What were the inspirations and process behind it?

my process is also very straightforward!:

1. sketch

2. clean up/lineart (optional! I really only do it on animations/commissions)

3. color

4. shade (optional!)

5. adjustments and other things afterwards!! (fixing lineart/ofther things)

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

It’s probably pretty obvious that I Love Writing Shinsou, but I think he may also be the character I’m most comfortable writing at this point? That’s actually why he has a tendency to sneak into fics featuring characters or genres I’m unsure about; he was my rock when I was writing ‘there’s no good tricks but old ones’ as well as the second, angstier part of the Star Wars au (which I am chewing on again when I have the brain space for it :D)

So there are a lot of things I love to do when writing him!! One favorite is probably making him outwardly polite—particularly to his teachers and older UA peers—but inwardly a little sassy, or sometimes just kind of goofy. Basically I really like writing his narration, as well as the occasions when another POV character is aware enough to kind of know what’s going on in his head that he isn’t saying it loud.

Something I dislike is that I feel I have a tendency to make him kinda?? too anxious?? Idk I feel like my own anxiety sometimes comes through too much in his POV, and I spend a lot of my editing time with Shinsou telling him to calm down lol. I actually have two (2) (!!) finished Shinsou fics I haven’t posted yet because they’re just several thousand words of anxiety spiral I don’t know how to fix 😭

13. When do they fake a smile? How often?

Valen's learned to fake smiles in situations where he really wants to be an asshole, but has to remain a professional. His work as a private operator with Ares Systems means that he deals with clients often and they sometimes can grate on his nerves. They aren't always easy to work with, but Valen is paid well to be a professional, so a professional he'll be. A client says something supremely rude and Valen puts on this small, fake smile that doesn't reach his eyes and politely tells them "Unfortunately, if you want the ability to tell us how to do our job, that's an extra fee on top of the hefty sum you've already paid. So, why don't you let us take care of what you've hired us for while you go sit back and relax." He may be smiling, but you both hear and feel that it would take very little for him to leave you high and dry or crumpled there with a broken nose.

21. What common etiquette do they disagree with? Do they still follow it?

Valen actually doesn't really disagree with many etiquette rules. He was raised in a gang that was more akin to the mafia than anything else and he learned a lot of very specific etiquette that not everyone else learns, such as where to stand near authority figures (it's similar to the way an attack dog heels beside their owner. Valen still does that to this day with people he loves).

His dad, Callen, taught Valen how to be very polite and respectful to the people around him. That was one of the very few good things he did for Valen. But the question is; was it etiquette that Callen taught Valen, or was it submission? That being said, Valen actually learned great etiquette for the general public and still follows mostly everything he learned.

Callen taught him to be respectful to everyone, from the president of the gang to the random guy making his drink at the coffee shop. Callen said that Valen needed to embody the professionalism of the gang everywhere he went. And young, impressionable, eager to please Valen, did.

52. Do they act on their immediate emotions, or do they wait for the facts before acting?

It depends on the situation, but Valen is very good at controlling his emotions and can restrain himself from being too impulsive. He had to learn very good emotional control since being explosively angry around other people who were also explosively angry would've led to some very bad results. Not only that, but Valen decided around the age of 20 that he wasn't going to be like his father; Callen had a terrible temper and very little emotional control. Valen felt the sting from those emotional outbursts often and he swore that he wouldn't be the same. So he forced himself to learn how to control his emotions, so whomever he was close to wouldn't need to feel the same as he did.

There are so many tho, many I've deleted, so I'll just throw out some that I just happen to have on hand.

The Sims 3 will always be my absolute favorite game to both play and edit, esp since it's the game that actually got me into editing to begin with!

The game's world, and characters are as stunning as they are heavily customizable, and thanks to it's devoted modding community, its truly been my ideal escapist playground through even my toughest times, and has continually brought me joy since it's inception.

Truly cannot thank this game enough for being both fun, and helping me find a perfect outlet for my creativity.

This picture still gets me, bc I remember finding out you could add the x-wing to any lot, and still use it, and I immediately took it into S4S and recolored it just for my sim.

Such a stunning sight seeing it take off through the treetop canopies of Selvadorada.

Cyberpunk 2077 to me is one of the most stunning, detailed, high fidelity games I've ever laid my eyes on.

Every corner of its world, Night City, is photogenic, and the character models, even the NPC's are some of the most impressive works of 3d art I've seen in some time. It's an absolute challenge staying out of photomode in this one, and with the astronomical level of customization the modding community has committed to adding to it, it's easy to see why it's become quite the popular blorbo maker.

I edit other games as well, although I'll typically do GIFs lately, but with how absolutely stunning games are these days, sometimes I still can't resist capturing a well lit cutscene, and throwing it into Photoshop.

i think kendall was always a very good student because he had to be for logan, i don't think that's a controversial take. i think teachers never really liked him because he monopolized class discussions, was not above name-dropping his daddy to the administration, and just generally had a sweaty-forehead vibe of desperation and effort that was sad and unpleasant to look upon

incurably mediocre student, below average in math and science. i've played with the idea that he had teachers who were charmed by him and his class clown antics, but i think there were other teachers who had like a sadistic hatred of him (and not jsut in middle school) in that way adults sometimes do to children and convinces children there must be something deeply wrong with them. i also think there were books that roman skimmed in school that actually left a pretty profound impact on him (or at least the way the teacher talked about them did) like he would never admit it but Austen does something for him...

definitely effortlessly a better student than ken. like picks things up faster, probably did really well on the debate team (which begs the question what format of debate did she do all my former speech and debate kids sound off), never visibly struggled in any subject. i dont know if we ever learn what college she went to? like in the prop auction was there a diploma for her? im team shiv4yale to contrast with ken going to harvard, but i could also see her going to brown because that school is probably the world's capital of pretending not to be rich for clout.

im going to do these all in one clump because i have similar thoughts about all of them--

all three of them have had breakdown/sudden self-reinvention haircuts (romans bad fash haircut, shivvy's amy dunne bob, ken's monastic buzz) which is sooo--

i think there's a certain asceticism (dare i say eating disorder-coded?) that goes along with haircuts for all three of them-- like cut away the excess, start fresh, be sleeker, be different, be unburdened, be made new. i think shiv in particular would get a haircut as a replacement for some other emotional outburst (ed-related or not) that she would feel is embarrassing. i could see roman wanting short hair for the same reason he likes tight clothes- there's like an agony/ecstasy to being so bare, where you feel clean and defined, but also painfully exposed and naked.

thank you for clarifying you're a different anon and this one i'll respond to with care, and thank you for sending this because it is a genuine critique. I drew that header after finding a western/cowboy artist that I liked, and I wanted to draw something t4t centered. After finding the artist again (linked above), yes he is not indigenous, but in the article he describes his work with the Wampanoag community in MA. But you're right; there is a fine line between depicting western/cowboy culture that doesn't negate the colonization/manifest destiny of its time. I believed I made the image more "contemporary" (both have punk/lgbtq patches in the full image), but if that's not clear because the man on the left's patches are cut off from the header, then that's on me.

as for the white dude, I wasn't clear on either of their races, but both of the men in the photo are drawn from the indigenous people in my life. When i think of dark haired dark skins indigenous folks, I think of my long time best friend who is Nahuatl and detribalized, and for the "white man", I based him off myself and other detribalized/mixed folks who are paler and look "less native". Obviously none of this is clear because the image is just there, but these were the thoughts that went into that drawing. It was all based on the Mexican culture around me in terms of vaquero, because I associate the masculinity that I am comforted by with vaquero culture.

as for the tattoo, I made it up on the spot. but you're right, it does look similar to indigenous communities' like the maori or polynesian/samoa. I'll be more careful about that and I have not drawn any tribal like tattoos on anyone else since that drawing (the drawing is from 2019).

and you're right about your last point. I have been thinking of changing the header, but it has also been there for several years so I don't know what to change it to and I have had many folks in my inbox say they were comforted/affirmed by the header. at the same time, I don't want to drive off any folks who don't know im detribalized and may think i'm just randomly drawing indigenous people because I am like, fascinated with them.

i'll be more careful from now on, but thank you for sending this and feel free to lmk anything else, or if any indigenous folks want to add any other points feel free to do that in the notes!

Tbh, I love the way your fics are already set up. The only thing I can think of adding would be a word count? The only reason I look at word counts on fics is so I have an idea of how long it might take to read.
