This week: No Humans Allowed!
Anakin was, of course, the only human with reflexes fast enough to podrace. So apparently these freaky little guys all have a natural advantage over us clumsy, non-Chosen-One humans!
I wish other media about Anakin, especially The Clone Wars cartoon, would show more of his superhuman ability and zeal for racing. I think it’s really endearing and fun, and a cool reference to George Lucas’ first love, cars. The closest the cartoon gets to this theme is the very first arc, Malevolence, in which Anakin can pilot more skillfully than anyone else, and Ahsoka has to advise him to quit for the sake of everyone else’s safety. There are a couple comics where Ahsoka and Luke get to podrace, and Anakin/Vader gets to react to them in charming and ridiculous ways. I’ll write about these comics later, because they are my absolute weakness!
The flags featured in the adorable illustration above are:
the shark who says “Ni!” of Clegg Holdfast, a Nosaurian from New Plympto. New Plympto’s tragic fate is shown in the grimdark (by Star Wars standards) Dark Times comics: the planet and its poor little dinosaur population are neglected by the Republic, manipulated by the Separatists, and looted by the Empire. I’m uncertain if Clegg lived to see this destruction, as his pod crashed in the second lap.
the red flag with blue pennants of Dud Bolt (great name!), a Vulptereen from Vulpter. He must have survived, as he is the racer who you can see on the TV at the bar in Attack of the Clones. I think he is a very cute piggy-crocodile.
the matching green flag with red pennants of Gasgano, a Xexto from Troiken. I think this guy is genuinely ugly, but he did come in second place after Ani, so I must respect him.
the lobster claw on a green field of Mars Guo, who is, hilariously, a Phuii from Phu. Similar to beloved character Hera Syndulla, Mars is named after a Greco-Roman god. Did that ancient empire somehow reach this distant galaxy?
the red hook of Teemto Pagalies, a Veknoid from Moonus Mandel. A Veknoid closer to my heart is the wise, mysterious Master Zao. But Teemto is the original goofy pig-lizard-man.
In the illustration, the podracers bear their own flags, but this is not the case in the movie; in fact, it looks the actual flagbearers mostly appear to be human. The only exception is Anakin’s flagbearer, his loyal creation, C-3PO.
“English-Japanese Dictionary for Jedi Knights,” entry for “Flag.” 2015. Illustrators: Chifuyu Sasaki and Naoko Kawano, aka Gurihiru.

I told you I had a vid of the Boonta Eve Classic that your father won. I made a copy of it for you, and I’m transmitting it along with this message. Because for some reason, I want you to see what I saw that day. I want you to see that the kid never cheated. Not once, even when he could’ve. Anakin Skywalker was great. A Podracer champion, through and through. I don’t know if that’s important to you, but it is to me. I don’t know what else to say. All this talking has made my throat dry. I guess that’s it. Bye.

N64 Games
N64 Star Wars Games Ranked
Just like The Simpsons video games we mentioned in our last article, Star Wars games have found their way onto almost every game console for all generations. Four Star Wars games were released on the Nintendo 64, which is more than its predecessors (3 on SNES and 2 on NES). Of the four Star Wars N64 Games, two revolved around Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, one around the original trilogy, and one around Star Wars Legends.
Here are the Star Wars N64 games ranked:
4. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Release Year: 1996UPC:
045496870133
Current Value: $10-$12
Are you shocked that this game is ranked lowest? Although Shadows of the Empire is the most popular and well-known Star Wars game on the Nintendo 64, it was rated the lowest out of the four Star Wars games released, with an average rating of 6.5/10 across reputable review sites.
The game has a great story that’s divided into 4 chapters. The first chapter takes place at the beginning of the fifth Star Wars film – Empire Strikes Back. The second chapter involves a face-off against Boba Fett to save Han Solo. The third chapter has players protecting Luke Skywalker while recovering the secret plans for the second Death Star. And finally, the fourth chapter requires players to rescue Princess Leia from Prince Xizor in order to beat the game.
Unfortunately, the game received its low reviews due to poor controls, awkward camera angles, and mediocre level designs after The Battle of Hoth.
3. Star Wars Episode I: Racer
Release Year: 1999UPC:
045496870416
Current Value: $6-$8
The first Phantom Menace video game released on the N64 with an average rating of 7.5/10. Based on the pod race movie scene, players must race around different circuits, each set becoming progressively more difficult (think Mario Kart 64). Players can earn money by winning races and can spend this on upgrades for their podracer at Watto’s shop.
The game has 23 playable characters, 17 of which need to be unlocked. Competitive players should note that the best Star Wars Racer character is Ben Quadinaros. Not only is his podracer huge, he also has the strongest and most effective boost in the game.

2. Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo
Release Year: 2000UPC:
023272656591
Current Value: $19-$21
The follow-up to Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Battle for Naboo follows the events of the film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The game offers 15 levels for players to complete with the following available aircraft: Naboo N-1 Starfighter, the Naboo Bomber, and Police Cruiser. Land and watercraft are also playable on various levels.
The game received positive reviews, with an average rating of 8/10. It’s commonly praised for it crisp controls, addition of ground vehicles (which Rogue Squadron didn’t have), and story line.
1. Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Release Year: 1998UPC:
045496870379
Current Value: $10-$12
The first installment of the popular Rogue Squadron trilogy, which was concluded on the Nintendo Gamecube. Rogue Squadron was the 2nd Nintendo 64 game to support the Expansion Pak (after Donkey Kong 64).
The story takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, and revolves around the missions of Luke Skywalker and Wedge Anitlles to form the Rogue Squadron. Similar to Shadows of the Empire, the game is divided into four chapters. The final chapter takes place six years after the Battle of Endor with Wedge Antilles battling the remnants of the empire; this was the first post Return of the Jedi content in a video game!
The game received great reception with an average rating of 8.5/10 and holds a special place in the heart’s of Star Wars fans. We highly recommend playing this game if you haven’t!

Racer Re-Release Launches Next Month
April 16, 2020 12:52 PM EST
It’s working. IT’S WORKING!!!
Game developer Aspyr announced Star Wars Episode 1: Racer re-release will launch for PS4 and Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2020.
According to a press release, you can expect to play the beloved game on modern consoles in less than a month for $14.99. The re-release will include some upgrades, including modernized controls. It will also feature everything you remember from the initial release, including single-player campaigns, split-screen multiplayer, 25 racers, and several tracks from eight unique worlds.
“Star Wars fans can soon go full throttle with Aspyr’s update to the classic, fan-favorite, Star Wars Episode l: Racer,” said Elizabeth Howard, vice president of publishing at Aspyr, in the press release. “The beloved game has been modernized for the most optimal gaming experience on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Star Wars fans should get ready to steer their racer to victory and leave their opponents in the dust.”
StarWars.com interviewed Aspyr producer James Vicari to discuss the Star Wars Episode 1: Racer re-release. They talk about several facets of the upcoming game, including how the team modernized its control scheme. With Star Wars Episode 1: Racer coming to the Nintendo Switch, Vicari does confirm there will be multiple controller configurations and the team has ensured that each feels comfortable.
“You really want to make sure that the game plays well and embraces as much of the variations as possible for them. So we’ve done a lot of work to make sure that the game feels comfortable in all configurations, including playing with each individual Joy-Con,” says Vicari. “The team here is a big believer that the best control scheme is the one you don’t ever think about and that philosophy really permeates everything we’ve done with the controls.”
Personally, I’m excited to check out the Star Wars Episode 1: Racer re-release. I have a lot of fond memories playing this game for hours as Teemto Pagalies. I don’t know why they were the one I gravitated towards. Regardless, I’m excited to bring Teemto back into the driver’s seat.

Oh My, Space Travel Sounds Rather Perilous
STAR WARS EPISODE I: The Phantom Menace 00:54:20
The orange colored podracer engines on the left sort of resemble the secondary thrusters on Mawhonic’s pod, but a different configuration. The one on top seems to have an angled fin coming off of it. (Photos from Star Wars Chronicles: the Prequels)

Why Sebulba is a Sith apprentice:
Sebulba is a key part of the Sith's plan to use Anikan. He serves the role of a rival that Anikan can never defeat, creating feelings of anger, hate, and frustration.
The source of Sebulba's power stems from his jealousy towards Anikan and passion for glory. Anikan is so important to the Sith plan, that he isn't allowed to even TOUCH Anikan. All he is allowed to do is taunt him, sabotage him in the race, damage his pod, and win the race. Which I believe now we can establish is a Sith training ritual of sorts.
But why do I believe he is an apprentice and force user? Let’s look at the events of the race.
We know for sure, that Sebulba sabotaged Anikan’s pod. We saw him do it.
Ben Quadrinaros's pod also fails to start, which isn't that suspicious, but could be sabotage, as it is for Anikan's pod.
Sebulba rams Mawhonic off the track and into a canyon wall, causing an explosive crash.
The next person who is eliminated is Ratts Tyerell. He crashes into a stalagtite in a cave. What is supsicious, is that he's looking back, and then when he looked forward, instead of trying to steer clear, he just frantically waves his hands around. Upon researching the Starwars Databank website I found this:
" On the second lap of the race, Ratts' accelerator jammed, and he couldn't get clearance past the rocky stalactites."
That sounds an awful lot like sabotage.
As for Ben Quadrinaros, his pod eventually starts, but immediately flys apart for no apparent reason. Again, on the Starwars Databank it says:
"It was not until most of his competitors were already heading towards their second lap that his four engines did light -- just as his power couplings shorted, sending the rockets flying about the arena."
This seems way too big of a coincidence to be an accident. Sounds like more sabotage.
Ody Mandrell is getting serviced, and one of his pit droids is sucked into one of his engines, destroying it and preventing him from finishing the race. That also seems suspicious. Another "accident".
Sebulba eliminates another racer, Mars Guo, by throwing a tool into it's engine, destroying it. He does so with a surprising amount of ease, considering how fast they're both moving and how much concentration it takes to pod-race.
Teemto Pagalies's engine is hit by a Tusken Raider's rifle shot, causing his pod to crash. Which is only a little suspicious, because the shots to Anikan’s racer didn’t seem to be as forceful as the one that hit his engine.
When Anikan catches up to Sebulba, Sebulba forces him onto the service ramp, and Anikan manages to swoop ahead of him.
Now, Sebulba pulls in slowly behind Anikan. At this time, that piece Sebulba damaged is dangling, but it hasn't actually broken off. It isn't until Sebulba is behind him that it is even a problem. When we're shown the piece that Sebulba damaged, it is being pulled backwards, which makes sense with the speed at which the vehicle is moving, but when it finally does break off, it flies UP and IN and even almost hits Anikan in the head. Almost as if it was purposefully being flung at him. But it looks like an "accident"
I submit to you, that Sebulba is a FORCE user, and that alot of the inexpicable "accidents" that occur during the race are a direct result of his use of force powers. If this is true, I also believe that he is Jar Jar's apprentice, because his style is so similar to Jar Jar's. The sabotage and the accidents also share a similarty with the reason that Jar Jar was exiled from the Gungan city.
Furthermore, if the he is a Sith student, and the races are nothing more than training for the Sith, then I also submit that Tattooine is the Sith equivalent of Curoscant, where the Sith collect force sensitives and train them in the dark ways of the force.
*Edit* Upon closer inspection, when they show Ody Mandrell’s pit droids for the first time, one of them very forcefully swings his hammer into one of the other droids, causing it to domino effect into the other. This creates a stooge-like disharmony in the droids, that later can be attributed to the mistake made during the race. It’s quite possible that SOMEONE used a force power to pull the hammer, as the pit droid seems to try to deny having hit either of them.
