Two very different types of merfolk
In my original fiction multiverse, there are at least two types of merfolk, each belonging to different universes. Both are tiny compared to humans.
The ones from the universe Pocket Mer takes place in are five inches long from the top of their heads to the ends of their tail fluke. Their tail fluke is horizontal like those of dolphins and whales, but it’s covered in light blue scales (the tail fluke is a deeper blue). They have a soft dorsal fin on their back more like those of bony fish than those of, say, a shark, along with fins shaped like half of a koi’s dorsal fin on their forearms. These fins are deep blue, but light blue scales surround them. That said, most of their upper body resembles that of a human and has skin like such. Their fingers are webbed and have cling pads that make the fingertips larger than most of the fingers. They must stay moist but can breathe both air and water, the latter using gills on their cheeks. If one of these mers is chubby, that’s normal, as the fat helps keep their tiny bodies warm and streamlines them. Since they can’t cut their hair, they grow it until it falls out, and it flows so much more in water than in air. I decided today that they also have pelvic fins on their tail that are also deep blue. I could just pass it off as characters not noticing, as I’ve used that in rectons before.
As for the ones in the universe that Son in a Fish Tank takes place in, their bodies resemble those of common goldfish, but are four inches long (full grown goldfish are way bigger). The only parts that don’t resemble a common goldfish are the head and arms. The arms are short and lack separate digits, though Mers in that universe are somehow capable of holding things anyway (think of it like how the Penguins of Madagascar can hold things with their wings). They’re also in front of the pectoral fins. Their heads resemble those of humans and are attached directly to the body without a neck. Males are colored orange while females are colored like the Prussian carp that goldfish were domesticated from in real life (and are better colored to camouflage).

That tiny lil octopus-mer you saved from being stranded in a tide pool and released back into the ocean? Remember them?
Whelp, flash forward a couple years later, you’re at that same beach you found the lil mer at. One problem though, that lil octopus mer is now the size of a massive kraken, looming over you with a happy look in their eye.

Tiny mer that, giant mer this. Where’s my size shifter mers?
The mermaid who gets caught in a net and after the captain starts being all proud and everything and the mermaid just shrinks and slips through the net’s holes, much to the captain’s disappointment.
A merman who grows big enough for all the other mers to cling on as the group travels. Perhaps he also grows to distract predators or fight off threats to his non-shifter mer friends.
What about the classic trope of someone finding a merperson on the shore and taking them back to their beach house / lighthouse, putting them in their Tub. Maybe the merperson is unconscious for a bit but the lighthouse keeper comes to check on them and notices that they’re gone. Panicking they check around but the floor isn’t wet, then they see a small movement from the bath. Hiding behind a rubber duck is the merperson all tiny, not knowing what else to do but hide. Perhaps the keeper calms them down and calms them down, allowing the mer to grow to the size the keeper originally saw. Perhaps the keeper helps them heal and let’s them go after making a beautiful friendship only to one day meet the merperson again, but this time the roles are reversed. The keeper is saved by the merperson, and having been put on an unknown island. The keeper has no clue how they are gonna make it back but thinks the merperson can help them, the mer nods and grows bigger to make the journey faster, much to the keepers surprise.
Long story short, giant mers and tiny meds are great, but give me the shifters!

The land-maid giant had been sitting there for a while, staring into the little oasis of ocean she’d placed them in. They felt…very exposed, with nowhere to hide but a few sparse patches of grass. They kept telling themself that it didn’t matter how much light there was or how open the waters were, no hunters could reach them here. There was a long stretch of land between themself and the sea.
The thought was as terrifying it was reassuring.
She lit up as they worked up the courage to peek back out at her from the grass. Her words were muffled, but not so much that they couldn’t understand her. She was bubbling over with questions—what they were, who they were, if they were alright, did they need anything else, were they hungry, what did they even eat, where did they come from, how did they get here…?
They waved and smiled, but kept silent. Bad things happened when sirens spoke. Their voice was dangerous, the magic hard to control, and the land-folk were particularly susceptible to its curses.
This one had saved them from a horrible death drying out in the sun. What sort of thank you would it be to answer her?

Thinking about
Thinking about how a giant shows off their power to a tiny (a mer shredding a fish with their claws; a human cracking a pistachio open; a giant uprooting trees) in order to convey “I am powerful.”
And they show how gentle they can also be (a mer handing the now small pieces of meat to a smaller mer so they can eat easier; a human sliding the pistachio over to a borrower/fairy as a sign of peace; a giant holding their human in a gentle fist with so so much care) in order to convey “but I will never hurt you.”
But the tiny only sees, only hears, them say “I am powerful.” The tiny cannot hear them say “I will not hurt you,” because they’re too busy filling in the rest of the sentence with “I could easily overpower you without a second thought.”
(The smaller mer only sees the claws tearing into their own flimsy scales; the borrower/fairy only sees them being torn apart; the human only sees their roof being pulled off.
They all see themselves being crushed.)

From One Tank to Another
Did you want a sequel to Son in a Fish Tank?
Here it is!
In this, Flan is kidnapped from the aquarium he lives in to one in a nightclub, presented to them as a gift by someone who remains unnamed in the story but has a name I’ve already revealed.
Also, I made a visual design for Flan, but it’s an edited recolor of part of Ponyo Parody by Friendlyfoxpal, so I doubt it’d be okay to show it.
Anyway, it still features Shelby and Xavier, mother and (biological) son and two OCs created by JaiTheBookwormUWU on Wattpad. In this world, she adopted Flan as her second son.
FictionPress link (will use the share function on AO3, DeviantArt, and Wattpad to post links to those sites’ releases): https://www.fictionpress.com/s/3365393/1/From-One-Tank-to-Another

I know sharks are overdone in meer context and I love that you picked bit more unusual species for twinyards (not the ones that actively hunt other fish) but have you considered any shark designs for anyone else before ? I love how natural the tails you draw look it's my favourite thing about your meer arts
Also do you have favourite fish?
Art idea your favourite fish as tail for meer of your favourite character
It’s just that sharks are so coooolllllll
I have a lot of the Trojans team as sharks in my mer au! I like them being a fun loving group lol they can PROTECT they can ATTACK but mostly they just wanna tussle 😌
And I can’t say for sure I have a favorite fish (bc I love so many fish, it’s such a huge group to choose from) but I did see a pic of what I believe is called a pinnatus batfish?? And I lovedddd the coloring so much, it’s what I was going to draw my oc Q as before I landed on regal angelfish for him
So sorry it’s not an aftg character but I doodled Q to see what might have been lol 🤲
Tumblr media
(Though if you wanna see him as an angelfish that’s here)
