More like "Masters of the 60 Cycle Hum," amirite? No, it was a good show but I am not a fan of more than 10 seconds of chicken picking. Song of the night was definitely "Beck's Bolero" but the terrific GE Smith was stellar.

Jayhawks Tour Update April 2024
Spring has sprung and we've got a bunch of shows coming up - with more announcements on the way.
We're back on the road in a few weeks with a show in St. Louis followed by two nights in Nashville. Our old pal and bandmate Stephen McCarthy will be joining us for the 2 Nashville shows, making for a very rare Jayhawks lineup.
We return to the east coast in early May with 4 shows, including a headlining slot at the Sing Us Home festival in Philly. NOTE: due to an unavoidable conflict, Karen Grotberg won't be able to make these May shows. As in recent years, Stephen McCarthy will be filling in with us again for this run.
In June, we'll be making our only Twin Cities concert appearance of the summer on 6/6 at the cool Utepils Brewing Company location, tucked away in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood. Then we're off to Spain to do some shows with our good friends at Heart of Gold.
On the Fourth of July we're doing the American Music Fest in Berwyn, IL, followed by a one off in Western Michigan. August finds us in the Ohio Valley for a couple of shows.
We're working on more 2024 shows to add to the schedule - the latest tour news can always be found on our website.

Operation Sleepy Hollow
(Dieter x horror loving female)
Words: 1, 789
Summary: you and Dieter go somewhere special for your two-year anniversary and Dieter has something extra special planned
Warnings: failed proposals but not what you think, body injury, crazy shenanigans, Dieter being Dieter and lots of adorable fluff and some fun history! I did lots of research but if I got anything wrong, please let me know!
Check out masterlist here
Dieter looked again at the small box made out to be the key from The Mummy. He’d lost count of how many times he’d sneak a look at it over the past year. He was hoping to go through Operation Sleepy Hollow: take girlfriend to a place she’d enjoy for anniversary, propose in romantic spot, spend the night making passionate love, best boyfriend award guaranteed.
For your second-year anniversary, you were going to a place you’d enjoy, somewhere you always wanted to go: Sleepy Hollow, New York. Originally called North Tarrytown, it changed its name to Sleepy Hollow in 1996. It came to popularity but Washington Irving’s ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ where the author now lays to rest in the cemetery.
Still having time before checking in, you went to Tarrytown in order to just wander around the picturesque town. The Tarrytown Music Hall wasn’t open, but it was still beautiful in its exterior and Dieter adored any historic exterior and so adored this town. After lunch, you went to the Sleepy Hollow Souvenir Store and tried to not buy so much.
Dieter insisted you splash out for accommodation, so you were spending two nights at the Castle Hotel and Spa. The room was lavish with a four-poster bed and fireplace. Wrapping his arms around you, Dieter insisted on immediately trying out the bed.
As you had planned a few nighttime festivities such as the Pumpkin Museum of Art, the Pumpkin Carousel, the Pumpkin Windmill, and the Pumpkin Planetarium, you saw no problem in this.
*****
The following morning, you had breakfast at the Headless Bagel, purely because of its name. After picking up some Halloween themed pastries from a bakery, came all the walking. Starting on Beekman Avenue, you made your way along the Hudson River to find the lighthouse which was built in 1883. You then made your way to the Sleepy Hollow, originally the Tarrytown cemetery which changed its name to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery to honour author Washington Irving. His monument was protected from picky tourists, but you went to honour him in passing. You found the Headless Horseman sculpture before making your way to the bridge. It wasn’t the bridge that was in the film or from the folktale as that was now a modern bridge commissioned by the Rockefeller family and now has a placard stating its historic location. This bridge was a beautiful wooden one and hauntingly romantic.
This was the perfect location for Dieter to propose. It didn’t want to do it on the bridge as he didn’t trust himself not to fall into the river. He waited until you both crossed the bridge. Your back was to him the moment he got down on one knee, he moved to get the ring out of his jacket pocket when something caught his eye.
“Ah! A snake!”
It was at this point you turned around to find your boyfriend running towards you in fear. He sort of glomped you but had enough sense to not fall to the ground. He pointed to where he thought he saw the supposed snake. You looked over to where he was pointing but only saw a stick.
He felt embarrassed at the blunder but was soon replaced by sadness that he missed out on the perfect opportunity to propose but he shook it off.
The next location the Union Church of Pocantico Hills held the last works by Henry Matisse. Dieter was mesmerised by the stained-glass windows, and he quietly explained the story of how Nelson Rockefeller commissioned the artwork for his late wife, Abby in 1948. He pointed out the Rose Window, Matisse’s last work and the nine windows which were designed by Marc Chagill, a Belarusian-French artist you hadn’t heard of, but you certainly found the windows beautiful.
It certainly cheered Dieter up and he thought of going to Plan B of Operation Sleepy Hollow: propose over a romantic candlelit dinner followed by a night of passionate lovemaking, bagging best boyfriend award in the process.
*****
After lunch, you went back to the hotel for a break before dinner. You had made your way to the bathroom, so Dieter knelt down to untie his shoelaces; he had the sudden thought of relocating the ring box, so he reached over to get it from his jacket but then something broke.
You heard a pained scream and rushed out of the bathroom. Dieter was on his knees unable to move with tears streaming out of his eyes. He was taking short breaths as moving any part of his body was causing immense pain.
“What happened?”
“My back!” he gasped. “My back!”
You put a hand to his chest, “Let’s try and get you up, okay?”
Putting hands under his armpits, you managed to get him sitting on the edge of the bed. You took his shoes off with no problem.
“I’m going to give you a painkiller, okay?”
He didn’t nod as he feared it would cause pain, but you gathered from his whimper that he consented, so you managed to administer it.
“Now I need to take your pants off.”
It was a gruelling experience for Dieter and the whole time he was whimpering in pain and mumbling how the removal of clothes should be sexy, but you managed to get him down to his boxers and lying face down on the bed. Leaving him for a few seconds, you came back from the bathroom with a hot towel and placed it on his back. He settled down after a few moans of pain. His back was very tense and twitched whenever you touched it.
The painkiller must have kicked in or the hot towel was working but Dieter was soon feeling less pain in his back. Soon after he felt a cooling sensation, the towel was removed from his back, and you were rubbing something in.
“What is that?” he asked.
“It’s Tiger Balm, it’s really good for muscle pain.”
He gave a groan of approval and soon you heard him snoring softly.
*****
Dieter woke up sometime later, he didn’t dare try moving and he worried that his back would flare up again, so he stayed where he was. He managed to follow you with his eyes as you came back into the room.
“How are you feeling?”
“A bit stiff,” he mumbled.
“Well, you are going to have a deep tissue massage tomorrow morning. I went down to the front desk and booked you in while I cancelled out dinner.”
“You did?” you nodded. “But what about the Farmers Market?”
“I can do that on my own. I don’t think you’d survive all that walking.”
He grumbled in agreement, “Unless there was lots of sitting.”
“Do you think you could handle sitting now?” He gave a mumble in place of a shrug, so you managed to slowly get him to stand up. After putting on his teddy bear coat, you moved him to a chair with good back support and placed an ottoman under his feet. He grumbled his thanks.
“I’m sorry I ruined our anniversary.”
“You didn’t ruin it, it’s not your fault your back died on you.”
“But we were going to have a romantic dinner and…” he couldn’t finish his sentence.
“Have a night of passionate lovemaking?”
Dieter almost started crying at the thought of all that was being missed out.
“We could try,” he shyly suggested.
“Sex won’t fix your sore back; it might make it worse.”
“It might. If I lie down the whole time and you can sit on my-“
“We’re not risking anything,” he pouted. “We can do gifts?”
He wiggled his toes in excitement, “Yes, let’s do presents!”
You moved over to where your bags were. Pulling out your present for Dieter, you moved over to his bag. He stopped you opening it, just letting you carry the whole bag over to him. Pulling out a wrapped gift, he handed it to you while you put his bag away and put your gift in his lap.
He gleefully but carefully unwrapped his present to reveal the glorious tie-die beneath.
“I’m Kenough?!” he held up the hoodie. “I love it!”
It was now time to unwrap your gift; it was a book.
“Making the Monster: The Science Behind Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.”
“I figured you might want to learn all the history science stuff behind your favourite book.”
You hugged the book close to you and made your way over to Dieter in order to plant a giant kiss on his cheek. You gently hugged him.
“I love it! I’ll not to read it all in one sitting.”
“You want to read it now, don’t you?”
“Yeah, but how about some room service?”
*****
“How was the massage?”
“Amazing! My back is still stiff, but it doesn’t hurt like hell anymore,” he was sitting in the armchair donned in his new favourite hoodie. “How was the Farmers Market?”
“Amazing! So much lovely produce! I could’ve bought one of everything, but I don’t know if I can bring back fresh produce.”
“We’re in the same country.”
“Yeah, but isn’t there a rule about bringing food across state lines?”
“I don’t think so.”
You hmphed, “I guess it’s just an Australian thing. But I got lots of other great things!”
You pulled things out of your tote to show your smiling boyfriend: jams, soaps, various baked goods as well as…
“Cheese?”
“You bet I got cheese! If I can’t bring it back with me, I’ll eat it all on the spot.”
“I think you can bring it with us.”
“I also got you a handmade heat pack. They told me that when it heats up, it smells like pancakes.”
“So I’ll smell like pancakes?” he loved the thought.
You were surprised you still had room in your suitcase after all your purchases, but you managed to fit everything in. Thankfully, Dieter brought his trusty Crocs with him, so he didn’t have to endure the thought of how he was going to put his footwear on.
The hotel staff were very helpful in getting your luggage and Dieter into the car and soon, you were both on your way back to New York City.
As Dieter watched the trees go flying past, his mind began to wander; he was rethinking his proposal plan. Halloween was approaching and you were both heading to a fancy costumed ball. It would be the perfect opportunity to propose as it was your favourite time of the year so you would already be in a happy mood. So now it was Operation Halloween Proposal: dress up and go to romantic themed ball, propose in super romantic setting, spend the night making passionate love, best boyfriend award guaranteed.

Aaron Copland: American composer
Aaron Copland, (born Nov. 14, 1900, Brooklyn, N.Y., U.S.—died Dec. 2, 1990, North Tarrytown , N.Y.), American composer who achieved a distinctive musical characterization of American themes in an expressive modern style. Copland, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, was born in New York City and attended public schools there. An older sister taught him to play the piano, and by the time he was 15 he had decided to become a composer. As a first step Copland tried to learn harmony through a correspondence course. Haltingly and in an environment not particularly conducive to art, he struggled toward his goal. In the summer of 1921 Copland attended the newly founded school for Americans at Fontainebleau, where he came under the influence of Nadia Boulanger, a brilliant teacher who shaped the outlook of an entire generation of American musicians. He decided to stay on in Paris, where he became Boulanger’s first American student in composition. After three years in Paris, Copland returned to New York City with an important commission: Nadia Boulanger had asked him to write an organ concerto for her American appearances. Copland composed the piece while working as the pianist of a hotel trio at a summer resort in Pennsylvania. That season the Symphony for Organ and Orchestra had its premiere in Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony under the direction of the composer and conductor Walter Damrosch. In his growth as a composer Copland mirrored the important trends of his time. After his return from Paris, he worked with jazz rhythms in Music for the Theater (1925) and the Piano Concerto (1926). There followed a period during which he was strongly influenced by Igor Stravinsky’s Neoclassicism, turning toward an abstract style he described as “more spare in sonority, more lean in texture.” This outlook prevailed in the Piano Variations (1930), Short Symphony (1933), and Statements for Orchestra (1933–35). After this last work, there occurred a change of direction that was to usher in the most productive phase of Copland’s career. He well summed up the new orientation: “During these years I began to feel an increasing dissatisfaction with the relations of the music-loving public and the living composer. It seemed to me that we composers were in danger of working in a vacuum.” Furthermore, he realized that a new public for modern music was being created by the new media of radio, phonograph, and film scores: “It made no sense to ignore them and to continue writing as if they did not exist. I felt that it was worth the effort to see if I couldn’t say what I had to say in the simplest possible terms.” Copland therefore was led to what became a most significant development after the 1930s: the attempt to simplify the new music in order that it would have meaning for a large public. The decade that followed saw the production of the scores that spread Copland’s fame throughout the world. Most important of these were the three ballets based on American folk material: Billy the Kid (1938), Rodeo (1942), and Appalachian Spring (1944; commissioned by dancer Martha Graham).
Copland's sheet music is available for download from our Library.
To this group belong also El salón México (1936), an orchestral piece based on Mexican melodies and rhythms; two works for high-school students—the “play opera” The Second Hurricane (1937) and An Outdoor Overture (1938); and a series of film scores, of which the best known are Of Mice and Men (1939), Our Town (1940), The Red Pony (1948), and The Heiress (1948). Typical too of the Copland style are two major works that were written in time of war—Lincoln Portrait (1942), for speaker and chorus, on a text drawn from Lincoln’s speeches, and Letter from Home (1944), as well as the melodious Third Symphony (1946). In his later years Copland refined his treatment of Americana: “I no longer feel the need of seeking out conscious Americanism. Because we live here and work here, we can be certain that when our music is mature it will also be American in quality.” His later works include an opera, The Tender Land (1954); Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson (1950), for voice and piano; and the delightful Nonet (1960). During these years Copland also produced a number of works in which he showed himself increasingly receptive to the serial techniques of the so-called 12-tone school of composer Arnold Schoenberg. Notable among such works are the stark and dissonant Piano Fantasy (1957); Connotations (1962), which was commissioned for the opening of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City; and Inscape (1967). The 12-tone works were not generally well-received; after 1970 Copland virtually stopped composing, though he continued to lecture and to conduct through the mid-1980s. For the better part of four decades, as composer (of operas, ballets, orchestral music, band music, chamber music, choral music, and film scores), teacher, writer of books and articles on music, organizer of musical events, and a much sought after conductor, Copland expressed “the deepest reactions of the American consciousness to the American scene.” He received more than 30 honorary degrees and many additional awards. His books include What to Listen for in Music (1939), Music and Imagination (1952), Copland on Music (1960), and The New Music, 1900–60 (1968). With the aid of Vivian Perlis, he wrote a two-volume autobiography (Copland: 1900 Through 1942 and Copland: Since 1943 ). Read the full article

https://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=4631 JM + LC: The two longtime friends and one-time lovers first met at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967. Instantly hitting it off, the two then embarked on a relationship which would burn out within a few short months. Mitchell would spend a month living with Cohen at her Laurel Canyon home after Newport. After their relationship as lovers fizzled out, Mitchell penned the wonderful song ‘Rainy Night House’ as a farewell to their short but sweet relationship. It is also rumoured that the timeless ‘A Case Of You’ was written with Cohen in mind (though never publicly confirmed). Whether this is true, however, the timing would suggest that it could possibly be the case.

‘A Case Of You’ is so open and so her. She’s telling you the truth. And she utterly hooks you from that conversation at the start of the song: ‘If you want me I’ll l be in the bar.’ It’s a tough woman, who’s got her dukes up about life, and she’s got an opinion, and that’s Joni.”
Crosby continued: “That line: ‘I could drink a case of you and still be on my feet.’ There’s a duality there that’s deliberate. On the one hand, she’s saying she can’t get enough of him. But she’s also telling him, You can’t bowl me over. Because you know she’s been through some serious trials and tribulations. Polio, Chuck Mitchell – not a good experience.

JM’s thoughts on L Cohen, over the years
https://jonimitchell.com/music/song.cfm?id=48
Last time I saw richard NOT about her ex, Chuck Mitchell. It’s an idea that grew out of a conversation, 'Oh, Joni, you're a hopeless romantic. There's only one way for you to go. Hopeless cynicism. And that was it That one little nugget became that song." In the song, Richard marries a figure skater and becomes a homebody.
https://www.jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2734
Jackson Browne played a big role in Joni's life during the Court and Spark period. How much of an influence was he on the songs that made it to that album? Jackson Browne was the one guy who really seriously got to her in a very painful way. They met and she fell in love with him at her near-nadir, depression-wise. He was just becoming famous, he was younger than she, and he is VERY good looking. He got to her. They fought quite a bit. He started cheating on her with Phyllis Majors, a beautiful blond model he would eventually marry and have a child with (and who would then commit suicide!). "
Car On A Hill" is a veiled description of a night Joni waited and waited for him to show up and he didn't because he was with Phyllis. Joni then staged what she has called a "suicide attempt," David Geffen rescued her and, having hit bottom, her healing then began. The details of this little known incident are in my book.
"The Same Situation"-it was "Joni's Warren Beatty song, just as "You're So Vain" was Carly's." I was told this by a boyfriend of hers who was around when Joni was dating Beatty. I describe it in the book - he's the bored playboy throwing himself on her as he did, serially, on any woman of the hour. Diane Keaton describes it well in her memoir: "When he comes after you, you can't say no." He, in his un-hip-to-her, "Let's talk about everything" cerebral mode, gets her to reveal what she'd rather keep inside. He's "like the church, like a cop, like a mother," in being authority-figure-like threatening to her in this regard.
https://www.songfacts.com/facts/jackson-browne/ready-or-not#
READY OR NOT, (Everyman, 1973, written in 1972?) Browne wrote "Ready Or Not" about Phyllis Major, a model and actress for whom he had ended a relationship with Joni Mitchell. Major was also pregnant with Browne's child at the time. When Major heard it for the first time, she was furious as she thought it unfairly cast her as somebody who had designs on domestic life. "She hated that song," Browne recalled to Mojo. "She said, 'I wasn't having a baby to get you. And the bulls--t about the washing machine is just insulting. So f--k you.'"
https://www.conservativewoman.co.uk/after-blue-what-joni-did-next/
FOR THE ROSES — breakup w JT, get together w JB, then quickly disintegrates. JT wrote “You can close your eyes” about JOni and her insomnia on Mud Slide Slim
Joni’s relationship with Jackson Browne was turbulent and short-lived. As I related in the previous piece about him, she was waiting for him to visit her one evening when he went for a drink at the Troubadour bar in West Hollywood and intervened in an argument between model Phyllis Major and her boyfriend. There was a punch-up, and Phyllis went home with Browne (they later married). When he failed to show up, Joni is said to have attempted suicide by taking pills and cutting herself. She denies this, but Geffen corroborates it.
After a period in residential therapy, Joni moved back into Geffen’s palatial Hollywood home... Trouble Child, inspired by her time in therapy – ‘up in a sterilised room where they let you be lazy’.
Court and Spark, which took almost a year to record, was released in early 1974.

Saturday, I visited my old hometown for some sightseeing and nostalgia—and naturally fit in some record hunting. The ancient Tarrytown Music Hall has been well-revived in recent years after lying dormant for most of my youth; in addition to hosting the Nick Lowes and Nancy Griffiths of the world, it has a small two-room record store” of donated vinyl above the marquee, deftly named Marquee Records. I didn’t find anything worth getting, but picked up a sweet Music Hall t-shirt. Around the block was a deli—that also had a plethora of used Mantovani for sale. Again, I didn’t get any vinyl, but I did get a bottled water…because I headed a mile south, parked, pulled my Dahon folding bike out of the trunk and rode across the Hudson River on The Bridge Formerly Known As Tappan Zee (as with most people who grew up in the area, I have a real problem with the fact that the new bridge that replaced The Tap has a different name; it will not be mentioned here). It was a gorgeous day and my inner 13-year-old, who once plotted with a friend how we could theoretically get to the Tap’s maintenance walkway underneath and cross the river was thrilled to get to finally live out the dream safely and legally!

Jayhawks Tour Update March 2023
We will be adding some new summer and fall 2023 tour dates soon. Stay tuned to The Jayhawks website and social media for the latest updates.
Tour dates & ticket links: bit.ly/JayhawksShows
Next up is our first trip to Europe in a few years. Tim O'Reagan had to drop out at the last minute due to circumstances beyond his control but we have recruited Austin, Texas drummer Conrad Choucroun to fill in. Conrad has played with many artists over the years - NRBQ, Bob Schneider, John Doe, Patty Griffin, Ron Sexsmith, et al - and we're very happy he was able to bail us out on such short notice. The only other alternative was to cancel or postpone these dates, some of which have already been pushed back (see: COVID). Tim will be back on the drum throne for our April east coast dates.
European dates April 7 - Blue Heart Festival - Alkmaar, Netherlands April 8 - Heartland Festival - Hengelo, Netherlands April 10 - Nalen - Stockholm, Sweden April 11 - Pustervik - Goteberg, Sweden April 12 - Slagthusets Teater - Malmo, Sweden April 14 - O2 Shepherds Bush Empire - London, England
Later in April we will be on the east coast for 4 dates with Freedy Johnston opening all shows. Port Washington, Tarrytown and Fairfield are sold out, but check back closer to the show date in case any tickets get released. There are still tickets remaining for Jersey City.
East coast dates April 26 - White Eagle Hall - Jersey City, NJ April 27 - Landmark on Main Street - Port Washington, NY (SOLD OUT) April 28 - Tarrytown Music Hall - Tarrytown, NY (SOLD OUT) April 29 - Sacred Heart University Community Theatre - Fairfield, CT (SOLD OUT)

Grunge Enthusiasts SAMSARA Set to Release Brand New Single: “how do you say my name?”
Fast-emerging hard rock renegades SAMSARA are set to dominate the northeast region this summer with the release of their new single "how do you say my name?," dropping on July 11th. The band is ready to captivate audiences with their dynamic performances scheduled throughout NY, NJ, and MA, including shows at The Porch in Boston, Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, NYC, and a highly anticipated return to the Great South Bay Music Festival on their home base of Long Island, NY, in July. SAMSARA, comprised of local New Yorkers from Queens and Long Island and partially based out of Boston, MA, features Dylan Trif (Lead Vocals), Charlie LoMonaco (Guitar/Background Vocals), John Devito (Bass), Ben Bustamante (Drums/Background Vocals), and Brendan Sandhovel (Rhythm Guitar). Their unique sound blends grunge, funk, metal, and alternative influences, creating an "alt sound" that fuses grunge with modern rock. The band has already garnered praise from music professionals, securing 2nd place at the Tarrytown Music Hall’s "Rock The Hall" in September 2021. Their music has been featured on SiriusXM's Channel 21, college radio broadcasts, and local radio stations. Listen to “how do you say my name?” here! SAMSARA has played at some of the most notorious rock venues in the tri-state area, regional music festivals, and street fairs, and has collaborated with seasoned professionals in the music industry. (Tarrytown au) Jack going to visit Kath at the school and accidentally walks by Davey playing piano and is taken a pack cuz whoa he’s really talented and cute???
AWWWWWWWW
jack just kinda listens to him outside the music room for a while and only stops when a student walking down the hall gives him a weird look
and for a while, it's all jack can think about
bc hot DAMN davey is so pretty and talented
so the next time jack goes to the school, he makes sure to swing by during davey's planning period
he walks into the music room and like. starts talking to davey, asking him about his day, etc. and then when he walks back toward the door, he just kinda. points at the piano and says, "you play?"
"well, i'd be a pretty lousy music teacher if i didn't."
so, then, David plays something for jack, and jack is absolutely SMITTEN

Fun Meta Asks For Writers
2. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project.
In my current project, I’m most looking forward to writing:
Ichabod’s decapitation
Meeting Francois
Levi and Mira
The latter two happen in the next episode, so to speak, but I have been thinking of moving ahead just to work on them. Mostly I’m just excited to write those characters - Francois is lovely and a great foil for Ichabod; and Mira and Levi are... just a lot and a very classic gothic romance - Levi has died and returned as a revenant, and Mira would like to (in the words of HIM) join him in death. But you know I love tragedy.
10. How would you describe your writing process?
Procrastinate until 10 pm.
Flip a coin - 50% of the time you will write solidly for two to three hours, barely stopping, hallucinating vividly; 50% of the time you’ll write about 500 words and then go to sleep.
If you fail, you may end up researching instead.
Music is critical to success. You might not remember this, however, and might sit there for an hour staring into space wondering why it’s not working.
Schedules do not work.
You need perfect peace; if you’re disturbed, you will not return to writing.
Write chronologically, edit in patches.
Your best ideas happen in the shower or the swimming pool.
20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
This is a loaded question! Here’s some hidden refs/easter eggs concerning the revenant story and New England folklore and culture of the 1800s.
Mercy Brown is named after an accused vampire at the centre of the New England vampire panic (1892).
Ichabod is obviously named after Ichabod Crane of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820), as is his horse, Gunpowder. Further, the girl at the centre of the story, Katrina Van Reller, clearly echoes in name Katrina Van Tassel, the funeral home Francois presides over is in Tarrytown, the setting of Sleepy Hollow, and it’s not accidental that Ichabod soon loses his head.
The Bontecou ancestral house, the Gables, is modeled off the House of Seven Gables in Salem, as made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s titular novel (1851). The family crypt is based on the Clarke family crypt at Hyde Hall, near Springfield, Massachusetts.
It’s mentioned in passing that Ichabod has a degree in “Medieval metaphysics” from a university variously in Arkham specifically and Essex County broadly, making it the Miskatonic University of H.P. Lovecraft’s novels, and particularly a joke from the parody musical Shoggoth on the Roof by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society - “There’s no finer place in the world to study Medieval metaphysics”.
The fictional town of Hockomock is implicitly located, by its name and references to the next closest town of Easton and nearby Black Brook, somewhere inside the infamous Bridgewater Triangle, a paranormal hotspot in the depths of Massachusetts.
The Witch Tree is based on a felled tree exhibited in the museum of Springfield, Massachusetts, and reputationally based on the Gallows Hill of Salem, and the recently revealed actual location of the Salem witch trial executions, hidden in the woods.
23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?
At this point, and still active, it’s definitely Sidney’s story, which I’ve been working on since approximately 2009.
Thank you for asking!
