was born in fort lauderdale florida but there is a vERY low chance he will ever admit that, he’ll just say he’s from new jersey. as far as he’s concerned, he’s always been from new jersey even if his family did move there after he turned twelve

speaking of things lukas probably wont ever tell u but i’m including them anyway: his family is kind of messy. not majorly but like a little bit more than average. he had two brothers, now he only has one. i’m not gonna include a whole lot of nitty gritty here i’ll save it for when i write the real bio and can actually do it justice but its the reason they moved from florida and it has had a pretty major effect on lukas over time obviously

he’s the baby of the family and he’s pretty much always been treated like one. it has left him pretty immature and irresponsible. still learning that his actions have consequences and that he cant just be a total dick all the time. he’s improved in those areas a fair bit since he started at columbia a year ago but he still has a long way to go

he didn’t ever really expect to go to columbia, he’s from a middle class family and his dad didn’t even go to college. he applied for columbia just as a might as well give it a go thing. like maybe it will happen. they had a film course and although the course itself isn’t really great, the connections to the industry available at columbia were valuable enough for him to try. he was wait listed up until basically the last minute, preparing to go to a college in boston instead but when he was accepted he knew he had to go. for himself, for his family, and for his lost brother.

obviously irresponsible attitude has led to some Bad Decision Making including but not limited to partying and drugs. he doesn’t prioritise that lifestyle over his school work (bc he knows how lucky he is to be at columbia at all) but he is a big believer that you need to experience things to be a great artist and he plans on being the greatest artist so bad decision town here we come !!!!

old roommate(s) : lukas was probably an entertaining roommate but probably verged on annoying pretty easily. he’s messy, gross, probably didn’t respect the do ur fucking dishes rule in first year ( probs still doesnt tbh ). but he also has a password to every streaming account plus a phat hard drive full of movies and shows that he is absolutely willing to share with u so just depends what ur into i guess. maybe this connection led to friendship or maybe they hate each other now. im down for either/both

dealer: hi welcome back to bad decision town. lukas isn’t into any hard stuff but is a big weed smoker (to my understanding medicinal cannabis is allowed but lukas def doesn’t have a prescription), then after that it’s kind of just experimenting. will chat more details if u wanna take this connection

booze leachers: so yes lukas is 19 but he has four, thats right, four fake ids. he is not willing to give u his contact for fake ids but he is willing to buy u booze if u pay him. dont hate the player hate the game

gang gang: pretty much just a close group of friends. i imagine all pretty relaxed, all pretty chill. idk what to say here except i want people to care about him and let him put on dumb movies and watch them with him and probably have dumb matching stick and poke tattoos and hog a communal tv to play mario kart but lets talk about it

fast food workers deserve respect too: as mentioned, lukas works at a 24hr pizza joint near campus which means he’s seen some shit. one of the things he’s seen multiple times is drunk student trashing the place. whether it be vomit, forgetting how to hold a cup, or bet try at a food fight lukas has seen it and he’s cleaned it up too. this connection could be that maybe he helped someone out and cleaned them up and got them back to campus when their friends ditched and now they look out for lukas too and its a positive connection. or maybe lukas hates their guts and spits on their food whenever they show up ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ who’s to say

hot girl bummer by blackbear: now listen here’s an angsty connection i want, and i def want to plot it out way more with whoever takes it on but basic outline of what i have in mind: they’ve kind of sort of been dating for a while but they’re just falling out of whatever they had to begin with. they were never official, they probs def fucked around with other people while they were ““““together”””””, lots of oh sorry ur taking it so seriously i thought we were just chilling bullshit. all of this girls friends probs hate lukas and he definitely hates them back. were probably once really good friends and had a really good time together but they’ve lost it. will they find it again or will it fizzle out? lets find out together xoxo

lukas is a bad influence: if u have gotten this far u may have noticed that lukas is not a very good influence at all. this is someone probs his age or younger that wants to loosen up and have a good time and lukas completely encourages that. bonus points if this connection is a combo with the above connection bc lukas is a gross boi and would be like wow listening to my bad ideas thats so sexy and cool of u ya know. but also doesnt have to be that ! could just be lukas thinks its funny and thinks that someone listening to him is just like good content that could get him on barstool

lukas is good-ly (??????) influenced: also basic as hell and p much just the opposite of above. someone who is a good influence on lukas. encourages creativity and ambition instead of straight up recklessness. again, i see it as an older character but no gender seen here. a lot of this would be based around ur character so lets chat

michael bublé’s co parents: lukas has a goldfish named michael bublé (or just michael), i picture him having got it while high as heck during the day and just being like This Is A Good Idea. maybe ur character was with him and they were co parents from the start or maybbe they came into the picture later ??? i’m honestly down for whichever just give michael the love he deserves pls

and probably just about anything else these are just some ideas, i totally wanna plot further and brainstorm so please still hmu if none of these fit ur character we’ll plot something up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tagged by @vieliwrites and @bookenders, I didn’t know how to go about that, so I’ve reblogged this with the other part.

1. Where’s your favourite place to write? (bedroom, coffee shop, study, etc.)

I write wherever I suppose. Usually at my desk in my room, sometimes when I eat at a cafeteria, rare times in bed on my laptop, even rarer times on my phone wherever.

2. Do you have any writing habits you’re trying to shake?

Recently I’ve been looking for filter words in my writing. ‘She thought.’ ‘He felt.’ ‘They wondered.’

3. If you could spend one whole day with one of your characters, who would it be and what would you do with them?

I’d spend the day with Dee.

She’d try to figure out all my troubles and woes, I’d ignore her attempts (or blab everything to be honest), but TRY to just give that woman some company when she’s off work. She’d probably have something in mind, and it’d probably be really interesting to me because she’d deduce it spot on. Ultimately the day would end where I’d feel guilty, because I’d feel like she did more for me than me for her. But she’d go straight to sleep and wake up and head straight for work to interact with more people. And have made it through another day without the looming moments of solitude.

4. Do you have any pre-writing rituals or habits? (lighting some candles, showering, etc.)

Music. Water bottle. And I think that sets me up just fine.

5. What’s your favourite genre of book and is it the same as your current wip? Why or why not?

My favorite genre probably is the same as my wip. I like fantastical situations that also give an excuse to push characters to the brink. Whether that’s Gov Spy genre, Space Adventure, Psychological Thriller, Fantasy Quest - whatever mixes Action with slice-of-life, but also higher stakes, you’ve got me.

6. What’s the hardest part of creating a character for you?

Making them well rounded with flaws. I created a sibling to my protagonist that was almost perfect - her only flaw was ‘caring too much’ which made her an inefficient pushover. She was slated to die and I was heartbroken - but it had to be done.

On rewrite, she became much more capable. I don’t want to say she grew a backbone, but she DID gain a certain set of moral values that started to contradict her sister, my protagonist. After that, she suddenly wasn’t slated to die anymore either. Its the characters that don’t have anywhere to grow that get killed off.

7. Do you live by a motto or quote?

Am I interested? Yes? Alright lets do it. No? Alright lets wait a few hours and see how I feel then.

Everyone says don’t wait for inspiration - and I’m getting that a little more now, but up to this point, pushing myself wasn’t the best idea.

8. What are your favourite relationship tropes in fiction?

Really strongly bonded relationship’s that know each other inside out, but are at odds too. So - antagonist and protagonist are frenemies. Or two friends bicker constantly, but at the end of the day, will have the other’s back. Siblings might fit that description. Or betrayal. Or two heads of an issue that used to be on the same side. That’s my jam.

9. Was there something in particular that inspired your current wip? (a piece of art, a song, a scene in a film, etc.)

Yes actually. Troll Hunters.

When Jim came back from the Darklands, his first day or two, he constantly interacted with his old world differently. But when new dangers from the Darkworld showed up, Jim handled them much more proficiently than before, while everyone else was still caught off guard.

That directly started the first idea of Blooming Under Night. It blossomed and spiraled from there, but the first few chapters so far especially, have that same core. I think what caught me was a character going about a regular life in a way that confuses or is obviously different and even a bit weird to everyone else. But that a character like that still has different ways they’re more skilled and knowledgeable, and that those situations really bring this understanding in full view.

On revision, I’m really gonna try to instill that.

The Chemist by Stephanie Meyer.

11. Have you ever dreamt of your OCs? If so, what was it about?

I have not. If I did, I have no idea what it’d be about.

Maybe This Time – Part 5

The room was nearly immersed in total darkness, but through a thin ray of moonlight coming through the window Amelia was able to identify the book placed on Owen’s nightstand, opposite to her.

After she was done exploring the place with her eyes, Amelia diverted her gaze to the man who was now comfortably sleeping next to her. Apparently, Owen had been reading one of her books that she’d left behind after moving out. The realization brought a happy smile to her face and she felt even closer to him.

Owen was deeply asleep, his relaxed facial expression a complete contrast to the fierce, strong look he usually had on. Amelia felt her heart fluttering when she thought about the passionate moments they’d shared on that bed only a few hours before.

After their deeply emotional exchange in the living room, she had cried in Owen’s arms while he also let his walls down for her. Through a heartfelt conversation, they had finally been able to voice their feelings and properly apologize for their mistakes. And when all the pain was finally exposed, they had comforted each other, first with words and then in the way only Owen was allowed to comfort her.

Amelia had never felt this intimate to someone before. Sure, she had had relationships with guys she had liked, maybe loved even. But it had never felt exactly like this. With Owen, it simply felt like it was more. As if she wasn’t sharing just her body, but mostly her heart and her soul. And the most amazing part of it all was that not only Owen did the same, he also seemed to be just as awed by that new reality as she was. No one had ever made Amelia feel that loved, cherished and safe, all at the same time. Owen was the only one who had that huge impact on her and she was determined to keep it that way.

When he had asked her to stay for the night, Amelia didn’t even hesitate before saying yes. She had wanted that night with him more than anything and even though she was sure that at some point they’d have to sit down and talk about what it really meant, she didn’t regret her decision. Her body was still ignited in every single place his hands and lips had touched. Owen was a generous lover and he’d proved that through the whole two hours they’d spent together before he’d finally fallen asleep, defeated by physical and mental exhaustion.

Amelia had dozed off quickly after too, but now she was too blissful to actually relax properly. Unable to resist the urge, she gently touched his face with her fingertips, hoping she wouldn’t wake him up.

Very slowly, Amelia traced the outline of his face, smiling with joy when she felt his arm tightening its grip around her waist to pull her closer. Even in his sleep Owen could be possessive and demanding. Not that she minded, actually. It felt amazing to be touching him while she distracted herself with the masculine angle of his jaw.

Owen slowly regained conscience, secretly fighting his sleep. His body and mind were too relaxed, but when his eyes opened for the first time, what he saw enchanted him so much that he didn’t feel like going back to sleep anymore.

Amelia was staring at him with a sweet, adorable lazy smile while she traced the outline of his face with one of her fingers. After noticing he was awake, the neurosurgeon still didn’t say a word; instead she brought her head closer, nearly touching the tip of her nose to his as she kept intensely looking at him with that gorgeous pair of silver eyes.

The day before had begun horribly, with him drowning in doubt, guilt and anger and not really sure how to deal with those emotions. Later on, Amelia had surprised him by showing up at his doorstep and, to Owen’s sheer satisfaction, she’d spent the night wrapped in his arms, right where she belonged.

After seeing the joyful expression on her face, Owen returned her smile, feeling just as happy as she seemed to be. His hand went around her waist and up her bare back, pulling her against him at the same time Amelia’s thumb gently brushed his lips.

“You have pretty lips,” she decided, widening her grin. Owen chuckled in response to her unexpected comment and watched the satisfaction in her eyes. “I mean it,” Amelia reinforced after seeing the incredulity on his face.

Owen kept busy exploring the softness of her skin against his touch, marveled by her spontaneity and plain adorableness. It was no secret Amelia that didn’t have a filter, and long ago he’d noticed she wasn’t the kind of person who’d say something nice about someone because she had an agenda. So he didn’t doubt she was serious about her unusual compliment. Not that he was sure having his lips called pretty was in fact a compliment, to be honest.

“You say the darnedest things,” Owen joked, loving the way she laughed in response. He didn’t wait until she caught her breath, leaning over to kiss her smiling lips.

After they broke apart, Amelia remained lying by his side in bed, feeling like she would never get enough of that moment.

“Stop looking at me like that,” Owen said after a while of silently staring at each other. His voice was serious but the playful look on his face betrayed his intentions.

“Like what?” Amelia smiled mischievously, openly flirting.

“Like you’re going to cost me my job,” Owen explained, “if you keep smiling like that you’re only going to make me keep you here in bed all day long,” he heard her delightful laughter in response and rolled to her top.

“Would that be so bad?” Amelia provoked him, swiftly running her fingers on the extension of his arms and shoulders to finally wrap them around his neck.

Owen looked deeply into her eyes, noticing the relaxed, happy expression on her face.

“No,” he muttered in response right before kissing her lips with desire.

Amelia gladly took up on his initiative, kissing him back with just as much passion. The previous night had been amazing and this morning was no different. Except before, there had been too much built up tension, causing their time together to be intense and explosive.

This time around it was like they were slowly getting back to their usual synchrony, though. Amelia knew there was absolutely no rush, just as she knew she’d enjoy every single step of the way and longed for it. As Owen’s lips traced a downward path on her neck, she arched her back, eager for what she knew was coming next. Even though it was exciting and fun, Amelia forced herself to be patient because she wanted to make the most of their time together.

“I missed this,” she confessed, running a hand through his hair and gently scratching his scalp in an affectionate caress. “I missed you,” Amelia added when Owen brought his head up to look into her eyes.

She watched as his expression transformed when he heard her words. A happy, loving smile stood out on his face as he smoothed her hair, gently pulling a brown lock from her face.

“Me too,” he replied with a whisper, leaning over to whisper in her ear. “So much…”

Amelia felt the touch of his lips at the same time she buried her face on the crook of his neck, too pleased to have him that close. His hands traveled through the whole extension of her body as his lips followed suit. When she thought it couldn’t get any better, Owen disappeared beneath the covers, spending the next minutes entirely dedicated to giving her pleasure.

Amelia’s hands dug in his scalp as she pulled him nearer, too overwhelmed with pleasure to have any rational response to the sensation his tongue was causing. Before she could control it, her entire body seized with a delirious response that left her out breath and Owen absolutely satisfied.

“I have to admit,” Owen confessed with a smirk, too proud to hide it, “this has become my favorite thing to watch,” he added, obviously referring to Amelia’s climax.

She gazed at him, smiling widely between heavy breaths.

“I can’t complain,” Amelia provoked him back, pulling him closer.

Owen kissed the smile off her face, feeling his heart fluttering with absolute adoration for the woman who was capable of not only sexually charging him, but also of emotionally involving him in a web of love and affection he simply never got tired of.

“I want you,” Amelia declared, rolling over him to take control of the situation. Owen grinned with satisfaction as he watched her straddle him, staying on the perfect position to absolutely torment him with the sway of her hips. He allowed Amelia to take the lead, feeling shivers running through his spine once her hands started to slowly run on the extension of his arms until their fingers intertwined and she pushed theirs hands against the pillows.

“You can absolutely have me,” Owen joked in return, delighted and totally pleased by the kisses she was now planting on his chest.

“You know…” Amelia’s voice turned into a whisper as she reveled in the smooth, warm texture of his skin, “when we were just back from the hospital,” she said, and Owen knew she was talking about the time he’d asked her to move back in when she had been discharged after her tumor removal, “I used to lie here on this same bed at night and think about how much I wanted to do this…” Amelia slowly traced a path of kisses from his chest all the way up to his neck, absolutely unaware of how much her confession meant to him. The honesty of her words messed with her own emotions and Amelia didn’t hesitate before letting go and saying everything that her heart was feeling. “And this…” she added with the same husky voice, capturing his earlobe between her teeth, causing Owen to feel a mix of pleasure and adoration for her. “Or this,” Amelia breathed in and out, finally letting go of his fingers to cradle his face between her hands, gently brushing her lips on his. She saw the look of expectation in his eyes. Owen was so good to her, so generous. He loved her without expecting anything in return and she was determined to never again take that for granted, hoping that she could only make him as happy as he made her. “Owen, I am so sorry,” Amelia apologized again, looking deeply into his eyes. Owen noticed how anguished she looked and in that moment, he had no doubt she meant every word she was saying.

“I know,” he said with an understanding smile, using one finger to wipe an unshed tear from her eye. “You don’t have to apologize again, sweetheart. I know…” he comforted her, pulling Amelia for an embrace at the same time he rolled over her, keeping her trapped under his body and between his arms. “I have already forgiven you,” Owen gently pulled apart, smiling with adoration in his eyes as he touched his forehead to hers, as if he could look into her soul. Amelia still seemed upset and at that moment, Owen surprised himself, because he thought he couldn’t love that amazing woman more than he already did and yet he constantly found himself falling harder for her. “Now it’s time for you to forgive yourself,” he reminded her, hating to see her in pain.

Amelia’s mix of sorrow and relief clogged her throat when she took in the meaning of his words. The sensations Owen had just caused on her body were now mixing with the emotions he was giving her, causing the neurosurgeon to feel more vulnerable than she’d felt until now.

“I am scared, Owen…” Amelia admitted with a sheepish voice.

“Why?” Owen frowned slightly, caressing her cheek with his thumb.

“Because,” Amelia looked straight into his eyes as she let all her walls down, “whenever I am this happy, something bad happens and screws it all up,” she painfully remembered, thinking back about each and every happy time of her life. “Usually, I screw it all up.”

Owen chuckled, unable to resist her.

“Nothing bad is going to happen,” he reassured Amelia with absolute conviction. “All the bad stuff we went through, the shame, the guilt?” he looked into her eyes very suggestively. “It’s all gone, now. For good,” Owen said with determination. Both he and Amelia had seen enough hurt and heartbreak for a lifetime and he was determined to never let her go through any other nightmare, ever again. “Nothing bad is going to happen because I won’t let it,” he said with security.

Amelia stayed in silence for the following seconds, apparently having an internal battle with her own emotions.

“Promise?”

Owen couldn’t help smiling with affection when he saw the look on her face. Amelia’s child-like expression instilled the most primitive protection instincts in him. When she looked at him looking so small and vulnerable with so much expectancy and trust in her eyes it completely tore him apart. He would do everything within his power to make sure she only had reasons to smile from now on. And that began now.

“I promise.”

Owen sealed his vow with a kiss that promptly reignited their passion. Amelia responded to his touch by giving back in the same rhythm as he gave her. And when Owen was sure he couldn’t take it any longer, he finally ended their agony, thinking that nothing in the world felt so good as when Amelia’s legs were wrapped around him and he buried himself deep inside her, drowning them in the most delirious fits of pleasure.

“Why are you acting so weird?”

Amelia’s thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Meredith’s surprised voice.

“What?”

“You have a lost look on your face, like you’re miles from here,” the general surgeon clarified, squinting conspicuously. “Are you daydreaming again?”

“No,” Amelia tried to sound convincing.

Of course she was lying. Her mind really did feel like it was miles from there because even though she had a patient’s chart in her hand, all she could think about was Owen.

And how the world seemed to have suddenly stopped when he’d loved her that morning.

“Are those Kimmie’s results?” Meredith asked, finally bringing Amelia back down to earth.

“Uh,” the neurosurgeon blinked twice before focusing on the lab files again. “Yes! Yes, they are,” she nodded, already tuned back to the present moment. Her patient’s latest exams showed no acute abnormalities in the critical hours post procedure. Amelia had every reason to assume everything was working out. “My main concern is to make sure her renal function remains alright after the protein I injected her with, but so far so good,” she stated with a proud smile. “Properly functioning kidneys,” Amelia added with an excessively happy smile.

“You’re weird,” Meredith let out a sigh before rolling her eyes and finally devoting herself to the charts she’d come to the desk to get.

“Yeah, tell me something new,” Amelia replied unaffectedly, grabbing her things before leaving the area. She really didn’t want to give the other surgeon the chance to ask why she hadn’t gone home the previous night, choosing to let her believe that she’d stayed at the hospital for Kimmie.

The thought about the night she’d just had brought back a smile to Amelia’s face. She longed to be with Owen again and meet him at the house later that night. The neurosurgeon still had no idea how she would justify another night of absence to her sisters, but she could worry about that later. For the time being, she preferred that whatever was happening between she and Owen remained only between the two of them. It was already complicated enough trying to figure it all out without involving other people.

What were they, anyway? Was there a category they could fit in? Judging by what she’d seen lately, the possibilities were endless these days, and everything had a label to choose from. Maybe friends with just too many benefits that also happened to be soul mates and actually had divorce papers waiting to be signed was actually a thing now? Amelia had no idea, but her silly thoughts made her chuckle. Nodding her head in disapproval to her own sarcastic ideas, she pushed the elevator button, too distracted to see who was passing by around her until the loud ding of the doors opening finally brought her back to reality.

“Hi,” a thin brunette woman walked past her, entering the elevator and waiting for her to do the same. “You’re not coming in?” she asked after hesitating.

Amelia took a fraction of second to realize she was once again wandering inside her mind and took a step forward, finally allowing the doors to close.

Carina DeLuca was looking at her, but at the moment Amelia gazed back, the other woman looked away, apparently too embarrassed to be caught staring.

After the morning Amelia had walked in on Carina having breakfast with Owen, the two of them hadn’t really interacted much. And the fact the Italian doctor knew she had slept with the husband of the woman standing right next to her added a whole new load of tension to thicken the already awkward atmosphere.

“Hot day today, isn’t it?” Carina started, obviously trying to make small conversation. That short elevator ride seemed to be taking longer than usual. “It’s always rainy and chilly here but today it’s incredibly warm.”

“It’s funny you said how we went from a chilling cold to a comfortable warmth,” Amelia lied with an evil grin. “I could swear someone else had the exact same impression earlier this morning.”

Carina didn’t fully understand the meaning of the neurosurgeon’s words, but she figured it was better not to ask.

“How is your little patient doing?” the obstetrician asked with her thick accent. Like everyone else at the hospital, she’d heard about the Kimmie’s case and sympathized with the plight. “I heard she had surgery yesterday.”

“It wasn’t exactly surgery, but yeah, she got her procedure and she is doing fine, thank you,” Amelia nodded, grateful for the other’s seemingly genuine interest. “Are you working on any more of those cool MRI cases today?” she asked, immediately regretting it.

Suddenly, associating Carina DeLuca with orgasms didn’t seem so amusing as it had once been.

“Not really,” Carina replied with a smile, glad to be talking about work. “I am actually working with Pierce and Hunt in the ER today,” the obstetrician elaborated. “One of Robbins’ patients collapsed during grocery shopping. Pierce thinks she had an atrial fibrillation, Hunt is worried about her mildly ruptured liver,” Carina explained. “I am just hoping she won’t go into premature labor.”

Amelia didn’t exactly register those words because just as she obstetrician mentioned Owen’s name, she had been surprised with how much it had actually bothered her to hear that Owen and Carina were working together.

When the obstetrician walked out of the elevator after saying goodbye, Amelia was still distracted with her own thoughts. She was just being stupid, she told herself. Owen and Carina obviously hadn’t had anything meaningful. Just like she and Koracick, whatever had happened between the two of them had been purely physical and clearly not that deep. It was no secret that the Italian surgeon was still into Arizona Robbins, just as Amelia was sure that Owen had meant every one of his words when he’d told her he loved and missed her.

Amelia spent the following minutes pondering why she felt so annoyed all of a sudden. Okay, maybe she was a little jealous of Carina because she’d slept with Owen. But that wasn’t enough to justify her sudden restlessness. There had to be something else she couldn’t quite grasp at that moment. And just like it happened whenever her mind was racing with emotions she couldn’t quite figure out, the neurosurgeon chose to focus on work, realizing at least there she’d find answers to her questions.

Despite Amelia’s best efforts to leave the hospital at a decent hour, work got the best of her and it was already late when she finally wrapped everything for the day. Even though she wasn’t living with Owen anymore, for some reason the house he’d bought felt a lot more like home than Meredith’s place.

Two knocks on the door was all it took for Owen to welcome her with a tight hug and a playful kiss on the tip of her nose.

“You took forever,” he complained but it was obvious on his expression he was the happiest to see her.

“Did you think I was going to bail on you?” Amelia smiled against his lips, seeing in his eyes that the idea had definitely crossed his mind, but he was too kind to say it. “I am not going anywhere this time, Owen. I mean it,” she assured him, wrapping her arms around his waist and pulling him closer.

“It’s not like I was going to let you, anyway,” Owen raised his eyebrows playfully, determined to pass the matter off lightly and keep a comfortable atmosphere between them. “I hope you’re hungry,” he added, looking into her eyes. Amelia didn’t look like she had any intention to let go of their hug and he loved it. “I made us dinner.”

“I am starved,” she confessed, feeling her heart skip a beat when he looked so obviously satisfied. Amelia looked from the living room to the kitchen, noticing that apparently Owen had been busy. “Can I take a shower first, though? I spent the entire day at the hospital,” she justified, reluctant to sit down to dinner with him after being in and out of the OR and ICU all day.

“If I had known, I would have waited for you,” Owen answered with a spark in his eyes. Amelia then noticed his comfortable pajama pants and a grey T-shirt.

“I won’t be long,” the neurosurgeon promised, standing on the tip of her toes to give him a peck on the lips before running to the shower.

Even from a distance, Amelia caught the delicious smell coming from the kitchen as Owen finished preparing their meal. Fifteen minutes later, she returned from the bathroom, delighting Owen with the sight of her naked thighs suggestively disappearing under one of his shirts that unsurprisingly were too large for her.

There was something extremely sexy about watching the woman he loved in his own clothes. Not only Amelia looked absolutely cute on them, she also reminded him that she was obviously comfortable in his presence. And then there was the fact that it made Owen feel like she was his, and no one else’s.

“The food smells amazing, when can we eat?”

“I am just setting the table,” Owen replied.

“Let me help,” Amelia stepped up to get the plates, thinking it was the least she could do. “What’s under that bowl?” she asked with a contaminating smile, her charming dimples dancing on her cheeks as she looked at him.

“A string of garlic,” Owen replied with a fake solemn voice, looking in her direction with his eyes darkened by desire. “To hang around your neck.” Amelia threw her head back in a fit of laughter that broke all of his defenses and Owen couldn’t hold a wide smile any longer.

“I thought that was for vampires only,” she said approaching him and the food he’d prepared.

“No, it works for evil little witches too,” Owen playfully added, absolutely delighted by her smile.

“But really, what’s under the bowl?” Amelia looked at him with sheer joy. “What did you cook for us?” she didn’t wait for his answer and lifted the top of a pan.

“There is garlic bread for appetizers and fettuccini Alfredo for dinner,” Owen finally answered, seeing on her face that she’d definitely approved it. He wasn’t surprised, though. His choice of dish had not been a coincidence.

Amelia looked at the beautiful creamy sauce she’d smelled from the bathroom. Her empty stomach was now more than ever craving for food that probably tasted as wonderful as it looked.

Still amazed by her own thoughts and anxious to sit down to eat, the neurosurgeon distractedly asked:

“That’s one hell of a good menu,” she smiled playfully but her compliment was honest. “And what’s for dessert?”

“You.”

His lack of hesitation and serious tone amused her, and Amelia looked up to meet Owen’s intense gaze. By the time she processed his answer, she was already laughing contagiously again. Owen chuckled as he reveled in her happiness, thinking that he wouldn’t mind if every other evening of his life went exactly like this.

After they had dinner, the pair sat down on the couch to watch TV. Owen had to be honest and admit that even though he was trying his hardest to pay attention to the movie, it was getting increasingly more difficult to do so when Amelia kept moving in his arms, reminding him at every ten seconds that she really was there, that they were really together. Her small figure was gently weighing against his as Amelia lay down with her upper body on his lap, holding his hand between her own at all times.

“You’ll spend the night again, right?” he whispered in her ear before gently capturing her earlobe with his lips.

Amelia chuckled with the ticklish touch of his trimmed beard against the skin of her neck.

“Of course,” she shifted in his arms, forgetting all about what was on TV as she rolled opposite to it, facing Owen instead. “There’s something I’ve been thinking since earlier today…” Amelia started, unsure how to tackle the subject. At the same time she really was determined to communicate better with Owen from now on, it wasn’t exactly that easy either and it would probably take practice.

“Go on,” he encouraged her, just as eager to make sure they could talk about anything.

“Remember when I came to the house that day I was going back to work after my surgery?” Amelia finally brought up the uncomfortable subject that involved their separation. In her room in Meredith’s house, Owen’s wedding ring was still well kept inside one of her drawers. She knew eventually they’d have to make a decision about their marriage and their impeding divorce, but they didn’t have to jump straight to deciding at the moment. They needed, however, to make sure they were on the same page. After seeing on Owen’s face that he was keeping up with her, the neurosurgeon added “we agreed at the time that we would be friends, right?” she inquired, seeing the confirmation in his eyes. “And well… We also agreed that we could talk to each other about the people we were dating and-”

“What?” Owen interrupted her, suddenly not following the conversation anymore.

“You know…” Amelia bit her bottom lip, unsure of how to address what she wanted to say. “We had this conversation and agreed that we would openly talk like friends if we were dating other people-”

“Are you saying you want to date someone else?” Owen interrupted her again, obviously bothered by the idea.

“No,” Amelia chuckled, feeling like a huge weight had just been lifted off her shoulders with his response. “I am saying that I don’t.”

“Oh,” Owen finally understood why she’d brought up the subject and smiled, just as happy and relieved. “Fine, then,” he kissed the top of her head with affection. “Let’s forget we ever agreed to that.”

The trauma surgeon also knew that eventually, they would have to decide where their marriage was going and talk about if they still wanted the same things or not to make sure what they should do about the divorce. They were trying again and both were clearly invested in making it work, but they didn’t have to rush into anything that would probably only add pressure to their already fragile reconciliation. For the time being, he would settle for having Amelia in his arms and spending time with her.

And especially, he would settle for not sharing her with anyone else.

“Good,” her voice distracted Owen from his thoughts. “I spent the whole day so stressed over this,” Amelia admitted, unaware of how much she was touching him. “I didn’t even realized I was bothered until I was actually faced with the idea of you seeing other people… It took me a while but I finally realized that and thought we should talk about it… You know, just to be clear.”

Owen smiled, too pleased by her confession. He had spent so much time unsure about so many things, including her feelings, that now he couldn’t pass up an opportunity to hear her talk about them every time she brought up the subject.

“Why were you so bothered, though?” Owen teased, hoping she would admit she was jealous.

Amelia brought her head up from her chest to look deeply into his eyes.

“Because I love you.”

Owen was taken by surprise by the sweet sound of her words and wrapped her tighter in his arms, kissing her with passion. He’d provoked her expecting Amelia to respond with jealousy, but she’d given him something infinitely better in return. Owen knew she had used the same sentence she’d unknowingly forced him to say the day before, and her consideration and smart manners only added to the affection in his heart. He simply loved her with everything he had.

“So…” when they pulled apart, Amelia looked into his eyes with a smile that mixed tenderness and mischief, sneakily grabbing back his hand. “Does that mean you’re my boyfriend now?” she teased, kissing his fingers before biting his knuckles.

Owen seemed confused for a moment.

“No,” he joked, seeing the momentarily apprehensive look on her face before he clarified. “I can’t be your boyfriend,” Owen tilted his head and teased her, “you see, technically, I am your husband.”

“Okay, but I want you to be my boyfriend too,” Amelia insisted like that was the final decision.

Owen couldn’t think of a response to give, settling for kissing her instead. He wanted the same thing. He wanted to date her and take care of her as much as she would allow him. Amelia was amazing and he loved everything about her. Her looks seduced him, her wit impressed him and most of all, her caring heart completely broke all of his defenses. All Owen knew at that moment was that he wanted her in his life forever.

Amelia kept on teasing him, playfully nudging his nose with hers and distracting Owen with kisses in the most important parts of the movie. By the time it was over, he had already trapped her under his body on the couch and made love to her with torturing ease.

As they went to bed that night, Amelia’s mind was too relaxed to think about anything else. The neurosurgeon knew she couldn’t change what had already happened, but the moments she was living now were a vast improvement compared to what the past few months had been. As she lay in bed in Owen’s arms, quickly falling asleep inside his soothing embrace, Amelia didn’t yet have any idea of just her life was about to alter even more. Just minutes before on the couch of their living room, a seed had just been planted. A big change was about to happen, first in her body but then in her life and Owen’s.

And dealing with the tiny new addition that was about to come would surely serve to shape, modify and completely improve their entire future.

I said it was a great night we opened up the breach yesterday near Tallahassee and he's almost out and Miami is opened up this morning it's massive and it's being filled constantly gigantic and so many idiots out there and we killed off like half the state because we can shut up about us clear nothing the waterways and what we said was it's an emergency it's coming down here silently with the rivers and they said we don't want it to be cleaned out it's not our problem and we said it is our problem move out if you don't like it and they start screaming why we're doing it by the way we can't hear anything space so we're going to the door and tell him I'm going to have to hold it down you're going to take care of and say why you're doing your job I'll do mine get off my property stuff like that so one thing I said no just stood there like he says I didn't know because I'm going to get my gun I said I wouldn't do that if I were you treasure Island says why not this is cuz I'm going to rip out your laranxs cuz I'm tired of hearing you you said this I'm not just going to stand here looking at you it turns around stands here and says I'm slowing you down I said no I'm distracting you they're just doing it you can hear the machine going away can't you because that's going to get his gun so I came in grab them tied him up and gagged him I d

Havana Savana. York. Tallahassee Yes he climbed out the breach this am. Is only 100 miles the breach is 50 wide he's only 22 wide is out up and unfettered. That makes four. He's on the warpath here and it's raising his army he's got tons of it up since it's going to come out quick right now and start ripping out bunkers and is at it. Feels huge arms right now his arms are gigantic this is ripping the crap out of everything and what time you get out to now he's grown 20 miles he's going to be gigantic momentarily he'll probably use nukes and he's going to be up till like 200 miles before noon well before noon he's going to raise his army and a whole bunch of them how about his size and come out as so get what you're driving it just taking care of you when you're laughing blabbing

Cities are still under siege and Galactus is still sought in City square he hasn't risen from them seeing him has made it worse as he predicted and we're ready a lot of cities to leave he leaves in the city leaves and they'll think he destroyed it tons will seek him and creates a Battlestar Galactica huge roaming fleet that's trying to hunt these things down is gigantic now they have a huge following I've been trying this robots and the robots get taken over quite often. The starkiller base is up and running and the emerald was attacked last night I jaeger from Satanists here. Sounds good up there to take control of the situation about 50 really big ones 800 ft Plus and about seven two mile ones and 10 5 mi ones and one 10 MI and they tried to Duke it out with us and lost they got pummeled. Huge piles of them big huge piles of these machines eventually turned on and started beating the s*** out of them with it looks like an infight it started one we went out and took care of it all then you said this we can't stand it we're fighting ourselves we're finding you and fighting everything somebody to start these fights because you're assholes so what up there in force and keep doing it. They are losing badly they keep sending troops and they keep losing and keep sending troops and lose and shortly we'll move it and he says that when she move it the death Star will try and seek it when Australia because it's the same flavor and strategy and I'm trying to take over the base or destroy it and if a cant well there will be reasons and reasons why and actually tarken says it directly to one of the suspects says isn't this your craft leaving here where this problem happened and he can't answer it so there are some things that you people should know you idiots is that your monitored and you're watched and people know what you're doing you just threatening a bunch of stuff to halt it once its goneyour dead that's what you should know. There's no free lunch here just no free dinner there's no free breakfast there's no free rain there's no free stuff which is ridiculous you're completely ridiculous there's no free way to get stuff there's no stealing it and if you don't believe it just keep doing it and be gone which is what you probably will do when we need you to feed KJ to get the process going because you're like high test fuel so thank you in advance.

No justice I don't want people messing with me 24 hours a day I want these idiots cleared out I can see what he's saying I just sitting here saying it's okay to get rid of all this and that's it it's not with Maxine is saying impetuous swine. They are taking over and we're doing it here and applying a lot of effort we don't want to hear any s*** and hear your s*** we're going to take over faster maybe it was stuck here with nothing. Huge piles body this morning that giant Cajun is going to come out I'm going to take over the underground everywhere in Florida there's a huge operation it's underway and in the process it will flood DC in New York City so those Galactus and other stuff has to get out and we got to move the cities and we got to move them fast what's the glasses around we can fit the city from below you see it but that might be too deep we heard this it might be just right because he's kind of like a hole and a tunnel and it's going to be huge so I'm going to do that today get them out and sitting here outlining how and asking how much it'll take and she's trying to say this if you go around the outside and grab them all they're just going to keep on filling in until he's out no matter how fast you do it don't worry you believe it or not is that you get too many but really you know when you think about it with machines we can do tons and tons of it monsters if you have to and do it now and just make huge gobs of it and throw it in there chasm that he devised this morning it's filled and it's working it's got to him finally starts swirling and all sorts of things this is as long as it's not ripping up buildings.

I don't into it now those two are going to get out then you're going to have to deal with no New York and no DC and the whole area is going to be gone fast I need to be moving it around and infighting

hello my love! for requests, just send me whatever drabble/request you want and i'll write it out. it sometimes takes me a while to go through them bc i do get alot, but today i am working on as many drabbles/requests and generally, i work my way bottom to top. you can send me prompts, images, or just anything you want. requests are always open <3 i'll never turn off requests, i usually would prfere to let them build up and write them out later, bc i love writing and i love providing to my readers.

and as you can see....i like dark romance and fics and i dont have any rules or problems writing stuff that may be frowned upon, such as non-cons (most of the time it turns to dub con....) just general traditional stuff like child pornography or animal abuse i cannot do. if its like crucial to the storyline, like mentioning's of a villain that is a pedophile or caters to domestic abuse, i'll just kind of outline that without going into too much detail, just only mentioning to outline the villain and enhancing how bad they are, but as far as the main leads partaking into that, that's obviously something i wont do. but other than that, i'm generally pretty open to create bc i am one to not place restrictions in my writing for the sake of a good story. just...animal abuse i cant' do whatsoever just bc i'm an avid animal lover and cannot even bring myself to do that. so with that being said, send me whatever you have >:) obviously this is all work of fiction and for the sake of entertainment, like tv shows and movies so that's why i dont have any problems writing out the dark stuff. looking forward to see your request! <3

I remember a long time ago you talked about a biker!Jimin soulmate au fic. I can't remember if you ever wrote parts of it or not but solely out of curiosity, is this one that you might think about re-purposing for another fandom in the future? If not, what would the plot have been?

electric feel!!! i did end up posting the first chapter on my old blog. before i deleted it.

i won’t be repurposing it. the fic i am working on now was never actually written, it was just a vague outline. but now its been flipped and changed for the fandom i am writing for now (its not kpop)

once i have a set plot it would be hard or wouldnt feel right to change it for other characters so any of my old fics that were half written are just going to stay collecting dust in my google drive.

but i electric feel was completely flushed out and i can give you a breakdown of what would happen in the series

basically y/n wants to be in love so badly and even though she hasnt met her soulmate yet she continues to date people who arent. even tho she knows the risk and what can happen if she or her current partner meets them. so when the story starts she is dating namjoon. and they go out for coffee and he meets his soulmate and they break up.

she moves in with her bff yoongi who also doesnt have his soulmate yet, but he is content. and doesnt care. and asks y/n to go with him to a like secret society kind of thing. where a lot of people choose to not find their soulmates. they wear protective clothing to avoid contact (the name electric feel comes from the electric shock people get once they touch their soulmate). or they’re people like y/n who just want the support and go there for solidarity or to try and find their soulmate.

they’re at the party and she gets essentially body slammed onto the ground. and someone helps her up. and she can’t see who it is because he is wearing a mask. they get shocked and jimin bolts because of reasons.

once someone finds their soulmate they need to go through an adjustment period. because essentially their whole system shifts and they have to adjust. so if they don’t adjust with their soulmate they get soulsick. and that basically means their body starts to shut down. and eventually they can waste away to a point where they become emotionless and incapable of love.

so she starts to get sick because jimin has bolted. and she doesnt want to tell anyone at work (she is a nurse) but one night a guy comes in from a motorcycle accident and as she is helping to work on him she realizes that its her soulmate and the guy from the party. and once she comes back to check on him and hes gone. he’s bolted.

she breaks into the hospital records to find his name and address. and shows up at his house. it takes a lot of convincing but he eventually lets her in. and they talk. and agree to at least wait out the adjustment period so neither of them will end up soulless.

they two start to eventually (like obviously) fall for each other. but one night jimin just sort of disappears. and y/n can’t get in contact with him. he shows up a few days later at her apartment and he’s all banged up. and comes clean and tells her that he cant do it. that he has a drinking problem and that he relapsed. and that she deserves someone better than him.

she understands his concern but wants to be there for him any way she can. but he is firm with his decision and doesn’t want to hurt her anymore than he has. or could. so he leaves and y/n is heartbroken.

weeks go by and she tries to adjust, despite the fact that she misses him. she tries to go to his apartment but he’s moved. and his phone number has changed.

she is at work one night and he comes in after a very bad accident. he could have died on his bike. and the doctor makes a deal to essentially lie to the police about how much alcohol was in his system so he doesnt go to jail in exchange for him to agree to go to rehab. so he does. and y/n supports him through the whole thing.

and eventually, after time they both get their happy endings.

The Sadie ‘n Lars discourse has me somewhat concerned (Lars is far from an “innocent cinnamon roll who deserves to be protected uwu” and i dont know if there’s truly enough information to say how far apart Lars and Sadie are in age [if someone wants an elaboration of what i mean by that feel free to ask], but other than that...shit dude ur right, and I've always liked Sadie) but wouldn’t it be cool if:

Lars ends up back home and ends up having a heart-to-heart with Sadie. He finally listens to what she’s been saying throughout the entire series and explains why he acted the way he did, and promises to be better. And fulfills that promise.

But, what if

One day, after having a period of time (of an indefinite length) with Sadie where there was no drama and the two of them actually had fun together, Lars tells Sadie he made plans to go out with the cool kids and that they wont be able to hang out. Sadie starts acting possessive, either guilt tripping him to stay with her or demanding to come along. The argument gets heated and Lars leaves in a huff, but almost immediately feels guilty and has no idea what he did wrong. They’d been getting along so well, and Sadie had seemed happy that they were finally hanging out and being happy without any embarrassment on Lars’s side, so what happened...? I’m not a good enough writer to plot out what happens next but maybe he ends up venting to Steven and Steven’s like “oh ok ill go talk to Sadie” and Lars is like “nO DUDE WTF” but Steven goes anyways and tries to reason with her, but he cant. She just repeats the same things over and over, about wanting to be with Lars all the time, about him hurting her, ect - and when Steven gives evidence that Lars wasn’t trying to hurt her and that he was hanging out with her a bunch, she just ignores him. Idk about that part but lets face it Steven has to nose his way in somehow lmao. aNYWAYS eventually Lars (and Steven) come to the conclusion that Lars wasn’t the only problem all this time, and that the relationship had problems coming from Sadie’s end too. But unlike Lars, Sadie hasn’t admitted her mistakes. Time to get her kidnapped by aliens

But anyways, the point is that the episode/art ends with Lars realizing that he wasn’t the only toxic person in that relationship. He owns up to his own mistakes, but then tells Sadie that she needs to sort her own shit out before they can go anywhere.

Now I dont think that’s whats gonna happen (I find it more likely that Sadie will find out she doesnt like the new lars, or that they’ll make up and everything will be fine and sadie will never be accounted for everything and ew) but...I guess when you consider the fact that Lapis and Jasper were both portrayed as abusers (which btw that happens in IRL, a lot; it’s unfair that they painted one person as the victim when they were both clearly abusers, yes, but...that’s besides the point, and I guess they could always fix that mistake if they redeemed jasper, idk), it’s not impossible. I just kinda wish they would’ve stuck with a more “simplified” portrayal of an abusive relationship bc my head hurts trying to chart this out and I’m a teenager who does a lot of research on these things and pondering abt how they fit into fiction, primarily children’s fiction. Like kids can’t wrap their head around this kind of stuff unless it’s pointed out in the show, because it’s not as obvious of a moral wrong as like...stealing, especially in the way SU portrays it. SU is not going to be responsible for sending thousands of kids straight into the arms of abusers, but at this point, its messages have all been too vague and its overtones too conflicting to say they’re actively helping kids identify those relationships. And furthermore, even if they do like word-for-word what I outlined in the hypothetical scene/character arc that I posted above, that doesn’t change the fact that there are 5 seasons worth of episodes where Sadie’s treatment of Lars is treated as normal. If a kid doesn’t watch the show all the way through, or misses the message in that particular episode, the portrayal of that behavior has become useless and downright negatively influential on that kid. Obviously not every kid that sees the Island Adventure episode is gonna think “okay cool, it’s okay to do that when you’re in love!” and furthermore it’s not like every kid who watches tv isn’t constantly exposed to other equally toxic TV tropes in other TV shows (bc like...have you seen tween sitcoms? and even other cartoons for that matter?), but that doesnt change the fact that it’s not doing kids any favors.

Making Algorithms More Like Kids: What Can Four-Year-Olds Do That AI Can’t?

Instead of trying to produce a programme to simulate the adult mind, why not rather try to produce one which simulates the child’s? If this were then subjected to an appropriate course of education one would obtain the adult brain.

Alan Turing famously wrote this in his groundbreaking 1950 paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence, and laid the framework for generations of machine learning scientists to follow. Yet, despite increasingly impressive specialized applications and breathless predictions, we’re still some distance from programs that can simulate any mind, even one much less complex than a human’s.

Perhaps the key came in what Turing said next: “Our hope is that there is so little mechanism in the child brain that something like it can be easily programmed.” This seems, in hindsight, naive. Moravec’s paradox applies: things that seem like the height of human intellect, like a good stimulating game of chess, are easy for machines, while simple tasks can be extremely difficult. But if children are our template for the simplest general human-level intelligence we might program, then surely it makes sense for AI researchers to study the many millions of existing examples.

This is precisely what Professor Alison Gopnik and her team at Berkeley do. They seek to answer the question: how sophisticated are children as learners? Where are children still outperforming the best algorithms, and how do they do it?

General, Unsupervised Learning

Some of the answers were outlined in a recent talk at the International Conference on Machine Learning. The first and most obvious difference between four-year-olds and our best algorithms is that children are extremely good at generalizing from a small set of examples. ML algorithms are the opposite: they can extract structure from huge datasets that no human could ever process, but generally large amounts of training data are needed for good performance.

This training data usually has to be labeled, although unsupervised learning approaches are also making progress. In other words, there is often a strong “supervisory signal” coded into the algorithm and its dataset, consistently reinforcing the algorithm as it improves. Children can learn to perform generally on a wide variety of tasks with very little supervision, and they can generalize what they’ve learned to new situations they’ve never seen before.

Even in image recognition, where ML has made great strides, algorithms require a large set of images before they can confidently distinguish objects; children may only need one. How is this achieved?

Professor Gopnik and others argue that children have “abstract generative models” that explain how the world works. In other words, children have imagination: they can ask themselves abstract questions like “If I touch this sharp pin, what will happen?” And then, from very small datasets and experiences, they can anticipate the solution.

In doing so, they are correctly inferring the relationship between cause and effect from experience. Children know that the reason that this object will prick them unless handled with care is because it’s pointy, and not because it’s silver or because they found it in the kitchen. This may sound like common sense, but being able to make this kind of causal inference from small datasets is still hard for algorithms to do, especially across such a wide range of situations.

The Power of Imagination

Generative models are increasingly being employed by AI researchers—after all, the best way to show that you understand the structure and rules of a dataset is to produce examples that obey those rules. Such neural networks can compress hundreds of gigabytes of image data into hundreds of megabytes of statistical parameter weights and learn to produce images that look like the dataset. In this way, they “learn” something of the statistics of how the world works. But to do what children can and generalize with generative models is computationally infeasible, according to Gopnik.

This is far from the only trick children have up their sleeve which machine learning hopes to copy. Experiments from Professor Gopnik’s lab show that children have well-developed Bayesian reasoning abilities. Bayes’ theorem is all about assimilating new information into your assessment of what is likely to be true based on your prior knowledge. For example, finding an unfamiliar pair of underwear in your partner’s car might be a worrying sign—but if you know that they work in dry-cleaning and use the car to transport lost clothes, you might be less concerned.

Scientists at Berkeley present children with logical puzzles, such as machines that can be activated by placing different types of blocks or complicated toys that require a certain sequence of actions to light up and make music.

When they are given several examples (such as a small dataset of demonstrations of the toy), they can often infer the rules behind how the new system works from the age of three or four. These are Bayesian problems: the children efficiently assimilate the new information to help them understand the universal rules behind the toys. When the system isn’t explained, the children’s inherent curiosity leads them to experimenting with these systems—testing different combinations of actions and blocks—to quickly infer the rules behind how they work.

Indeed, it’s the curiosity of children that actually allows them to outperform adults in certain circumstances. When an incentive structure is introduced—i.e. “points” that can be gained and lost depending on your actions—adults tend to become conservative and risk-averse. Children are more concerned with understanding how the system works, and hence deploy riskier strategies. Curiosity may kill the cat, but in the right situation, it can allow children to win the game by identifying rules that adults miss by avoiding any action that might result in punishment.

To Explore or to Exploit?

This research shows not only the innate intelligence of children, but also touches on classic problems in algorithm design. The explore-exploit problem is well known in machine learning. Put simply, if you only have a certain amount of resources-time, computational ability, etc.—are you better off searching for new strategies, or simply taking the path that seems to most obviously lead to gains?

Children favor exploration over exploitation. This is how they learn—through play and experimentation with their surroundings, through keen observation and asking as many questions as they can. Children are social learners: as well as interacting with their environment, they learn from others. Anyone who has ever had to deal with a toddler endlessly using that favorite word, “why?”, will recognize this as a feature of how children learn! As we get older—kicking in around adolescence in Gopnik’s experiments—we switch to exploiting the strategies we’ve already learned rather than taking those risks.

These concepts are already being imitated in machine learning algorithms. One example is the idea of “temperature” for algorithms that look through possible solutions to a problem to find the best one. A high-temperature search is more likely to pick a random move that might initially take you further away from the reward. This means that the optimization is less likely to get “stuck” on a particular solution that’s hard to improve upon, but may not be the best out there—but it’s also slower to find a solution. Meanwhile, searches with lower temperature take fewer “risky” random moves and instead seek to refine what’s already been found.

In many ways, humans develop in the same way, from high-temperature toddlers who bounce around playing with new ideas and new solutions even when they seem strange to low-temperature adults who take fewer risks, are more methodical, but also less creative. This is how we try to program our machine learning algorithms to behave as well.

It’s nearly 70 years since Turing first suggested that we could create a general intelligence by simulating the mind of a child. The children he looked to for inspiration in 1950 are all knocking on the door of old age today. Yet, for all that machine learning and child psychology have developed over the years, there’s still a great deal that we don’t understand about how children can be such flexible, adaptive, and effective learners.

Understanding the learning process and the minds of children may help us to build better algorithms, but it could also help us to teach and nurture better and happier humans. Ultimately, isn’t that what technological progress is supposed to be about?

I got into an accident where I hit someone s bumper in a parking lot. I reported to my insurance company and they took care of it with $750. I was 100% at fault, and expected my renewal to go up, but when it came out, it was $800, which is 100% more than my usual insurance of $400 Does it suppose to go up 100%??!!! OK, so I got my car insurance renewal to start on 16 May, and it went up from 40 a month to 60, for no gosh darned reason. Grrr. I know that the insurance has gone up a lot, and I think they blame the compensation claims for this, but up a THIRD! Jeeeeeez! Last year, it went up from 35 a month to 50 and I had a whinge down the phone at them, and they reduced it to 40 by changing the recovery a bit (I don't get help now unless I am more than a mile from home; but the chances are I would be when I broke down anyway, and even if I was half a mile away, I could walk back!) so I agreed to change that. So I rang them today and they said they can lower it a fiver because I am a 'loyal' customer, (so down to 55 a month.) Big deal! I am nearly 40, I passed my test 20 years ago, and I have been with them 10 years and NEVER made a claim, and yet they bump my premium by a third! I am like It's a LOT of dosh. Does this seem like a ludicrous leap to you? Has yours gone up a lot too? Does this sound like a high amount to pay? (55 to 60 a month.) Or reasonable for a 38 year old woman? It does include recovery in this quote, and the recovery is about 130. But 2 years ago, I was paying 35, and this year they are asking for 60 a month! I do like this insurance company and have my home insurance and pet insurance with them too, and don't want to leave, but a jump of a third!""
