ever since liko lost in her battle against chili back in HZ056 i've been pretty passionate about wanting liko to win her future battle against grusha, partially because i just love her and want to see her win after such a heart-wrenching defeat, but also because i thought it would be good character writing - she loses, but learns to be passionate about battling in the process, and then she can apply that to her next major fight and win as a result. that was my thought process.
as HZ063 drew closer however, i started feeling like that maybe isn't what would happen - the way episodes have panned out, she hasn't really had any major battle training since her loss against chili (her joining roy with "awesome training" does not count LOL), and that massive cetitan and the type disadvantage started to really loom over the whole thing. but i still wasn't sure and by the time HZ063 came out this weekend, i genuinely had no clue what to expect, i just hoped the character writing payoff would be good, win or lose.
AND IT WAS!!! thank fucking god i love liko so much i need more really good liko episodes. i'm eating this up
first off: liko REALLY shows off what she learned from battling chili. honestly an absolute treat to watch. her level of increased confidence and focus honestly made me feel spoiled as a fan. never once did she take her eyes off the battle, she was not distracted by grusha being a hardass, and she's able to think through being pinned into a corner to turn the tides despite the odds stacked against her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
everything from the strategic switch to tebrim, to firing off magical leaf into huljukira's mouth, to grabbing tyltalis by the tail/feet... she's actually a really crafty and thoughtful battler when she sets her mind to it, which makes sense because her battle preferences are more to do with her mind than raw strength. even roy remarks "nice control" because she has notable precise control over her pokemon's actions. point is the payoff for her character development in her battle against chili was still present... despite her loss.
Tumblr media
and man does this loss sting like a bitch after watching her perform so well... AND on top of that grusha is a complete asshole about it. like UGH it just hurts to watch. and frankly there's no excuse as someone in grusha's position to be treating students that way... but there is a reason. and the reason makes this episode super fucking interesting. i really like how it was handled, actually.
Tumblr media
pretty much directly after a scene where grusha interrupts the trio having fun sledding with the arukujira, we're presented with grusha's backstory about why and how he quit snowboarding. the writing is essentially saying, here's grusha being a no-fun, shitty person, and here's why he's like that. (notably, the trio was doing something similar to snowboarding and had to dodge being injured themselves...)
what's important, though, is that we also find out that grusha didn't quit snowboarding because he was too seriously injured to ever do it again, just that it would be harder for him to achieve the same results he used to. he made a conscious, emotionally fueled decision to quit, because like the man says: he's harsh on everyone, himself included.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
at this point, he is basically the opposite of liko, and to the general themes of most stories in pokemon. he is not an incredible pokemon trainer because of passion, in fact he only became a trainer after his snowboarding accident just so he'd have something to succeed at again. he is not an incredible pokemon trainer because of friends or adventure or any other reason than a desperation to reach the same artificial "success" heights that he did before his accident. not to say that he's inhuman - forgiving the arukujira that caused his injury, patting it on the head, and becoming its trainer, signals a sense of personal guilt over the situation, and the arukujira in question obviously likes him despite his behavior. but it's a very strong contrast to what liko learned in HZ056, with being connected with her pokemon through battle, and enjoying fighting tough opponents even though she could lose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and it's important to note that even as far back as HZ056 itself, grusha was framed as a contrast to liko. he approaches her and his coldness (no pun intended) immediately slices into the atmosphere of the scene and liko's improved mood, and he implies that liko is weak for being happy after losing, because all he personally cares about is winning and being on top.
Tumblr media
all of this is to say that grusha is in the wrong to fail liko, he's in the wrong to talk down to her the way that he does. and this is made clear by the writing! when liko loses and grows from it, grusha's there to say something negative about it. when liko is having fun with her pokemon and her friends, he sarcastically remarks that she must be "pretty confident" if she has time to "goof off." the man in the gym says that he could have kept snowboarding, but he quit, as opposed to liko who gets back up again. everyone thinks he's harsh and offputting.
and at the end when grusha fails her, even dot and roy are like, no, maybe he'll pass you or give you a second chance! because they (rightly) experienced those things and were able to grow from those experiences, so surely the same would be the case for liko? but no! and it's a shock to everyone!
Tumblr media
the sound effect paired with liko's surprised face clearly indicates that this is supposed to shock the viewer just as much as it shocks liko and her friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and her friends are so surprised that they even try to argue with grusha about it!! it is unfair and wrong! and that's so fucking interesting!!! grusha is a flawed adult character, he's not part of the explorers but he's still treating liko wrongly as opposed to with the support that most of the adults in her life have given her, and he has a reason which makes him compelling, but not an excuse. for the type of show this is i am continually surprised by the complexity of some of the character writing, and this hits particularly well. liko's loss feels meaningful... and like setup for something.
to me, this episode seamlessly bridges off of liko's character development set in motion in HZ056, and also makes her character more clear through her contrast with grusha. i definitely don't think this is truly the end of this plot thread - whether or not liko actually gets to fight grusha again sometime in the future or something else, i definitely think liko will get to prove herself in some way, that pokemon battles aren't just about winning or losing and that grusha was indeed in the wrong. and i do hope she gets to fight grusha again or grusha gets to see her prove herself in the future, because it seems like the guy needs to learn to loosen up and have fun and be passionate, too.
Tumblr media
i feel even more sure of this because amethio is in the upcoming episode (thank god, i missed him) and grusha parallels amethio in a lot of ways - they both work very hard to be stronger, but just because of a desperation to succeed, and they're both absolutely miserable and irritable as people because of it, though of course amethio's motivations for being this way are very different. i won't speculate too much about the next episode right now but i am hoping that this will be pointed out by the narrative in some way - an amethio episode coming right after this feels... intentional to say the least lol.
the intentional nature of horizons' character writing and its ability to follow through on things it sets up episodes ago never fails to impress me tbh. really good episode. i fucking love liko

Some character notes and episode notes for HZ066, writing them down for future reference.
The episode starts with the trio at school. The Terastal course is over, so Clavell announces that the students will have a final friendly tournament, which will be the last opportunity for those who failed the course to use Terastal before giving back their orb. Afterwards, Liko, Roy and Dot watch the tournament before Nemo joins them. Dot is contacted by Botan who tells her to meet up with her at the infirmary. Botan tells Dot that something is happening and Dot catches on that the school is being hacked. Botan suspects Agate because she looked into her and found out that she is from an organization called the Explorers. Dot tells her everything she knows about the Explorers and they decide to look for Agate to stop her (Agate is stealing data from the principal's computer and connects to it from a different place). Dot calls Liko and Roy to ask for their help, and they split to look for Agate. Roy eventually finds Sango. Liko comes across a security guard and his Pokemon who have been affected by a salt move, so she suspects that Onyx is on the move too and follows her hunch (and lets Tebrim heal the guard and his Pokemon).
Afterwards, Liko, Roy and Dot all deal with an Explorers character. Dot eventually finds Agate and tries to stop her from stealing the data and have Kanuchan break the computer that Agate was using, but to no avail since Agate managed to transfer the data she needed. She eventually escaped using her Natio's Teleport.
Meanwhile, Roy battles Sango (Hogator vs Onigohri). They were going to battle in an art class room but Roy stopped himself from using Flamethrower since he didn't want to burn up the students' art (which reminded me of HZ011 when he was about to use Flamethrower in Oliva's forest but Liko stopped him from doing so.. now Roy is paying attention to his surroundings enough to stop himself etc). Roy brings the battle outside so both him and Sango can battle to their hearts' content. He eventually wins the battle btw, and Sango didn't want to end on a loss and wanted to keep battling.
On the other hand, Liko faces Onyx (Nyarote vs Kyojiohn). Grusha was in the surroundings and also came across the man who was hurt by Salt Cure and follows Tebrim afterwards so he got to watch Liko's battle. Onyx just wanted to do his job at first, but saw an opportunity to steal Terapagos, so he asked Liko to hand him over. Liko challenged him to a battle to protect Terapagos. Onyx uses Terastal and gains the upper hand for a moment. Grusha almost intervened at that moment, but Tebrim reacted (and almost looked like she was saying that he should watch over Liko..) and Grusha stopped himself and kept on watching Liko. Liko decided to use Terastal to protect the school and Terapagos and eventually won against Onyx. He accepted his defeat and told her his name before leaving.
Tebrim and Arukujira meet up with Liko after her battle, and Grusha follows. Liko gets nervous because she knew that Grusha saw her break the rules and use Terastal. He told her to meet her in the principal's office, and she thinks she is going to get in trouble. Liko apologizes for her actions at the principal's office, but Grusha tells her he is the one who should apologize and admits that he misjudged her strength. He got to see that when she fights on someone's behalf, her true strength shines through. She produced results, so he tells her that she passed her implementation test. Liko asks if it's okay, and Clavell has no issue with it since Grusha acknowledged her and Omodaka says her skills are worthy of a Terastal Orb. Liko thanks them all.
Afterwards, Dot is shown on the phone with Botan. She tells her that the Explorers escaped and took the info on Terapagos with them. Botan says that they got proof that Agate was the intruder, and that they kept the school damage to a minimum, and that the tournament didn't get called off, so she thanks Dot (and seems shy doing so, and Dot is also a bit embarassed accepting her gratitude).
At the end, Liko joins Roy and Dot who congratulate her for passing her test. They are happy they are all going to be able to use Terastal from now on. Kihada comes across them and tells Liko and Roy about the matchups for the upcoming battles in the tournament, and Liko and Roy learn that they are going to be each other's opponent.
--
Overall, loved this episode. I liked that Liko's implementation test was intertwined with the overarching plot and built up on it. Failing her test against Grusha, meeting Amethio and wavering against him when he used Terastal which Amethio noticed and pointed out, resolving not to give up after her talk with Amethio, which led to her fully accepting her loss and deciding that she was not going to let it stop her, which strengthened her desire to protect even more, which led to her knowingly breaking the rule (because she did what she had to do), which made Grusha and Onyx acknowledge her (and even Amethio prior to that episode acknowledged her!), etc. It's just neat writing all around, and I love it all.
I also love that Liko's implementation test showed in full display that Liko growing stronger is linked, narratively, to the Explorers. Which is something I kept writing about for a while now, but this chapter showed it even more. Sango was there when Liko was about to pass her basics test. They made a point to have Sango around to compete with Liko before having her battle with Kaede. And the implementation test, as well. Amethio was there to encourage Liko after her loss and Liko took his words to heart. And Onyx was the one to push her to break the rules, which is ultimately what made Grusha acknowledge Liko and make her pass, etc etc.
I also like that they kept the nuance about Liko's implementation test with Grusha. I'm glad that this didn't necessitate a rematch with him, but rather Grusha acknowledging her in another setting (which showed Liko's true strength, as she shines more when she protects those she loves) and showed that Liko was able to meet his criteria too.. I'm satisfied with it and these whole string of recent episodes gave me something to think about. Grusha definitely grew into one of my favorite game characters that was implemented into the anime. He is strict but not a bad guy, and I liked that he apologized to Liko. He was definitely smiling when he said "you pass" at the end, but we didn't get to see his smile... tragic.
Liko was absolutely the coolest when she battled (Onyx was very cool too, loved the scene when he told Liko his name and told her to remember it), she is so resourceful and Nyarote is so great too... something I like about Liko's battles is that I really feel like she is into it? I liked the scene when she was shown out of breath after the battle ended, like she really gave it her all and it really feels like battles are not something that only the Pokemon participates in, but the trainer does too... I think this shows a lot through Liko's battles because she feels wholly invested in them.
Anyway, I loved everything else too. Dot and Botan's friendship, the way Dot immediately relies on her friends, etc. Seeing more of Agate in action is so nice too (and her personality shines through too, she has a kind of taunting side when she has the upper hand which is so cool to see since she is so composed usually), her having a Natio is certainly curious because that's a Pokemon said to be able to see both the past and future. With the whole focus on the past with Lucius's story (and the SV games deal with past/future too...)... The PR account posted about Agate having a Natio and hinted that she might be a Psychic type user, so I'm looking forward to knowing who is her third Pokemon (here).
Also thought it was neat that while Liko and Roy won their battles against Onyx and Sango, Agate managed to successfuly steal the data so the Explorers still get something on their side and they are not coming back empty-handed. They are competent!
Sango was also a delight as usual in this episode, and I really feel like her VA is getting more expressive through her acting... I love when Sango gets angry and her line deliveries are great. (And I lost it when Onyx casually came to pick her up at the end before leaving, like okay man we get it you care about her and will never leave her behind, and you'll always be willing to put up with her complaining etc. Idk how they manage to be the cutest, but somehow they are.)
Anyway, this was just a great ep all around and it didn't feel crowded. Ep written by Naruki Nagakawa btw, who was also the one who wrote ep 56 (Chili vs Liko). Liko's growth as a character and how it gets expressed through battles as a vehicle being handled by very specific writers, etc.

At level 32, Marebrim evolves into Terrorbrim! Category: Terrifying pokemon Type: Psychic/Ghost Gender ratio: 100% female Origin: Mare, Kanashibari Name origin: Terror, Tebrim (Hattrem's Japanese name) Ability: Insomnia, Bad dreams (with magic bounce as a hidden ability) Pokedex entry: Some marebrims grow to become so terrifying that they will grow into terrorbrims. Terrorbrims will actively look for fear and/or anxiety in people and pokemon. They will then use their phantasmal braids to beat them with the strength of a professional boxer, paralysing them and sucking the air out of them. The soul is then sucked from the prey with their body being used as a mount after the paralysis wears off. During the consumption process, the terrorbrim is capable of seeing the prey's fears, and enhances them to make the consumption of their soul easier. Those who have seen them have reported them sitting on the victim as they die.
Tumblr media
The shiny is the same as the original.
Tumblr media
The Marebrim can be found in trees and while an active pokemon is sleeping. The Marebrim line has a signature move called sleep paralysis; a psychic type special move that paralyses opponents.

Some character notes and episode notes for HZ063, writing them down for future reference.
The ep begins with the trio heading to Mt Nappe where Grusha's gym is. As they reach the gym, Liko is told she'll have to wait a bit before her implementation test. Dot and Roy suggest trying out the Arukujira sledding. Liko eventually agrees, though she was reluctant at first because her test was coming up. They all end up having fun, though Liko panicked a bit because she thought she was going to fall off a cliff. Grusha sees her having fun, and and tells her she must be confident about her test if she is goofing off right before it. Then, he leaves.
Afterwards, the trio heads back to the Mt Nappe (where they asked to try the Arukujira sledding). There, Liko spots a magazine featuring Grusha. She learns that Grusha is a snowboarder, and sees a picture of him smiling, looking much different than he is now. The owner tells the trio about Grusha's past and that he used to win lots of snowboarding tournaments at a young age. However, Grusha suffered an injury during a tournament and retired from the competition. He became a trainer and befriended the Pokemon indirectly responsible for his injury. A a trainer, he climbed up ranks quickly and eventually became Gym Leader. Liko also learns that Grusha could have kept on snowboarding but since he couldn't produce the same results as before, he didn't. Grusha is harsh on everyone, including himself, and values results above all else. Liko reflects on this and tells Roy and Dot she'll do her best to make Grusha acknowledge her. She is then notified that her implementation test is ready to begin.
The rest of the episode is about the battle and the conclusion afterwards. Anyway, I won't describe everything about the battle here but the battle ended in Grusha's victory, Liko and him both used Terastal, and Grusha made her fail her implementation test since she didn't win the battle. He also refused to give her another chance as he thinks there are no do-overs in real battles and that results are all that matter. Liko thanks him, and he ends up leaving.
Anyway, this ep was written by Naohiro Fukushima (usually this writer handles Dot-centric episodes). By far, this is my favorite implementation test and highlights the strength of the series' writing. Using battles to elevate characters' traits and make them shine, telling a specific story, rather than just being a battle for the sake of it.
I loved, loved Liko in this episode. Her whole posture during the test was excellent. Even after the test (the way she bowed and thanked Grusha despite being disappointed about her failure was one of my favorite moments, she took things respectfully). She was confident but not overly confident in a way that would have make her come off as arrogant. Rather, she knew what she went through with her Pokemon. She knew what she could do and what she couldn't do. She was focused on the battle, she wasn't nervous (she learned from her previous battles against Kaede and Chili!) despite Grusha using harsh words during the battle and testing her. She was resourceful, smart and observant. I love her battle style. The few moments that stood out to me about her battle style is the precise control Nyarote had over Magical Leaf when she targeted her opponent's mouth. I like all the variations Liko comes up with using that move, since it highlights her creativity and artistic side. I also loved the moment Tebrim used her Mind Power to stop the ice attacks and send them back. Idk, I appreciate that Liko has such a sneaky style. It almost feels like something an antagonist would do, and I love that for her. I also liked the way she thought of using Nyarote's yoyo to grab Tyltalis and slam it on the ground before using Terastal. The way she creates opportunities to use Terastal in such moments is neat. Liko was really so cool in this battle and I felt spoiled as her fan. It really felt like the accumulation of everything she's learned so far.
By all means, she really applied everything she learned and used Terastal at the right timing, on top of switching her Pokemon to change the momentum of the battle and used their moves in smart ways. She didn't really do anything "wrong", yet she failed her test. Which I like. I'm really liking the direction they are taking so far with her implementation test. Part of me really wanted her test to go on for a couple of episodes because if it ended just right there, it would have felt a bit quick. Knowing what we learned of Grusha, he wouldn't have been satisfied with making her pass with such a conclusion (even though she applied everything she learned etc), so it feels fitting for his character to make her fail at first. So I am glad Liko's arc took this turn of events and that they're making her face these obstacles to make her growth feel satisfying. (The way they are making her face opponents with the type advantage in her battles is interesting too, because it means she is pushed in a particular way to improve and has to learn how to adapt/overcome, etc.)
I still need a bit more information on Grusha and see how this arc ends before fully forming my thoughts on him and the potential motivations behind his decision... Or what they're trying to convey with Liko's test. I can see where Grusha came from and he is right in that there are no do-overs in real battles (like against the Explorers), but I don't agree with him saying that results are all that matter and I don't think that's what the writers want to convey either (it would be a bit messed up if that were the case). I don't think Liko needed to "realize" that she is not "strong" enough either (she already realized that a while ago). I need to let these eps simmer a bit more.
Either way, I love Grusha. Liko getting this kind of confrontation is good for her character, since it shakes things up a bit. I like that he is cold and harsh and shows no mercy. Love the fact that he projects his issues on others, too. It's funny. He is cute, too. The way he was kind to Arukujira was nice to see, and I couldn't help but think of Liko who handles her Pokemon in a similar way. Like, a silent kindness. I also thought of Spinel and Amethio. Especially Spinel since he showers his Blacky with pats when they are both alone and he is very affectionate with his Pokemon, similarly to Grusha... despite how he is..
I think what I enjoy a lot about this confrontation is that Grusha is basically a character who will have to change his mind somehow, on some level. So that makes me excited to see what will happen. And I don't think it's just going to be training and rematch (I don't think it's the issue here, the issue is Grusha's mentality). Grusha's views will change somehow, maybe, and he'll be impacted personally as a person, and that's what makes this enjoyable for me. The way Liko's test is interwoven with the overarching plot as well, how they are adding to the Explorers side of the narrative through it... etc... I feel like Liko impacting Grusha personally is sowing the seeds for her potentially impacting the Explorers (Amethio, and even some others maybe?) in the same way.
I am hoping Liko brings a smile out of Grusha before this arc ends. And Grusha smiling will eventually lead to Amethio smiling. Or something. (The part with Grusha's past being revealed and them mentioning he ended up taking another path after retiring from snowboarding made me think about the Explorers... I mean, maybe eventually they can take another path too.)
Anyway, overall great episode. Dot was fun and great, the Pokemon were adorable and Liko was so good too. I think Grusha will end up being one of my favorite Gym Leaders from this region. The way he is included in the narrative is just my favorite kind of Horizons writing (just like how Nanjamo's character adds to Dot's side of the narrative and she is not there "just because"). Adding to the overall narrative and creating compelling conflict on the human side of things (instead of just being about battles or whatever). Looking forward to seeing how things will develop for Liko. I wonder if there will be a rematch with Grusha.

Something about the way Spinel, Friede and Liko's first Pokemon all share (or will share) the Dark type under certain circumstances (Spinel's Blacky being Dark type, Friede's Lizardon becoming Dark type upon Terastalization, and Liko's Nyarote will eventually gain the Dark type if it evolves into Masquernya). And how all three of them craft strategies around diversions, creating distractions, observations and running away.
Also thinking about how Spinel's Orbem is a Psychic type, similarly to Liko's Tebrim. Psychic moves being used to restrain or limit movements, or stop opponent's moves and use them against them. (Liko's Tebrim using her Mind Power during the battle against Grusha to stop her opponent's Icicle Spears and send them right back at it really reminded me of Spinel using his Orbem's Psychic moves to restrain Friede's Lizardon's movements back in HZ014.)
#liko#friede#spinel#character notes#i am having thoughts about this. and how all three of them have this cunning side to them in their respective styles#which is super interesting for main characters to have in the case of liko and friede#also thinking about the additional similarities between spinel and liko in that their main partners are cats(?? is blacky a cat ww)#i really wonder if spinel and liko will interact next ep because i find their strange similarities in terms of styles kinda fascinating#given that they couldn't be more different personality wise#i love that liko has a psychic type because the style that comes with such a type isn't necessarily one you'd expect from a protag etc#restraining movements or using your opponent's moves against them#(which is what spinel did against friede in ep 44 since blacky has foul play and that moves uses the opponent's strength against them etc)#i remember being blown away when horizons started airing#and that in the first eps liko was already 'i don't have to defeat them!' and used nyahoja's leafage to create a distraction and escape#(that was against zir and conia btw)#also the way friede left as soon as liko was okay at the end of ep 3#and how he didn't finish his battle against amethio because that wasn't a priority#i was like wow. the main characters are escaping because it's the logical thing to do?#and there is no moral value ascribed to running away?#i thought that was great ww#either way very interesting how all three of them (liko friede and spinel) have this trickster side to them#and it manifests differently etc
