My experience with The Practical Guide to being a Great GM

The book by Guy Sclanders, known from How to be a Great GM, receives mixed reviews.

My favorite four tools for running a game:

Yes, And: most people are familiar with this. You accept what the player is doing and add to it. "I go to open the door." "You open the door and a large friendly dog jumps out, pinning you to the ground."

No, But: a lot of people know this one, too. You aren't letting the player Do The Thing, BUT something else happens! "I try to stab the shop keep." "The shop keep dodges your attack, but trips and falls to the floor, dropping the key he was palming."

Yes, But: much less used but fun! The player's choice works, technically, but there's Unexpected Consequences! "I go to smash the box." "Your mace falls squarely on the chest but it deforms, absorbing the blow and revealing a massive row of teeth!"

No, And: use with caution, for moments when the Fuck Around has occurred, and now it's Find Out's initiative. "I'm going to try and seduce the guard." "Unbeknownst to you, the guards are all eunuchs under a vow of celebacy and he takes significant affront at your presumption."

I don't use these for everything, but they're great tools for when an action needs a bit of back-and-forth.

I had a dream that the new Tumblr Discourse ™️ was over a new DND style game where all of the races were types of snakes. People were ragging on anyone who chose to be a paladin corn snake (because obviously corn snakes would never be a paladin.) I'm not entirely convinced it's not already a thing because Tumblr is just Like That, but anyway it was called Cobra King and I want to play it now.

I helped develop a fan made, unlicensed, Animorphs table top role playing game. It's in its beta test version and comments and reviews are welcome!

Happy 2025. I haven't posted much digital art this year, since I have been working in a lot of physical media for larger projects.

In 2024 I started practicing how to make tabletop miniatures out of paper. And I began work on a Gundam/Armored Core inspired table top game where you pilot mechas and work to fight various sci-fi enemies as a team.

I think I got pretty good at it too. Everything in the photos is made out of cardstock and super glue. (And a few paper clips and painted tin foil.)

I also have a collections of close ups I took of the little environmental details that I'll link to once I post them.

It's been a lot of fun and a lot of failure but I really enjoyed working on it.

I got the chance to work with Choopo on his Wizard101 Lore series and I'm extremely appreciative that I got the chance to help him on his quest.

It was a lot and I'm not done documenting yet, there's plenty of Arc 5 speculation going on and I'm interested to see where this EarthBorn plot point from the end of Selenopolis will take the Wizard next.

I'm also working on an overall for Mage The Ascension (from the line of World Of Darkness TTRPGs) that will allow you to play as a wizard from any angle or side of the Spiral, I'll make sure to post updates here.

(This currently infant pet-project will absolutely/most-definitely be free because I have no idea what kind of legalization surrounds both KingsIsle and WOD these days but it would still be fun to get the chance to play as a Wizard of the Spiral and even more so to shape a system to allow you to do exactly that)
