We all saw the post about how insane the boiling rock episodes are from Hakoda's perspective but what about Chit Sang
Like imagine you're a notorious fire nation criminal, you've been in prison for it for about a decade. You like provoking guards, even though it ends with you in a cooler most of the time. You've spent a few years trying to come up with an escape plan but everything you can come up with ends with you falling into a boiling lake so you kind of give up.
Then after having spent the night in a cooler again you walk across the main hall and hear this young man wearing a guard uniform talking about using that same fucking cooler as a boat to go across the boiling lake. Of course you force them to let you join. The plan fails miserably and you end up getting caught. You don't tell the warden anything. You find the teenaged guard again, and now another adult has finally joined, turns out that's the kid's dad. Whomever this kid's dad is must have done something real bad to end up in this prison, and looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree seeing his kid is impersonating a guard to free them all, but you don't really have time to figure it all out. You get a new plan, you capture the warden and make it to the gondola. This kid has some serious balls. Halfway there though the gondola gets stopped and the princess of the fire nation runs up to you guys. These kids pissed off the royal family and you're really reconsidering joining these guys because who the fuck pisses off the royal family and lives? Great, you think, that's it, but no those three fucking teenagers you're escaping with all climb the gondola in order to fight her. Absolutely insane. Miraculously you make it off, and escape on the princess's very own war balloon. Again, these kids have some balls.
Then finally you fly away from the prison you spent a decade in, having your first taste of freedom. You ask these kids where we're going and the one in the guard uniform mentions they're flying to the western airtemple ruins to join his friends. Alright fair enough, you don't really get why teenagers would be spending their times in those ruins. In the meantime you've realized the scarred kid is the banished prince of the fire nation, no wonder his sister came chasing after your group. After a few hours you land and you finally set your feet on free ground for the first time in years. You get ready for introductions and the first person to walk up to you is a twelve year old bald kid with tattoos who introduces himself as the fucking Avatar. You accidentally joined team Avatar as they're trying to end the war.
#like how absolutely insane must that be#imagine you escape prison w a bunch of people and one of them goes 'btw that's my friend jesus over there'#avatar the last airbender#atla#avatar#aang#avatar aang#chit sang#the boiling rock#sokka#zuko#prince zuko

SecUnit portrayals in media, ranked from most realistic to least.
To Amena. Subject: Media watchnight recommendations (under requested parameters) Note: None of these are good and I can recommend many better suggestions without SecUnits.
Hunt for the Rain Opal
Premise: Adventure/heist
A group of ragtag human explorers are trying to find an ancient gem rumoured to grant wishes. The protagonists have the only map, but a corporate also on the hunt for the gem has claimed the entire site (without telling her superiors the real reason) and is searching.
Corporation has multiple SecUnits on patrol. The writers have clearly done research, as on-screen SecUnits are noted with the correct type of weapon systems, accurate patrol routines, and reasonable armour despite clearly being human actors. The scene where one of the heroes accidentally wanders into a Security Ready Room and five SecUnits are revealed to be in the cubicles is mostly realistic, although likely she would not escape as easily.
Magic wish-granting gems are not usually cargo protected by SecUnits but then (a) the corporation as a whole was unaware of the gem, just the evil supervisor, and the site itself was believable; and (b) I honestly don’t know half the stuff I have been contracted to protect. The SecUnits are not rogue, merely employed by a corporate, and as such act entirely believably.
2. RihaniLane Street
Premise: The interrelated lives of people who work along a specific station ring geographical location.
The main story is unrelated to SecUnits, but the third season arc includes a mysterious stranger who is friends with a ComfortUnit. After one of the ComfortUnit’s clients breaks its fingers, the mysterious stranger follows the client home and murders him, revealing itself to be a SecUnit.
Points are given to the show for it being made explicit that the SecUnit is not visiting ComfortUnit for sexual interactions, but that it thinks its specific ComfortUnit friend is the only being on the station that can carry a conversation. Reasonable, but the SecUnit clearly did not try to talk to the dressmaker character who is also excellent.
(spoilers) ComfortUnit is eventually killed in an unpreventable accident, and SecUnit decided to murder every human character on the station in retaliation (reasons not strictly clear other than that murdering is the default state of all SecUnits, but this is also clearly emotional-based and one of very few shows that uses SecUnits as a character, even a villain, instead of a prop).
(Note: Cannot watch this onboard Perihelion. After the SecUnit was defeated and blown into pieces, ART spent eight minutes with 79.25 % of its processing ‘running diagnostics’ and briefly lost control of some temperature gauges, which was unfortunate as Turi was attempting to shower. I have had to finish the following seasons off-ship.)
Also, the show had the SecUnit’s eyes turn red whenever it killed anyone. Unrealistic but it looked very cool.
3. Valorous Defenders
Premise: Daily life on a planetary-defence-ship.
Mostly a good show. The SecUnit arc started at episode 27 through to 41, in which planetary government decided to hire better security (after a previous arc had involved several children being taken hostage in order to force the ship’s captain to allow an enemy territory temporary access to a planet’s resource-rich locations).
The first two episodes of the SecUnits on ships were realistic. One of the characters admitted she was creeped out by them while walking past; the SecUnit’s head tilted slightly to watch her and she apologised, sounding genuine. SecUnits do not react to such comments and also people do not genuinely apologise.
Also introduces phrases such as “I am functioning optimally,” which are unlikely to be in a buffer.
A SecUnit inevitably goes rogue. Unclear if it had been rogue for a while and was just waiting for an opportunity to attack? Planetary government comes to the ship to see how new security is working. SecUnit proceeds to free/hack other SecUnits and they take crew/government hostage. Story climax is them taking over the ship while only a handful of the human protagonists are still free.
Earlier episodes established the fleet had specific unrealistic hand weapons that at highest level can drill through rock easily, so it is acceptable that single shots to the chestplate would kill the attacking SecUnits. I am less accepting of why the SecUnits continued the same technique of charging down the hall when it was plainly obvious that the human heroes were able to do this. There were better strategies.
However, the final fight scene between the original rogue-SecUnit and the remaining crew was excellent. The cinematography of the shattered armour worked very well.
4. Child’s View
Premise: A young girl witnesses a crime, and her family has to protect her when the criminals come after her.
The crime lord is able to hire SecUnits, which are portrayed by humanform bots. I did not realise they were meant to be SecUnits until three episodes after they were revealed (admittedly, the characters did not know what they were either).
The actual actions/buffer phrases were accurate. This makes it more annoying as it means the writers did detailed research and still decided on humanform bots.
The show does get points for the competency of the parents and older children.
5. The Wilted Trees
Premise: Irrelevant.
In the second episode the doctor has sex with what is implied to be a human bodyguard, but is revealed at the end of the episode to be a SecUnit. This is anatomically impossible and also no SecUnit would be interested.
(Bodyguard/SecUnit was also shown eating food that same episode. Also impossible and gross.)
I deleted it from my storage and if you decide to watch it you will have to search it yourself as I will not help you find it.
REPLY: AMENA Is there anything when you’re not supposed to cheer when the SecUnits die? SECUNIT: … In Medics of The Station the SecUnits are non-rogue and are trying to defend their hospital when the villains kill them all to take the humans hostage. This is considered a concern as it shows how dangerous the villain is and how much trouble the humans are in. The SecUnits were only in the serial for a few minutes of the first episode and I did not think it counted as what you requested. AMENA: Right. Okay. You said you had other, good media recommendations. What do you suggest? SECUNIT: File: recommended media (92 suggestions) AMENA: I know you probably can make that list that fast but I’m pretty sure you just had it ready. You’re joining us for media night tomorrow, right? SECUNIT: Maybe. AMENA: We’ll make sure there’s a separate chair not touching anyone saved for you.
#murderbot#the murderbot diaries#murderbot diaries#tmbd#murderbot fanfic#murderbot diaries fanfiction#look idk what this is. i was just having fun considering all the different types of media secunits are probably in#like surely some of the stuff isn't about evil secunits being rogue.#some of them have to be about non-evil secunits doing their evil jobs#a prison heist movie where the heroes have to escape secunit guards.#the guards are doing their job perfectly well and at no point go rogue. they're just still the villains

my opinion on the question of "were malcolm and leandra bad parents" is, as ever, "without a doubt, but you would be too in that situation" lol
#was it fucked up that leandra took out her grief on hawke and potentially carver and that malcolm didn't pay enough attention to carver#nd the general enforcement of certain roles on all of them?#i mean yeah pretty unquestionably. arguing against that being fucked up would be weird.#However. if You had run away from everything you had ever known and neither of you had been poor before#and one of you had just escaped from from a cult prison and at least one of your kids was also at danger from that same cult prison.#then i do not think you would do well either.#also if you make out malcolm to be a better parent than leandra you should be put down like a dog. 👍.#malcolm hawke#leandra hawke#da#two#01

Nezha 2 spoilers - on the character of Sheng Gongbao.
More on Sheng Gongbao, because I think what the movie did in introducing this classic antagonist's parent and kid brother may feel really random at first, but totally recontextualsies him to be (1) an even closer foil to Ao Bing and (2) a new foil to Nezha.
Ao Bing
In Nezha 1, Shen Gongbao explains his nature to Ao Bing so he could share the similarities of their situations: that he is a leopard demon, and demons suffer the same disrepute and disadvantage of dragons in the world of cultivation. That's why he did all this scheming from Ao Bing's birth to set him on a path that can diverge from his own - so he can prepare his disciple to advance where he can't - so Ao Bing can climb higher on the cultivation ladder. Shen Gongbao would benefit from Ao Bing's advancement as the master who trained, raised, and sponsored him to advance on the celestial stage. Ao Bing's father and people would also benefit from Ao Bing's ascension.
The foil Shen Gongbao plays for Ao Bing is being a demon - underpriviledged, undesired, having to struggle and claw his way in everything, being twice as good and yet not good enough, all because of what they are and how they were born. But he's known to Ao Bing only as his master and senior, someone who understands how the world works and whom taught Ao Bing his martial arts and magic.
In Nezha 2, the characters Sheng Zhengdao, the father, and Sheng Xiaobao, the kid brother, are introduced. This immediately changes the reading of Shen Gongbao. Not only is he a master, senior and an 'adult' in the complicated and cruel cultivation world - but he is also a son. Not only is he a son, there is an intricate backstory about what kind of son he is - he's the son who left his home and backwater town to go to celestial university, he's the first in the family to be accepted into the Chan Sect, the son who achieved human form, the over-achieving son, the son with a career, the son who made it, the absolute pride of the family. The eldest son who's family think he is living it up.
He is..........decidedly not. This is where the 'demon' storyline comes back: he has hit wall after wall. He's done dirty quid pro quo. He's been decieved, used, and even cowed by the system. One can't be treated fairly as a demon. Since he cannot make it any further by himself, he's resorted to relying on Ao Bing.
However, Sheng Gongbao's new role as a 'son' now paints him in an interesting light to both Ao Bing and Nezha. We instantly see that his motivation isn't just about feeling oppressed as a demon and wanting to be recognised for his merits. There is also clearly some insane filial piety driving him - because his position and ascention is supposed to benefit his kid brother and aging father back home! He is not just doing it for himself. He did all that dirty quid pro quo, being used as a tool, cowed by the system....because he needed to be the good son for his family. Because the truth is he has not made it at all. But if only he trains the perfect disciple, more perfect than himself...if only he gets him accepted into the celestial word...if only Ao Bing becomes a god of the Fengshen Bang...if Sheng Gongbao is reocognised as one of the 12 Golden Gods.........
On and on. His foil to Ao Bing as a son adds an extra dimension to Nezha 1. Ao Bing trained his whole life (being given the advantage of being the 'Yang pill') to advance his father's and people's position. To the point of being convinced, even if for a moment, that levelling Chentang Guan and killing all the people to keep the shameful secret of his dragon nature, was the only way forward...This now sounds very similar to his master. This is the solution his trusted, experienced master sold him. In Nezha 2, we learn Shen Gongbao has done terrible things for the celestial Wuliang (his senior cultivation brother)...it follows he would unload that same treacherous cycle onto Ao Bing.
2. Nezha
In a broad sense, Sheng Gongbao as the son becomes 'young,' a former protagonist himself, the hero of his own story, with his own parents and brother to appease. What I found endlessly interesting, is that with this new role, Shen Gongbao explicitly becomes a foil to Nezha as well. But the specific foil to Nezha in this case is 'being a son who will go on a total rampage out of love for his parents/family.'
With the knowledge of his parent's 'deaths,' Nezha goes on a total rampage out of love for his parents and the pain of losing them, that ends in beating up dragons and locking them in a huge magic furnace, completely playing into the hands of the evil celestial Wuliang. When our hero Nezha mitakenly fights the Eastern Dragon King Ao Guang, with the threat of his unfinished flesh body being disintegrated (he's not ready to fight in that condition yet!) - what does he say? He says "I don't care if I'll die, so long as I kill you!" The urge to avenge his parents is stronger than his self-preservation. But it's a twist. His parents are alive!
In the furnace scene, Nezha is offered a chance to save his parents who are getting cooked into cultivation pills by Wuliang. To accept a pill that makes him lose his memory and fall under the control of Wuliang. But Nezha's mother bats that thing out of Wuliang's hands, that's stupid and her son will never be a puppet for nefarious gods! Nezha, in the end, comes from a loving and supportive family who knows and understand him. They accept him for who he is. They would never stand for it. And so Nezha is protected from being manipulated.
Upon the Chentang Guan plot twist, it's revealed Shen Gongbao actually has the same reaction Nezha has when he thinks his family has died. Except for the point that his kid brother really does die - right in front of him! After whisking away Nezha's parents, Sheng Gongbao steps out again to the war-torn Chentang Guan, to fight off a thousand demons and the three traitor dragons. All by himself. There's dialogue, Nezha's parents ask Master Shen Gongbao what is he doing - where is going - why doesn't he take shelter with them?! And Shen Gongbao answers with bitter acceptance, "What's the point? My family's gone." And he goes out to fight. To take a last stand. To die.
Going back to Nezha, doesn't that reveal Sheng Gongbao's deepest motivations as the same as our hero's? He wasn't really doing it - all of it - entirely for himself. Now that his father and kid brother are dead, there is no reason to strive further. Shen Gongbao can let go of being one of the 12 Golden Gods or whatever. He's going to go out into danger, satisfy the urge to avenge his father and brother, and die.
Which takes me to the very delicious, delicious, diabolical end credits scene. The villainous Wuliang goes to a terrible prison where Shen Gongbao and his barely-ok father are alive. In a scene that totally parallels Nezha's choice in the furnace, he presents the same offer to Shen Gongbao. Accept a curse on his mind and body that will enslave him to Wuliang in exchange for his father's life.
But Shen Gongbao doesn't have the same honesty, understanding, protection from his father...because all this time he has been away from home...not returning because he hasn't made it...his father under the impression he is living it up as a celestial...his father not even conscious...
His kid brother died.
He has just this one family member left.
A person he was supposed to be doing all this for, to make proud.
A person he was ready to get revenge and die for.
After all he has already done - what is a little curse on Sheng Gongbao for the benefit of his father?
#nezha#nezha 2#哪吒#哪吒2#哪吒之魔童闹海#sheng gongbao#Where Nezha escapes the oblivion pill in the furnace - Shen Gongbao will willingly take on the curse in the prison.#Anyways.#Get ready for Mind-Controlled angst in Nezha 3!!!!#*UNGODLY LEOPARD SCREECH*#I am ready for the horrible awful scene where Ao Bing is begging his master who apparently has no clue who he is and is totally ok using#lethal moves on him#aldkfj;ladkjs;laksjdf;lakdj

genuinely curious how the writers and larger dragon age audience would treat thom rainier if instead of being appropriately* repentant and putting himself in prison he blew up a major orlesian government building to instigate a chevalier rebellion or tried to have someone do some necromantic blood magic ritual involving uncertain danger and possible sacrifices to bring the innocent children he ordered killed back to life
#*appropriately as in showing the expected amount of remorse in the appropriate way in a society founded on guilt and shame#i think blackwall actually tells us a lot about how dragon age's writers conceptualize justice and deservedness of punishment#im glad we get the option to forgive him but why do we get the option when anders is exiled at best?#and later characterized as a villain by dai#when solas is willfully imprisoned at best and trapped in a horrifying psychological torture chamber at worst?#blackwall gets a full redemption happy ending if inky so chooses#and im not saying he shouldnt#i forgive him every time#but its so interesting to me that narratively speaking#he seems to earn his happy ending through submission to punishment via imprisonment#as does solas but blackwall is portrayed far more sympathetically overall#there isnt the same meta-level narrative slander and clear agenda on behalf of the writing to make you feel a certain way about his crimes#as there is with anders and solas#why? whats the difference? what did he do to buy himself that narrative goodwill?#put himself in prison? why do the writers love carceral punishment so much lmfaooo#mine#if you wanna screenshot these tags and add them to the reblog feel free#im realizing i prob just shouldve put all of this in the post but its too late now#i think theres actually a strong argument that thom does not do nearly ENOUGH to right his wrongs#where is his effort to reform the orlesian military? where is his criticism of orlesian imperialism?#how does serving in the inquisition have a direct impact on the people he harmed? it doesnt#when you compare him to someone like roy mustang#yes im comparing him to roy mustang this is my blog and you are never going to escape roy mustang comparisons here#roy's political ambitions following his war crimes are directly related to those war crimes#and his goals directly benefit the same group of people he harmed#their ancestors and family members literally#meanwhile blackwall just kind of does vague “good” deeds and gets a full redemption#he really does not make much effort to repatriate the harm he did as a soldier#he just moves on#which again.... no shade to blackwall. my inky forgives him
