first thought on the story: before i even started i was so ready like i told everyone n their mamas abt how i was going to start this epic 😐. i was expecting A LOT bc not only is it regarded so highly by vn fans but also bc it left me with a slew of questions from the first game.. likee what was the relation of kasumi and sumika? was takeru going to fr survive this n if he DID is he going to go back to his original world? WHAT made him shift into this fucket up world in the first place? WHAT exactly are the BETA and why are they doing thissss😭😭 AND! IS takeru destined to suffer forever? Why?!

But now that ive finished it all.. wtf 😭 its honestly genius. a narrative that uses its medium and genre in the fullest sense!!! despite some of its outdatedness + my frustration with the protag the STORY TELLING is what kept me going. from the themes to the characters to the world building it was all so well done 😭 and its done in a way where it is satisfying to follow especially if you like to puzzle n piece things together. what interested me the most tho was the world building!! AND HOW IT ALL MAKES SENSE.. the game took all of the cliches and mechanics it represented as a dating sim n flipped them all in its favor to tell a crazy epic cohesive multi dimensional scifi tale.. WTF.

as a novel and a game it did its job beautifully.. AND even tho SOME arcs PISSED ME OFF n SOME scenes left me scowling at what i was dealing with (bc My god,! You will deal with the shit!) i kept coming back with genuine intrigue humm

my first initial thought once i was done was 'that was a LOT' bc My goodness what a fckin rollercoaster.. ONE that seemed to only plummet DOWN. As for my second thought..? 'at least we overcame.' and u know what. So true. To this i say Congratulations âge. I was unfamiliar with ur game.

prediction of the end: i honestly did not know what to expect for the end i just wanted my questions answered LOL! but when i got there it left me feeling both hollow and full.. it was heartbreaking..! BUT also cathartic?! cuz i cried like a bitch. bc. My gosh 😭😭😭😭😭😭 its some serious whiplash stored in those last 2ish hours in the game. it was worth seeing all of it tie together tho bc in the end it left u with a glimmer of hope for the future.. even though it is so so dim, its still there.. which was the kind of ending i need during these times

PLUS they played this song at the end like why would u do that. shit had me bawling fr. we used to be so happy hearing this. now it is a bit bittersweet and nostalgic.. like a memory

what scared you most: the capabilities of the BETA most definitely r u kidding me. every single battle seemed more n more hopeless 😭 every step that was taken to help humanity had high stakes. there was no way anything was going to be done without irreparable damage n loss. it constantly felt like a losing battle watching humanity try to survive and still have the heart to fight. but what TRULY disturbed me was sumikas relationship with the BETA and how they decided to tackle it. THAT shit had me pause the game for a hot min bcuz seriously? HONESTLY? it was overkill. beating a dead horse😭 they did not have to show me all of that N whats worse is that they HAD to drag it out. LIKE WE GET IT. WE GOT IT BEFORE IT WAS EVEN FULLY REVEALED WITH CONTEXT CLUES.. U did not have to dedicate a whole 30/45 mins revisiting her trauma in such detail 😭😭😭 so unnecessary my god.

even though the BETA are (by far) one of the most terrifying enemies that ive encountered in a story i want to know more about them.. the ending of alternative mightve answered most of my questions but it also left me having more bc its interesting on how the BETA operate. but there is also like an infinite amount of them i dont even know how anyon could keep up with that.. truly humanity has it BAD.

meiya and kasumi rlly shined in alternative for me tho <3

of course so did sumika but thats bcuz i was always biased towards her LOL. however she didnt leave a huge impression on me in this story when it came to the romance between her n takeru which is crazy bc in extra i was full #teamsumika. cuz takeru n sumika been living side by side since childhood n now this random girl (meiya) shows up n she doesnt even explain her relation to takeru but she declared that shes going to marry him like fr who are u?! BUT! even tho i was team sumika, in the end (when truths were fully revealed), my feelings were a bit swayed towards meiyas favor!

its interesting bc in alternative it was like meiya n sumika switched places bc i was more partial to wanting meiya to be with takeru for the majority of the story (!) which is so funny considering how ride n die i was for sumika at the very beginning.. of course id rather have takeru have no baes at all bcuz his character is just so inconceivably dense at times (#TakeruOUT) but i felt that their relationship had more sustenance.. i believe its because meiya and sumika flipped roles where sumika is now the random 'newcomer' instead of meiya. n also bc i spent more time with meiya in unlimited.. BUT just like how i was with meiya in extra, in alternative when truths were once again revealed at the end my feelings were swayed towards sumikas favor LMFAOO

its just tht they are both so well written and humane and so so sweet and deserving. i really love them both therefore i have decided that there is no more #TEAMSUMIKA or #TEAMMEIYA anymore. ive ended the civil war. they are both equally beautiful and i want them to be best friends forever!

AS for the protagonist. Takeru. my god man 😭 talk about change. he STILL was so ridiculous at times but even then he STILL managed to mature. proof that anythings possible. I guess. And after spending over like 60 smthing hours with him n experiencing his crazy ass situation i have been able to witness and appreciate his growth ... U know what takeru. U alright............................... I guess

favorite quote: I dont even know if i have a favorite quote there was so much covered and so many great quotes in this.. if i HAD to pick tho its probably this awesome reminder:

instead of memorizing quotes im thinking of moments.. like when kasumi and sumika speak about their connection.. or when captain isumi gave takeru that pep talk before operation 21st.. OR WHEN sumika told takeru that in every universe she loves him and him saying that he feels likewise.. kyaa.. and u KNOW they MEANT THAT SHIT THRU AND THRU! its beautiful. im still praying for her tho.

rating for the whole book: despite all that it put me through this story left me a lot of food for thought. some moments moved me in ways so honest that it left me speechless while also giving me questions in its wake.. it took me a while to finish bc it had me stop n think about life and CHOICE multiple times in the realest sense omfg. it had me think of the serious unruliness of life n how do we navigate it when the universe decides to do whatverr the fuck it wants to do.. how much of our fate can we really control... AND when all seems hopeless how do we manage to find the will to continue on.. !? it all varies from person to person but ist deep shit. Very inspiring.. AND bc of how satisfying n thought provoking it was im giving it a 5/5. OKAYY

i def plan on revisiting the trilogy in the future and see if my first thoughts still ring true.. i also will be on the look out for details and hints when i comb thru it all again. but this first read was worth it and now that i finished i kinda feel empty LMFAO. i wish for more people to read it n talk about it so i can get on my soapbox n pick it apart. 🤦‍♂️

Long time no see 🙈

It appears that I missed nothing! But quick rundown of what happened when I was away;

another scary scary pockets cover, happened the same day as his big I'm unemployed once and done singing gig announcement. Loads of constipated faces, will follow with the best ones later today....

got couple of messages saying Freddy got married (?!!?) and that Benny pulled a disappearing act and never showed up. Not surprised, he probably wanted to sing at the reception so they never invited him cuz it was their day and they are supposed to enjoy it :v

Benny was in Cali with guests of his and some kids??? Gonna post one pic but there's more which I won't cuz as I said kids and posting kids on them internets is bad, even if parents do that lol boy is alive and kicking tho!

sooo IMDb 100 stars of 2022... Benny got the fan fave award last year and was in top 10 of that list, he did not even crack the list this year x.x wow almost like people had no reason to google his ass, career wise, this year... he a fan fave top 100 star on daily mail and twitter hall of shame tho imma sure 🙈

Viva Las Vengeance

Okay this was the first song released and I played it about 30 times in the first 24 hours. I unironically fell in love with it- I loved the beat, the instrumentals, and though the lyrics were nonsense (like all others) I could understand them and enjoyed singing them.

Middle Of A Breakup

This song was… kinda bad ngl. I really wanted to like it but the lyrics were kinda trash (except for a few lines). The “oh shit you’re kissing my neck” part makes me physically cringe EVERY time because what even is this??? Needed a filler real bad 💀 It’s still a bop but I’m probs gonna say that about most of this album because I’m a sucker and don’t like disliking stuff. Doesn’t stop it from getting stuck in my head though-

Don’t Let The Light Go Out

I definitely liked this more than MOAB and Local God, though the verses felt a little rushed and still too high pitched, compared to the vibe the song was going after. And the way the chorus went all quiet and musicless and slow-paced threw me off a bit but oh well. I’d listen to it while driving in the rain.

Local God

It’s an okay song, but it lowkey annoys me LMAO. Maybe it’s just the way he says “local god” but I wanted to punch him in the face fr. I didn’t catch most of the lyrics but I think I just wasn’t paying attention- but I got the general vibe and it’s not awful.

Okay I can see why people are saying it’s a Bohemian Rhapsody rip-off- he didn’t even try to hide it 💀 Even this “slow-ish” song feels rushed and- wait why is it making clicky sounds- WHAT IS THIS SOUND LOL. If this man sings another high-note I swear- You’re tryna do that gritty thing but it’s not working 💀 Want a throat lozenge?

Say It Louder

First two lines really calling yourself out huh- THE SELF-MADE ECHO MADE ME CRY LMAO. Brendon the music covers up ur voice so much what are you even saying SAY IT LOUDER. This is such a mess I’m shaking and crying rn. The chorus has an good beat (rhythm? Idk I like how it sounds) but the lyrics- hm. This slow part does not go at ALL what was he trying to to LMAO. I like the little piano (I think) in the background tho that’s cool.

Okay I like this more than the others so far, I like the soft thing he’s doing with his voice. Ah okay glad to hear the chorus sounds entirely unique and original 😃 Idk what decade this is reminding me of but it’s something old methinks. 60’s/70’s? Bro I don’t know but it’s got a vibe- not the chorus though the chorus sucks. WTF IS THE INTERLUDE LMFAO SOUNDS LIKE A DUMPSTER FIRE. “HA HA HA HA 🥵” STFU LOL. Okay I can handle a few “come on”s but dude 💀

Something About Maggie

Let him GOOOO- shh. WOAH straight into it with “makes me want to slit my wrists 🤪” bro read the room 💀 “People say people say run awayyyy” the level of cringe is unreal- THE HIGH NOTES ARE SO RANDOM AND UNCOMFORTABLE LMFAO. My dude you have a wife leave Maggie alone-

Okay I heard 10 seconds of this yesterday and I think I’m going to like it so let’s see🤞🏻 “LEAVE ME ALOOOONE” BROSKI SOUNDS LIKE UR SINGING “INTO THE UNKNOWN” AGAIN LMAOOO. Okay nvm literally the only line I like is “your majesty’s magnificent, my tragedy is imminent” it’s literally the only good-sounding line WHY WASN’T MORE OF IT LIKE THIS HUH :( Every time he screams “I’m crying” I expect him to break out Local God again LMAO. “Is this all there is?!” made me wanna neck ngl I cringed 💀 Again, this slow part is NOT IT.

“You sweet little kitten” STOPSTOPSOTPSOTP- Again, too many words in verses, or trying to sing too fast. Take a breather my dude. And the chorus- it’s a clear rip-off of the original but it doesn’t fit with the song at ALL. I like what he’s trying to do with his voice but he’s failing lol. I want more soft/slow lyrics/songs :( “It’s you and me~” alright Kate Bush 💀 And AGAIN he’s trying to do the gritty thing but FAILING.

Do It To Death

I like the music at the beginning. Why do “give it a try” and “before we die” sound like they’re from Grease LMFAO. Okay this isn’t as bad as the others so far I’ll give it that- nvm where did the music go 💀 Bestie you’re AT the limit and had surpassed your stay- Nvm this just sounds like such a try hard song lmao I’m not a fan. Now it’s slow and dramatic and for WHAT. OMG NO HE DID NOT. NO YOU SHUT UP. I SEE WHAT YOU WERE TRYNA DO BUT IT JUST SOUNDED LIKE THE SONG CUT OUT AND ACCIDENTALLY STARTED PLAYING VIVA LAS VENGEANCE 💀

Overall:

Look, I went into this as a hardcore Panic! fan prepared to force myself to like these and defend them and bop along to them- but this was actual dogshit. As previously stated there were a few songs that I genuinely enjoyed and would listen to again but most of these were straight up PAINFUL. And they don’t sound like Panic! at ALL. And I know not every album has to/will sound the same and I don’t expect them to, but they all had a vibe, y’know? A Panic! vibe. Just enough uniqueness and boppiness and drama and angst for it to WORK. Pretty. Odd. and Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die both sound COMPLETELY different but they both sound distinctly like Panic! in ways I’m not smart enough to explain. This did not.

I’m a full on proper Panic! fan and this album was incredibly disappointing to me. I know I’m sounding really mean and negative here but I promise it’s just for the funny 😭 I don’t hate Brendon or anything. And if you enjoy the album then I support you 100%! It’s just not my cup of tea :) But I’m not giving up hope!

"at home on the floor" - echoes of mmith ⟶ when he's alone, going through something, he deals with it by wallowing + substance abuse ("i'll be on the floor", "give me some morphine") - the voice asking him what kind of pills he's on sounds menacing, tho - assuming he's taking pills, while it might not be the case at all (bc this echo in another person's voice might imply that's in the past/a rumor/a false assumption)

Ringing the bell And nobody's coming to help

"ringing the bell" - for service (painting the picture of this washed out rock star on the floor of their house, like elton in his worst days perhaps) / sounding the bell for help / ringing a doorbell

⟶ "nobody's coming to help": he's asking for help, "hold out the palm of your hand", but he's not getting any - could someone else be still saying this? as in, "nobody's coming to help, harry"

"your daddy" - whose daddy? who is daddy? random ass lyric as an excuse to mention a daddy, kink/gay culture?

is h talking? is someone saying this to h?

in any case, it doesn't matter who's doing it first: if we move forward in any way, we're good

SYNTHESIS

As with everything Harry has ever done in his artistic career, this song isn’t straightforward. But we don’t want that anyway, do we? We like to be challenged.

In this first single for Harry’s Home, there are a lot of sentiments woven in from his previous albums. Especially Meet Me In the Hallway’s symbolism and lyrics have found their way in. He’s not recycling his old work, however; he’s building onto it. He’s still the person who’ll wait for his lover to come around, but now his lover doesn’t need to start talking, he needs to stop going in circles. They seem to keep discussing the same things and Harry’s ready to move on. Who they are now is not who they were, and that’s not a bad thing. They know they have each other and that they survived the challenges thrown their way so far.

The chorus could be interpreted in multiple ways, I think. “You know it’s not the same as it was” can be melancholy, sad about the changes they’ve been through and the things that have been lost. About their relationship, about the world they live in, about their careers. It can also be a call for action. The time to talk is over, now it’s time to fucking make shit happen. The way I hear the entire song, I think it’s the latter. In the first verse, Harry calls out the lack of support or help. He states what he needs in literal terms, then wonders what the fuss is about. It's honestly one of the more assertive moments we've gotten from him. Then he continues to say that they need to stop talking about shit they’ve gone through time and again. Sometimes it’s no use to reiterate what happened. The same questions will remain unanswered. What Harry knows is they have each other, because they know they can never quit each other.

This low-key exasperated Harry gets even more daring with throwing bullshit out the window in the second verse, when he voices things others have undoubtedly said to him. It shows a lack of understanding of his personal life, that even people who have his number don’t know him, and, more dramatically, don’t care about him. They need him to perform, act normal, be good. The notion of him needing help or support and not getting it comes back here, which underlines its significance. Harry feels let down by those around him, those who are supposed to care. (His team, fans, anyone.) “In this world, it’s just us” sounds even more intense in that context - it’s us against the world, more than ever before, bc wow people have shown their true colors.

Harry has realised something. After years of going in circles, doing the same things to keep things in place, trying to preserve what they have, he’s realised he wants action. Things change whether they want them to or not. Harry wants to embrace change, in himself and everything around him, because he knows it’s brought beautiful things before. And he and his love change beautifully through it all. The shit that “was” is what they need to actively move past. No more conversations about it, let’s just do it. Doesn’t matter what happens first. Something needs to. “It’s not the same”, in this light, to me, is Harry saying he’s realised their circumstances have changed to the point where they can’t stand still anymore. He’s seen the true nature of those around him, he’s found out what he really wants.

It’s fascinating, really, how this song at first sounded regretful of change to me, when only after a few listens I realised it’s the opposite. It’s Harry welcoming change, and basically prodding his own personal story to get shit moving. He’s thrown scruple over his shoulder, calling a halt to all the running in circles (mv anyone?) and grabbing his lover by the hand, certain in the belief they can handle the biggest changes they’ll have to face yet.

Welcome to the phandom!!! Here is the fullest list I could come up with of every phantom you could encounter out there and a snippet of their personality (except for adaptations I haven’t seen)

(No pressure to read the whole thing btw, if you just wanna know who the main boys are they re at the top :D)

Main phantoms (the ones you’ll see referenced most often):

Leroux!Erik or Lerik: original 1909 novel by Gaston Leroux. He’s the classic, creepy and misunderstood, he’s a commentary on society’s treatment of anyone outside of the norm. One of the most fucked up phantoms tbh. Refers to himself in the third person. But rly he’s just a funny little man :D

Lon Chaney Erik or Lerik: 1925 silent film. A really faithful adaptation except for the overly dramatic hollywood ending. Mostly the same as the book.

Merik or Musical!Erik: ALW musical phantom, usually based on Ramin karimloo s performance in the 25th anniversary recordings but other popular actors include Hugh Panaro, Micheal Crawford and more. A much more romantic and seductive phantom than the adaptations that came before.

Gerik: 2004 film adaptation of ALW s musical starring Gerard Butler. He’s buff, not that ugly, and a bit of a drama queen.

Cherik or Dance!Erik: 1990 miniseries starring charles dance, based on a musical by yeston and kopit (which I’m not putting as a separate Erik since they’re so similar). By all means the sweetest cinnamon roll phantom out there. He likes picnics, is a ginger and doesn’t pretend to be an angel to trick Christine. He must be protected at all costs.

Kerik or Kay!Erik: Novel by Susan Kay. It’s basically a published fanfic of a biography of the phantom s life. This Erik is very fandom based, he’s hot, troubled and ✨the main character✨ tm. This novel is very often used when referencing erik’s backstory in the phandom, also the reason “the persian” is often called Nadir Khan.

Winslow or Bird!Erik: 1974 film phantom of paradise. It’s a very funky musical comedy/horror adaptation set in a nightclub. The phantom wears a weird bird helmet/mask.

MazM Erik: 2018 MazM mobile game. He has long flowy hair, is really fucking creepy and insane (but still a sweety in my heart)

Jerik or Rat!Erik: 1998 film Il fantasma dell’opera. Ah the infamous rat phantom. Haven’t seen this version but all I know is Erik has a weird relationship with rats, he s not disfigured and is generally considered the weirdest one of the bunch.

Hana or Takarazuka!Erik or Erika: female version of the phantom from the Japanese production of the yeston and kopit musical by the all female theatre troupe takarazuka. Quite similar to Cherik, she’s a sweety, but also hilarious and scary and I love her.

Destler or Englund!Phantom: 1989 horror movie. He’s a classic slasher, played by non-other than Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger). The adaptation that introduced the last name Destler, which is generally accepted in the fandom as Erik’s last name.

Erique or ClaudeRains!Erik: 1943 film. Haven’t seen it but from what I ve heard: ✨composer gets splashed with acid and goes insane✨, also he has weird dad vibes maybe?

Niche phantoms:

Prof Petrie: 1962 horror film

Monster in Paris: 2011 animated film, the phantom is a giant flea lookin monster, i havent seen it but by all accounts it’s a really sweet film

Animated Erik: 1987 children’s film, terrible animation, very funny, so bad it’s kinda good

Staller phantom: 1991 musical starring david staller, good actor, terrible musical, the song perfect music slaps tho

Kenneth Hill phantom: 1976 musical (which predates ALW’s musical!!!). I’ve heard a couple songs from this musical, very cool tbh, plus the first instance of a black actor playing the phantom I believe?

Phantom of the mall (Eric): 1989 film. He’s a high schooler I think? Also like a jock?? He lifts weights??? Wtf is going on here????

Honorable mentions (I’ve seen these here and there but they re so incredibly niche):

1930 oswald and the lucky rabbit short, Korvin Phantom: 1983 film, There’s a few more niche video game adaptations such as a point and click game but frankly they re quite hard to find.

My JCS Opinions No One Asked For

At this point in my obsession with this show, I’ve tracked down and watched lots of different versions through various legally dubious means. Here are my thoughts on the ones I’ve seen so far! (In a list of each show chronologically because why not)

1973 movie: This one is both great and ehhhh for me. It’s great because it’s the original. I love Carl Anderson’s Judas. Ted Neely’s Gethsemane high note always tingles my spine. Yvonne Elliman’s Mary Magdalene is just soothing and lovely. The ensemble’s choreography always makes me chuckle, esp the cartwheeling before Simon’s song. The setting is fun! Hippies in the desert = basically what Jesus and Co were in 33AD.

Its ehhhh points are that it just doesn’t *grip* me? It doesn’t shake me upside down to make my brain fall out like other versions do. Besides Gethsemane, Jesus in this version is leaning into the stoic-divine-savior depiction of him? Which imo is not the point of JCS. The Pharisees are…making costume choices. Pilate is lame and forgettable. Herod is supposed to be a WTF moment in every production, but this version just makes me vaguely uncomfortable and idk why. And the slow tempo/boring choreography/weirdly-mixed sound during Superstar always puts me to sleep. Bonus points for Carl Anderson's heavenly leather fringe costume tho.

2000 movie: Here’s where things get interesting. I briefly posted about my thoughts on this one in particular a while back. This movie is such a trainwreck and I can’t stop watching it. I’ll put on clips of it when I’m feeling down and need a laugh. It’s…something.

The costume choices are just silly. The overacting is comical. The singing is either so weak (Jesus) or so overexaggerated (everyone else). My throat gets sympathy pains every time Jerome Pradon’s Judas opens his mouth; he’s not a high tenor like the part requires. But damn if he doesn’t sell the trash-man-surviving-on-Redbull-and-poor-life-choices version of this character in every single voice-cracking wail into the middle distance. The devastation in his acting kills meeeee. I also think Renee Castle might be my favorite Mary Magdalene? I love her voice and her sweetness :) I also like the Pharisees in this! They’re dressed like dollar store Matrix action figures and it absolutely works. I also laugh at Simon’s frosted tips every time he’s onscreen. The guy can sing tho! And it should be noted: between the costuming and the campiness and Judas’s every interaction with Jesus, this is one of the gayest versions out there. I’m not sure if it was on purpose or not, but I’m grateful for it either way.

Lastly, special mention must go to Leather Daddy Pontius Pilate. He absolutely fucks.

2/10 for actual quality, 9/10 for rewatch value

2012 Broadway revival: I like this one! A lot! It doesn’t *move* me, but it is extremely competent and everyone knows what they’re doing. Jesus is kinda dull in this, but I’m ok with him not being the main character lol. Josh Young’s Judas is aalskdjflsjdf yessss. Belt those notes in your blue flowy robe my dude!!! And the highlight is definitely the relationship between Jesus, Judas, and Mary. They are 100% in a polycule and honestly good for them. This is probably the only version where I will intentionally seek out the song Could We Start Again Please, just to see the three of them sing their verse together while holding hands. It’s beautiful and deserves all the accolades.

I think the biggest downside for me in this is that since it’s a bootleg recording from faraway I can’t connect with their facial expressions as well as I would actually seeing this live. That would probably make it one of my absolute favorites.

2012 UK Arena Tour: Oh, 2012 Arena Tour, my beloved. I am such trash for you. When I say that this show needs to latch onto my beating heart and refuse to let go, this is exactly what I’m talking about. I will watch a clip from this, only to end up watching the entire show again because I cannot put it down. It’s just. So. Good.

Lots of people have done write-ups in much more detail and eloquence about why they love this version, so I will be brief. The casting in this show is just. So top-notch. There is not a weak link among them. Often there will be parts I’ll skip in a JCS production because this or that character’s portrayal is kinda meh. BUT NOT THIS VERSION. I love everyone’s interpretations of their characters. Jesus. Judas. Mary Magdalene. Simon. Caiaphas. Annas. Pilate. Herod. WHY ARE THEY ALL SO GOOD?????

This one also strikes the perfect balance in tone. The ridiculous campy bits (like Herod’s song, Superstar, etc.) are played up as exactly that, but the serious bits are played deathly serious. Everyone’s making choices according to their character’s internal logic, and it sucks me right in. Ugh. I love it.

Jesus and Judas are, of course, always the highlights. And Ben Forster and Tim Minchin are just putting their whole hearts into this. The chemistry? The belting? The facial expressions? Every single choice they’re making, even when they’re not the focus of the scene? The pained looks? The eyerolls? The moments of anguished violence, followed by immediate regret? Ben’s Gethsemane (and making me care about his character’s emotional journey outside of Gethsemane)??? Tim’s death scene??? Superstar?????

Some people don’t like the modern aesthetic of this one. Their tastes and mine are very different, because I adore it. Some people say the autotune in the official recording ruins it for them. It doesn’t ruin it for me; the vocals are still powerful and shake me to my core. I can only imagine what it was like to see this live. Probably the closest thing to a religious experience I will ever have.

10/10. 10/10.

2014 Swedish Arena Tour: Oooooh baby. What a wild ride this is. We got metal biker rockstar Messiah in the house! Complete with leather pants and long flowing wigs :) I love it.

Peter Johansson’s Judas is def one of my favorites. He’s such a sarcastic slutty king. I adore him.

Speaking of slutty kings, did someone say Ola Salo’s Jesus???? This man is definitely hearing a voice in his head telling him he’s special, and thinking it’s God. He is 100% down to call himself one part of a Holy Trinity. His delivery of certain lines just gives me the happy wiggles. It’s both ethereal, detached, and bitchy all at once. My favorite is probably The Last Supper, when he’s taunting Judas with the lines “why don’t you go do it?” and “hurry, they are waiting”. I don’t know how to describe it, but those two lines in particular just get me to my core the way he says them.

Then there’s the famous kiss. Such a gay moment. So good.

My complaint about this version is that everything else besides Jesus and Judas is bland at best, deeply uncomfortable at worst. Yes, I am mostly talking about the Pharisees. There is a whole other post I could make about how, since this show is based on the Gospels in the New Testament, a case can be made that it rests on a foundation that flirts with anti-Semitism, so it must tread very carefully not to lean into that. (That also makes me question whether Christianity in itself is inherently anti-Semitic? Maybe, maybe not, but again, that’s a whole nother conversation.) And this version of JCS…misses the mark. Hard. And it prevents me from watching too much of this show beyond the big Jesus and Judas scenes.

9/10 for Jesus and Judas, 4/10 for everything else.

2018 Live In Concert: This one was a nope for me. I liked Judas okay in this one, and his glittery, belt-y Superstar is probably one of my favorite versions of the song. But John Legend was clearly cast as Jesus because he’s a big name music star who wanted that sweet sweet EGOT (and once he won an Emmy for being a producer on this show, he got it). But he is a baritone trying to sing a tenor part. I’m fine with him not going for the G5 in Gethsemane, but when he tries to climb up there for the “see how I die” part, *I* started getting lightheaded just watching him. It’s painful.

Everything else is just boring and forgettable. Not much else to say about it.

3/10.

Let's talk process The Prom because the tag is v negative rn and I have some random thoughts

I loved it. Like genuinely. I love the musical and was a little nervous since stage-to-screen adaptions can be a hit or miss, but I liked it a lot.

I've seen a lot of complaints on here comparing the two, but I honestly thought it was a very faithful adaption. Yeah, there were some changes, but that's to be expected. This wasn't a pro shot, this was an adaptation.

Emma: I liked her, especially for a debut role! I thought her voice was really nice, although I'm so used to Caitlin's higher pitch that some of the notes threw me, but nothing major.

I found it odd that she smiled through Just Breathe, but I chocked it up to her daydreaming about having it better than she currently did. Idk, it seemed like a weird acting choice but whatever. I liked her... except for that weird mechanic jumpsuit thing she was wearing. Wtf was that?

Alyssa: I'd have liked to see more of her, but I honestly feel that way about the musical too. She's a very important role, and yet I never quite feel connected to her, at least until her song Alyssa Greene. I found her voice to be a little mature for a high schooler, but no real complaints there.

Barry: Oof, the elephant in the room. Okay, I have mixed feeling about James Corden in general. Loved him in Into the Woods, hated him in Cats, but I like him as a person in general like on his talk show. I was nervous about him in this role because I wasn't sure how he would pull off the campy gay vibe that Barry requires. For the most part, I think he did well. There were some parts I thought were a little cringy (I'm not a gay man so I shouldn't speak on whether it crossed the line into offensive), but I didn't hate him like I feared I would since Barry is my favorite character.

They made him younger for some reason? Is that just because James Corden is younger than the original role is for? He says prom was only 21 years ago, instead of 29. No big deal, just an odd change.

Dee Dee: This was a pleasant surprise! As much as I like Meryl Streep, I was nervous about her in this role, although I do think she was a little too old for it, namely The Lady's Improving. That's a huge number and while I knew she could sing, I wasn't sure her belting chops could handle it, but I thought she sounded great! It's Not About Me was great as well.

Trent: I needed more of him, but again, I've felt that way about the musical too. I'm devastated they halved The Acceptance Song, but I get it. It's not that necessary to keep the plot moving, I would just have liked to hear it, because any excuse for more Andy Randy is always a plus for me.

Love Thy Neighbor was the part I've been most looking forward to since day one and it did not disappoint! I will definitely be jamming to this one a lot in the near future. Loved it.

Angie: Angie isn't a character I normally cared for, and Zazz was one of my least favorite songs so I didn't have many thoughts going into this, but I think I liked her better in the movie tbh? She was more fun I think, and I liked that Zazz became more of a spectacle. It's normally one of the first songs I'll skip on the cast recording, but I thoroughly enjoyed it here.

Tom: Didn't expect him to have so much screentime! They seemed to play up his and Dee Dee's relationship more in this, which is... fine I guess? I didn't really care either way, but I think he did a great job and I didn't find We Look to You as boring as I usually do lmao. He and Dee Dee were cute, especially on their Apples & Bees date.

Mrs. Greene: I mean, what can I say? She pissed me off, which was her entire purpose. Her dress at the end was ugly af tho.

Some of the changes they made were... Choices, but nothing that really stood out to me as terrible.

The addition of seeing Emma's grandma was fun, especially her bonding with Barry. I just thought it was cute - as was his relationship with Emma, obviously.

The addition of Barry's mom however was um, odd. I'm fuzzy on the details in the musical, but I don't know if we ever learn whether Barry actually calls her or not? He mentions it in Barry is Going to Prom, but I think it's left up to interpretation, which I like. Seemed weird, but I guess it was a sweet moment?

Unfortunately, this meant we didn't get the "you're going to lose her" moment I kept waiting for. Slight complaint there.

Dee Dee calling Barry's mom though... her heart was in the right place, but that may not have been the best choice. He was clearly upset, and rightfully so - his parents wanted to send him to conversion therapy ffs. That's traumatizing. It should have been his choice to reconnect, not something forced upon him.

They seemed to give the adults (mostly Barry and Dee Dee) more backstory, which was probably unnecessary, but I didn't mind it. Unpopular opinion, but they're my favorite parts of the show anyway.

However the addition of more backstory certainly added an extra element of angst. Ouch. Some moments hurted.

Barry and Dee Dee's relationship is really sweet and I'd like to explore it more sometime.

I liked that the songs weren't really changed much (a few words here and there, but nothing too noticable), other than The Acceptance Song and You Happened, but I liked Emma's Tonight Belongs to You reprise a lot, so I'll deal with it.

Unruly Heart gets me every time man... actually this movie in general made me tear up like three separate times ugh ugh.

All in all, I found it to be a very true adaption and have no real complaints at this time. I'm sure I will revisit this movie soon and maybe I'll take a deeper dive in a rewatch, but for the most part, I found it to be thoroughly enjoyable and I think if anyone is looking for a fun musical to watch, you should check it out, as well as the Broadway version.

This is a special story that shouldn't be missed.

Okay, so, initial thoughts.

I loved all the camp scenes and I kinda got bored when it cut to Nini and Ricky ehehe. i really liked showing the different dynamics of the girls together and the guys and exploring those friendships more and, obviously, Portwell were adorable! I love them and will defend them constantly However, I……am not a fan of a potential EJxGinaxRicky love triangle thing being POTENTIALLY set up (????) and I'm also not a fan of this love triangle POTENTIALLY resolving itself by POTENTIALLY having nini come to camp and rini gets back together. yes this is all my speculations for the rest of the season ehehuhuhuesohohoohhafhdlakjdsfhasdf Both Ricky and Nini need time away from each other to gain their own independence and to understand why their relationship ended in the first place (i cannot remember if in s2 they actually covered that or not. i do remember their breakup scene was good? in the sense that it followed exactly what the show was setting up in s2 for rini)

But who knows. Maybe Rini will reunite and actually be a better fit after some time apart to grow as people? I'll just have to see how that goes.

And while I used to ship rina and due to that, I will probably have a slight soft spot for them in the sense of just liking their scenes together………….i am very concerned for portwell's happiness. This is supposed to be Gina's season and EJ plays a big role for that and he's also getting even more screentime I--------

i just want portwell to be happy okay???

He’s an artist on youtube

If yall know zhc on youtube just imagine that but not so rich (I don’t watch zhc btw but i do know that he does custom art on iphones and stuff and that is definitely not jack kelly)

Anyways Jack simply goes by Jack Kelly.

So jack does art challenges. Like does the weirdest requests from his fans left in his comment section and stuff

Or maybe challenging himself to make art from a specific theme or a specific media

That is literally the only way I can describe it

She’s very lyrical, with a lot of metaphors

She and Spot are besties and has been known to have done a few collabs together

Their fans were hesitant about their collabs since their genre is pretty different from the other but they make it work and it slAPS

Yes this is inspired by the fact that he’s 100% a history nerd (no one change my mind i love this headcanon aight)

He actually helps a lot of students understand history even further for school through his novels

Anyways he goes by Specs because I say so

No one knows why that’s his pseudonym and Specs isn’t interested in explaining either. No one other than the newsies need to know it was born from a stupid nickname the newsies gave him :)

His research mostly comes from history books because of his genre which wouldn’t be a problem since he has loads and will voluntarily buy more if needed

Also yeah he makes a great director for the movies taken from his books

Mush

He’s a chef on youtube

Goes by Mush Meyers

So think if Gordon Ramsey and his youtube channel but make it mush

Yeah that’s it really

Ok but Mush is a jolly and friendly person

Other than just food vlogging he does cooking challenges and cooking tips too

Sometimes he does the cooking challenges with a friend (mostly henry but i’ll get to him later on in the list)

- a/n: i listened to a night to remember by the hsm cast while writing some of this 🥴 also i wanted to make this gender neutral but it ended up being f!reader bc i realized i was really just writing my own fantasy of what i wanted prom to be dhdhhdhd

tsukishima x f!reader

you guys originally weren’t gonna go but you got the urge to go at last minute

so you ended up having to pay extra and tsukki hated you bc of it 🤩

you guys planned on going with a group of friends and those friends already made reservations at a restaurant so you guys didn’t have to worry about anything

you dragged tsukki with you to go look for prom dresses

he tried to act annoyed but you saw how he blushed every time you would leave the dressing room to show him a dress

you ended up not getting a dress bc that shit expensive and the one dress that you could afford and that you liked was stained 😔

you ended up finding a dress later and tsukki borrowed a suit from akiteru 🥺

on the day of, instead of doing the thing where the guy picks you up, tsukki just showed up at your house in the morning so you could get ready together later

as you got ready, you both listened to each other’s playlists

(tb to me and my friend listening to girl group songs to hype us up)

you: omg you showered 🥺

tsukki: wtf is that supposed to mean

you: nothing, stinky 🥰

once you guys were ready you went downstairs and tsukki pulled out a corsage and a matching boutonnière (let’s hope i spelled that right 😍)

after he told you to shut up, you put them on each other as your parents took pictures

after your parents made sure to embarrass you by making you two have a whole photoshoot, you guys left to meet the others at the restaurant

after dinner you guys took pictures in the parking lot, much to tsukishima’s distaste

hinata and his date ended up having to carpool with y’all so the ride there was not very quiet

your school was holding your prom at a hotel at the middle of nowhere so otw there you guys listened to “hype” music, requested by hinata

tsukki had his hand on your thigh 🥺 and you put your hand over his as you talked with hinata and his date, who were in the back 🥺👉🏼👈🏼

once you arrived, all you saw was high schoolers, distressed school staff, and annoyed adults

your friend group sorta separated once you guys found a table inside

most of your friends went on the dance floor, others went to find a restroom already and you and tsukki sat at the table

your table was sorta near the refreshment table so tsukki got you guys smth to drink

you guys just vibed at the table for a bit until one of your favorite songs came on and you looked at tsukki like 🥺

him: no

you: 🥺🥺🥺

him: no.

five seconds later he’s following you onto the floor bc he’s whipped for you

tsukki awkwardly trying to dance with you and you dance energetically

a slow song came on afterwards and all the couples started slow dancing together

both of you being stiff as you dance together

you having to sort of lead him even tho guys are usually the ones to lead (according to my fifth grade ballroom teacher, this is the only time men should lead 😭😭)

tsukki blushing when his hands accidentally touch below your hips

at one point you guys are sorta just swaying back and forth as you lay your head on his chest

afterwards you guys head outside where some ppl are just hanging out

you end up talking to a few classmates as tsukki kind of just follows u around

if you’re shy or just not that social then you guys just sit down together and silently talk together

at this point you’ve been at the dance for like two or three hours and your friend group you came with eventually finds y’all and you guys decide to leave early to go get food or smth

this time hinata and his date go in someone else’s car so you and tsukki get some alone time

the car ride is you singing along to your music while also talking about stuff with tsukki

you guys end up going to a diner that’s open 24/7 and y’all end up sharing pancakes bc sharing is caring

also you both spent most of your money already 🥴

tsukki ends up taking to you home at like 2 am, way past his own bedtime (he insists on going to sleep before 11 pm)

he walks you to your door and gives you a lil’ peckafter he leaves, he texts you goodnight once he gets home

overall prom with tsukki is my dream and i really just wrote this for myself to make up for my shitty prom experience 🤩✨

Dancing in The Headlights~ (Natsuya, Ikuya, Asahi, Rin, Aii, Hiyori, Seijuro)

I definitely see this little scenario happening with Natsuya☺️ he will most definitely join her no shame. Even if they’re not the best dancers it doesn’t matter! It’s all about having fun! He might actually be the one to jump on the roof of the car to spin her 🥰 They’re both enjoying the moment, laughing and dancing, having the absolute time of their lives. Nothing else in the world matters right now. he’ll finish it off by dipping her really low then bringing her back up for a longgg kiss. It gets really hot real soon. Also it’s literally midnight mind you, so rip ur neighbors 😆

Ikuya is so startled aww. He has his arms crossed and refuses to make a fool of himself right infront of the house where everyone can see them. So she’ll start it off slow, getting him into the feeling. Soon enough, Ikuya will lose himself in the music, while he’s too flustered to make any of his own moves, he just has his arms around her the whole time, pink cheeks.

Asahi gets so flustered too, but eventually he losens up and starts having fun. I mean it’s just the look on her face! She seems so happy and carefree, how could he not join in? Although he’s super red the whole time 😆 He’s surprisingly a really good dancer!

Rin is someone else who suddenly gets really shy. Like sure this stuff happens in the movies and it’s very romantic (hence why she probably even did it in the first place) but he’s still embarrassed. After much much convincing, he finally gives in, muttering how cheesy she is. He’ll soon lose himself too tho, even singing along 😆 he’s actually having so much fun twirling her and everything. Eventually tho, he’s going to switch the radio to a slow song for them to both catch their breath 💕

Aww baby Aii 🥺 he’s such a shy little boy. He keeps shaking his head, blushing, while she keeps insisting. He’s off in the corner for a bit shyly watching her, until she finally takes his hand and drags him into the middle, twirling him around and making him dance. He’ll still be super shy and stiff the whole time, but he’ll smile knowing that she’s having this much fun. She’ll start poking and tickling him, and that’s probably all the real action your getting out of him

Hiyori would be a mix of Aii and Ikuya. Originally he’ll get pretty startled, but then he’ll get super shy and blushy. However, he can see how happy this makes her, so he’ll give her a few twirls. That’s not enough for her though as she wants Hiyori to have a good time too! So she pulls him to her and begins swaying, eventually spinning round and round with him. He’ll end up having so much fun too, It’ll send his glasses flying

Seijuro, like Natsuya, is totally down for this too. He also lets out a “HELL YEAH!” Before jumping out and joining her. Sei is a really good dancer too! They’re just totally vibing~ He’ll show her the time of her life, spinning, twirling, swaying to the beat, even lifts her up high in the air. Also up for some of those bold moves too if ya catch my drift~ To him, the only music he hears is her laughter🥺 Anyone driving by can totally see that these two are having A BLAST. Okay irrelevant but Rihanna is a fucking queen I love her
