Cagayan de Oro Business Spotlight: Brief Insights from Local Entrepreneurs (Part 1.2)
(Here we go again...)
Sploop! VR Experience Theme Park:
Sploop VR is a great example of a business that knows how to stand out in a crowded market. While World of Fun might be their competitor, Sploop uses unique experiences like 9D and 12D effects to give customers something they can't find anywhere else. They also understand the importance of timing. School seasons and weather can impact their foot traffic, so they plan around holidays to maximize sales.
The insight? Sometimes, success is all about offering something fresh and keeping a close eye on customer trends.
THEFACESHOP Limketkai:
For THEFACESHOP, customer loyalty is the name of the game. Their ability to keep customers coming back for Korean skincare solutions, even in a competitive market, is a testament to their product quality. They also know that timing is crucial, as they see sales peak during December.
The big takeaway here? Consistency in delivering quality and understanding your customer’s needs goes a long way in maintaining business success.
Onesimus Limketkai:
Onesimus stands out by staying true to their roots. They offer high quality barongs and suits, and they know that their materials and brand heritage appeal to a specific customer base, especially the Maranao community. Although they face picky customers, their patience and quality keep them ahead.
The insight from Onesimus is that knowing your niche and serving it well can build a strong, lasting reputation.
Ms. Crafts & Accessories:
Ms. Crafts & Accessories shows that creativity is key to success, especially in a business that’s all about design. They don’t have direct competition, and their unique, personally crafted products make them a go-to spot for students. Plus, their sales increase when events are held nearby, which they cleverly capitalize on.
The insight here is that having a creative approach and adapting to your environment can make your business stand out, even in a small market.
UniSilver Jewelry - Limketkai Branch:
One key takeaway from UniSilver Jewelry is how much they value customer service. Their focus on offering lifetime cleaning and training staff to provide top notch service sets them apart from competitors. Despite some challenges like stock shortages, their ability to retain loyal customers through their "Loyalty Card Discount" shows that good relationships with customers are more important than just having the most stock.
The lesson here? It’s not just about what you sell, but how you treat your customers.
That's all for the first week's interview, see ya next time!

Cagayan de Oro Business Spotlight: Interviews and Insights of Local Entrepreneurs
Welcome to our new blog series, where we dive into the vibrant business landscape of Cagayan de Oro City.
Join us as we chat with local business owners, revealing the strategies, challenges, and successes that fuel their everyday operations. Keep reading to discover the stories behind these businesses and gain valuable insights into what makes them thrive.
UniSilver Jewelry - Limketkai Branch:
UniSilver Jewelry's LimKetKai branch has been around since 2000, focusing on silver jewelry. Their main rival is Silver Works, but UniSilver stands out with its top-notch jewelry and free lifetime cleaning service. They cater mainly to middle-class customers and are known for their friendly staff, great service, and tidy store environment. One of their challenges is occasionally running low on stock for certain pieces, and their sales usually peak during the “Ber” months (September to December). Right now, the branch’s key goal is to consistently hit their sales targets. They rely on their “Loyalty Card Discount” as their main marketing strategy, and they track its success by checking if they meet their monthly sales goals.
UniSilver Jewelry doesn’t rely on any specific systems to run its operations. When they need to hire new staff, they simply post job openings online, review the applicants' resumes, and pick the best candidates based on their skills and experience. New hires go through training, and every employee gets evaluated every two months to see where they can improve. Complaints from employees are uncommon because the company aims to provide excellent benefits. For handling customer complaints, every employee receives training in customer service and learns how to handle tough situations to prevent issues from escalating. The branch stays up-to-date with the latest trends by designing jewelry that matches current styles. The branch's biggest successes include consistently hitting their sales targets each month and keeping their staff satisfied and well-managed. According to the manager we spoke with, the key to managing a jewelry branch is being ready for unexpected challenges, especially with customer inquiries. She highlighted the importance of learning from customer feedback and using those lessons to grow.
Sploop! VR Exprience Theme Park:
Sploop VR Theme Park, the first VR-focused arcade in Limketkai, Cagayan de Oro, opened its doors on December 20, 2022. They specialize in virtual reality gaming and immersive experiences. Their main rival in the area is World of Fun. What sets Sploop VR apart is their use of advanced 9D and 12D audio and visual effects, making their VR experiences truly unique.
Their main customers are students, Gen Z, and families. The eye-catching, modern design of their facilities, along with fun promotions like ₱299 for 2 hours, helps draw in and keep customers. However, they do face challenges during school seasons and natural events like floods, which can reduce customer numbers. Their busiest times are usually holidays, Christmas, and summer. To hit their sales goals, they use flyers and promotions and track success by monitoring the increase in regular customers. They also use an online system for managing operations. HR handles hiring and training staff, and employee performance is judged based on customer satisfaction, feedback, and performance reviews. Even though they’ve only had one customer complaint out of 100—about the queue rather than the service—they continually update their VR equipment and games at their main branch. The biggest wins for the branch are keeping current customers and attracting new ones. The manager notes that running a branch like Sploop VR requires patience, teamwork, flexibility, and hard work to ensure everything runs smoothly and customers stay satisfied.
THEFACESHOP Limketkai:
The Face Shop Limketkai focuses on skincare products, and its main competitor is Watsons, since both are well-known for their high-quality skincare offerings.
The Face Shop is unique because it focuses solely on Korean skincare products. Its main customers are young adults and middle-aged people. They keep their customers coming back by consistently offering high-quality products, which leads to repeat purchases. While they have a loyal following, there are occasional slow days, though sales usually surge in December, just like with the other businesses we've discussed. The store aims to hit a monthly sales target of ₱500,000. Reaching this goal is a big win, especially since it means more people are coming into the store.
Onesimus Limketkai:
Onesimus specializes in high-quality men’s barongs and formal wear. At this location, their main competitor is Arrow. What makes Onesimus stand out is not just their excellent products, but also their use of premium fabrics for their suits and their identity as a local brand. They primarily cater to Muslim Maranaos.
A common issue they face is dealing with picky customers who ask a lot of questions that aren’t really necessary. Their sales usually pick up around holidays, particularly on Independence Day. As time goes on, their brand is gaining more recognition for its quality compared to other brands.
Ms. Crafts & Accessories:
They launched their business on August 28, focusing mainly on crafts and accessories. According to them, they don’t have any direct competitors nearby. What sets their products apart is that all the designs on items like coffee mugs and keychains are made by them personally.
Their main customers are students, and they draw them in with the lively atmosphere of their store. Sales usually pick up during local events, and they’re planning to expand their business soon.
They use machines to help create their products, and they haven’t received any customer complaints so far, indicating good quality. The owner also highlighted that having a creative mindset is crucial for running a crafts and accessories business, as it greatly enhances the design process.
As we finish our look at local businesses in Cagayan de Oro, it’s clear that each one, whether it’s been around for a while or just starting out, adds something special to the city’s lively business scene. From unique designs to outstanding customer service, these businesses are thriving by facing challenges head-on and seizing new opportunities.
We hope this glimpse into our local shops has shown you how diverse and dynamic they are, and inspired you to support and appreciate all the effort that goes into running them.
