In response to the BAFTA TV nominations specifically, but also in general:

It never occurred to me before that awards categories for acting are a bit outdated. Usually there are separate awards for male and female actors, which is great if a man and a woman are in the lead roles, but not so great if there are two men, or two women, or how do you even deal with a nonbinary actor?

Of course more than one actor of the same gender from the same show or movie can be nominated, but then they're competing against each other. It doesn't seem fair that (for example) two male lead actors who gave an incredible paired performance can't both win an award, whereas a male actor and a female actor in the same situation can.

Maybe there should be a pairs category? But a new "special" category wouldn't have the cachet of the main one, and it would make the awards show take longer, and nobody wants that.

Maybe the categories shouldn't be separated by gender, and then two winners would be chosen from each combined pool? But that would probably end up reducing the number of female winners overall, because that sort of thing generally does. Or there would still be a lot of pressure to pick one male and one female winner.

I have no idea, I just thought it was an interesting (and unfortunate) problem.
