"please, dinner was going to be made anyways. lucky that jaxon pulled out his verision of puppy eyes for the tacos. i was just planning burgers and pizza."
"i'm not the only one who seems to enjoy it so i think it's a win." jaxon plops down on the table with his own plate, gesturing towards stiles and alaric who are chowing down their food. the vampire chuckles. "naya makes really good tacos. swear the woman has some secret. names jaxon, nice to meet you."
matt is only a few steps behind her, carrington in her carseat and diaper bag on his other. "she insisted she bring something even though i told her that it really wasn't necessary." matt chuckled, placing the car seat down and greeting everyone. valentina and hanna start cooing over. "are dan and eric here yet? they've slacked on uncle duty this week."
He didn't believe that for a second, on more than one occasion he could see them pull their punch right at the last second BUT stiles appreciated it cause it would've probably cost him a tooth for being dumb and leaning into it.
He lifts his hands laughing. " Hey I was just coming to say hi to the lovely lovely lady of the house! Give thanks for the delicious food. " Hes looking at it like a hungry dog. " Looks so goodddddd " he grabs whatever can fit on the plate which is a mix of everything and digs in.
Alaric laughs. " Got It I won't call you Tina but Louis is kind of chaotic so I'm watching out for YOU too. " He jokes then spots stiles eating and races over to fill his plate two. both boys eat with barely a breath in between each bite.
" Oh my god this is so good! If you don't mind after everything is done I can clean up. " Alaric tells the alpha. " it's the least I could do. "
Another car pulls up and a very pregnant Lexi jumps out holding a casserole dish in his hands. She walks right into the house and blows some hair out of her face. " hi everyone I made way too much so I hope you like lasagna cause that's what you're getting. "
Alaric dips his burger in the birrar juice and takes a huge bite and shimmies happily. " Fuck yes... "

‘Nakom’: Film Review
A medical student must decide whether to return for good to his small farm community in Ghana.
BY THR STAFF MAY 4, 2016 1:03PM
After a debut set in Cuba, Kelly Daniela Norris and T.W. Pittman travel to Africa for Nakom, the tale of a young man torn between urban ambitions and his rural roots. (Norris wrote and directed Sombras de Azul solo, with Pittman as producer; the two share writing/directing roles here.) But a changed venue results in no lack of authenticity for a picture that readily captures the specificity of its setting and of local mores; filmmaking restraint and a strong performance from star Jacob Ayanaba should win fans at fests and play well to a niche audience on video.
Making his screen debut, Ayanaba has poise to spare as Iddrisu, a Ghanaian med student who must return to his small farming village when his father dies. There, he finds family members who may well be thrown off their land if the next harvest season isn’t spectacularly good; as he’s the only one who seems to have the gumption to get crops planted and tend to them, he reluctantly takes a leave from school to fix things.
Now called “bachelor chief” by neighbors, and criticized by family members for thinking he belongs in a better place, Iddrisu has a full plate of interpersonal problems to sort out while he prays for a good crop: His father’s two wives dislike each other, large debts are owed to an uncle and his young brother isn’t good for much except knocking up a young relative who is living with them temporarily. Ayanaba doesn’t milk the put-upon good-son angle, instead emphasizing the kind of uncomplaining work ethic we know will carry Iddrisufar when he returns to school.
If he returns, that is. The local chief makes it clear he feels the village is in trouble without residents like Iddrisu; and the chief’s unmarried daughter Comfort (Felicia Atampuri) makes the prospect of staying more appealing. Though the script’s handling of the decision itself is uncomfortably abrupt, everything leading up to it benefits from a convincing, lived-in vibe.
A cast of non-actors acquits itself very nicely here, and the nature of the shoot — in which locals played key roles in the low-budget production — make the film’s polish all the more impressive. Add cinematographer Robert Geile’soccasional postcard-ready views of the horizon, and it’s easy to imagine a man with good prospects thinking twice about leaving here to make his fortune overseas.

What dead musicians you’d like to see perform live if you could?
By: Bonaventure A. Akinlosotu II
A few months ago, I asked some of my friends to send me their top 5 artist they’d like to see live in their prime, that are are already dead and gone. This conversation started with my dad and I a of couple weeks prior when he posed the question to me. Immediately, I thought of Mike Jack and Jimi Hendrix. I feel like every living being should have Mike on their list or they don’t deserve to have a music opinion. Ha! He changed a lot for music and became someone beyond what you call a MEGA STAR. In my opinion, he’s the greatest entertainer EVER.
Amongst my friends’ list, Michael was the most common person named, of course, or else I wouldn’t have respected their opinions enough to ask Lol……. but “no Lol”. Other common artists mentioned by my friends, but not on my list, were Prince, Luther Vandross, Aaliyah, Miles Davis, Tupac and Whitney Houston. So without further adieu, below are my top 5 artist that I’d like to see perform live in their prime…
1. Michael Jackson
I think this goes without saying. He’s the greatest entertainer of our lifetime. Right before his death, he was embarking on the “This Is It” tour and I for sure was gonna make that happen.
Venue: {The Rose Bowl} A California outdoor stadium that seats nearly 100K. His performances perfectly fit a stadium vibe. In this very venue, he headlined the halftime show for Super Bowl XXVII. His halftime show greatly increased the overall ratings and this changed how the NFL booked their Super Bowl halftime performances going forward.
2. Jimi Hendrix
He is the star of all stars that influenced the lives of many artists not only with his music but his style as well. He was in, arguably, the greatest Rock ‘N’ Roll band of all time, The Band of Gypsys. He headlined Woodstock, the festivals of all festivals, and showed what it meant to be a “rockstar”.
Venue: {Woodstock} Billed as “3 Days of Music & Peace,” was the largest and most popular festival of its time. It was said that 500,000+ showed up for the festivities with Jimi Hendrix closing the once in a lifetime festival.
3. Bob Marley
Honestly, Bob can be number one on my list. I can imagine the euphoric feeling of being out in the grass chillin’, and vibin’ to his music. There may not be a better musical experience out there. He made worldly and conscious music for all.
Venue: {Coachella Valley Music Festival} Another California outdoor experience with it being today’s miniature version of Woodstock. The artsy and laid back atmosphere in California would be perfect for a Marley experience 😏.
4. Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye, in my opinion, was one of the best male vocalist of his time, and not to mention created perfect love making music. If I was making a “Top 5 date’s night” list, this would surely be number 1 on the list.
Venue: {Carnegie Hall} One of the most prestigious venues in the world with the main hall seating about 3,000 people. The five levels and auditorium seating makes for a good view from every seat in the room.
5. James Brown
Before Michael Jackson, he held the title as “the greatest entertainer in show business”. Without him, it wouldn’t be a Michael Jackson, Prince, or the genre “Funk” at all. He also had the courage to front the black struggle in America in the 60s. His electric shows blurred the color lines in the Civil Rights era. What do they say? “Music is the one thing that could bring all races together?” Ehhhh
Venue: {Apollo Theater} James Brown actually recorded one of the most critically acclaimed albums ever here. Live At The Apollo Ranked 25th on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums Of All Time” list as well as being inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame. With its historical significance, it was easy to choose this venue.
So that’s my top 5. Weeks after I posed this question, I thought of other ways I could’ve asked for their list to make this broader. We could’ve included artists in general who were no longer in their prime but still alive. A few that came to mind were Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Earth Wind and Fire, The Isley Brothers, and Diana Ross. Did we miss any that were on obvious choices to be in the top 5? Also, what live show have you seen that you will always remember?!?!?!

Nakom
Nakom, directed by the female team of TW Pittman and Daniela Norris, and nominated for the John Cassavetes Film Independent Spirit Award for the best new film made for under $500,000, will be released by Corinth Films. The film, starring Jacob Ayanaba, Justina Kulidu, Shetu Mussah, Grace Ayariga, Aziz Abdul, Esther Issaka, Mamudu Asigiri, and Thomas Kulidu, will open Friday March 3rd at New York’s Cinema Village in Manhattan.
Set in present day Ghana, Nakom follows Iddrisu, a talented medical student who is summoned home by his sister after their father’s sudden death. Iddrisu reluctantly returns home to the village of Nakom, buries his father and temporarily assumes the head of the impoverished household and farm, inheriting not only the delicate task of planting a successful crop but also a debt left by the deceased patriarch that could destroy the family. Attempting to maintain part of his studies from the confines of a small hut, Iddrisu becomes increasingly frustrated with the incessant physical and emotional needs of those around him, the demanding toil of the land and lack of rain. A contentious relationship with his uncle Napolean, to whom the sizeable debt is owed, is further complicated by the unplanned pregnancy of Napolean’s granddaughter who was sent to live with Iddrisu’s family.
As the new patriarch grapples with tradition and familial duty, he is met with varying shades of contempt by both family and villagers who compare him with his father expecting a resemblance. Iddrisu’s patience and wisdom are tempered by the strange paradox created by his faith in God and desire for control, the latter of which he cannot have so long as he stays in Nakom. As circumstances swell, Iddrisu suddenly begins to realize that no future for him exists in the place where he is needed the most, even despite an offer by the village Chieftain to remain in Nakom to become an elder and marry his daughter.

Grace Parra on 3 Intersectional Projects You Must Know About
(1) TW Pittman
TW’s essay “Transgender…but Seriously, to Hell with Boxes” is the most important piece of writing on transgender identification that I have encountered this year. It is all encompassing in its breadth, addressing pronoun use, the duality of gender (with some fascinating observations on how truly precocious Native American culture has been), even “the problem with pretty,” or how seeking the feminine ideal necessitates that trans women have an awareness that said feminine ideal “has been wielded for thousands of years to oppress women.”
In this era of Buzzfeed listicles, bulleted theses, and be-Gif’d rundowns, it is rare to find a beautifully crafted essay that makes clear, succinct observations with masterful prose. Even for the educated allies amongst us, it’s an imperative read. TW is a dear friend, and one whose voice is not limited to essays: she’s also a filmmaker whose film Nakom was inspired by her time in Ghana as a Peace Corps member (check out the website and Twitter for more info), and she serves as Executive Producer of Sombras.

Film Review: ‘Nakom’
A Ghanian medical student is dragged by family obligations back to his native farming village in this pleasing, polished effort.
By Dennis Harvey Feb 26, 2016 11:52am PT
A dramatic microcosm of the age-old conflict between progress and tradition, “Nakom” follows a Ghanian medical student as he’s dragged by family obligations back into the change-resistant world of his native farming village. This second feature (following 2013’s Cuba-shot “Sombras de Azul”) for U.S.-based co-directors Kelly Daniela Norris and TW Pittman doesn’t have the outside-looking-in feel of similar international co-productions; there’s an air of authenticity as well as a pleasingly laid-back yet substantive narrative engagement to this polished effort. While theatrical prospects will be limited, positive fest-circuit buzz should stir some interest from home-format buyers.
Iddrisu (Jacob Ayanaba) is enjoying life in urban Kumasi, where he’s got a girlfriend and is doing well in his studies. But out of the blue, a call from his sister Damata (Grace Ayariga) yanks him from his university in the middle of a term: Their father has died, requiring that the eldest son return to bury him and help settle his affairs. After the long bus rides northward to his family’s mud-hut homestead, Iddrisu discovers much in disarray: His mother (Justina Kulidu) won’t speak to the late patriarch’s second, “junior” wife (Shetu Musah); Damata resents the fact that there’s only enough money for Iddrisu’s studies, not her own; younger sibling Kamal (Abdul Aziz) is an irresponsible layabout.
Though they’re hardly local gentry, everyone treats relative Fatima (Esther Isaaka) as an inferior servant. Worst of all, Iddrisu soon discovers that their property might soon revert whole to Uncle Napoleon (Thomas Kulidu), from whom Dad recklessly borrowed money in the wake of a drought-compromised recent growing season. Though these squabbles test his patience, Iddrisu proves an adept negotiator and problem solver. Prevented from returning to college immediately, he stays on through the year’s harvest, tentatively turning the family’s fortunes around and putting out a few additional fires along the way.
Such natural leadership qualities do not fail to impress the local chief (James Azudago), who notes that the village “needs someone like you” to lead it into modernity, and whose attractive, intelligent, unattached daughter (Felicia Atampuri) provides additional reason to linger. But pleasant as assuming this patriarchal mantle turns out to be in many ways, staying would force Iddrisu to give up everything he’s worked for — including plans to commence practice as a doctor in America. There’s no middle ground possible between his family’s demands and his own worldly ambitions: One will have to be sacrificed to serve the other.
That’s a stark choice that (like other factors here, including the revelation of an illegitimate pregnancy) could have been handled in melodramatic terms. But the directors (and producer/co-scenarist Isaac Adakudugu, credited with involving his actual village of Nakom in many aspects of the pic’s creation) favor a naturalistic, light-footed approach that weaves all incident comfortably into a credible, eventful yet leisurely pattern of everyday life. There’s plenty of room for humor, albeit of an offhand rather than broad nature.
Key to “Nakom’s” success is Ayanaba’s gracefully assured turn, which convinces us that Iddrisu might go very far in this world — and that he’s well aware what he’ll miss out on if he stays put. The supporting turns are astutely handled, with many actors apparently recruited from the Nakom community of subsistence farmers practicing age-old customs that persist despite their increasing irrelevancy to an encroaching outside world.
Packaging is pro on all levels, with standout contributions being Robert Geile’s handsome widescreen lensing and an attractive acoustic score by rising West African musician Daby Balde.
