EMOTIONAL RYUJI RANT !!!

keep in mind that some of these statements are generalized and blanket statements. Everyone goes through recovery and trauma differently and this does not define the Recovery Experience. This comes from my own experience and why i can relate to Ryuji.

I feel like, along side Ann, Ryuji and his story is often forgotten — even to Atlus — and he just becomes the Comedic Relief, The MCs Best Friend, The Meathead and it’s super upsetting for me because his story is the one that stayed with me the most since my first play through of the game in 2018.

Ryuji is called “annoying” often because of his joking nature, it’s hard for him to have a moment of seriousness and when that seriousness is directed at him (i.e that argument in september that leads to Okumura’s palace) he gets defensive and angry, when he does he gets treated as a meathead with no scope of emotion.

Must i remind you that Ryuji is a survivor of abuse. His father was a raging alcoholic that beat both him and his mother and then eventually his father was no longer in the picture. The way he acts is all out of subconscious self preservation.

When living with an abusive parent or partner, any emotion from the victim is considered a threat to the abuser, any form of taking up space is disrespect, any mention that they have these emotions is considered an attack against the abuser and thus the victim will no longer bring up how they feel, they will become uncomfortable in serious situations out of fear that they will be harmed if it’s given attention. It’s only understandable that Ryuji gets defensive or brushes everything off as a joke — because that is the only way he can see himself surviving.

Ryuji’s story is a story of surviving abuse and learning how to live with your past while focusing on the future. Ryuji’s story is about trauma recovery.

I understand why Ryuji gets angry easily. Everyone recovers differently, but for me at least my recovery is often going through a lot of anger, anger that the people that were supposed to care for me didn’t, anger that no one noticed that these things are happening, anger that i never spoke up about it and asked for help until much later on. That anger can also manifest from a place of fear, which can also be seen in Ryuji; he’s afraid of being like his father, of turning to the things that his father did and ultimately continuing the cycle of abuse and possibly generational trauma. Anger is a large part of recovery and to say that his outbursts are annoying is ultimately ignoring that he is a survivor of parental abuse and that is disrespectful.

Ryuji deserved a better confidant arc and, in general, better writers. His story — other than his experience with Kamoshida — is barely mentioned and it feels as though Atlus is expecting its audience to understand every face of Ryuji’s personality through one small sprinkle of “my dad abused my mother and i” that is rarely spoken about again, which is not possible unless someone has lived through a similar situation.

Ryuji deserved better and i will forever live by that statement.

I haven't played the game but based on your posts it felt like there were a lot of PegoRyu interactions. Which was your favorite (if any)?

I guess i went insane with the P5/pegoryu spam in general... i can't control the hyperfixation 💀 but yeah, there is a LOT of interactions cause the two are best friends and Ryuji is one of the first characters the protagonist meets! So it's hard to choose a favorite interaction cause there is a lot throughout the games such...

But maybe in P5R in Ryuji's confidant cause of how he thanks Joker for staying with him and not abandoning him... tldr of the story, Ryuji was without a real friend for quite a long time, so you know he really meant that. plus how he says things in his confidant like how he feels free when talking to him and how he's glad he finally found a place to belong and that there was place for Joker too... right next to him... like bro what do you mean?? What did you mean by that?? 😭

Akira being like, obsessed w loyalty, but having it as a positive(ish) trait is so fun to me. He doesnt outright say it or ever ask for it, but theres like an unspoken bond between the thieves and himself. He asks for it (demands, really) because he gives it in return. Its the classic ‘ride or die’ mentality; he demands trust and loyalty bc he 100% trusts his team. He would not have baited himself into what would be considered his literal death if he was not COMPLETELY and UTTERLY faithful to his team and the cause. He trusted them to fulfill their end of the bargain no matter how difficult that wouldve been for them. And because of their mutual faith in each other, leader to team and team to leader, they all managed to make it out and live another school year.

He has very little regard for his life but hes not necessarily reckless. Hes calculated. And while hes a bit out of sorts in the beginning with all of these new ideas and concepts, he quickly finds his footing later in the year. And bc he is assembling a team of people who are loyal to Him, he can afford to be loyal right back to them. He can afford to be risky if the risk is mitigated by having his team follow up on his actions. This team has to run like a well oiled machine; any hiccups will get the rest of the team caught or worse; hurt or killed.

Ryuji inadvertently sets this trend, bc he is Ride or Die at heart and he somewhat influences Akira on this matter. And its why he is so reluctant to truly incorporate Goro onto the team (at first). Goro IMMEDIATELY clocks Akiras leadership as something heavier than simply ‘i lead this group to keep everyone on the same page’, but he wrongly assumes Akira has some sort of Thing about power. Theres no real power trip; he is not okay with limiting his teams voices on any matter. His ideas are not the end all, be all of any plan; hes Not Shido. I can imagine how tough Saes Palace was for everyone, but they needed to have unwavering faith in each other to pull off such a mindblowing plan.

I dunno where else im going w this, i just like thinking of Goro feeling some kinda way about Akira (and the thieves) unanimously declaring him as the leader of the thieves fully knowing what shady things theyve done up until this point. Someone who claims to change peoples hearts is deciding who gets to keep their free will or not, and to have a team basically say ‘yes hes our leader and we would die for him’ does NOT look good to anyone! Especially to someone who is quite literally killing people on behalf of someone Very Bad! Who then Dies for it!

Seeing your childhood friend/crush Riyuji for the first time after moving away

The two of you met during elementary school

You both became fast friends, spending a lot of time together

You looked past his rough personality and bad reputation, which he really appreciates

Your friendship continues until middle school

That's when you and your family moved away, and you were upset that you wouldn't be able to see Riyuji anymore

But you did promise him to keep in touch

He was happy that you were adjusting well, but he still missed you

Though it was upsetting, Ryuji had come to terms with the fact that you most likely wouldn't be moving back

That is until Highschool started

He had been waiting for the train

That's when, to his shock, he saw someone who looked a lot like you

He thought it was just a coincidence until you spotted him

Excited to see your childhood friend again, you ran up to him

That's when he finally realized that it was you and you tackle him into a hug

The two of you never stopped being close, so seeing each other again just felt natural

The two of you start spending a lot of time together, even having some of the same classes

One day, he invites you to get food and you're more than happy to accept

especially since you've secretly had a huge crush on him

During your meal, he finally tells you about his feelings

And he's happy to hear that you feel the same

oh, man...i guess it was uh. south park? or fruits basket? the first fanfiction i ever wrote was a crossover between those two things. i can't believe i'm making this information public but. well. there it is

brotps, huh...the first one that comes to mind is sam and rowena (from spn obviously), i don't really ship them romantically but i love their scenes together and i loved watching them slowly build trust over the course of rowena's time on the show and i wish she had taught him more witchcraft :(

another one is vash and wolfwood from trigun, i actually do like them romantically but they're not my primary ship (looking at you, plantcest) so i really enjoy them as besties. honestly vash and meryl too, give that boy more friends please

this last one is a weird one but. shen qingqiu and shang qinghua from the scum villain's self-saving system. they are brothers in isekai and i love watching them bicker and deny their feelings for their respective hunky demon beaus. they're just hilarious together

special mention to rinne and himeru enstars i have a lot i could say about them probably but i can't. i can't do that here so i will just leave it at that
