All the jokes about Ken and horses are good but I just wanna say it's such a good parallel to how actual young men get swept into misogyny and the patriarchy.

Like they're told to believe it means men get to be cool and manly and have this power but with that comes extremely rigid commands of what they can be as a man and a cycle of self hatred for never matching those gender roles perfectly. Patriarchy tells men that if they just do exactly what is expected of them, then they get all the "cool stuff" that comes with. That doesn't work though when there's only a small group that actually gets that power, but men will keep trying to fit into those roles in hopes that they can.

In the end there are no horses or the myth men are told, it's just endless cycles of self hatred and ingroup fighting.

i love how similar the fall guy and bullet train are because david leitch i'm perceiving you so hard. i'm seeing how you shape your ideal version of masculinity and present the emotional action hero as sexy and capable and not at all undermined by his depth of feeling but made stronger for it. it's beautiful and subversive and quite frankly it's gay as hell. genuinely i find it extremely interesting how he handles this balance so gracefully in a way that makes colt and ladybug funny, real, and desirable to both the men and the women in the audience

Today marks 500 days sober. I wasn’t thinking about this milestone coming up, but my sobriety has been something I have been battling with recently, so it’s come at the perfect time.

Battling feels like the correct choice of words here, because it hasn’t been a struggle, it was been a fight. I have fought to stay sober, whilst every part of my brain screamed at me that drinking would make this easier. And it would, in the short term, which is the shit thing. All of this month would feel easier if I could find myself at the bottom of a bottle. Facing my dad’s birthday on Thursday, alone, would feel easier if I were working my way through the cocktail menu. But then everything else would be harder. As a person who didn’t think they’d make it past 23, short term pleasure vs long term problems wasn’t something that bothered me much, nor did I spend too much time thinking about what future me would have to deal with. But I’m still here, against all odds, 27, with a lot of really important reasons to stick around, and the future is much more significant to me than it once was.

Anyway, today I have been sober for 500 days and I’m really proud of myself. It’s been hard, it will be hard in the future, and that’s okay. One step at a time. I got this.

I love how the Barbie movie did not confirm or really make implications about our Barbie, or any other Barbie's, sexuality. She's not romantically or sexually interested in Ken, but it's not explained by her being a lesbian, or ace, or any other thing - she just simply isn't interested in him. No further explanation is required from her and she doesn't owe him her attraction - even if "anywhere else" he'd be a 10.

Image going to see the Barbie movie with Bakugo he didn’t want to see but you did so obviously he agreed. You grew up with Barbie so you were so excited! This was your childhood in real life. So of course you picked out matching outfits for you Bakugo.*without telling him* but you spent so much money on these so now he has to wear it. He put up a fight until you look like you were gonna cry.

Once you actually made it to the movie theater you got popcorn and your favorite candy/drink. You made sure you got the best seat in the house. Bakugo laughed more then he’ll admit. You both loved it.

But we both know on the way home y’all we’re singing the whole sound track.

I don’t usually make posts like this, but I’ve been seeing a lot of anti-intellectual junk lately, and I really think we need to put the word “pretentious” up on a shelf until people learn what it actually means.

It doesn’t describe someone who likes artsy-fartsy deep meaning media. People who are pretentious are fake. They’re posers trying to be sophisticated and unique, not like other girls. They pretend to only like stuff they think will make them sound cool when they talk about it. They want to act like they know something you don’t, and they want attention for it.

By definition, if you genuinely enjoy something, you can’t be pretentious. If it resonates with you, and you analyze it, and you don’t care what people think, that’s the polar opposite, actually. If you love obscure experimental prog music, if you watch underground high concept indie films through English teacher eyes, if you spend hours in a modern art museum reading each piece as a vessel for storytelling, if your backpack’s full of poetry books that inspire you, if you play underrated games that were someone’s passion project, if you have an interest in studying the classics or the masters, you are not pretentious.

Of course, some people just don’t like some stuff, and that’s fine, but that’s not what this is about. Don’t let anti-intellectuals shame you for enjoying things just because your interests are inaccessible to them, because they refuse to be brave and put effort into critical thinking. You’re not stuck up for refusing to overlook the craft of artists.

Barbie was a fun movie, but it is essentially an advertisement going over superficial third wave feminist talking points from 2014 and essentially argues that "it's not the system that needs to change, but the people who work at the top of the system." I'm going to fully write down my thoughts about it later, but I'm a bit disheartened at the number of people who are taking this as a Great Feminist Piece when it's really just a shallow expression of "wow sexism is bad" paid for and funded by a massive corporation (that would LOVE it if you bought their merch btw). ESPECIALLY disheartened by people who view critiques of the movie as made solely by anti-fun men who hate feminism. Babes, maybe stop sucking off a corporation that wants to package feminism in a cute pink box for you to uncritically consume, and instead consider that if this movie is supposed to be political commentary, then you should treat it and critique it like political commentary.
