You know what… I’ll spoil you guys a bit…… Mad Hatter Trickster……

It IS trickery though. It's infiltration, a kind of heist. With disguise (illusion magic courtesy of Athena), performance, deception, and a WHOLE lot of social engineering, Odysseus found himself armed with deadly weapons smack dab in the middle of the unsuspecting suitors, with his armed allies strategically placed in the room, and the gates conveniently shut so that no suitor could escape and no suitor's ally could come in.

If he'd disembarked on the shore of Ithaca and walked out in the open yelling "woohoo, your king is back!", his physical strength would accomplish jackshit, as his big muscles would get unceremoniously peppered with arrows before he came anywhere near the palace.

Basically, Odysseus started a civil war without an army, by assassinating all the leaders of the enemy army in one fell swoop, and taking over the palace. That's the trickery. And this trickery (it wasn't brute force just because he happens to be buff, good grief) allowed him to control resources/the narrative, and assemble his own army that would eventually win him the throne for good. Remember, the massacre of the suitors (and for NO good reason, of the maids) isn't the end of the story, it's like at two thirds? The rest of the Odyssey is all about fighting and negotiating with the suitors' families, since a large chunk of Ithaca was against him and had to be defeated or won over.

Now, Odysseus doesn't get the credit for masterminding the whole thing. He did come up with ideas, but Athena was over his shoulder the whole time, moving him like a chess piece. And it was an inside job: it would be impossible to pull off without Penelope, Telemachus, and a bunch of loyal (for some unfathomable reason) slaves. Still, he played his part perfectly, he lied through his teeth, he acted all frail and harmless, and successfully got the suitors to hand him a loaded kalashnikov, assuming he couldn't possibly be able to use it and they'll all have some fun at his expense. And then he turned it on them. So yeah, it was trickery.

By the way, I once did a D&D 3.5 build for Odysseus, and I insist his Strength is impressive but not phenomenal (that would be Ajax and Achilles). He's INT > CHA > STR / CON > DEX > WIS. Don't compare him with the suitors, they're NPCs, they were wining and dining while my guy was getting knocked around and swimming for his life, of course he's buffer.

i do appreciate however much people want to fit odysseus into a clever trickster type framework, one of his signature tricks is being physically stronger than anyone else in his kingdom
