Grayson Perry: The Story of Life
Grayson Perry is a British contemporary artist, born in Chelmsford in 1960. He studied at Braintree College of Further Education from 1978 to 1979 and graduated from Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1982. The public became aware of him after he won the Turner Prize in 2003, and later on through a series of television programmes which dealt with culture and social issues. Perry works in a number of mediums but is known mainly for his work in ceramics. Alongside this he works extensively in printwork, tapestries and also in textiles/garments, of which has primarily been through cross-dressing as his alter-ego “Claire”.
“Julie Cope’s Grand Tour: The Story of Life” are a set of tapestries which were created for Perry’s “A House for Essex”. This eye-catching house is located on the River Stour Estuary at Wrabness, Essex, and was designed as a secular chapel dedicated to Julie May Cope, a fictional Essex woman. Locals often refer to it as the “Gingerbread House” as its ornamental and ostentatious exterior strongly resembles gingerbread confectionery.
The two tapestries depicting Julie’s life are “A Perfect Match” and “In Its Familiarity, Golden” (2015). In the house these were expanded by two earlier tapestries, “Julie and Dave” and “Julie and Rob”. The vibrant, detailed tapestries act as a narration of Julie’s life.
“A Perfect Match” shows her birth during the Canvey Island flood disaster in 1953, and her passage through life, firstly as rock music-loving young woman, her failing first marriage (to Dave), parenthood and life in Basildon, with the brutalist style architecture of the town centre included in the work. The failing marriage is hinted at with the bouquet of flowers clutched by Julie, the attached note reading “I am so sorry x D ”.
In the second tapestry “In Its Familiarity, Golden”, Julie has moved on, finding happiness with a second, steadier marriage (to Rob), a move to the more affluent Colchester, a return to education, an interest in social issues (the peace and feminist signs on her cardigan and wellies suggest political activism) and a taste for the finer things in life. The right-hand side of the artwork is quite jarring, as it documents her sudden death after being knocked down by a takeaway delivery driver on a moped. It contrasts greatly to the haven her life seemed to be before.
The tapestries took several months each to sketch, and around 4-6 weeks to draw out in Photoshop on a Wacom Cintiq interactive display. Then they went off to a digital mediator at Factum Arte in Spain, who translated the images into a set of instructions for the digital loom. The adaptation process took three months.
Born in Chelmsford, Perry understands Essex very well, its people and the conflicting nature of its history, and its more recent development, culture and demographics. The garish imagery is based on the Essex life Grayson Perry has been immersed in throughout his life as he grew up there, his almost disrespectful take on life and also the research of the period when Julie was growing up. He has mentioned in interviews that he looked at a lot of wedding photos from the 1970s to get an authentic feel for the fashion and mood. The psychedelia particularly in “A Perfect Match” shows influence of religious portraiture/ iconography seen in the Renaissance period.
However, this vibrancy is juxtaposed with the mundane subject material, that being the moments we see of Julie’s very ordinary life. Perry uses imagery and text to highlight and observe social issues. The tapestries document the social mobility that has often been seen in the county of Essex, particularly for the “baby boomer” generation with Julie’s humble beginnings in Canvey, leading eventually to a contented life in much posher Colchester and the Suffolk borders. “In Its Familiarity, Golden” seems to depict a time in Julie’s life where she has finally identified the person she wanted to be and is achieving her life goals e.g. getting a better education than what was on offer in seventies Britain. There is also an air in “Familiarity” of pleasure being taken in the small things in life, like skateboards and French cheese and wine.
Ultimately, I think the tapestries of Julie’s life are designed to represent us all and life’s every-day realities and challenges. We can all see part of ourselves in Julie and some aspects of the dullness of her life. To some degree we also share the chapters that mark Julie’s life: birth, death and for the period in between: the celebrations, disappointments, loves, passions, education, careers, aspirations, parenthood, infidelity, troubled marriages, new interests, contentment, tragedy. The inclusion of baby Julie and her own father in the first tapestry and her death in the second seems to underline that life is just a short cycle.

The Hut Group, Lastminute.com and Domino’ help drive Visa Checkout past 1 million UK users
Visa’s online payment method, which enables consumers to pay securely in just a few clicks on any device across the internet with some of the world’s top merchants – Visa Checkout – has surpassed 1 million enrolled accounts in the UK.
The popularity of Visa Checkout has been bolstered by several major merchant integrations. Online travel agent lastminute.com became the first retailer in the UK and Ireland to integrate Visa Checkout, and since then, other prominent online retailers have joined including The Hut Group (whose brands include lookfantastic, Zavvi and Myprotein), AXS, Domino’s, Ebuyer, HMV, Match.com and Mighty Deals.
Such has been the success of the service that some merchants are already seeing as much as a third of payment volumes on their websites made through Visa Checkout. The UK is now one of the fastest growing markets for Visa Checkout globally

Consumer research commissioned by Visa shows that takeaway food is one of the key sectors for online spending in the UK. Over half (52%) of Brits have ordered takeaway online, a figure which rises to 85% of millennials between the ages of 18-35[1]. Visa’s Digital Payments Study 2017 also shows that a quarter (26%) of those surveyed made their takeaway orders using a mobile device, showing that consumers want quick, easy and seamless ways to pay digitally, something that solutions such as Visa Checkout can provide.[2]
Leading issuers including the Co-operative Bank, HSBC, NatWest, Nationwide and Royal Bank of Scotland are integrating their card art into the service for cardholders. In addition, new partners including Adyen, Braintree, CyberSource, Pay360, Judopay, SafeCharge, Worldline and Worldpay have signed up in recent months to offer the service to their merchants.

The Women’s March on Boston

The Braintree T Station on the morning of Saturday the 21st of January was packed with woman adorning pink hats and bearing bold posters. They waited in long lines for Charlie cards, as they sipped hot coffee and adjusted their gloves. They were patient and pleasant, and helped new arrivals find the back of the lines with kindness. As I stood with my mother, I caught the eyes of a group of girls, and instead of flickering away we held each other’s gazes and smiled.
Everyone knew where we, and all the other passengers, were going that day. The posters and hats gave away everything about our destination. The Women's March in the Boston Common would start at eleven; we all needed to be there promptly.
My mother, her friend Judy, and I, boarded the tightly compacted train and found three seats. Next to us, was a couple, a man and woman. A women entered the car and sat down next to the man as the train started to pull away from the platform. She apologized for the tight squeeze and said, “Don’t worry we’re all friends now!”
Everyone was making conversations with strangers. Judy and my mother complimented some women on their hats and were pulled into a conversation about how they made them.
Finally we arrived at Downtown Crossing and along with a number of other women and their parties we exited the train and made our way to the surface. As our eyes adjusted to the outdoor lighting we began to see the bricked road covered in even more women making their way to the park. All decked out in pink hats, and with each new party, a cleverer poster. Under the Macy’s awning we waited for other friends. As we waited, my mom, who had just downed her second coffee that morning, needed a bathroom and we entered the Roche Brothers across the way in search of one.
The inside of the store was confusing to navigate and after we had found the bathroom we had trouble finding the exit. A woman, dressed in the Roche Brothers logo and carrying a turkey, lead us the escalator out of the building. As we ascended, she looked at the poster in my hand and asked us about the March in a light Spanish accent. We answered her questions and just as we were about to leave the store she left us with some heavy parting words.
“March for me?” she asked.
“Of course I will,” I responded and then left the store to meet up with the rest of our party.
We entered the park with a wave of other women and the closer we got to the meeting place the more women and supporters we saw. Children held signs that said anything from “My IQ is greater than your entire cabinet” to simply just “Women’s rights are human rights!”
We walked along the concrete paths of the park and heard a faint music coming from over a nearby hill. We climbed to the top to get a better view of what was going on, and as we gazed down the other side, we went speechless. Thousands and thousands of women, and supporters, stood facing a giant screen with a stage nearby. We could barely see the ground beneath them as they covered so much of it. We pushed our way into the crowd and found a good spot to the right of a big tree and waited for the ceremonies to start.
The beginning of the day had been cold and overcast, but with each new speech a cloud disappeared until all was left was a beautiful blue sky.
After all the speeches had concluded the crowd started to move. It took about two hours for us to make it to the exit of the park to even begin marching. My mother compared the crowd to can of sardines and we had to carefully weave in and out of packs of people to get anywhere.
Along the path of the March we heard chants such as “when women’s (black/queer) lives are under attack what do you do? Stand up fight back!”and so on. People marched for the things like the Dakota Pipeline, for refugees, for immigrants, and of course the very basic women’s rights. Many fear that those very rights are going to be taken away from them, rights like affordable and accessible health care that Planned Parenthood provides.
It wasn’t until the end of the march that I heard the most important chant. It came from a small girl riding atop her father’s shoulders. She asked, “Show me what democracy looks like?” and the crowd responded “This is what democracy looks like!”
This chant was, I believe, the most important takeaway from the whole event. In the US, citizens are allowed to speak up about their beliefs, opinions, and rights without fear of retaliation from the government. Some may not agree with the ideas people marched for that day but that doesn't mean the marchers couldn’t march. The first amendment protects freedom of speech. We, as a people, must remember this in days to come.

The rapid rise of online and mobile retail sales has opened up a new market for payments companies to pursue, and is also creating a new generation of online payment providers called gateways, which act essentially as the online version of an in-store payment terminal.
Companies like Braintree, Adyen, and Worldpay help process online transactions, which are growing much more rapidly than in-store sales.
Payment gateways specifically stand to benefit from the rapid growth of the online processing market, worth an estimated $10.7 billion this year, even though their revenue is a very small slice of the total. BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, estimates that the US online processing market will increase at a five-year CAGR of 13% to $17.5 billion by 2020, driven by the increase in online shopping volume.
Gateways could moreover be disruptive to the old guard of processors. For example, Alipay has become a top-ten global merchant acquirer almost overnight because of its massive processing volume through Alibaba's marketplaces. And the emergence of online-to-offline (O2O) and omnichannel commerce is giving gateways a chance to divert significant in-store volume away from legacy processors.
