Cabin Pressure fic prompt:
A Tunnock's teacake ends up on GERTI and it explodes mid-flight. Chaos ensues.
I suggest that either Arthur brought it on as part of the catering not knowing what might happen, or Douglas brought it on knowing exactly what might happen and it was part of a Scheme (probably Birling Day-related).

Grandma
I am reposting my first ever WordPress blog post iI miss my Grandma. She was perfect, mostly because she acted like she didn’t notice my bad behavior, knowing my mom take care of it. I was sure she loved me best of all her grandchildren, unaware all the grand kids felt hat way. She made the best teacakes, told the best stories, and always smelled of Johnson’s Baby Powder. Patiently, she’d…

Trying to figure out how to make Teacakes like my Grandmothers. Gonna hopefully keep notes as I tweak the recipe.
Ingredients:
1 cup Shortening [Butter Flavored Crisco]
2 cups of sugar
2 large eggs [Brown]
1/2 cup milk [Whole]
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring [It was a bit more]
3 cups of self rising flour [Gold Medal]
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Mix (cream) the shortening and sugar together. Mix in the eggs. Then mix in the milk & vanilla. Then stir in the flour, 1 cup at a time.
Drop spoonfuls roughly 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet.
Bake for 15-20 minutes.
______________________________________________
Issues:
The main recipe I referenced said to beat/mix well, so I did. But the dough came out REALLY wet, I couldn’t even roll it into a ball. Not even after putting it in the fridge/freezer for a while.
They were still too goopy after baking 20 minutes. We took them out at 25 since the edges were burnt.
The taste & texture were not what I wanted at all. There was a off taste from the bottom/edges being slightly burnt. It also made the outside harder to bite through and the inside was some kinda weird dry-airy-spongey texture.
I /THINK/ they were sweet enough? It was hard to tell around the bad texture & burnt bits.
So I either over-mixed them, or they needed more flour, or both. I also still want to freeze them on cookie sheets covered in parchment the way my grandmo did.
I also don't know if my grandmo used self-rising flour, thats just something from the recipe I found.

Valentine Sweets Organic Bakery & Café, 88 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91105
I was sad when I heard that Vanilla Bake Shop closed and was replaced by Valentine Sweets. Valentine Sweets specializes in teacakes. In some ways, it reminds me of Vanilla Bake Shop. It’s still a bakery and still has cupcakes. They also kept the display cases, coffee equipment and still serve Stumptown Coffee. The interior doesn’t look that different from Vanilla.
Valentine Sweets is Armenian owned and everything they bake and serve is organic. They have teacakes, cupcakes, cookies, cakes, muffins, brownies, croissants, eclairs, cheesecake, and pierogi. For drinks, they have espresso drinks, Armenian coffee, tea, date shakes, chai, milk tea, etc. There are Keto and gluten-fee options. The cupcakes and croissants are smaller than usual. The cupcakes didn’t look that appealing. I noticed the cupcakes were totally flat on top. Normally, they rise a little when they’re baked.
Matcha rose cupcake ($6): Small cupcake, not matcha cake but not sure what flavor the cake was – it was moist and not too sweet but didn’t have much flavor. There was a bit of rose flavored filling (cream? But it was more like pudding), a thick, smooth layer of matcha buttercream dusted with matcha powder, and a dried rosebud on top. The buttercream was dense and seemed cold (refrigerated?). It didn’t have much matcha flavor. The cupcake was decent but not as good as Vanilla’s or Dots.
The place is cute. They had a few non-food things for sale like candles and crochet teacakes (made in Armenia). Limited seating. It’s relatively expensive but also organic.
3 out of 5 stars
