Political Controversy Erupts as Police Block Visits to Sandeshkhali: Congress and BJP Delegations Stopped
The political atmosphere in West Bengal has become charged following the police’s obstruction of visits to Sandeshkhali by both Congress and BJP delegations. The BJP’s planned visit saw a diversion to the West Bengal Raj Bhavan, while Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury staged a protest where he was halted.
The actions of the police drew sharp criticism from both parties, with accusations of unconstitutional and unethical behavior directed towards West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The six-member BJP delegation, including Union Ministers Annapurna Devi and Pratima Bhowmick, was halted merely five kilometers from Sandeshkhali, at Rampur. Similarly, the Congress team, led by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, faced obstacles at Sarberia and Rampur. The parties condemned these actions in unison.
The unrest in Sandeshkhali has led to the imposition of prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144, following violent protests by local villagers. Allegations against local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh and associates include land grabbing, sexual harassment, and assault on local laborers.
Reports indicate that the BJP leaders were stopped by the police upon reaching Rampur, where they alleged mistreatment and were compelled to stage a dharna for hours. Annapurna Devi expressed dismay, highlighting the contradiction of allowing criminals freedom while impeding elected representatives from addressing citizens’ concerns.
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul emphasized their attempts to comply with regulations, only to be met with persistent obstruction. Despite this, the delegation managed to connect with women in Sandeshkhali via video call before redirecting their efforts to the Raj Bhawan in Kolkata to meet Governor C V Ananda Bose.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s protest in Rampur underscored his questioning of the legitimacy of police barricades on public roads. He dismissed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s allegations linking the BJP and RSS to instigating trouble in Sandeshkhali, condemning what he deemed divisive politics.
In contrast, TMC MP Shantanu Sen defended the police’s actions, questioning the BJP’s motives and citing their alleged lack of proactiveness in previous incidents. Sen echoed the sentiment that allowing the BJP delegation entry could destabilize the state’s atmosphere.

Criminal Sense Vs Moral Sensibility
“Nations start off on the basis of high ideals and noble values….but gradually, texture of politics changes whereby almost half the MPs in Lok Sabha have criminal charges pending against them, including charges of rape and murder,” underscored Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. A miffed New Delhi summoned the island State’s High Commissioner and conveyed its objection. Yet, how does it explain 233 of 539 (43%) of our Right Honourables have criminal cases pending against them of which 29% are serious: 10 MPs have convicted cases, 11 cases related to murder, 30 attempt to murder and 19 crimes against women. The BJP tops the ignominy list with 116 (39%) of 301 MPs, Congress 29 (57%) of 53, JD(U) 13 (81%), DMK 10 (43%) and TMC 9 (41%). Shockingly, a whopping 2,556 MPs and MLAs from 22 States are accused in criminal cases. One Congress MP has 204 cases including culpable homicide, house trespass, robbery and criminal intimidation. A 100% increase from 24% in 2004, 30% in 2009 and 34% in 2014. Alas, in these polls too there is both an abundance of supply and demand of bahubalis with numerous criminal records in the rajniti bazaar. Think. Of 623 candidates in UP’s first poll phase 615 have criminal backgrounds, over 75% of BJP’s 57 candidates 29 are criminals, Samajwadi 21 of 28, Congress 21 of 58, BSP 19 of 56, RJP 17 of 29 and AAP’s 8 of 52 contestants have declared criminal cases. In Uttarakhand 130 of 626 (25%) contestants have criminal backgrounds and 13 of 70 constituencies have been declared ‘Red Alert’ wherein three or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases. In Punjab of 468 candidates 173 (37%) have criminal antecedents. In Manipur 21% of 173 candidates are criminals. What is it about taint and cleaning rajniti that has our netas scurrying for cover? Especially when they go blue in the face about ushering in Surf ki chamkaan wali politics? Go to any extent to prove (sic) their sincere endeavours? Yet when it comes to acting on their words, they feign ignorance and play dumb, blind and deaf.

Amid the ongoing controversy on the yet-to-release Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer film ‘Pathaan’, actor and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Nusrat Jahan came out in support of its song ‘Besharam Rang’ that has sparked a row. The song was heavily criticised by the BJP as it shows Deepika Padukone wearing an ‘orange outfit’ in it. “They have a problem with everything. They have a problem with women wearing hijab. They have a problem with women wearing bikini. It is them who are telling the new-age women of India what to wear,” Jahan reportedly stated. “They are trying to command our lives by telling us what to wear, what to eat, how we should talk, how we should walk, what we should learn in school, what we should watch on TV… we are completely directed in this so-called new, evolved India. It is so scary. I fear that in the long run, I do not know where it would take all of us,” she added. ‘Besharam Rang’ was dropped online on December 12, and soon it became the talk of the town. While several liked the track, some BJP leaders, including Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra, claimed the song showed a “contaminated mindset” and even threatened to block its release in the State. Mamata Banerjee is confident that she will win, then why does the Bhabanipur bypoll matter?
TMC has been affirming a win for Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur. Why is there so much interest in the Bhabanipur bypoll? What makes it so exciting? As part of her campaigning, Mamata Banerjee visited temples, mosques, and Gurdwaras in the domestic constituency.
Mamata Bannerjee's home constituency is Bhabanipur. There have been recent reports that the people of Bhabanipur are talking about the days when Mamata Bannerjee grew up there.
The bypoll in Bhabanipur is in the spotlight. Along with Bhabanipur, Shamsher Ganj and Jangipur in the Murshidabad district will also contest the election on September 30.
Campaigning on the field by Mamata Bannerjee
"Ghorer meykey" (woman from the family) was the slogan of TMC's marketing campaign portraying the opposition are 'outsiders'. Bhabanipur will have five women candidates. Priyanka Tiberwal, the BJP candidate, seems to be Mamata Bannerjee’s strongest competitor.
Mamata Banerjee's extreme marketing campaign showcased her being a street-fighter and grassroots leader. It also gave the BJP a reason to assert that Mamata Banerjee is feeling tensed after losing the Nandigram seat despite running a massive campaign.
Keeping an eye on non-Bengali voters
TMC led the 2021 West Bengal campaign on Bangla pride by calling the BJP a foreign party. In Bhabanipur, 40% of voters are non-Bengali.
The TMC leaders have been positive in media interactions about winning votes from Marwaris, Gujaratis, and various non-Bengali ethnic groups in Bhabanipur.
In what's being seen as Mamata Banerjee versus Priyanka Tiberwal contest, the TMC seems assured of twenty percent Muslim voters in Bhabanipur. The BJP, however, banks on non-Bengali Hindu voters (around 32-35 percent) to provide Mamata Banerjee a tricky fight.
The Congress was an ally of Mamata Banerjee's TMC in 2011. The party candidate Deepa Dasmunshi, the wife of Congress politician Priyaranjan Dasmunshi, received 29 percent of the vote.
Priyanka Tiberwal is a lawyer who has initiated litigation in the case of alleged post-election violence in West Bengal. Her nomination was seen by many as a weak candidate for the BJP against Mamata Banerjee.
However, the presence of a large proportion of non-Bengali voters in Bhabanipur make Priyanka Tiberwal a potential dark horse in the voting competition.
The BJP also sent Lok Sabha MP Manoj Tiwari, a popular Bhojpuri singer turned politician, to attract significant numbers of voters from Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
WEATHER FORECAST
Weather can be a wonderful thing in Bhabanipur. Meteorological Department forecast heavy rainfall in Bhabanipur and surrounding areas by midweek due to low-pressure build-up in the Bay of Bengal.
Bhabanipur is not known for its high turnout, which is still around 50%. The Kolkata area experienced heavy rainfall last week, leading to flooding in many places. If the weather turns inclement on polling day and turnout is lower, Bhabanipur could experience a tighter-than-expected election.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, "All opposition parties unitedly supported Yashwant Sinha. Of course, we support the individual but the real fight is between two ideologies. In order to save Indian democracy, and to defend our Constitution, we must all be united in our fight against BJP. We are all rooting for Yashwant Sinha," said Congress' Mallikarjun Kharge said. Earlier on Friday, Sinha promised to raise his voice for farmers, workers, unemployed youth, women, and all marginalized sections of society, if he wins the election. In a letter to Opposition parties on Friday, Sinha thanked them for choosing him unanimously as their common presidential candidate and assured them that he will conscientiously uphold, without fear or favour, the basic values and guiding ideals of the Constitution. "I am overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude towards you and leaders of all the Opposition parties for choosing me unanimously as your common candidate to contest the Presidential Election, to be held on July 18, 2022. I thank you for the trust and confidence reposed in me. I assure you -- and the People of India --- that, if elected, I shall conscientiously uphold, without fear or favour, the basic values and guiding ideals of the Indian Constitution. In particular, as the Custodian of the Constitution, I shall not allow the light of democracy and secularism to be dimmed by the executive," Sinha said in a letter. Sinha was named as the common candidate of the Opposition for the Presidential elections on June 21. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had made the announcement of his name as the presidential candidate of the opposition during a meeting. The announcement came shortly after Sinha hinted at the acceptance of the proposal by a section of Opposition leaders to make him their presidential candidate. Sinha had quit the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2018 and joined the TMC last year. He was later appointed as the party's vice-president. However, NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu filed her nomination for the election on June 24. (Always First) Read the full article

KOLKATA: Two Trinamool Congress MPs - Dola Sen and Aparupa Poddar - were attacked on Sunday while they were travelling to Thairum in Tripura to hoist the national flag. Their cars were ransacked and the MPs were attacked and a secretary of Dola Sen sustained a head injury as bricks were thrown at their car. The mobile and bags of Aparupa Poddar were also snatched away, the MP claimed. Dola Sen, a Rajya Sabha member, said “CM Mamata had called to take information after she came to know of the attack on us. She said that this jungle raj will come to an end soon. We are returning to Kolkata by evening flight for the treatment of the ” Dola condemned the attack and said that this shows that BJP government is afraid of Trinamool. She said that bricks were hurled at random in presence of the police. The police had remained inactive which helped the attackers, she alleged. They even hit the car with bamboo and sticks, the MP added. Trinamool MPs and leaders staged a protest in Agartala in protest against the attack on two MPs. Trinamool is supposed to organize Khela Hobe Diwas on Monday in various places of Tripura. With assembly polls due in 2023, Trinamool is targetting Tripura to make its presence felt. Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh criticised the Tripura government and dubbed it as a Gunda raj rule as two women MPs were attacked on Sunday. Ghosh said: "There is no freedom in Tripura. BJP is running a Gunda-raj. Tripura is in a state of emergency. “ Ghosh a former MP said that Aparupa Poddar's bag and other essential things have been snatched away. “TMC supporters are continuously hunted and beaten up. Two women MPs on their way to celebrate Independence Day and hoist the national flag were brutally attacked. Is this the condition of democracy in Tripura?" asked Ghosh. -- "Several I-PAC employees were detained. They were in Tripura to do a survey. Why did BJP using the police to detain them? Parliament passes Bill restoring States’ right to maintain OBC lists
Parliament on Wednesday passed a constitutional amendment aimed at restoring the rights of the States and the Union Territories to maintain their own list of socially and educationally backward classes (SEBCs), commonly known as Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2021 was passed unanimously by the Rajya Sabha, a day after the Lok Sabha passed it. In a break from its protests on the Pegasus issue and farm laws, the Opposition joined the discussion and supported the Bill. While the Bill received support from across party lines, at least 10 parties, including NDA’s Janata Dal (United), called for a caste-based census and 12 parties demanded the removal of the 50% cap on reservation.
Maratha reservation
On May 5, the Supreme Court held that the Maratha reservation granted by the Maharashtra government was unconstitutional and that the President alone was empowered to identify SEBCs. In his response to the discussion on the Bill, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar said the government understood the concerns over the 50% cap and that it should be revisited as it was decided 30 years ago.
From the Opposition, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi was the first speaker. He said the government was congratulating itself for correcting a mistake it made in 2018, referring to the 102 Constitutional Amendment that said the President, in consultation with the Governor, would notify SEBCs. The select committee had pointed out that the language of the Bill could be open to misinterpretation. This Bill was an empty promise since there was a cap of 50% on reservation and this cap couldn’t be changed till the caste census was done to reveal the actual numbers, he stated
“Why are you running away from a caste census? Your Chief Minister in Bihar, another Chief Minister in Odisha and your woman MP said you are going to do this. Why is the government keeping quiet today” he asked.
Plea for caste census
The Samajwadi Party’s Ramgopal Yadav forcefully argued for a caste census. He said there was a speculation that the Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh would delist Yadav, Gujarat and Kurmi from the backward list. The BJP government, he said, was not bringing in the caste census only so that it could amend the backward list as per its wishes. There was need to raise the 50% cap on reservation, he observed.
The RJD’s Manoj K Jha said the speech by BJP’s lead speaker in the Lok Sabha Sanghamitra Maurya was no “Freudian slip”. “Every person who thinks for the welfare of the backward classes will make this demand,” he noted. The entire Bihar Assembly, he stressed, had sought time from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to urge him to bring caste census. “It is essential to know who are the ones who are forced to come to the cities looking for minor jobs? Who are the people who have to lift mud to earn a living.”
The TMC’s Derek O’Brien said the Bill was a result of incompetence of the government. “This government is not in the habit of listening to anyone. When legislation on GST was brought in, the Opposition had warned against the possible problems in its implementation. He added, “376 changes were made in GST!”
Shiv Sena member Sanjay Raut welcomed the Bill, but said it was incomplete, as the issue of 50% cap on reservation was not addressed.
The CPI’s Binoy Viswam said he supported the Bill, but opposed the “government’s politics”.
Former Prime Minister and JD(S) member H.D. Deve Gowda welcomed the Bill. He asked the government to see that reservation for women, which he had moved in his tenure, was provided.
Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge also appreciated the Bill, but said it was unfortunate that the discussion in the House had been less about the Bill and more about “what Modiji did and what Nehruji did”, referring to attacks on the Congress by the treasury benches. “You must remove the 50% cap if you want to implement this. Just add one sentence that the States can give reservation over 50%. That will solve the problems,” he added.
