thinking about filipinos in the fallout wasteland again... of course the cuisine (served in wasteland karinderias) will endure, along with eskrima for those who are martially inclined, but also saying "tabi tabi po" when passing by dilapidated buildings or dirt mounds so as not to disturb the spirits there, going "pssht!!!" at someone to get their attention without having to yell, pointing with our lips, saying "tao po" when knocking on someone's door to indicate that you are in fact a person and not a feral ghoul or super mutant, pagmamano for the elders to show respect because to grow old in the wasteland is something to revere, pwera usog to ward off curses for babies and children who are very vulnerable... multi-generational, maximalist homes filled with people and ornaments that were either homemade or scavenged! filipino towns with fiestas every other month! wasteland karaoke and pageants and talent contests and sipa tournaments and basketball games and other forms of entertainment for the community! inuman every week!!!!

Okay, so I’ve talked about it before on here, but I’m going to talk about it again now that I’m more than halfway through Earthspark. I am absolutely shocked and touched by the amount of Filipino representation there is in this show. Growing up as a person with multiple ethnic identities, I grew up mostly in my Filipino heritage compared to the six others. I don’t speak much Tagalog, mostly because my family speaks predominantly Ilonggo/Hiligaynon, but the moment Alex said “Lolo” I was completely shocked, because I’ve never heard someone in a TV show speak my language before. I have never had Filipino representation onscreen growing up, so Earthspark is actually the very first show where I get that. Episode six literally almost brought me to tears because I vividly remember my mom telling stories about Filipino folklore like the Wak-Wak or Mangkukulam and Engkanto. The usage of the phrase “Tabi Tabi Po” became almost a mantra for me when I would wander the woods or explore more rural areas where I grew up. This episode was a love letter to the Philippines, and those who struggle with finding their identity and taking refuge in the family history that is passed onto them from one generation to the next. To see my folklore, language, and represented so naturally in this show is absolutely moving, and a further example of why representation in media is so important.

→ Living in a small inner-city area, everybody knows everybody. But there's one particular boy that everybody surely knows—the boy who's constantly hogging the court, he basically owns it now. By perchance, you get to see this notorious "court monster" play up-close, after moments of watching him from afar, only to realize that he isn't really the kind of boy that you, and everybody, thought he was.

Humigpit ang kapit ko sa manibela ng bike nang maaninag ko ang paliko. Dadaanan ko na kasi ang Public Park ng village namin. Mayroon ditong playground sa tabi ng malawak na open-air basketball court. Sa loob ng court,may isang pamilyar na tanawin na hindi na bago sa'ming lahat

Wala namang ibang tao dito na nag-babasketball sa tanghaling tapat tapos kung makapag-laro pa parang magtatapos ang mundo 'pag 'di niya nai-shoot ang bola. Pero kahit mukhang feeling niya lang kina-astig niya 'yon, aaminin ko, kina-astig niya talaga 'yon.

Dahil sa pinag-gagawa niyang pag-babasketball araw-araw, walang tao dito na hindi siya kilala. Halos do'n na nga siya sa court nakatira eh. Kinakatakutan rin siya ng mga kalaban ng team nila sa liga. Pagkakita na pagkakita palang sa kanya, ang dami nang dahilan para hindi makapaglaro sa liga.

Bukod sa basketball, isa din kung bakit siya iniiwasan ng mga ka-edad niya sa liga. Hindi lang labanan ng bola 'to, pati puso ng bayan, pinag-aagawan kung sino unang makakaakit. Eh ano bang laban nila diyan, eh crush ng bayan 'yan eh! Matangkad, chinito, ta's pagdating sa laro, kung gaano siya kabilis mag-isip gano'n din siya kabilis gumalaw.

Pinapanood ko palang ngayon, para akong nanonood ng model na na-taunang magaling din pala humawak ng bola. Lahat ng tira niya malinis, walang pinapatawad. Pero pa'no kung nakita nga niya ako, edi ako na ang naging weirdo? ako na ang naging patay na patay? Hayst! Pero 'di naman niya ako nakita, 'di naman namamansin 'yon eh. Saka sa malayo ko lang naman siya tinignan.

Pagkapasok ni Kuya Jaehyun at Leehan sa court panay ang iling at tawa nila.

"Ano kaya 'yon?" Mapang-asar na sambit ni kuya Jaehyun na sinasapawan ng "nyare boi" ni Leehan.

"Seryoso, wala nga akong nakita!" Pagprotesta ko.

"Nando'n lang siya nakatayo oh," turo ni Jaehyun sa malapit na poste sa may paliko.

"Ano 'yon?" tanong ni Leehan, na naglalakad papunta do'n sa puwesto na 'yon. May pinulot siya na something na hindi ko maaninag kaya nilapitan ko siya.

"Ano 'yan 'ya?" Tanong ko. Pinakita niya sa'min ito nang naka-nguso. Isa itong airpod na nag-iisa. Sa itsura no'ng lugar, mukhang isang airpod lang, walang kasama.

"Pa'no niya 'yan hindi napansin?" sambit ko habang natatawa. Grabe naman ang pagkamanhid no'n kung 'di niya talaga napansin.

"Hindi mo nga naapansin na may nanonood na sayo, makapagsalita ka diyan." Halos mapa-talon ako nang bumulong si kuya Taesan sa tenga ko.

"Sa'n ka galing?" inis na tanong ko. Kung 'di ko lang kinu-kuya 'to tinadyakan ko na 'to.

"So, anong plano..." mahinang banggit ni Leehan habang sumesenyas sa airpod.

"Siraulo, anong tingin mo sa'ken?" sabi ko bago kunin ang airpod sa kamay ni kuya Leehan.
