Personal Reflection on Gamifying Apps as an Assessment Tool in Mathematics Education🎮
When reflecting on gamifying applications I regularly use in my mathematics classes such as Kahoot, Hot Potato, Quizizz, Educaplay, and Google Forms, it becomes evident that each tool brings its own set of merits and demerits to the table.
Kahoot 🎮, for instance, offers an engaging platform for interactive quizzes that truly energize the classroom atmosphere. However, its limitations become apparent when it comes to writing equations or dealing with more complex mathematical concepts like matrices. This can sometimes hinder the depth of learning that I aim for in my lessons.
Hot Potato 🥔, with its feature for uploading photos, adds an interactive element to the learning process, which my students love. Yet, the process of sending zip folders with image paths and having students unzip files can prove challenging, especially for younger learners who may not be as tech-savvy.
Quizizz 📝 has been a game-changer in terms of collaborative learning opportunities. Its open accessibility to other teachers' games on the same topic has sparked engaging discussions and peer learning in my classroom. However, its inability to support fill-in-the-blank questions limits its versatility in assessing students' understanding comprehensively.
Educaplay 🎓 has also proven to be a captivating tool with its variety of interactive exercises and games tailored to mathematics learning. Nevertheless, it falls short when it comes to writing equations compared to Kahoot. Kahoot's more advanced equation creation features give it an edge in this aspect.
In essence, while each gamifying application offers unique advantages, they also come with their own limitations. As educators, it's crucial for us to weigh these pros and cons carefully and choose the right tool based on the specific learning objectives and needs of our students. Finding the balance between engagement and functionality is key to creating meaningful and effective learning experiences in the mathematics classroom. 🧠📚

Between a rock and a hard place
I was lucky enough to see a pain specialist earlier this month, and it has genuinely been a life-changing experience. He has adjusted my pain medication regime, and recommended several changes to my lifestyle. I am now doing gentle exercise four times a week, getting at least seven hours of sleep a night and am making an effort to eat closer to the Anti-inflammatory Diet. I feel better and my pain has reduced to a 6 or 7 out of ten.
However, there was one area that I'm having trouble with - Stress. I am an English teacher who specialises in educating teenagers with low literacy. These kids are often neurodivergent, come from trauma backgrounds or have fallen through the cracks. In addition to helping their spelling and reading, I also build up their confidence and self-esteem and make them feel cared for and valued. This is not an easy task, and I often work or worry about work while at home.
Recently, several situations have occurred, both in my classroom, and between my colleagues in my office. One person in particular has been responsible for creating a very competitive and toxic environment in my workplace. I am constantly stressed, often to the point of tears, and I have noticed my pain beginning to flare up again.
So here's the crux of the problem - Do I stay or do I go? I want to stay to help my students and to help the school community. I love our school - It is small, I know pretty much all the kids, and my husband works there. It has been my family for nineteen years. But I also want to leave. I do not want to be constantly exposing myself to these stressors and risk compromising my health and its newfound improvements.
I have a therapy appointment tomorrow, and I'm also aware that a lot of these pressures are acute and may pass in the next few weeks. It could also be the Term Three blahs - It is our longest term without any breaks or public holidays. But I also have never thought about walking away before.
I might be shouting into the void, or just getting my ideas out of my head and into words. If anyone wants to comment on this wall of text, please do so.

being a teacher does funky things to your attachment style because you're in effect signing up for a complex web of relationships that all have an end date and all of you know it but you still need to go as deep into the relationships as is needed

Weekend Coffee Share, Ironies
Welcome to my Weekend Coffee Share, hosted by Natalie the Explorer on her blog. My coffee share usually is accompanied by chai tea, but today it is green tea with honey. The rules don’t forbid it, and if they did, I’d break that one. 🙂 A quiet, gray morning lets me sleep in late. Yes, I needed that. My plans were to go to the zoo today with my boyfriend. However, today is the day I discover that…

Reflecting on ClassDojo: Balancing Behavior Management and Academic Support 📚👩‍🏫
As an educator navigating the digital landscape of classroom management tools, I found myself drawn to ClassDojo for its promises of revolutionizing behavior management and communication. Indeed, its user-friendly interface and reward system seemed like a game-changer in fostering positive student behavior and simplifying parent-teacher communication. However, upon deeper reflection, I began to realize that while ClassDojo excels in certain aspects, it falls short in others, particularly in supporting academic progress.
ClassDojo's innovative approach to behavior management cannot be denied. The ability to award points for positive behaviors and easily communicate with parents in real-time has undoubtedly transformed my classroom dynamics. Students respond positively to the instant feedback and the gamification of their achievements, leading to a more conducive learning environment.
Yet, as I delved further into integrating ClassDojo into my teaching practice, I couldn't help but notice its limitations in supporting academic endeavors. Unlike platforms like Google Classroom, ClassDojo lacks the robust academic support resources necessary for comprehensive learning experiences. The absence of integration with Google Suite and Google Drive means that collaborative work and resource sharing are not as fluid, hindering students' ability to engage deeply with academic content.
This realization prompted me to reflect on the importance of balance in educational tools. While behavior management is undoubtedly crucial, it should not overshadow the academic aspect of education. A holistic approach that addresses both behavioral and academic needs is essential for nurturing well-rounded learners.
Moving forward, I believe there is an opportunity for ClassDojo to evolve into a more comprehensive educational platform by incorporating features that support academic progress. Integration with Google Suite and other academic tools could bridge the gap between behavior management and academic support, creating a more robust learning environment for students and educators alike.
In conclusion, my experience with ClassDojo has been both enlightening and thought-provoking. While it has revolutionized behavior management and communication in my classroom, its lack of academic support resources highlights the importance of balance in educational tools. As educators, it's crucial for us to continually reflect on the tools we use and advocate for platforms that prioritize both behavioral and academic growth. 🌱🎓
