Song Review: The Travelin’ McCourys - “Scarlet Begonias” (Live)

What if the Travelin’ McCourys are the actual Heart of Gold Band?

They are not, of course, yet the bluegrass quintet plays “Scarlet Begonias” with such verve and authenticity that the group could conceivably be the mythical combo of which Robert Hunter wrote.

Captured on pro-shot video at the 2024 Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots Festival, the McCourys use equal parts tracing paper and aural freehand to render “Scarlet” red-hot with “Begonias” rooted firmly in odd-colored grass under yellow skies.

Ronnie McCoury sings lead in a high tenor similarly to Papa Del’s. Passed like a burning doobie, solos move from Jason Carter’s fiddle to Cody Kilby’s guitar to McCoury’s mandolin before Rob McCoury kicks it into triple-time gear on banjo. Three-part harmonies bring the thing home before the McCourys slam on the sonic brakes for the perfect end to a perfect rendition.
