Bambi, Chapter 1

You are my Bambi, girl, I am your candy, tell me what are you waiting for?

Summary: As an archaeologist who works on the Ancient Greece, you were on the verge of excavations’ session. While you have been preparing your team, you learned that your institute decided on your team has to work with another team as they wanted the outcome as a collaboration. The head of other team was your biggest rival, a scumbag in your eyes: Byun Baekhyun.

You two were supposed to work together for three months, in a Greek Island, Chios.

Could you manage to not kill Byun Baekhyun for three months?

Note: This story will be four or five chapters if I will not change my mind in the meantime. It is inspired by my major; however, I do not have a complete knowledge on archaeology, I am a historian. Chapter One: UN Village

June, Incheon Airport

You were more than ready for the session.

Both of you, were nothing but two leaders who hated each other equally.

You were eyeing each other with saying no words since your teams came together in the airport. Before this particular moment of departure, you refused to meet with Byun Baekhyun, putting aside meeting with him, you refused even dropping an e-mail in order to let Sunkyungwan Team about Sejong Team. You were clear and strict as fuck, even though two teams had to work together for three months, you had zero intention to get accustomed with the other team leader.

The weather was sunny, nice and warm, however because of you and Baekhyun, your team members were feeling like they were trapped in a fucking blizzard during the coldest winter.

You were aware of your team members had positive opinions of that scoundrel, especially the girls, as you had your first-handed experiences because of your stupid classmates, Byun Baekhyun was very famous of his abilities to cast a spell on women. The problem was he was also famous as a serial dater, serial killer type of men.

A bastard, nothing more nothing less.

“Indy,” one of your team members, Minseok, called you. Although, calling you as Indy was also a habit of Minseok, it was also an obligation for the others, you insisted on calling you by your nickname or your name, instead of calling you as sunbae. You did not like the hierarchical titles. “Should we move into the control point?”

“Yeah, if you are ready.” you replied, grabbing your luggage and the rest.

“I guess we have to alert Sunkyungwan people since we will fly together.” Hyesun pointed out, your eyebrows knitted.

“I guess,” you recall her words. “They also have this information, so we do not have to alert anyone, we are not their babysitters.”

Hyesun’s cheeks were blushing after you kindly scolded her, but she was clever enough to hold her tongue. Your dislike towards Sunkyungwan was not a secret as you used every opportunity to show it. You led your team to the kiosks, counting the heads automatically. You had six here, you were going to have ten more when you arrive to Chios whose coming from all around European universities. With thirteen Sunkyungwan students, the excavation was going to shelter almost forty members. It was going to be massive, you had to admit. You never had more than twenty students in the field till now, but you were going to lead an extraordinary team as Junmyeon craved into your brain’s folds with his hammer of words.

You wished to be with Junmyeon right now, you were more tense than usual. Junmyeon could put you in more stable mood, however you even did not think to name him while the executives were asking your possible candidates. He would kill you merciless, you knew it very well.

Eh, at least you got Sehun, Junmyeon’s brother in your team, he had a lot of similarities with Junmyeon even though he could be noisier than anyone you know, however you accepted him as your dongsaeng, as his precious noona and role model, you also knew how to put him in an order. Then you had Minseok, the eternal field-partner of yours. He was older than you, although he was engaged in a Ph.D. programme in abroad, he willingly accepted your invitation. You had four seniors, Shinhye, Yixing, Jongdae and Hyesun.

To your dismay, two of the seniors who you really could want in your team, Chanyeol and Kyungsoo were in that bastard’s team. You were of the fact that they were immensely close to each other, but you wished to have them in your team as their abilities were precious.

Especially Doh Kyungsoo.

You missed that fucking bastard who preferred to be with Baekhyun.

Life, you inhaled. It was not going exactly in the way you could ask.

“On your foot, soldiers.” you called your team around you. “Do you collect all the materials you will be in need of?”

“Yeah.” Jongdae cutely pointed to his tiniest bag. “I am ready to excavate.”

“Exactly you will need every tool you have.” Shinhye smacked her husband’s shoulder. Yeah, you had a married couple in your team, although you were a year younger them, you always regarded yourself as their big sister, if not a mother. “You are going to work too much, Dae. I have sleepless nights because of the burden on your shoulders.”

You could not help but burst into laughs after the look Jongdae gave to his wife. Those idiots, they were so lovely and instead of their endless scolding sessions, they were incredibly fond of each other.

Sometimes you wonder, how having your significant other by your side would be?

You slightly shook your head, quickly climbing out of this deep cliff.

“Let’s go!” you exclaimed, jumping to the air. “Sejong is ready for the session!”

Baekhyun was watching you with a disgusted expression.

“Move on, Baekhyun.” Chanyeol pushed his body to forward. “We will miss the flight, Goddamnit.”

“Give him couple of minutes.” Kyungsoo chuckled. “He is fucking the girl with his eyes, frankly, he is doing it unapologetically.”

“Which girl?” Chanyeol’s eyes widened. “Do you mean, that girl? You c-

“Of course, I am not.” Baekhyun interrupted Chanyeol, staring at Kyungsoo. “She can go and fuck herself.”

“Well,” Kyungsoo stood up, placing his book into the bag. “I guess, you are going to be one to fuck her, but maybe I am wrong.”

“In her dreams.” Baekhyun laughed. “If she can manage to dream something like this, but I do not think so. That little freak can put even the nuns into a shame.”

“She is beautiful to be honest.” Chanyeol said with no different intention but observing your features carefully. “Okey maybe not the hottest girl in the town, but she is pretty, and I heard she is very clever.”

“She is.” Kyungsoo approved. “But she kicked Baekhyun’s ass twice, so he cannot endure her presence.”

“She never,” Baekhyun grunted lowly. “Kick me or my proverbial parts!”

“Did someone talk about kicking some asses?” Jongin appeared out of nowhere. “I am in.”

“Shut up, Jongin.” Baekhyun rolled his eyes. “Let’s pick the team.”

The smile on Kyungsoo’s face irritated Baekhyun, he wanted to erase that fucking grin so bad, punching his face but Baekhyun had to hold his manners as the team leader. If they would be in their flat, he could already beat the shit out of Kyungsoo, at least he would try.

Baekhyun hated the fact that Kyungsoo had the exact past with you and him. Three of you entered the department together, instead Kyungsoo went to another university to pursue his master, in the end he testified every moment between you and Baekhyun.

That’s why he was smiling since he learned you were going to be the other team leader.

Baekhyun was aware of the close relationship between you and Kyungsoo, one of his best friends.

Quickly Baekhyun led his team to the control point, close to your team. He was avoiding from this step, however as the leader, presenting his fucking team to your team was his responsibility. When they arrived, he took a deep breath.

“Good morning to all.” his blood started to boil when you turned to him with a displeased face expression. Your eyebrows were knitted, your fucking lips formed as a thick line, your dislike was palpable and Baekhyun knew his own face was mirroring your feelings. “I hope you are fine, could you let me present my team to you?”

Baekhyun wanted nothing but cut the shit off.

“Good morning.” you answered between your teeth. Your voice sounded extremely creepy. “Yeah, go for it.”

You do not make a favour to me, bloody woman, Baekhyun thought but he put all his efforts to control his words.

“My name is Byun Baekhyun, I am going to lead Sunkyungwan Team this year.” he looked at your team members, quickly memorized their faces. “I really look forward to work with you, I wish a good session for us. They are my members, Park Chanyeol, Doh Kyungsoo, Kim Jongin, Kim Danbi, Lee Taemin, Lee Donghae, Kim Jonghyun, Kim Kibum, Lee Seungjo, Kang Seulgi, Im Yoona, Kim Taeyeon and Kwon Yuri.”

“You are like a troop, huh?” one of your girls smiled after Baekhyun finished his presentation.

“More or less.” Baekhyun smiled back to her. What a surprise to him was the transformation of your face. You warmly smiled to the members and bowed to each of them.

Baekhyun raised his left eyebrow, but he could not avert his eyes from your smiling face.

It was pleasant like a spring day and when you smile your eyes were shining.

“Thank you.” he heard your voice. “My team is not big as yours, Park Shinhye, Kim Jongdae, Zhang Yixing, Oh Sehun, Kim Minseok and Song Hyesun.”

“You forget yourself.” Minseok slapped his forehead and rolled his eyes. “Indy is going to lead Sejong Team as she has been leading us for the last two years, you can put your faith on her, she is the greatest.”

“Indy?” Jongin repeated your nickname with a surprised face. “Are you foreigner?”

“Do I look like?” you laughed and prevented yourself from flinching his forehead. He was such a cute kid. “That’s how my team call me.”

“Ah.” Jongin blushed and you could not control yourself anymore.

“But if you want, you can also call me as Indy.” you grinned like a Cheshire cat. “Everything must be equal for the teams since we are going to live together during a whole summer.”

“I would like to.” Jongin bowed to you.

“So do we need to add sunbae when we call you?” Kyungsoo asked.

“Have you ever called me as a sunbae, Doh Kyungsoo?” you coldly replied. “Did Sunkyungwan change your behaviours?”

“Gardens of roses turn to garths of thorns in a second.” Kyungsoo murmured but he was smiling to you, then he opened his arms, catching you off guard because you knew that Kyungsoo was not a huge fan of hugs. “Will you salute me as a good friend, or will I start calling you as sunbae?”

“Shut the fuck up, Doh.” you inhaled, but actually you were happy to see your still-working-on friendship. You moved to hug him, he held you tightly and lifted you to the air, then turned around himself, made you laugh like a 5-year-old girl.

Baekhyun did not like what was happening before his eyes. Kyungsoo had to be with Baekhyun, not hugging you for his fucking dear life, or lifting and turning you around like you were very dear to him. He hated sharing his friends with you, he already lost Junmyeon, he wanted to keep Kyungsoo and Chanyeol to himself. You should be fucking away from them, they were Baekhyun’s and only Baekhyun’s friends.

And there was another fragile issue that Baekhyun had been keeping in the deepest point of his heart and mind, like the palace of Nyx in the darkest part of Tartarus. Extremely delicate, horrendous, and even atrocious.

Baekhyun was aware of a strange presence was lying down beneath his hatred, dislike and continuous loathe towards you, there was a layer of curiosity, something could feed different layers and causing an earthquake in his life. Baekhyun knew that you were his biggest rival, but you became his rival by your talents and intelligence. He knew this and this piece of realization doubled his hate towards you.

The funny part was the things he did not realize. Baekhyun was full of confidence, he was capable of performing even miracles, however he never perceive the fact that you were also a miracle.

“So, what we are going to do?” Chanyeol asked to everyone with a huge, happy smile. Baekhyun fended himself off moaning, happy virus Chanyeol already sensed the chance of levitating the mood between the teams and playing along with it. “Are we boarding?”

“Yeah, let’s go.” one of your boys, Sehun, came close to Chanyeol. Baekhyun and you immediately glared them, noticing the chemistry between these two. Both of you wished to keep the teams apart from each other in order to reduce the obliged interactions between the leaders, but it seemed not possible even from the beginning. Baekhyun was cursing between his lips, you were swearing at the executive board in your mind.

“Indy,” Shinhye whispered to you. “Are you okey? You look like wanting to kill one of us.”

“Not you.” you answered without thinking, then registered to your words. “Ignore me, Shinhye, I am a little bit tense right now.”

“We got your back.” she blinked at you and held Jongdae’s hand. “Let’s start the adventure!”

What an adventure, you thought but silently joined them. Kyungsoo also was walking next to you.

“Why the heck you went to Sunkyungwan?” you spilled the bean. “I always believed you would stay in Sejong.”

“Yeah, that was my intention.” Kyungsoo was plain as always. “However, Sunkyungwan gives me more opportunities to secure my career, Indy.”

“I know.” you had to admit. Sejong was not generous as Sunkyungwan. “Sorry for my selfish words.”

“No worries.” he beamed. “It happens all the time, but I am really happy to work with you again.”

“Old but gold days, huh?”

“Well, it was not purely gold,” Kyungsoo followed the flows and ebbs. “Do you remember when we were almost expelled from the university?”

“Is there a way to forget those days?” you immediately took a look on Baekhyun. It was his fault, obviously. “We were shitting in our pants instead of the one who put us in that situation.”

“Come on,” Kyungsoo chuckled. “It was not only his fault, Indy, our hands were also crimson red.”

“Let me recall the memory, Doh,” you pinched his hand, he playfully pushed your fingers. “Excuse me if I am wrong, however that scumbag was the one who challenged you to confiscate the coin, because of your involvement into the incident, I had no choice but dragging your ass out of shit.”

“They caught two of us in the crime field.” Kyungsoo burst into laughs. “Professor Lee went ballistic and scolded us like we just killed a person cold heartedly.”

“And you could not see the reason behind it?” You were cutting Kyungsoo’s body with your eyes. “If someone tries to steal a coin from the excavation house during the session, I will kill them for sure. We were so lucky, the one who caught us was Professor Lee.”

“I heard you are strictest when it comes to excavation.” Kyungsoo assured you. “But try to not kill us.”

“The only one I am going to take down,” you shivered with the memory, Kyungsoo was already regretful to remind it to you. Well, maybe not so much because he wanted you and Baekhyun to realize the potential relationship you could have, and the easiest way in order to put you two in touch was making you angry. “That bastard if he will behave like the old days. We are not children anymore.”

“Have you ever been a kid?”

“Fuck off, Kyungsoo.”

“You did not change even a bit, Indy.” Kyungsoo made his statement. Obviously, you were going to keep this to yourself, taking his silent approval made you were more than happy. “You are still a pain in the ass.”

“And you are still a good boy.” you grinned, watching his lips formed around silent laughs. “Such a cute puppy for me, let me see your wagging tail.”

“I am sorry to interrupt your flirting session,” Kyungsoo turned to Baekhyun’s deadpanned face. “However, we have to move.”

“When you come across to a pretty girl,” Kyungsoo did not miss the chance of returning the favour. “You have to flirt with her. Wasn’t it your advice?”

“Yeah.” Baekhyun looked at you, then turned to Kyungsoo.

You knew what was going to happen.

“He said pretty girls,” you tucked the words in Baekhyun’s mouth before he could open his fucking damn mouth. “To my dismay, I have never been pretty to correspond the standards of Byun Baekhyun the Magnificent. I am crying for the lack of beauty almost every night, I mean living without Byun Baekhyun’s interests… Such a misery.”

Kyungsoo bit his lower lip in order to hold his laugh, Baekhyun’s fists were clenching but you did not stop there.

"Ah I almost forget to ask for the name of that little village, Baekhyun.” you directly looked at his eyes since ages. “Where the girl you desperately wanted to bless with your attention left you? UN Village?”

You immediately spin on your tiptoes, then slipped towards to Sehun, leaving two of them behind of you, refusing to look at back. In the meantime, Baekhyun was throwing daggers to your back, grinding his teeth, his jaw was extremely tensed. Before Kyungsoo could stop him, he swiftly came to your side, you felt his breath on your neck.

You shivered.

You fucking shivered and Baekhyun noticed that.

“You are playing with the fire, as always.” he whispered to your ear before someone could notice what he was doing. “Did you forget who was burning with fire, baby girl?”

He quickly disappeared and started to make such a fuss in order to gather his team members around himself. You were frozen, after years, you were frozen, you missed the little smile on the corner of Baekhyun’s mouth.

You were on the verge of screaming because of the frustration you had felt. You forced yourself to proceed, walked into the plane, helped your team in order to set their belongings and place into their seats, then you retreated your own seat. It was comfortable and you could easily snatch a blanket. Your wish became true, even quicker than you expected because Sehun, your wonderful Sehun, already brought a soft blanket for you. You smiled at him, actually forgiving him for building bonds with Chanyeol since they changed their seats in order to sit next to each other and weaved your legs around the fabric.

Your brain was in autopilot, you were lost in the horrible memories. You did not want to recall them, you buried them into the cemetery of your memory. You wished nothing but never remember that day.

The day in that village.

Baekhyun was mad at himself.

His face was clouded, for the first time he was silent and sitting on the farthest seat in the plane. He really wanted to be alone, and since being vocal about his feeling was so natural for him, he told his need to the team. They willingly let him to do what he wanted, as a result, he was looking out of window, hell if a person could see something out of a plane’s window, and he was cursing himself.

He knew it was going to be a chess play. Between you and him.

It has been always like the chess.

There was a bond between you and Baekhyun, even thought you two always refused it, you also were aware of that bond. You equally hated each other and if there was a thing which could make you happier than seeing each other’s downfalls, that was the opportunity of being the one who digs the other’s grave by their hands.

He was sure on he was going to be the one who sets your body on fire, then finishes you. He was sure on he was going to be the victor, the one and only champion.

When he kills you, erases your name for all eternity, when he condemns you with demnatio memoriae, he will calmly breathe again.

You were a pain in the ass, even when you were not around of Baekhyun, you had a place in his mind since that fucking day he met you. Your presence was like a tree, how much he could try, he could neither find your roots in his mind nor cut them all.

You were his enemy; he was going to treat you as you deserved.

There would be no turning back.

But…

He was mad at himself.

He made a wrong move while he was trying to disturb you, shake your cage in order to give you a lesson.

He also remembered.

Hi! Me again! So, part of it is how Kpop "vocal soup" is done, and how they're trained! Sms a little bit of an outlier in the sense like all the big 4 they tend to have one or two "special" tones per group-but even then those are kind of interchangable u less you're a fan or have a good ear. I hope it becomes more clear what I mean and I only used groups I'm a fan of so hopefully it comes across as respectful but clinical lol. NCT in general has strong vocalists but the same principle still applies and my biggest !! In that not really mattering is how SM has most of the boys separated when they're recording/how many cuts there are in the BTS videos showing that they're still being coached/guided on camera not really off the cuff bc sm/Kpop, and who gets what lines. I just watched the universe recordings and I think it's a good example. My English also sucks and this is super long lmao!

Kpop runs off "vocal soup". Tara's CEO,brave brothers, and the guy who did shinees earlier work have all used the term at some point (I'm only 23 but Ive been here for a while lol) and I think you can still find proof of it when you go through old blog forums. Vocal soup is the idea of keeping tones generally indistinguishable from each other so you can swap vocalists out/ghost vocal. Like obviously if you know let's say 127 for example you can hear the difference between Jungwoo and Haechan and even Doyoung. But if you weren't a fan and compared Xiumin and Suho from exo it'd be REALLY easy for sm to "vocal soup" them-and I'm almost sure like in every group they have. A good example of that in NCT is probably the rappers and the mid range/high range vocalists like Jaemin/Jeno,Kun/Ten. Exos a good concrete example of that at the top of my head but this is for every group. You can hear that Chen and Kyungsoo have really different tones from each other, but if you put Kyungsoo and Baekhyun together or Xiumin, the difference is in how high they get, or Sehun/Kai-theres a difference in overall range and fans can spot the difference because we're so indindated with songs but the GP/casual listeners aren't. And in the studio it's common to "vocal soup" and mix those voices together-their actual tones aren't all that different. Each singer follows an archetype-Jonghyun/Chen/Taeil/Haechan maybe goes here? , Winter/Taeyeon/Wendy ect. It's why shows like that guess where x singer is behind the door! Out of six ppl with similar voices is even capable of happening-the actual vocal tone is trained (and why in other countries for the most part-its omg who could this voice be*I'm speaking in generalities a little). It's why it's such a big deal when they have singers with *special voices*. Taeil might have the higher pop vocal range sm loves but they can't train out Haechans tone-and to a lesser extent Jungwoo,thats why they're always getting similar sort of parts in song structures. It's why YG has a Bom/Rose archetype in each of his girl groups. I'm positive that the new yggg will follow the same pattern of one very unique voice and singing style-Bom sings everything stacatto which Kpop fans call bad singing lol, And rose is purposely breathy even when she belts. SNSD is also a good example-in the chorus all the girls are supposedly singing-but Jessica barley ever actually had chorus linea-its usually Seohyun because she has the Sm bright voice sound-and whoever else. But they'd make all the girls mime out-and vocal later it to make it sound more full. Like idk if you know who Girls Day is or Secret of 4minute. Take their lead and main vocals, just from group to group-and the tones are virtually indistinguishable. Kpop groups are purposely built that way-and the big thing that differentiates kpop choruses is usually how many vocals they have layered into the chorus-but that sound of how many people you think you can hear-might not actually be happening at all.

Usually-and what I think is also happening to Nct-is that they generally have an idea of who's gonna sing what a couple years into their debut,maybe even as early on as the first 2 or 3 cbs/repeating song structure. Jungwoo/Haechan/Jessica/Sunny/Rose are usually always gonna get the "emphasize" parts of songs-the prechorus/bridge/adlibs usually versus the main verse just because of their tones-same sort of thing for rappers in non heavy rap groups (where it's reversed). But the first couple years a kpop group is placed together they have everyone run through the whole song regardless of vocal ability, or all the rappers try the raps parts (but rappers also sing so they probably get both-and depending on the grouo-the rappers ARE the special voices/"umph"-or just other Archetypes that can be switched out from one a other. Jarmin raps like yangyang raps like Jeno raps like hendery ect) and all the vocalists try the vocal parts. And then the producers cut and paste who does what. As it becomes more clear and with guidance from the CEO/directors usually the producers tend to have a template for who does what-and part of that is also following the direction of we need so and so to have more lines so they get more screentime/build in a dance break for the dancers please/rappers need lines if it's not a rap group ect ect. Everything is super decided-theres no way it's as lazze faire as sm has it in those videos, everything is being cut and pasted and probably reworked AGAIN after whoever it is approves it. And that's not the producers, at Sm it's directly lsm and his board for every come back.

(And it's not just kpop that does this-pop singers get vocal souped a lot, a lot of the famous pop girls and indie pop singers are being either ghost vocaled (jlos whole career lol) or vocal souped by unnamed singers/producers mastering and remixing the demos into their songs so it's a more standard pop voice).

They have the NCT boys separated when they're recording because it takes HOURS to record even simple small parts usually, the videos arent just short, they're SUUUUPER condensed. Its most likely the 3-4th time any of them are ever hearing the song-if sm/whatever company is even showing the group the song before the studio-and just because they're being directed to record it doesn't mean it's going to be released. Mark alluded to having recorded child ages ago-and other songs too. As if it's your last was a 2ne1 song that's on camera being played out of YG years ago-and bp had a recording of it from debut but didn't release it until later. When sm is doing the BTS videos they're leaving out the parts that weren't chosen, like in my guess probably making Haechan and Jungwoo sing the same lines over and over and then having whoever wasn't chosen for x come back and record-or most likely making the boys sing every part they can and then when the producers have decided this person goes here here and here-getting them to come back and either reshoot for sms camera(cynical interpretation) or coming back and redoing lines that they were chosen for/switched, they can easily just play Haechan listening to Jungwoos parts because they probably have Jungwoo singing every feasible part they could think of. (This isn't to you but to loop fans in general, Ive seen people be mean to Aespa lol, All of those BTS videos are still Sm edited, and ultimately fanservice/pr).

A big reason for the vocal soup technique is because if someone's voice stands out-not just in their group but in general-its harder to replace. I like skz but that one dude leaving is a good example as to why-nothing really changed in their sound with him gone. All they had to do was make their vocalists go in their upper range, and they can recreate the tone almost exactly. Even kpop rappers tend to have the same tone. And I'm only saying kpop bc we're talking Abt nçt but the same thing works for western music-theres a very "bright" sort of tone for female sopranos in musicals-and they're taught to sing a certain way with their vowels ect. You don't really WANT a super unique vocal tone because you're onstage acting out a role-and hopefully get other roles-even if youre a technically skilled singer it won't matter if your voice detracts from the production. Most pop singers if they're female are mezzo sopranos-the most common female vocal range, and they're taught to enunciate and sing a certain way by genre. A RnB is her depending on the decade is going to enunciate differently in the 90s to now. A non poo example is probably paramore-Hayley has a soprano voice which is VERY high but she usually sings her lower notes in the chorus bc that's more accessible/more of that early rock sound they were going for-and she purposely enunciates a certain way to get her voice to break because it's rock music. It's not the Os and As like Beyonce/Adele, it's her Cs and Hs where she usually purposely causes a voice break-or on the pop rock end why all those dudes like the Wonder Years/Bowling for Soup even years apart all have the same vocal affect. i have 2 thoughts mainly coming from this, the first is that i NEVER would have guessed how ... relevant? jungwoo actually is in the production process. i never rly found jungwoos tone remarkable i thought he was just naturally breathy/he reminded me of xiumin in that sense. which i agree i am suho biased but he and xiumin were very similar to me too when i was getting into exo and he just simply isn't top 3 vocalists in exo even though he isnt bad. i wonder if this is connected to how yeri doesn't get a lot of individual lines/is relegated to the rap parts but does a lot of the hidden/grounding vocal parts?

forgot my 2nd thought lol im still a lil high but another thought that comes is that dichotomy between unique and non unique tones. i first noticed this with seulgi (unique) and wendy (non unique), i concede wendy is prob better technically but seulgis voice has more character (and i didnt use to like her voice at first). id never heard of the vocal soup thing but it makes so much sense, especially when sometimes it is a better biz decision to cram a bunch of randoms/mediocre singers in a group as opposed to cutting a lot of ppl

so basically im feeling like this means sm/kpop (sm being the frontier of modern kpop in so many ways) is MORE processed than we all thought it was. i wondered how it could be possible/effective for companies to micromanage comebacks so deeply as they do, when often they will end up getting criticized on the same minute level. i guess sm/etc. see a profit incentive to accept it when some of their decisions are poorly received. there are some things abt the kpop life that we will never know but again its the same with hollywood and the us music industry etc. etc.

Gonna brag about Infinite. They, imo are the best group as far as vocals and just everything. When I listen to Infinite I always get all these emotional feelings and they do such a wonderful job of showing emotions through their voices. My fav example of this is Man In Love you can just..ugh they..ugh I can’t describe it. The flow of their vocals, the way they harmonize like, yes idols sing together or in sync but it’s not a beautiful harmony of sound like Infinite. When I listen to Man In Love or Paradise or 60 Seconds, the version where all the members sings with Sunggkyu you can clearly hear they emotions in their voices like they’ve fallen in love, gotten married, got devorced, lost a loved one you can hear it all in their voices. Infinite is the best male vocalist group like they just are and they are legends and icons and I cannot put words together but you can feel it when you listen to an Infinite song. Sunggkyu himself is a powerhouse of vocals and you’ve got Sungjong’s dainty lil voice that blends to perfectly it’s just perfect. Infinite is the best or one of the best and most talented groups vocal wise. Like, I can’t think rn of any other groups as a whole but Taeyang and Daesung and Sunyoul also have incredible vocal talents that you can hear the emotions in their voices.

Sure there’s plenty of male idols that had great vocals but really no one can sing like Infinite can. And as far as female groups Girls Generation is def one of my tops as far as vocals I mean Miss Queen Taeyeon over here. And maybe it’s just because I feel like the first and second and third?? (because I don’t know exact generations) can do it better than any of the groups nowadays. I’m not saying the idols of today can’t or don’t know how to sing or they can’t hit high notes or blend their voices together but it’s just not the same as the older groups. Those groups just have it. Maybe some people don’t understand, maybe I’m the only one that feels this way but it’s just not the same with these new groups. Also Shinee. Like specifically Taemin and Jonghyun amazing vocals. I really adore Taemin. I think I just have like favoritism towards older groups because those are the groups I got into first and they will always be special to me so I will always say they are better than the newer idols. Also also Infinite’s mvs and the sounds of Infinite you can really tell like..like when the song came out?? Like MBLAQ and Infinite has those iconic 2010 boxed set aesthetic with the black and grey backdrops and the strong lighting and you can really tell when listening to Infinte and MBLAQ how old the songs are. Idk there’s just something I truly love about the 2010 dark/edgy boxy set it’s just. Ugh like Shinee has songs that perfectly describe that aesthetic and U-Kiss and MBLAQ and Infinite too and I just love it ugh the nostalgia :,)

Anyweee Infinite had the best vocals as an entire group imo please hold your fire.

Hey, so here's my lil' mini review of Key's first mini album Bad Love after listening to the whole thing twice:

Bad Love: I love the synthwave beat in this!! The prechorus, the chorus, and the Oh-oh-oh-oh's at the end are my fav parts too. For some reason, the actual verses didn't grab me as much though but during the 2nd listen, I was like Okayyy~ Like the 2nd listen made me appreciate this song so much more.

Yellow Tape: Loved this one right away! Also, random but I listened to this while I was outside so the sirens at the beginning made me think that an ambulance was actually coming down the street lol. "Breathe in, breathe out" is def gonna be stuck in my head now too lol. And with that lil' hook, the ambulance, and the car crashing sound at the end, I def wanna see the lyrics for this song in particular.

Hate that...: Listened to this one when it first came out and I still love it ^^. Key's and Taeyeon's voices blend very well together and I just really dig the overall chill vibe of the song.

Helium: The falsettos! The beat!! Instantly, I imagined Jonghyun singing this, like just imagine if there was a duet of their voices for a song like this TvT. Anyways, love this one a lot! Top top fav right away!

Saturday Night: Dunno why but with this song, I feel like the beat's almost... lacking something? Like it's missing that punch (drunk, love lol) for me but it's still a decent song, and I did vibe a bit more with the last chorus at least. (Also who's Zachary and Stacey? Lmao. Were those names there just to fit the flow of the song?)

Eighteen (End Of My World): Once the chorus hit, I started vibing with this one. And I definitely want to read the lyrics for this one as well. Immediately, this made me think of his other song This Life that's also an album-ender. Anyways, it's a nice song especially towards the end when it gets more chant-like. And it's the perfect song to end this mini album imo.

Honestly, it was so hard to choose my top top favs between Yellow Tape, Hate that..., and Helium but after listening to the album twice, I've come to a decision lol.

My favs in order: Yellow Tape, Helium, Hate that..., Bad Love, Eighteen (End Of My World), Saturday Night.

TL;DR: All in all, it's a pretty good first mini album from him. Though I don't think every song's a bop this time and would probably just skip the last two, he still did very well and I really dug his vocals on the first 4 songs. And I'd still def recommend giving this mini-album a listen!

Ok so I did this last year and I really enjoyed doing it and looking back this year at all the songs I listened to in the past! So here goes :)

As always, I love my boy groups/male singers so just a little disclaimer because this list will definitely show that trend! 

50. EXO - DIAMOND 

This is such an interesting song and the chorus really caught me off guard (in a good way) deffo one of my faves from the boys’ new album.

49. RED VELVET - RED FLAVOR

This song really surprised me! I'm not someone who enjoys ‘cute’ songs and when I first heard this I didn't like it but my god it is so catchy!! I found myself humming along to it aaaalll the time. Therefore I had to add it to this list. 

48. BRAVE GIRLS - ROLLIN

I love brave girls, they are so sexy yet so fresh at the same time! I loved this song straightaway and the dance with the stools is so different but it is just great!

47. SEVENTEEN (PERFORMANCE UNIT) - LILILI YABBAY

I liiiive for the performance unit! (Dino is my bias sooo ;) ) The bridge of this song is brilliant, the higher pitch of it is such a contrast to the rest of the song, I just can’t get enough of it!!!

46. VICTON - EYEZ EYEZ

Although it still had an element of cuteness, this darker concept was so unexpected of the Victon boys! It really suited them!

45. HENRY - I’ M GOOD

This is such a chill summer vibe song!! Added to my driving playlist straightaway!

44. JONGHYUN (FEAT TAEYEON) - LONELY

What a beautifully talented and kind man, may he now rest in peace. This song was breath taking and his vocals as well as taeyeon’s are truly magical and I hope this song gets even more recognition!

43. NCT 127 - GOOD THING

What a tune!!!! I'm surprised this song is only number 43 because I had this on repeat all day when the album was released! You just can’t help but move to it!

42. MYTEEN - AMAZING

I think this song is a bit of a love/hate song - I love it! Myteen are a rookie boy group and this is their debut song and I have heard a lot of negative comments about it but the bridge and the chorus are so flipping catchy, you’ll deffo be singing it after hearing it!

41. G-DRAGON - UNTITLED 2014

Woah I did not expect this from G-Dragon! I’ll be honest, personally I'm not a massive fan of g-dragon’s rapping style but his voice!!?? damn it gave me chills! This is a super beautiful song.

40. TAEYANG - WAKE ME UP 

I love love love taeyang’s voice and paired with this song.... just wow. I think it was produced really well, how the first verse was very stripped back but then at the chorus the clap of the beat came in. It just really made his voice stand out 

39. IN2IT - AMAZING

Such a summer song with a very addictive tune “u-who who u- who who” ahhh so cute I love it 

38. SUNMI - GASHINA

Yaaasss slay girl! such an empowering song and I love the mix between cute and fierce 

37. HALO - HERE I AM

Halo are super underrated! I can’t understand why though because this song is super catchy! Please check them out, you won't regret it!

36. WANNA ONE - BURN IT UP 

This song is freaking amazing! especially Woojin’s breakdown at the end of the song! His voice is so deep I love it 

35. CLC - HOBGOBLIN

This concept was brilliant!! I couldn’t believe it was CLC but those girls pulled it off so well! what a great comeback

Another really underrated boy group! This is such an upbeat and happy song! super duper catchy!!!

33. JBJ - FANTASY

I love this song so much! I really wanted to put it higher but there was just too many good songs last year! The first line just grabs you “you’re not a daydreamer” looooove!!

32. SEVENTEEN (VOCAL UNIT) - HABIT

Pure talent! solo, each boy is amazing but when they sing together for the chorus.... woah just gives me shivers!

31. UNIT BLACK - STEAL YOUR HEART

I never follow these sort of survival shows however listening to this song I became hooked, especially on Park Doha ....but where did he go? like most of the members of unit black went into In2it but not Doha?? anyway this song aaaahhh its great!!! needs way more recognition

30. THE ROSE - SORRY

woah. This band has become my new favourite (sorry cnblue I still love you) As a debut song, Sorry was amazing! their talent is no joke

29. STRAY KIDS - HELLEVATOR

2017 was clearly the year for boy groups! so many debuted and 80% of them I swear made it to my top 50 its just amazing! I love becoming obsessed with new groups! this song blew up when it came out, everyone was just so shocked that the boys produced the song and choreo themselves! 

28. B.A.P. - WAKE ME UP

I love when B.A.P do this darker concept, I think it really suits them! The message it portrays is really important and this with the great song made it a great comeback for the boys.

27. UP10TION - GOING CRAZY

Now i’ll be honest Up10tion songs can be hit or miss with me so when they came back with this song I was sceptical but my god I LOVE it soooo much! the contrast between the high voices of the singers and the deep voices of the rappers is really great

26. MICRODOT (FEAT. SANCHEZ) - NEW DAY

I only discovered microdot recently whilst on Spotify and I instantly downloaded his whole album! it was really difficult not to put like every song on here! This one I love because I really like when songs have a softer chorus but then rap verses. 

25. HOTSHOT - JELLY

Hotshot ma boyyyysss! I cant explain just how long I waited for this comeback! and they did not disappoint! It was a shame Sungwoon wasn't involved but he is doing great in wanna one so congrats to him :)

24. MICRODOT (FEAT DONELL LEWIS) - YOU NEED LOVE

I only put in two songs from the album so I think I did well! I don’t know if this is cheating though because this song is in English but I just had to add it!! it brings such a cool vibe

Honestly it took me a while to get into this song.... but the more I heard it the more the tune got stuck in my head! I love the beat and the performance is soo great

I love Block B’s vibes! They never go suit and follow other groups concepts and I think that's great! this song is a prime example, its just so different and distinguishable. I can’t help but dance alone to it

What a brilliant song!! correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they had a win with this song? .... whaaaaat?!? I don’t understand! they need more recognition

My favourite sf9 song!!! I love it when the rappers come in each time, the beat just changes! waaaa its just great

Deffo my fave kard song by farrrrr! J.Seph shook the world when he started singing! my boy DID THAT!! such a feel good summer song! 

18. BTS -DNA

yes, I know what you’re thinking “has an Army really just put BTS’s comeback song 18th on her list” but trust me guys I tried really hard to do this list objectively and not just put BTS’s whole album right at the top. Don't get me wrong though DNA was AMAZING I remember hearing it for the first time and I ran around my uni flat screaming and getting everyone to come listen to this BOP. They smash it every time.

[2/2] just wanted to add a disclaimer about my recent ask about jonghyun. I still love shinee even after hes gone. They did a rlly good job on Story of Light. I do catch myself thinking how jjong would sound rlly good in some parts of the songs but they did so well regardless. I’ve seen shawols fight about bringing him up on YouTube saying that other shawols are associating sadness w/ shinee now. Not trying to be negative or anything I can’t help how I feel 😞

And yes I 100% agree with you. Shinee is strong and carrying on well in their music without him. I'm truly happy about it because I dont feel Jonghyun would want shinee to come to an end because he's gone. For a split second I really thought Shinee was over back then when his death was still fresh those first 3 months. But they were allowed to grieve respectfully then came together in a beautiful way.

I think we have to stop excluding Johnghyun and associating Jong with sadness. He was a family member to shinee. They loved him and would probably think of him often when recording. We can't ignore even the fact that no offense but Jong was the strongest voice aside from Key and Onew. Losing the best voice will have an impact in the music.

Shinee music is still great. It's missing that powerhouse highlight in its tone that added that extra color. Key seems to have stepped up as well Onew staying steady.

I hate to say this

Nut it's like if Chao never left AOA and passed away or if Taeyeon from SNSD passed away when they were still active. That's a huge blow to the vocal line up and path of the music.

I think Jonghyun should be celebrated still and positivity should be added when mentioning him. But it's okay to express grief. Some memories don't go away with time. He's a permanent part of Shinee and shouldn't be ignored. I miss him but think he would be overjoyed with their direction. Thats what mattered most.

Plus with all respect...Jonghyun treated music as his life despite wanting to be a poet as his true dream. He really cared on and off stage. So I know he would be pleased to see them carry on and not disband.

Jinki gapes at the stranger and Jonghyun huffs and stands a little straighter. Then the words really register and Jinki bursts out in laughter, only causing Jonghyun to look even more hurt.

“You’re the worst best friend ever!” Jonghyun says and Jinki promises to buy him another Strawberry Daiquiri. Jonghyun sulks until Jinki promises to buy him one more.

The stranger has gone and Jinki can’t find him in the darkness of the club. The pick-up line (Jinki assumes it’s a pick-up line anyway) stays with him throughout the night as they get drunk.

Jonghyun is drunk before Jinki but that’s nothing new and Jinki watches him on the dance floor, disappearing in between taller people only to show himself again.

When they leave the club, they’re both drunk. Jinki is giggling in the night. He thinks he heard the lyrics as ‘farts farts farts’ before they left and for some reason, that’s hilarious to him and he can’t stop repeating it. Jonghyun is getting tired, slowly sobering up in the night air and he’s going to have a hangover before they arrive home. Jinki is blissfully unaware of Jonghyun’s misery, however, and he continues his giggling as he staggers home with Jonghyun at his side.

It’s 12 PM when Jinki wakes up the next morning. He’s tired and fatigued but doesn’t have a headache. He doesn’t feel nauseous either. That’s something he can’t say about Jonghyun, though.

“Shut up,” Jonghyun says as he cradles his head in his hands. Jinki just pats his hair a little in sympathy before he goes to find a glass of water for both of them. They spend the afternoon eating fast food and pitying themselves but it’s the best cure for a hangover.

“Meet my girlfriend!” Jonghyun says and looks fondly at a tall woman by his side. She smiles a little and bows politely to say hello to Jinki. Jinki just lifts his hand in a wave from where he’s sitting on the couch. Jonghyun frowns but both the girl and Jinki ignore him.

“You must be Minjung?” Jinki asks and the girl nods. Her dark hair falls into her eyes and she fumbles a little with the short bob-cut before she gives up. Jonghyun gently removes the hair and fixes it behind her ears.

“Yeah and I’m guessing you’re the worst best friend, Jinki?”

Jinki snorts and almost chokes on the sip of coke he has just taken.

“Fuck you Jonghyun,” he says when he’s done coughing. Jonghyun just smirks a little.

Jinki doesn’t know a lot of people when he steps inside Jonghyun and Minjung’s new shared home. Most of them, he guesses, are Minjung’s friends. Jonghyun doesn’t have a large social circle but it has never been a problem for him. Jinki is handed a beer and he introduces himself to a few of the people there. Jonghyun’s sister is there as well so Jinki clings to her. At least she’s a known face.

“Were do you hide your wings?” an unknown voice suddenly asks behind him, so close to his ear that Jinki can feel the hot breath on his skin. But when he turns around, all he sees is a back dressed in a black shirt disappearing into a group of people. Sodam laughs beside him.

“What a cheesy pick-up line,” she says and drinks from her beer. Jinki shrugs a little.

“Guess he wasn’t too curious since he didn’t stay around to get an answer.”

He forgets the stranger as the evening goes on and he gets more to drink.

Jinki cracks his neck and walks down the hallway. He’s on his way to class, bag slung over his shoulder when he bumps into another man. The other man is taller than Jinki, slightly so. He has black hair that looks fluffy and feline eyes with an intensity Jinki has never seen before. His face is sharp yet soft and his cheeks show dimples as he smiles. His style is impeccable and Jinki feels like less as he stands in front of him.

“Are you okay?” the stranger asks and Jinki feels like his legs are unstable beneath him. He stammers his yes and avoids looking at the other man now that he is done drinking in his looks. The stranger is gorgeous, possibly the most handsome man Jinki has ever seen. He beats Jonghyun by a thousand miles and most people acknowledge that Jonghyun is very good-looking. This guy is definitely other-worldly. He has to be.

“Good. Are you going that way?”

The stranger points down the hallway, towards the science classes and Jinki nods a little.

“Yes, I’m�� I am…”

Jinki scolds himself internally for stumbling over his words again. This is stupid. He should be better than that but then the stranger smiles and Jinki feels like melting in a puddle on the floor again.

“Oh. Nice! Enjoy your classes then.”

With those words the stranger steps around Jinki and takes a few steps away in the opposite direction of where Jinki has to go. Jinki turns around on his spot and looks at the stranger’s back disappearing down the hallway.

“I’m Jinki!” he says after him and then regrets. Stupid Jinki, stupid. The stranger turns around and sends him a smile that has Jinki’s heart beating faster than it should, however.

“Hello Jinki.”

Then he disappears around a corner and Jinki has to fight against sinking to the floor.

Minjung laughs.

“You crush on people easier than Jonghyun!” she says and Jonghyun frowns and crosses his arms over his chest offended. Minjung pulls at his hand until he releases it and she can link their fingers. She doesn’t take back her words, though. Jinki sighs a little and leans over the table in defeat.

“I knoooow.” 

Jinki wasn’t supposed to crush on a stranger bumping into him. Jinki has been single for years, to the point of everyone believing he was asexual because of his lack of romantic relationships. Even Jinki had started thinking he was asexual. 

Well, that is until he met the stranger in the hallway because now he knows he is definitely not asexual. He wants to see the stranger again, he wants to meet him again. 

Another girl joins them at their table and steals Minjung’s apple. Minjung steals Jonghyun’s banana instead of taking the apple back from her best friend.

“What’s with him?” Taeyeon asks and nods towards Jinki. Jinki just groans.

“He’s in love,” Jonghyun says and Jinki sits up straight in his seat.

“Oooooh,” Taeyeon says and smiles. “So you’re not ace, huh?”

Jinki just frowns at her and steals the apple from her.

“You must be the reason for global warming because you’re hot,” a stranger says and Jinki turns around to stand face to face with the man.

“Actually it’s primarily because of too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,” he says.

When he recognises the man and the words he has just spewed in his tipsy state, he blushes tomato-red and wants to hide. In front of him stands the other-worldly stranger that he bumped into two weeks ago. Except right now they’re at a party, they’re probably both drunk and Jinki just answered his pick-up line with science. Jinki hasn’t been this embarrassed since he went to kindergarten.

The stranger widens his eyes and then starts laughing.

“I didn’t think you would respond,” he says when he finishes laughing. Jinki wants to sink into the floorboards and disappear. “My name’s Kibum.”

Jinki takes a deep breath and tries not to think about what he looks like.

“Jinki,” he says and hopes he does well. Kibum sends him another smile that has his knees weak.

“I know.”

The grass is wet with dew but the night sky is clear and the stars are calming him. Jinki has found plenty of constellations but he still hasn’t found his favourite and he can’t go inside before he finds it. He doesn’t notice the person laying down beside him in the summer evening until the other person moves closer and they’re suddenly touching.

Jinki turns his head and stares into the most beautiful brown eyes. He hadn’t notice how beautiful Kibum’s eyes are before now. Now they’re transfixing him, making it impossible to look away.

“Your lips look so lonely…Would they like to meet mine?” Kibum asks in a whisper and Jinki smiles a little.

“Fuck yes,” he answers before he presses his lips to Kibum’s. Jinki is way too drunk.

“You know I saw you and Jonghyun in the nightclub 6 months ago,” Kibum says. Jinki raises an eyebrow and continues playing with Kibum’s fingers on his stomach. “I thought you were together and Jonghyun really is below you.”

Jinki blinks a little.

“Wait, did you tell me I dropped my standards then? Was it because of Jonghyun?”

The pink blush on Kibum’s cheeks gives him away. Jinki laughs.

“It was also me that asked about your wings at Jonghyun and Minjung’s housewarming,” Kibum says in a shy voice. Jinki lets go of Kibum’s hand and turns around in his embrace so he can look directly at Kibum.

“You never stayed around to get my answer,” he says and Kibum shrugs a little.

“I was shy. My friends told me that it would definitely work with that pick-up line but oh my god, it sounded horrible when I said it out loud.”

Jinki chuckles.

“So for how long did you think I was hot?”

Kibum scoffs.

“That will stay my secret. I’m glad your personality is just as perfect as your appearance, though.”

They lie in silence, just looking at each other. Jinki loves Kibum. He’s confident and cheeky. He’s shy and embarrassed. He’s a walking contradiction but he’s perfect in every possible way. Everything he does is beautiful because it is exactly what makes him Kibum.

“You know, my lips won’t just kiss themselves…” Kibum says after a few minutes of silence and Jinki shakes his head fondly before he closes the distance between them and lets his lips meet Kibum’s.

Love is so nice: while this has always been one of my less favourite songs it still sounds amazing and has everything i would expect and love in a Jjong song, 10/10 it's just not my style

눈싸움 (Blinking game): for some reason i was expecting this to be a fast song?? idk why??? but holy shit i love this

If I were you - I’m not much of a 2ne1 song so i don’t really know much about them, but I really like the raw and rough side of some of the vocals, and the tempo and flow of the song is really nice and it gives a bit of a retroey vibe (i’m inventing words now). I really like it though!

Goodbye - This song is one i listen to when i’m depressed hahaha. It’s really good though, and the emotion in the song is undeniable, 10/10
