and now, thanks to Netflix, an Italian film. (No regrets!)

It's not necessarily a typical 'whodunnit', despite the title (7 Women and a Murder); instead, it's more of a slightly comedic examination of 7 women who find themselves stuck together in a large house (courtesy of a snowstorm) - a house in which the murder of the husband/father/lover/son-in-law/head-of-house (or whatever the relationship would be for the ... maid?) has relatively recently taken place.

And with that, things are off - secrets are slowly spilled, hidden truths become unhidden, and the aunt faints repeatedly. Yes, it's played for comedy - a lot of it is, even amidst/in between the secrets - and it keeps things relatively lighthearted, even as things get more and more ominous (phone line cut; car engine wires cut; large gate locked; power/lights flickering) and it becomes clear that not only do each of the women present have motive (or more than 1 motive), but also that they really shouldn't trust each other very much. ... Family, amirite?

Things obviously turn out well enough - again, it's more an attempt at comedy (and I'm sure some of that would've been even better if I knew Italian and wasn't just reading subtitles, but even then there were definitely funny bits) than an outright whodunnit/murder mystery; the 'perpetrator' ends up being the one they probably spend the least amount of time in trying to make look guilty (conversely, also the least amount of time spent making her look innocent), and there is, of course, a twist or two at the end.

A lot of the 'surprises' are predictable, if not even very cliché, and don't really have much of an impact beyond giving us reason to doubt everyone.

That said, while the final reveal was a bit blah in terms of the "oh look, someone was listening in all along," it does probably fit with how the story goes - and the contents of that reveal were pretty well done. In fact, the most annoying part about the whole bit, honestly, was probably everything that happened after that reveal - because you just walk away uncertain about what would actually have been borne out of this entire thing. And, even more so, what led to the finality.

Not bad. Not bad at all.
