Teddy Ruxpin Hacking: Making a Custom Animatronic Toy with Personalized Voices

I just published my latest guide on the Adafruit Learning system: I hacked a Teddy Ruxpin doll from 2017 and turned him into a talking Figment the Dragon doll, with personalized voices and stories for my baby nieces.  I have worked on and built many architectural models in many different scales for several different companies and businesses. I started out in the paint department at Alchemy II working on the television pilot for the Talking Teddy Bear Teddy Ruxpin where I literally started out cleaning paint buckets, airbrushes, and doing general labor helping out many of the other artists who were working on various parts of the television production. I was lucky enough to finally get to participate in fabricating a bunch of little airplanes, thanks to the graciousness and trusting nature of the gentleman who was overseeing the entire construction of the sculptural and miniature elements of the production. His name was Carl West ... may he rest in peace. I moved on from Alchemy II when the production came to an end and I went on to go do other work which helped me to also add to and build both my resume and my portfolio.

Teddy Ruxpin hacking 🧸📚🎶🗣️🤖

shhh! the baby is asleep, which means the parents are up hacking baby toys…we're following/recreating the DEFCON 26 Teddy Ruxpin reverse-engineering talk by super-hacker team @zenofex and @Exploiteers to bring this now-no-longer-supported Teddy Ruxpin 2017 edition back to life and maybe create some custom content as well!

our first step? parse out the SNXROM file to replace the eye bitmap frames in a 'story file' using python and Pillow. we just replaced em all with this adafruit logo but you could use any 128x128 RGB drawings. now that we know that works, next we'll be poking at the audio32 format to try and decode/encode custom audio. our poking and prodding is over at GitHub
