I so appreciated that the script emphasised the “our doctor THINKS” “he THINKS” and then clearly stating that they didn’t inform Ellie that they didn’t ask her or tell her that she wouldn’t survive this. It makes it so clear exactly why it was such an easy choice for Joel to say no, you will not do this.

As if we already didn't know it but Craig Mazin confirmed in the podcast that this is their "I love you" to each other and this scene needs to be here because I actually sobbed at this point. And he also said that all this time Ellie knew what he meant to her, but this is when she realizes what she meant to him.

It's fun to see people discuss whether what Joel did was right or wrong when that's hardly the point.
The point is: if you had a daughter, and that daughter was taken for a potential cure of a zombie apocalypse and had to die for it without even knowing, after you've already lost another daughter, wouldn't you kill every fucking accomplice ? Because I would, I'd probably kill anyone who represented even a distant menace to her safety.
And,
I sincerely do not think they would've found a cure. It takes years and a large, indefinite number of doctors, biologists, chemists and labs to develop anything, and you seriously expect that a single man, who doesn't wait a second before killing the only glimmer of hope for humanity, who has formulated a very vague hypothesis and has not run one test that could suggest that hypothesis to be correct, to actually find a cure?

Joel’s shift to friendliness and carefreeness with Ellie in this episode did something to me, to my heart. 😭 He’d become so comfortable with her, when he started to talk about Sarah with her so easily I almost died. Lord help me

You know what? Joel saving Ellie was the only good option and I ALSO support him shooting everyone who dared to stand in his way. Why? Because they are the main characters. I'm ALWAYS rooting for them. No matter what heinous crime they commit.
There it is. I said it. And I don't need to make up reasons like "oh, the cure wouldn't have worked anyway" or "it would have been impossible to get the cure to everyone around the world because of logistics".
The only thing I NEED to know is that the main characters are safe (for now). That's it. There is no need to create a moral dilemma for yourself, no need to feel bad for liking Joel even though he did bad things.
People need to start treating these shows like what they are: fictional shows. I am not arguing against media literacy, intellectualism etc. It's fine to analyse media but there is absolutely NO reason why anyone should feel bad for supporting a character that you were SUPPOSED to support.
