Belle thinks nothing of being alone with him. Propriety has been pressed upon her by her station, but Australia is hot and eyes grow heavy and sightless to certain things in the haze. 

She’s learning about the human body, but not how anyone might think. Though she has to admit doing surgery feels heady. Even the singular act of witnessing makes her skin itch, makes her remember all the tricks to keep poise that a governess teaches young girls. That this must be what coming together feels like, at least she hopes it does. It would make it thought more interesting.

“Surgery is playing god,” Dr. Dawkins said to her once. 

She remembers that day when it’s time to bring the stethoscope to her chest and listen, again, to the explosive pumping away inside her. She has no qualms of playing god. Self preservation overrides any fear of retribution from above. 

Either way, she’s gone. 

So she goes to the hospital and gives them all her knowledge and tries to take all of theirs. On most days, that means she’s with Dr. Dawkins. The nature of their work means she’s alone and close to him.

She’s felt his breath against the back of her neck as he guided her hand with a scalpel. Felt it against her forehead as he leaned in to tell her good job or sod off or to mop herself if she wanted it done. As long as he’s teaching her, she doesn’t mind. She’ll keep coming back.

There’s a part of her that finds comfort in it, but that part sounds a bit too much like Fanny after reading a trite novel of romance. Belle doesn’t think about it during the day.

Nighttime is a different story.
