Axel Ruley x Verbo Flow

A little bit of optimism is creeping into the air as Dusted writers start to get their shots. We’re all starting to think about live music, maybe outside, maybe this summer. But as the spate of freak snow storms demonstrates, summer’s not here yet, and in the meantime, piles of records and gigs of MP3s beckon. This early spring version of Dust covers the map, literally, with artists representing Pakistan, Australia, Canada, Sweden, the UK and the USA, and stylistically with jazz, rock, punk, rap, improv and many other genres in play. Contributors include Jennifer Kelly, Justin Cober-Lake, Bill Meyer, Ray Garraty, Patrick Masterson, Tim Clarke and Bryon Hayes.

Arooj Aftab — Vulture Prince (New Amsterdam)

Arooj Aftab is a classical composer originally from Pakistan but now living in Brooklyn. Vulture Prince, her third full-length album, blends the bright clarity of new age music with the fluid, non-Western vocal tones of her Central Asian roots. “Last Night,” from an old Rumi poem but sung mostly in English, lilts in dub-scented syncopation, the thump and pop of stand-up bass underlining its bittersweet melody. An interlude in some other language shifts the song entirely, pitting vintage reggae reverberation against an exotic melisma. “Mohabbat” (which is apparently Urdu for sex) soothes in the pristine instrumentals, lucid guitars, a horn, scattered drumbeats, but smolders and beckons in the vocals. None of these tracks feel wholly traditional or wholly Western and modern day, but sit somewhere in a well-lit, idealized space. Timeless and placeless, Vulture Prince is nonetheless very beautiful.

Assertion — Intermission (Spartan)

Intermission comes from an alternate timeline. Founding drummer William Goldsmith started his musical career in Sunny Day Real Estate and had a notable stint with Foo Fighters. To cut the biography short, Goldsmith took a decade off from the music industry. He's returned now with Assertion, joined by guitarist/vocalist Justin Tamminga and bassist Bryan Gorder (both of Blind Guides, among other acts). This band picks up in the late 1990s, imagining a new path for post-hardcore/post-grunge music. The trio's name suits, as the songs' energy and the lyrical assertiveness develops the intensity of the release. The group works carefully with dynamics, neither parroting the loud-quiet tradition nor simply pushing their emo leanings toward 11.

“The Lamb to the Slaughter Pulls a Knife” epitomizes the album. The track sounds like Foo Fighters decided to get dirtier rather than more arena-friendly, while the lyrics mix violence with emotional persistence. First single “Supervised Suffering” finds triumph in endurance, turning the aggressive chorus into something of a victory. “Set Fire” closes the album with something more delicate, but it's just the gauze over a seething anger. Goldsmith's time off seems to have served him well, as does collaborating with some new partners. Assertion makes its case clearly and effectively, and if the intermission's over for Goldsmith, the second half sounds promising.

Michael Beach — Dream Violence (Goner/Poison City)

“De Facto Blues,” from Michael Beach’s fourth solo album, is a barn-burner of a song, rough and messy and passionate, the kind of song that makes you want to take a stand on something, who cares what as long as it matters to you. It snarls like Radio Birdman, slashes like the Wipers and follows its muse through chaos to righteousness like an off-cut from Crazy Horse, just back from rockin’ the free world. It’s got Matt Ford and Inez Tulloch from Thigh Master on guitar and bass, respectively, Utrillo Kushner from Colossal Yes (and Comets on Fire) on drums, and Kelley Stoltz at the boards, and it’s a killer. The rest of the album is varied and, honestly, not uniformly astounding, but there’s a nice Summer of Love-style psych dream in “Metaphysical Dice,” a slow-burning post-rocker in the title track and a driving, pounding punk anthem in the opener “Irregardless.” Beach has been splitting his time between San Francisco and Melbourne, Australia, and lately settled on Melbourne, where he will fit like a native into their thriving punk-garage scene.

Bloop — Proof (Lumo)

The trumpet is already a catalog of sound effects waiting to happen, and Lina Allemano knows the table of contents by heart. So, to shake things up, she has paired up with electronic musician Mike Smith, who contributes live processing and effects to Allemano’s improvisations. A blind listen to Proof might leave you with the impression that you’re hearing a horn player jamming with some outer space cats, and we’re not talking about hip, lingo-slinging jazz dudes. In fact, everything on these eight tracks happened in real time. Smith’s a strategic intervener, aware that too much sauce can spoil the stew, so he mixes up precise layering and pitch-shifting with more disorienting transformations. It’s hard to say how much Allemano responds to the simulacra that surround her brass voice, but there’s no denying the persuasiveness of her melodic and timbral ideas.

Bris — Tricky Dance Moves (TrueStory Entertainment)

Bris left some music behind when he died in 2020, but it took almost a year to shape these recordings into a proper CD. The label CEO Mac J (a fine artist himself) could easily capitalize on his friend’s death, stacking Tricky Dance Moves with features from the artists Bris never would have worked with. Yet the album was prepared with the utmost care, not giving an ugly Frankenstein monster feel. Bris’s references to his possible early death are scattered throughout the whole tape: “Heard they wanna pop Bris cause they mad I’m poppin.” Almost every song could be easily turned into a prophetic tale (a cheap move one wants to avoid at all costs). Nonetheless, something is missing here. Or maybe it is just an image of death that disturbs the whole picture, making us realize that this is the last we’d hear from Bris.

Dreamwell — Modern Grotesque (self-released)

I recently read an interview with Providence’s Dreamwell breaking down in almost excruciating detail the influences that led to the quintet’s sophomore full-length Modern Grotesque. I kept scrolling past Daughters and Deftones and Deafheaven and increasingly disconnected influences like The Mountain Goats and Nina Simone. I went back to the top and looked again. I typed Ctrl+F and put in “Thursday.” Nothing. This is preposterous. I may not be in the post-hardcore trenches the way I once was, but even I’d know a good Full Collapse homage if it swung a mic right into my face the way this one did; hell, just listen to “The Lost Ballad of Dominic Anneghi” and tell me singer Keziah Staska doesn’t know every single word of “Paris in Flames.” That may not look like flattery on a first read, but too often, bands striding the emo/pop divide have chased the latter into sub-Taking Back Sunday oblivion; what Thursday did was much harder, and Dreamwell has ably taken up the torch here. That they did it unintentionally is a curious, bewildering footnote.

Paul Dunmall / Matthew Shipp / Joe Morris / Gerald Cleaver — The Bright Awakening (Rogue Art)

It’s a bit perplexing that reeds player Paul Dunmall hasn’t spent more time playing with American musicians. He’s firmly situated within the English improvisation community, where he’s perhaps best known for his longer tenure with the quartet Mujician, and his ability to double on bagpipes has allowed him to establish links between improvised and folk music. But

his jazz-rooted approach makes him a natural to work in settings such as this one. When Dunmall toted his tenor to the Vision Festival in 2012 (even then, it could be costly to lug multiple horns on a plane), he found three sympatico partners in Fest regulars pianist Matthew Shipp, double bassist Joe Morris and drummer Gerald Cleaver. They all hit the ground running, generating a barrage of pulsing, roiling sound for over 20 minutes before the piano and drums peel off, leaving Morris to sustain momentum alone. Dunmall’s gruff, spiraling lines find common cause with each of his fellows, and the gradual addition and subtraction of players from that point makes it easier to hear the exchange of ideas, which often seem to take place between dyads operating within the larger flow.

Editrix — Tell Me I’m Bad (Exploding in Sound)

Wendy Eisenberg’s rock band is like her solo output in that it snarls delicate, self-aware, mini-short stories in complex tangles of guitar, hemming in high, sing-song-y verses with riffs and licks of daunting difficulty. The main differences are speed, volume and aggression (i.e. it rocks.) and a certain communal energy. That’s down to two collaborators who can more than keep up, Josh Daniel on surging, rattling, break-it-all-down percussion and Steve Cameron, equally anarchic and fast on bass. The title track is an all-out rager, thrusting jagged arena riffs of guitar and bass forward, then clearing space for off-kilter verses and time-shifting, irregular instrumental interplay. “Chelsea” follows a similar chaotic pattern, setting up a teeth-shaking cadence of rock instruments, with Eisenberg keening over the top of it. “I know, perfectly well, that we’re not safe, safe from the men in power,” she croons, engaged in the knotting difficulties of the world as we know it, but winning.

Elephant Micah — Vague Tidings (Western Vinyl)

The new Elephant Micah album, the follow-up to 2018’s excellent Genericana, has an apposite title. Vague Tidings conveys an atmosphere of feeling conscious of something carried on the wind, a story passed on that may have shifted through various iterations, leaving only a sense of its original meaning. All that can be sure is that this is sad, sober music, unafraid to brace against the chill of mortality and speak of all that is felt. The instruments — guitar, piano, percussion, violin and woodwinds — move around Joseph O’Connell’s voice in stiff yet graceful arcs, distanced by an unspoken etiquette. Repetitive melodic figures, stark yet steady, gradually accumulate weight as they roll along like tumbleweeds. It’s a crisp, forlorn country-blues, in no hurry to get nowhere, carrying ancient wisdom that seems to acknowledge the empty resonance of its own import.

Fraufraulein — Solum (Notice Recordings)

Fraufraulein’s music is immersive. Anne Guthrie and Billy Gomberg beam themselves, and us along with them, Quantum Leap-style directly into multiple environments in medias res. Through the clever employment of field recordings, they transport us to a hurricane-addled beach, performing a voice/piano duet as driftwood missiles careen through the air. In another “episode,” the manipulation of small objects conjures up the intimacy of a water garden filled with windchimes. Partners in both life and art, Guthrie and Gomberg are also consummate solo artists. He is a master of spike-textured drones, while she explores the intimate properties of physical entities. Like a child tends to resemble one parent while borrowing subtle traits from the other, Solum identifies more with Guthrie’s electroacoustic tendencies than it does with Gomberg’s electronics. This is in stark contrast to 2015’s Extinguishment, which felt a little more balanced between those two modes. Both approaches work, yet Solum feels more meticulously crafted and nuanced. Careful listening unveils multiple subtle tones and textures, and each piece is an adventure for the ears.

Gerrit Hatcher / Rob Magill / Patrick Shiroishi — Triplet Fawns (Kettle Hole)

The album’s title implies a crew you wouldn’t want on your yard; while those adolescent ungulate appetites do a number on your bushes, the hooves are hacking up your grass. But if they knocked on your door, saxophone cases in their respective hands, you could do worse than invite them around the back for some blowing. Hatcher, Magill and Shiroishi present with sufficient lung power to be heard fine without the reflective assistance of walls, even when they aren’t making like Sonore (that was Gustafsson, Vandermark, and Brötzmann, about a dozen years back). This album, which was released in a micro-edition of 100 CD-Rs on Hatcher’s Kettle Hole imprint, builds gradually from restrained melancholy to pointillistic jousting to a climactic blow-out, and the assured development of each piece suggests that each player was listening not only to what each of the others was doing, but where the music was headed.

A.Karperyd — GND (Novoton)

On his second solo release, GND, Swedish artist Andreas Karperyd broodingly ruminates on snatches of musical ideas that have been percolating in his consciousness over extended periods. Anyone familiar with his 2015 debut, Woodwork, will find these 55 minutes similarly immersive, as Karperyd manipulates live instruments such as piano and strings into shimmering, alien tapestries. Opener “The Well-Defined Rules of Certainty” appears to take Fennesz’s Venice as its blueprint, issuing forth cascading, percolating tones that tickle the ears. “The Desire to Invoke Balance with Our Eyes Closed” and “Failures and Small Observations” have a Satie-esque elegance to their piano lines, albeit refracted via a hall of mirrors. The 12-minute “Reminiscence of Tar” sounds like a slow-motion pan across the hulking mass of a shadowy space station. And closing track “Mummification of an Empire” slowly fries its piano in static, then unfurls wistful melodica and throbbing synth across the wreckage.

Kiwi Jr. — Cooler Returns (Subpop)

Kiwi Jr.’s brash, brainy indie pop punk vibrates with nervy energy, like the first Feelies album or Violent Femmes’ 1983 debut or that one great S-T from the Soft Pack. Those are all opening salvos for their respective bands, but this one is a second outing, suffering not a bit from sophomore slackening. Instead, Cooler Returns tightens up everything that was already stinging on the Toronto band’s debut and adds a giddy careening glee. An oddball thread of Robin Hood-ness runs through the disc, with Sherwood forest getting a nod in the title track and “Maid Marian’s Toast” tipping the love interest, but these songs are anything but archaic. “Undecided Voters,” the single jangles harder than anything I’ve heard since Woolen Men, slyly upending creative pretensions in a verse that goes: “You take a photo of the CN tower/you take another of the Honest Ed sign/Well, I take photos of your photos/and they really move people.” Has it been done before? Maybe. Does it move us. Yes indeed.

Kool John — Get Rich, Die $moppin ($moplife Entertainment)

A year ago, Kool John was shot six times. Yet you wouldn’t know about it from the general mood of Get Rich, Die $moppin, his first tape since then. He does name one song “6 Shots” and explicitly mentions the shooting accident a few times on other songs, but his bouncy music says he wasn’t hurt bad after all. The beats perfectly match the rhymes, playfully ignorant and ignorantly playful. Kool John still doesn’t mix with broke people, doesn’t return calls if it’s not about money and “doesn’t get stressed out.” Instead, he gets high. His new tape is nothing groundbreaking, even though he’s pretending that is: “If I had no legs I’d still be outstanding.”

Nick Mazzarella / Quin Kirchner — See or Seem: Live at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival (Out Of Your Head)

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this recording is that the titular festival happened at all. While most festivals either canceled or went on line, Chicago’s Hyde Park Jazz Festival dealt with COVID by spreading out. Instead of big stages and indoor shows, last September it staged little pop-up events on sidewalks and in parks. So, if the sound of See or Seem feels a bit diffuse, it’s because it was recorded with a device propped in front of two guys playing on a grassy median. There are moments when the buzz of bugs rises up for a second behind Nick Mazzarella’s darting alto sax and Quin Kirchner’s brisk, mercurial beats. But the thrill of actually playing in front of some people (or actually being surrounded by them; when there’s no stage and social distancing is in effect, it makes sense to walk slow circles around the performers) infuses this music, extracting an extra ounce of joyousness from Mazzarella’s free, boppish lines, and adding a restlessness charge to the drumming, as though Kirchner really wanted to squeeze as much music as possible into this 31-minute set. This release is part of Out Of Your Head Records’ Untamed series of download-only albums recorded under less than pristine conditions. A portion of each title’s income is directed to a charity of the artists’ choice; the duo selected St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Dean McPhee — Witch’s Ladder (Hood Faire)

Finger-picked melodies cut through haunted landscapes of echo and hum on this fourth LP from the British guitarist Dean McPhee. Track titles like “The Alchemist” and “Witch’s Ladder” evoke the supernatural, as does the spectral ambient tone, reminiscent of Chuck Johnson’s recent Cinder Grove or Mark Nelson’s last Pan•American album. Yet while an e-bow traces ghostly chills through “The Alder Tree,” there’s also a grounding in lovely, well-rooted folk forms; it’s like seeing a familiar landscape in moonlight, well-known landmarks suddenly turned unearthly and strange. The long closing title track has an introspective air. Pensive, jazz-infused runs flower into bright bursts of notes, not quite blues, not quite folk, not quite jazz, not quite anything but gorgeous.

Moontype — Bodies of Water (Born Yesterday)

Margaret McCarthy’s voice swims across your headphones like being on an innertube drifting languidly downstream. Typically, saying someone’s vocals are like water indicates a degree of timidity or laziness, obscured in reverb or simply buried by the mix, but on Moontype’s debut LP, it’s a compliment: McCarthy floats across the different styles of music she makes with guitarist Ben Cruz and drummer Emerson Hunton. You notice it not just because she often sings of water or because it’s right there in the title, but also because the Chicago trio hasn’t settled on any particular style yet — just listen to the three-song stretch at the heart of the record where achingly beautiful alt-country ballad “3 Weeks” leads into “When You Say Yes,” a sub-three-minute power-pop number Weezer ought to be jealous of, followed immediately by crunching alt-rock swoon and first single “Ferry.” All the while, McCarthy lets her melodies drift to the will of the songs. I’m reminded of recent efforts from Great Grandpa, Squirrel Flower and Lucy Dacus, but the brief, jazzy curveball of “Alpha” is a peek into whole other possibilities. Bodies of Water is a fine record, but perhaps its most exciting aspect is how much ground you can see Moontype has already conquered. One can’t help but wonder what sonic worlds awash in water await.

Rob Noyes / Joseph Allred — Avoidance Language (Feeding Tube)

The 12-string guitar can emit such a prodigious amount of sound, and there are two of them on Avoidance Language. If Joseph Allred and Rob Noyes had planned things out in order to avoid canceling each other out, they might never have picked their instruments up, so they just started playing and listening. The result is not so much a summing of two broad spectrums of sound, but an instinctual blending of similar textures that ends up sounding significantly different from what either musician does on their own. Even when Allred switches to harmonium or banjo, as he does on the album’s two shorter tracks, the music rushes in torrential fashion. Their collaboration is so compatible that it often seems more like a recital for one big stringed thing played by one four-handed musician than a doubled instrumental duet.

NRCSSSST — S-T (Slimstyle)

There’s no “I” in NRCSSSST but there’s plenty of swagger. The Atlanta-based synth pop band, formed around Coathangers drummer and singer Stephanie Luke and Dropsonic’s Dan Dixon, taunts and teases in its opening salvo “All I Ever Wanted.” Luke rasps appealingly atop Spoon-style piano banging, and big shout along choruses erupt from sudden flares of synths. It’s all hedonism, but done with conviction. You haven’t heard a big rock song kick up this much fun in ages. “Love Suicide” bangs just as hard, its bass line muttering like a crazy person, unstable and ready to explode (and yet it doesn’t, it maintains its restraint even when the rest of the cut goes deliriously off the rails). Dixon can really sing, too, holding the long vibrating notes that lift these prickly jams into anthemry. It’s been a while since a band reminded me of INXS and U2 without sucking, but here we are. Sometimes guilty pleasures are just pleasures.

Zeena Parkins / Mette Rasmussen /Ryan Sawyer — Glass Triangle (Relative Pitch)

Harpist Zeena Parkins and Ryan Sawyer have a long-standing partnership in the trio substitutes Moss Garden, a chamber improv ensemble with pianist Ryan Ross. But swapping in Danish alto saxophonist Mette Rasmussen brings about a change, not just in instrumentation, but attitude. She plays free jazz like a punk, impatient and aggressive, and Parkins and Sawyer are up for the challenge. This music often plays out like a battle between two titans, one blowing and the other pummeling, while Parkins seeks to liquify the ground upon which they stand. She sticks exclusively to an electric harp whose effects-laden tone is disorientingly alien, blinking beacon-like one moment, low as a backhoe engage in earth removal the next. The combination of new and old relationships promotes a combination of instability and trust that yields splendid results.

claire rousay — A Softer Focus (American Dreams)

In film, soft focus is a technique of contrast reduction that lends a scene a dreamlike quality. With A Softer Focus, claire rousay imbues her already intimate compositions with a noctilucent aura. She has created a dreamworld with sound. One glimpse at the glowing flowers that grace the cover art created by visual artist Dani Toral, with whom rousay closely collaborated on this release, and the illusory nature of the record is revealed. The reds, oranges, blues and purples of deep twilight are reflected in both the textures rousay weaves into her soundscapes and the visual themes that Toral conjures. Violin, cello, piano and synth are the musical origins of this warmth, which rousay wraps around environments crafted from the sounds of everyday life. She recorded herself moving about her apartment, visiting a farmer’s market, observing kids playing and just existing. These field recordings of the mundane, when coupled with the radiance of the musical elements, are magical. Snatches of conversation become incantations; auto-tuned vocals are the whisperings of spirits; fireworks explode into brilliant shards of crystal. With A Softer Focus, rousay takes a glimpse into the beauty of the everyday, showing us just how precious our most humdrum moments can be.

Axel Rulay must be kicking himself right now. With more than three million plays on the original version and more than five million on the remix that adds verses from Farruko and El Alfa into the fray, the Dominican is cruising into our second pandemic summer with an unbeatable poolside anthem — and to think, after years of clawing his way up through the industry dregs, working to get his name out there, all he had to do was make himself the chorus over Venezuelan producer Manybeat’s 2019 tropical house trip “El Tiempo.” Presto: Massive visibility in the Spanish-speaking world and a song that ought to transcend any linguistic barriers unlocked even if the best I can manage is a title that translates as “If It’s Trout It’s Trout.” Expect that long-desired Daddy Yankee collabo to follow any day now.

Rx Nephew — Listen Here Are You Here to Hear Me (NewBreedTrapper)

Rochester rapper Rx Nephew trailed brother-turned-archrival-turned-back Rx Papi’s coming out party 100 Miles and Walk’in by just a few weeks with the 53-minute all-in proposition Listen Here Are You Here to Hear Me. Unlike Papi’s Max B-ish smoothness, Nephew is all rough n’ tumble through these 17 tracks, provocative pump action with narrative bursts of violence and street hustling delivered with a verve most akin to DaBaby or, in some of his more elastic enunciations, peak Ludacris. A recent Creative Hustle interview provides some insight: The first time he went into the booth, “I didn’t write anything. I just started talking about selling crack and robbing people.” The stories haven’t stopped since. If he can keep putting out music as engaging as Listen Here…, Rx Nephew is destined for more than just the margins; until then, we have one of the year’s densest rap records to hold the line.

Nick Schofield — Glass Gallery (Backward Music)

Nick Schoefield, out of Montreal, composed these 13 tracks entirely on a vintage Prophet 600, the first synthesizer to designed to employ the then-new MIDI standard established by the instrument’s inventor Dave Smith and Roland’s Ikutaru Kakahashi. The instrument has a lovely, crystalline quality, floating effortless arpeggios through vaulting sonic spaces. Though clearly synthesized, these pieces of music resonate in serene and peaceful ways, evoking light, water, air and contemplation with a simplicity that evokes Japan. “Water Court” drips notes of startling purity into deep pools of tone-washed whoosh and hum. “Snow Blue Square” flutters an oboe-like melody over eddying gusts of keyboard motifs. The pieces fit together with calm precision, leading from one beautiful space to the next like a stroll through a museum.

Archie Shepp — Blasé And Yasmina Revisited (Ezz-thetics)

The Ezz-thetics campaign to keep the best of mid-20th century free jazz on CD shelves (yes, CD, not streaming or LP) breaches the walls of the BYG catalog with a disc that issues one and a half albums from Archie Shepp’s busy week in August 1969. Blasé is a stand-out for the participation of singer Jeanne Lee, whose indomitable and flexible delivery as equal to the demands of material that’s be turns pungently earthy and steeped in antiquity. But the rest of the band, which includes Philly Joe Jones, Dave Burrell, some harmonica players, and a couple members of the Art Ensemble, is also more than equal to the task of filtering the blues and Ellingtonia through the gestures of the then-contemporary avant-garde. “Yasmina,” which originally occupied one side of another LP, makes sense here as an extension of the raw, rippling “Touareg,” the last tune on Blasé, into exultantly African territory.

Juanita Stein — Snapshot (Handwritten)

Juanita Stein was the cool, serene, Mazzy Star-evoking vocal presence in the Aussie dream-gaze outfit Howling Bells, and she plays more or less the same role on her third solo album. Yet she is also the source of mayhem here, kicking up an angst of guitar-freaked turmoil on “1,2,3,4,5,6” then soothing it away with singing, hanging long threads of feedback from the thump-thump-thumping blues-rock architecture of “L.O.T.F.” and crooning dulcetly, but with a little yip, in the trance-y title track. This latter cut reflects on the death of her father, a kindred soul who wrote a couple of Howling Bells songs for her and passed away recently. It distills a palpable ache into pure, distanced poetry, finding a cool, dispassionate way to consider the mysteries of human loss.

The Tiptons Sax Quartet & Drums — Wabi Sabi (Sowiesound)

Wabi Sabi by Tiptons Sax Quartet & Drums

Over its 30 years together, the Tiptons Sax Quartet has done less to hone its sound and more to figure out how many styles to embrace. The group (typically a soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone sax joined by percussion and even including some vocals) can dig into trad jazz but sounds more at home in exploration, adapting world music or other traditional American styles. The title of their latest album, Wabi Sabi refers to the Japanese concept of finding beauty in and accepting imperfection. The Tiptons, despite that sentiment, don't approach their play with a sloppy sound; in fact, they're as tight as ever. The understanding of impermanence and imperfection does help contextualize their risk-taking. When they turn to odd yodeling on “Moadl Joadl,” they find joy in an odd vocal moment that highlights expression and discovery over formal rigor. When they tap in New Orleans energy for “Jouissance,” we can connect the dots between parades and funerals, celebrating all the while. The whole album serves as a tour of styles and moods, always with an energetic potency. If it's more of the same from the Tiptons, that just means continuance of difference.

Breathe with me. Chapter 13

Chapter 12 here

It was another crazy night in the bar. As per her usual, Lina was running from table to table taking orders from clients, carrying heavy trays with food and drinks, dealing with Mike’s temper. Her arms were hurting from heavy trays, she couldn’t feel her back and her feet were killing her.

-First table, now. - Mike growled at her.

Quickly Lina made her way to the table though the crowd and pulled a notepad and a pen out of the back pocket of her jeans.

-Hello-she said not raising her eyes from notepad-made your choice already?

-Yes.

Lina heard a familiar voice and raised her eyes to see Liam sitting at the table. She smiled brightly.

-This is an unexpected surprise. OK, what would you like?

-You. - Liam said in a low voice.

Lina arched an eyebrow and smirked, but remembering that Mike was always watching everyone, tried to look unaffected.

-But I will settle for whiskey and any food you will bring me. - He said with a sigh.

-Deluxe burger? - she asked.

Remembering his first time here, Liam’s face lit up.

Lina nodded and went back to her work.

Liam was sitting and watching her working all night. Some customers were friendly, but others were rude and demanding. One even tried to slap Lina’s ass as she was walking past his table. Liam was watching Mike who never seemed to be happy or even pleased. He kept lecturing Lina and her colleagues all the time and Liam felt more and more irritated and angry but didn’t interfere. It didn’t look like Lina sat down even once or had time to relax and rest at all.

Finally the last customer left the bar, Lina changed in the back room and came out of it. Liam was waiting for her by the bar and he gently took her hand in his.

-Tired? - he asked.

-It could have been worse. - Lina lied giving him a quick kiss.

-Let’s go, you need a bath and massage-Liam said wrapping an arm around her waist and leading her to the door.

-Oh, you have no idea how much I love…-Lina stopped herself before the words would escape her lips-massages-she finished.

Lina woke up in the morning feeling well rested and refreshed despite a wild night she had with Liam.

Carefully she tried to get out of the bed but Liam’s arm pulled her back and close to him to hug her tight.

-Good morning, babe. Where are you going without a kiss? - Liam asked with a sleepy voice.

-Nowhere, I just woke up and… - Liam didn’t let her finish and shut her up with a kiss.

They spent another five minutes just holding each other until Liam let her go and rolled out of the bed.

-OK, no time to waste, I have big plans for us. Join me for breakfast when you are ready. - Liam said, put on a robe and left the bedroom.

Confused, Lina shrugged and went to the bathroom. After a shower she joined Liam on the terrace.

She served herself a plate of food. Liam was checking news on his phone while Lina was enjoying just spending some quiet time looking at him. She knew that what she agreed to was foolish, insane but she didn’t want to go through the pain of not having him in her life again. She had no idea what the future would bring but she was grateful just for those moments.

He doesn’t even spend the honeymoon with his wife. Maybe what we are doing is not really wrong. Does it even count if his marriage is so strange?

Once breakfast was finished, Liam got up from his chair.

-Join me? There are some things I want to talk about. It’s about… us. - He said reaching out his hand to hold hers.

Lina nodded and they walked to the couch.

-Before we talk just promise me not to get mad. - Liam said eyeing her cautiously.

-You are scaring me, Liam. I can’t promise not to get mad. Just say it. - Lina said nervously.

-OK, but remember that I say it with best intentions. Lin, babe, I really didn’t like what I saw last night in the bar. I don’t think that you should keep working there.

That’s it? That’s what he was going to talk about? Phew. It’s not my dream job either but well… it pays my bills, doesn’t it?

-Well-she replied-it’s not the best job in the world but until I find something better, it will do.

Liam shook his head.

-Well-he copied her tone- I think that you can stop working there until you find a better job. You shouldn’t work at nights, and certainly not in the place where drunk men are trying to put their hands on you. - He said with heat in his voice. - You don’t have to keep doing this.

The moment he said it Lina knew where it was going. She wasn’t naive but she didn’t expect exactly this.

-Liam, are you trying to say that you will pay my bills so I wouldn’t have to work there? - she asked without emotion but with anger in her eyes.

Liam sensed a swing in her mood quickly trying to think of something, how to reach his goal and not to piss her off at the same time.

-Lin, don’t get upset. Is that so wrong that I want to take care of you? Please, allow me to do that. I care about you a lot and I want only the best for you. Please, allow me to take care of things, let me do it for you.

Lina narrowed her eyes at Liam.

-You are trying to make me a kept woman. Like being your mistress is not enough, now you want to make me a woman that takes money from her married boyfriend. By the way, can a married man to still be called someone’s boyfriend? Because I am not sure, I know I am a lover and a mistress, but I am not sure about…

-Lin, stop. - Liam interfered before she would start to yell at him. - You know our situation. You can’t take that marriage seriously. I am here with you on this goddamn honeymoon, I am not with her. Can you say that that’s how marriage works?

Lina shook her head but didn’t reply.

-Don’t put any labels on yourself or on me. You aren’t my mistress and you wouldn’t be my kept woman. You are the woman I…. care about. Money means nothing, we are in a relationship and there is nothing wrong if your man wants to take care of you, to give you everything you deserve. I don’t want to see you in that goddamn place again. Lin, please, it’s between us, you and me. It’s just our business and nobody’s else. If you are worried about what people will think or say then don’t. Who will know about it and who would care? You can get a job anytime you want, just not that.

Sadly Lina looked at him.

-You think I didn’t try to get a better job? You think I like waiting tables when I have a degree? I did and I still do but it’s not that easy in New York.

Liam pulled Lina to him embracing her in his arms. Lina wondered how does it work, she was angry and upset one moment but just a hug from him was enough to calm her and make her want to stay like that forever.

-I know, Lin.- Liam said pushing her closer. - I don’t doubt that you are capable of taking care of yourself, you have always done so, I know. But now you have me, you are not alone. Is it so wrong that I want to be there for you and to take care of you? Would you feel different if I wasn’t married?

Lina shook her head into his chest.

-It would be the same, Liam. I don’t want to use you, your status or your money. I want to be with you for yourself, not because you are a Prince… A King-she quickly corrected herself.-I will never take advantage of it, I don’t want to use you and I want to stand on my own feet, not to depend on a man.

Liam pulled away and gently cupped her face in his hands.

-I would never think that, babe. You are not taking advantage and you are not using me. It’s totally my idea, I know the truth and that’s enough. You are with me and there is nothing wrong with it, do it for me-he pleaded mockingly trying to lighten the mood. - Please, please, please?

Lina shook her head at Liam.

-You know, you’re such a baby sometimes…. I am not sure. I am not angry, not anymore. Well maybe a bit. But that’s just wrong.

-It’s not wrong, babe. - Liam felt that she was about to give up. - it’s the most normal and natural thing in the world. Working with drunk men who try to touch you-that’s wrong.

Lina saw anger written all over his face.

Does it upset him so much? I am so used to it by now that I hardly notice it.

-OK, Liam. We can do it… your way until I find a better job.

A wide smile spread on Liam’s face, he got what he wanted.

No more idiots around you, no more cutting nights short because of that silly job. Now we can enjoy each other without that annoying disturbance. And I plan to use every second of it. Why does she have to label everything? We are just a man and a woman who enjoy each other’s company. I bet that most of the women I know wouldn’t mind it. Who cares about money? Not me anyway.

Satisfied and happy, he began to cover Lina’s face with kisses. She couldn’t help it, all the thoughts vanished from her head as soon as his lips touched her skin. She was defenceless against him and would do whatever he asked from her right now.

It’s temporary. I will find a job that I like. I am lying to myself. That’s wrong on so many levels. I gave up too easily. Should have fought for what’s right.

Despite her conflicted thoughts, Lina didn’t feel as bad as she thought she should. She felt safe, she felt that he cared about her, maybe more than he was willing to admit.

She pushed him back in the sofa getting on top of him but Liam rolled her over and got off the couch.

-As much as I would love to spend next month with you on this couch, we should get going.

-Going where? - Lina asked confused rising on her arm.

-What do you mean where? First we go to your bar, don’t you need to inform them that you won’t work there anymore?

-Today? - she asked unsure.

-Yes, you worked in that hole too long as it is. I am not watching another man puts his hands on you.

-But Liam, it doesn’t work like that. I can’t just go and say that I quit. I need to give him a warning and then wait till he finds someone to replace me. It’s the weekend! Mike will kill me. I will quit next week or the week after, and tonight I’ll tell Mike.

Liam shook his head.

-Babe, no. It’s not your problem if he has someone to replace you or not. You can’t really spend two more weeks there. You would steal that time from us - and for what?

Liam clenched his fists remembering last night, anger towards her job was now taking over him.

Really, why is it so difficult for her? She shouldn’t go back there ever. What if something happens to her when I am not around? What if some drunk asshole does something to her? No way. I must to do more, I must to find a way to protect her.

Liam didn’t expect that he would feel this way about Lina. It was a new feeling for him but he knew just one thing - he wanted to shield her from anything and everything, he had to make sure that she was happy and had anything she wanted.

I know I didn’t handle it the best way, probably she doesn’t like the whole idea but I did what needed to be done. It’s for the best.

-Fine, you are right but don’t get used to it. I’ll do it but only because…Damn, I don’t even know why I am doing any of this.

Lina tensed and walked to the bedroom to get dressed.

Why did I agree to it? It must be nice to have money but what happened to the whole independence thing? I just agreed to become his kept woman. I still can say no. Turn around and say no. Do it.

Lina turned around to face Liam. He sensed her mood swing again, followed her to the bedroom door and covered her lips with his before she managed to say anything.

Will she stop worrying over this nonsense? I won’t share her with the night shifts, I won’t watch men getting handy with her.

-Go get ready, babe. We have a meeting after visiting that bar.-he said between the kisses.

-What meeting? - Lina asked trying to pull away and say what she meant to.

-That’s a surprise. We have a whole month and I have a lot of plans.

Lina admitted defeat. If she could have Liam for herself for a whole month, she didn’t want to start it with a fight or worse. Memories of the pain she endured for past months were still fresh. She didn’t mean to risk their so inconvenient, but so wanted relationships.

Lina nodded and finally went to the bedroom to change.

Tell Me Why - chapter 7

Hi,

I have come to the conclusion that I love the Drama because I watched too many soap operas when I was a kids, latin ones at that. Oh well... I dedicate the extra drama in this one to my dear friend, @taqueriaonamoon.

The bus makes a special detour to leave Charlie at her sister’s house and she honestly can’t wait any longer to be reunited with her family, “Charleh, yeh are ‘ere!! Boys, c’mere, Aunty Charleh is ‘ere!” Emily engulfs her sister in a hug, pulling her inside, “Hi, Em. ‘ow are yeh guys?” Em pulls away and takes a good look at Charlie, “yeh look different.” Charlie brushes her off and turns to great her nephews, “Nate darling, can you take aunty Charlotte’s bag to her room? Help him, Vi.” Emily pats her children in the back and they grunt before disappearing inside with Charlie’s things. The older woman pulls her inside and into the kitchen, closing the door, “There is something off with you.”

Emily squints at her, regarding Charlie from head to toe, “Em, stop being weird. Well, weirder than normal.” Emily shakes her head, sniffing Charlie’s shoulder and ultimately squeezing her breast, “Em, wot the fook?” Emily smiles broadly, “You are pregnant.” Charlie’s face falls and her posture falters, “W-What? ‘ave you lost yehr mind?” Emily crosses her arms in front of her chest, “Yeh can’t lie to meh, Charlie, I’ve ‘ad two kids. ‘ow maneh weeks?” Charlie gives up and sits at the kitchen table, “Almost 12.” Emily sits next to her sister, rubbing her back, “ ‘ey,mardy bum, wot’s wrong? Aren’t yeh ‘appeh?” Charlie sighs, pushing her hair away from her face, “I-I am, i-it’s joost I ddin’t want anehone to know yet. I-I’m not readeh.”

As she is pulled into another tight hug, Charlie chooses to snuggle close to her sister, cherishing the sense of home she carried, “ It’s gunna be alreight, love… Do yeh know who’s the father?” Charlie only nods in response, “Do I know ‘im?” The thing about Emily and Charlotte’s relationship was that being born only two years apart the girls grew very close, and even though they hadn’t lived together for more than 10 years now, they were very attuned to each other’s feelings and emotions, “Y-Yes…” Charlie’s voice is barely a whisper and in turn Emily sighs and hugs her closer, rocking her lightly in a soothing manner, almost as if Charlie was a small child herself.

“Is he from Sheff?” Charlie nods again, tears sprouting from her eyes, “Oh Charleh, I thought it’d been years since yeh two…” And for the first time since she found out about the pregnancy Charlie truly let herself breakdown, in the arms of her beloved sister, “Oh Charleh, it’s gunna be okeh.” The sobs rake through her slight body, emerging from deep with Charlotte, from all the doubts, and fears, and pain she’d kept bottled inside these past weeks, “Love, look at meh, yeh’ll end up making yehrself sick.” Charlie raises her head from her sister’s bossom and Emily wipes her face gently, “I’ll make yeh sum tea, ‘elp yeh calm down and we’ll talk about it, eh?” Charlie nods weakly, still sobbing lightly.

Emily gets up, swiftly putting the kettle on and setting up a plate of biscuits, “Yeh look joost like mum.” Remarks Chalie, nibbling on a chocolate digestive, “Well, I’ll take tha’ as a compliment.” Emily had indeed followed in their mother’s footsteps, from having two children to taking over the family’s beauty salon, “ ‘ere yeh go, joost as yeh like it.” Charlie blows into the steaming mug before taking a sip, appreciating a small token of warmth and homeliness, “I’ll never learn yerh way.”

“It’s love. Speakin’ of which…” Charlie rolls her eyes, “Don’t act like yerh the expert.” Fueled by her anger and lack of sleep Charlie has spoken without a second thought, “Em, I’m sorreh, yeh are only tryin’ to ‘elp and I’m being an asshole.” Emily waves her off, “I’ll let this one go, yeh are ‘urting. Plus, what ‘appened between Michael and I ‘as nofing to do wiv yehrs and Alex’s relationship.” The sound of his name brings back the near constant nausea in the pit of Charlie’s stomach, “Wot’s tha’ face? Charlie yous two ‘ave been in love with each other since yous were kids. Mike and I were a silly high school romance. All of ‘igh Green ‘as been waiting anxiously for their golden children to be togetha’.” Charlie cringes at her sister’s words.

“Emily, stop wiv tha’’ nonsense. Alex and I love each other as friends, this was a one off fing. ‘e were ‘urting and needed meh.” Emily scoffs, “Tell meh anotha’ lie, please. Alex were ‘urting so yeh shagged? When did it ‘appen?” Charlie blushes as she remembers the night, how detached still so connected they were, “After ‘e broke up wiv the witch.” Emily raises an eyebrow dramatically, “So ‘e’s free for the first time in three years and the first fing ‘e does is shag yeh? Yeh, tha’ boy realleh loves yeh like a sister.” Tears come back to Charlie’s eyes as if they’d found their permanent place on her face, “If ‘e loves meh so mooch then why does ‘e alreadeh ‘ave a new girlfriend, huh?”

Emily is at a loss, “Yeah, ‘ow the fook do I tell ‘im I’m pregnant when it was just anotha’ mindless shag in ‘is book? I can’t lose ‘im in meh life, specially not now!” Charlie feared Alex’s reaction would break her, his presence in her life was a constant she wasn’t ready to lose, ever. She couldn’t remember an important day in her life that he hadn’t been a part of and the mere thought of his rejection made her crumble. “I need time, Em. To figure this fing out.” Emily nods gravely, “ ‘Course, we’ll get through this. Together.” They hug once more for a brief moment, “Ok, now let’s move. Yeh should ‘ave sum time for a nap before the big luncheon, ugh.” They roll their eyes simultaneously, for different reasons.

The Monkey’s mothers had organized a welcome luncheon, taking advantage that the band had arrived a day early, at the Turner’s and Helders’ backyards which were adjacent and could be opened for big events like this. All families were invited for an afternoon of good old group fun, which both sisters dreaded. Charlie for Alex related reasons, whereas Emily had her own problems to deal with. Her former husband, Michael Cook, would be in attendance this afternoon and since the divorce the pair hadn’t been in the best terms. Emily put on a brave face in front of the kids, but she’d never imagined she’d end up in this situation where she couldn’t even have a civil conversation with the man who had been her partner for 10 years.

Emily leads her upstairs to her old room, which had become more of a guest room in recent years and soon Charlie is fast asleep, the stress of the last couple of days having taken it’s toll on her. However, her nap is short as soon Emily wakes her, “Charleh, wake up. We ‘ave to get going.” Charlie groans and turns away from her sister, “C’mon love, I’ve a surprise for yeh.” That perks her attention and Charlie raises her head, “Wot?” Emily groans, knowing the word surprise would get her sister’s attention, “It’s in the living room, come down and see. Get ready first, tho.”

Once Emily has left, Charlie gets up and diggs through her bag for an outfit and makeup. She changes into a simple sky blue tea length dress with a fluffy white cardigan on top, and after a quick brush of her hair and some light makeup, Charlie slips in her ballet flats and heads downstairs. As she turns into the living room Charlie finds her mum and dad sat on the couch, “Mum! Dad!” She is filled with joy at the sight of her parents sitting on the couch, “Charleh, me babeh!” Her mum, Margaret, gets up from the couch and embraces her youngest daughter tenderly.

“What are yeh guys doing ‘ere?” They pull apart so Charlie can hurt her dad, Pete, “We hadn’t seen yeh girls in forevah, yehr dad and I thought this was the perfect opportuniteh.” Emily emerges from the kitchen, “Kids, come down. We ‘ave to go.” Nate and Violet run downstairs and so the Jones family goes, walking the three blocks over to the celebration. Margaret walks arm in arm with Charlie, “Yeh look skinneh babeh, is everyfing okeh?” Charlie nods, giving her a hopefully reassuring smile, “Yes mum, ‘m perfect. Promise.” Her mum tuts.

“Yehr ‘air on tha’ other ‘and, it’s awfully long, Charlotte.” And so the motherly remarks begin, “I know mum, I’ll ‘ave Em cut it for meh before I leave.” Margaret stops them for a sec, taking charlie’s chin in her hand and inspecting her, “Yeh look different, there’s this… Glow about yeh, is there anything going on?” Charlie takes the hand away from her chin gently, “It’s just meh makeup, mum.” She moves them along and thankfully once they reach the celebration Margaret is distracted by her friends.

Charlie immediately spots Eily heading with the kids towards Jamie, Katie and Forrest who were talking to Alex and Louise. She excuses herself from her parents and heads over, “Hi guys.” Charlie gives Katie, who was chatting with Emily already, a hug since Jamie and Alex were too excited talking to Nate about music and guitars. Jamie had gotten him one for the past x-mas and since then that’s all the kid had been able to talk about. She kneels down to Forrest’s height, the small boy was being entertained by his cousin Vi and Louise, “Hey For, can aunty Charlie get a hug?” He notices and opens a wide smiles, “Aunty Charlie!”

The toddler throws himself into her arms, causing Charlie to nearly stumble back, “Story, story, story!” She chuckles, kissing his soft cheeks, “Later, love. Aunty promises.” Since Forrest mostly saw her at the bookstore for story time, or when she babysat for the Cooks, he had linked her to storytime, “Before your nap, baby.” Katie intervenes to avoid a tantrum and the toddler is soon distracted. Charlie stands up, “You are so good with him, Char, you’ll be a great mum someday.” Emily chokes on her drink and Charlie has to hold herself back not to glare at her sister.

Luckily everyone is distracted by a new arrival, “Mike’s ‘ere.” The kids noticed too and start running towards their dad. Charlie stands back, between Alex and Emily, linking arms with her sister. “ ‘ow long’s it been?” Emily downs her drink before answering, “Almost two months.” Charlie huffs and Alex takes her hand, squeezing it once, and she is thankful for his support. Michael reaches them with an arm around Nate’s shoulders and Violet hanging from the other, both kids beside themselves to have their dad there, “ ‘ello, ‘ello.” He is visibly altered, at 2pm in the afternoon, at a family event, “Hey Mike, I have to feed Forrest right now. Kids, do you want to come with us?” Katie had sensed the incoming conflict and picked up her son, asking her nephews to join them brought some relief to Emily, “Go babehs, try and find yehr grandparents.”

Alex also felt the fight brewing, as he was well aware of the Cook’s temperament, “Babeh, why don’t yeh go wiv them? I’ll be reight there.” Louise took her queue and follows after Katie, “What were yeh thinking, Michael?” Showing up to a family event plastered liked this?” Michael moves towards Emily, “Yeh are no longer meh wife, Emily. So shut the fook up and go back to yehr silly little chats about ‘air or shite.” Charlie can see jamie’s hands curling up into fists and moves closer to Emily.

“It’s not about meh, yeh wanker. It’s about our kids, who ‘adn’t seen their poor excuse of a dad for nearly two months!” The next few seconds happened in slow motion for Charlotte. She sees Michael charge towards Emily and steps in front of her sister, receiving the slap that had been intended for her. The whole party quiets down as she is thrown into her sister’s arms and Alex grips Michael by the collar, throwing a punch to his nose. Before the fight started Jamie held Michael back and their parents intervened.

Margaret takes a hysterical Emily into the Helders’, while Jamie and his father drag Michael away from the whole thing. Alex and Charlie are herded by Penny into her kitchen, where she takes care of them just like when they were kids and scraped their knees biking. Charlie is sitting at the table with a ice pack against her cheek and hand over her stomach, daydreaming about what happened, “Is everything alreight, Charleh?” She snaps out of it and looks up at Alex, who was leaning against the counter as his mum tended to his split knuckles.

Charlie had been worrying about the baby, even though she knew nothing could’ve possibly happened, “Yeah, ‘m just ‘ungry I fink.” Penny finishes wrapping his hand and gives him an ice pack, “You two stay ‘ere, I’ll get yeh some plates. It’s best yeh eat in ‘ere, just until the ice melts down. Especialleh yeh mister, yeh’ve work to do tomorrow.” They chuckle in unison as Penny goes back outsied, “Are yeh realleh okay, love? That wanker gave yeh quite the blow.” Alex is clearly still agitated so Charlie pats the seat next to her, “C’mere Al.” He sits down and takes her hand, “I’m okay. Just worried about Em and the kids.” Alex pulls her ice pack away to peak at the swollen skin and grimaces, “I know Char, but we’ll ‘elp Em make through this, okay? I promise.” Charlotte smiles despite the pain on her right cheek.

This was her Alex, he was always there to save her and everyone she loved. In that moment she almost blurted out about the pregnancy, but their mums walk into the room and ruin the moment, “Oh Penny, don’t they look adorable?” Charlie and Alex roll their eyes simultaneously, “Yes Maggie, I just wish they’d get together alreadeh and save meh the trouble of all these girls Alex keeps bringing ‘ome.” Alex objects, “Oi mum, can yeh not, please?” Charlie holds back her giggles as Penny tuts, “They are all beautiful to look at, son. But they are not for yeh, next to our Charleh they don’t stand a chance.”

They were used to their mothers comments by now, so they try to ignore them and go on with their meal. Once Charlie and Alex are both fed and their ice packs have melted they venture back outside, where Charlie is quickly pulled away to read a book for the kids.

Alex stays back to watch and is quickly approached by his grandma, “ ‘ey Nanna.” She hugs him from behind, keeping an arm wrapped around his waist, “ ‘ow are yeh, son?” He hums a positive response, eyes trained on Charlie as she entertains the kids, “She really is summat, innit?” Alex looks down to his grandma smiling and agrees, placing his injured hand on top of hers.

“Weh never realleh understood why yehs two didn’t end up together. I, personally, blame yehr father.” He pulls a face, “Nanna, tha’s awful! Besides, Charleh’s way too good for meh. She deserves better.” He looks back to his friend, catching a moment when she’d just read a funny line and all the children were laughing with her, making Charlie shine with a special glow. Nanna notices the look on his face and smiles sadly, “Whatever you say, love.”

Once the kids and their parents are sound asleep in their beds, as Charlie had given her room to their parents, she and Emily head to the living room for a nice sisterly chat, just like old times. While Em enjoyed a cup of red wine, Charlie resigned herself to curling up on the love seat with a warm cup of tea, “Today was…Quite the day, huh.” Ponders Emily taking a sip of her wine and sloshing the liquid around in her mouth.“I ‘ave to tell ‘im, don’t I?” Emily nods and Charlie sighs, “I’m so scared. I-I love ‘im as a friend above everyfing and to… Lose ‘im, I don’t know if I can.”

“You are scared of losing him like I lost Michael?” Charlie only whispers a word of agreement, “Char, you and Alex ‘ave ‘ad the perfect friendship for 30 years, yeh never fight. The worst fights Mike and I had, and still have are about money and that’s not an issue you and Alex will have.” Charlie grimaces at her sisters words, “I’m not gonna let Alex pay everyfing and spoil the kid at random.” Emily waves her off, “I know, love. But Michael and I were two broke kids, wiv not even a college degree, trying to handle two kids. The only reason I even ‘ave a ‘ouse today is because mum and dad left it to meh when they retired. Yeh ‘ave yehr own place and business, even if yeh raised this kid by yehrself, which I find highly unlikely, you’d still be good and not have to bother fighting wiv the father.”

Charlie takes another sip of her tea, trying to figure out how to voice her next question, “Em, did Michael… Did he ever hit yeh?” Emily looks down into her wine glass, as if she could find an alternative answer at the bottom, “Hmm, once… The week he left.” Charlie reaches out to grip her sister’s hand, fighting the instincts to storm out and find the man that hurt her sister, “Tha’s when I knew there was no going back, tha’ we was done.” Charlie reaches out to hold her sister’s hand, “Tell ‘im, Charleh. Worrying about it won’t change the fact that you are ‘aving ‘is baby.”

Emily finishes her wine and bids her goodnight, but Charlie can’t go to sleep yet, there was too much going on in her head so she falls back on an old habit. She takes her coat that was hanging by the door and slips into her boots, ready for a late night stroll around the neighborhood, where the cold air would hopefully help her sort through her thoughts.

Charlie wraps her coat tighter around herself as she takes a turn and to her surprise Alex is standing in front of his parent’s house, smoking a cigarette just like old times. She approaches him, “Can’t sleep?” He asks as she stops by his side, “Nope… I feel like we’re 16 again.” He chuckles, “Reight… ‘ow are yeh, Char?” She sighs, taking the cigarette he offered, thankful for the cold night as she takes a fake drag.

“I’m fine, Alex.” He shakes his head, knowing how stubborn she could be, “Me mum finks yeh’re depressed again. Are yeh?” Charlie looks down, kicking the gravel beneath her feet, “No. Are yeh? Yeh’ve been acting weird too.” He throws the cigarette butt on the ground, stepping on it, “No Charlie, ‘m not. But yeh’d tell me if there were summat wrong, reight?” Charlie turns to face him, “Yes, Alexander. I should go back ‘ome, it’s late.” She moves past him, going back towards her house, “Night, Charlotte. I love yeh.” She has to dig her nails into her hands to keep from crying as she turns back to face him, “Love you too, Turner.”

✤ - a memory that involves romance/love

The day was finally here. It seemed they had to wait their whole lives for this — Michael had waited his whole life for this. Anxiety glued to him since the moment his blue eyes opened first thing in the morning, he brought it everywhere with him that day. Even the church once the groomsmen arrived. His tux was perfect and the place was breathtakingly gorgeous, of course, he couldn’t expect anything less from his perfectionist soon to be wife. If they had anything in common, it was their need to excel at everything. Michael’s eyes traveled around the church, taking in all the familiar faces of those he grew fond of over the years. His family, all speaking rather loudly on one side of the aisle as his brothers stood in the altar waiting for him to arrive and take his rightful place. Next to them was Evangeline. The serious line on his lips immediately disappeared as he made his way to her side, in a matter of seconds the anxiousness washed away. “Hi there, best man,” Mike whispered as he gave her shoulder a light squeeze, needing to feel her even closer to not let the nervousness overcome him. Then, the music started and the doors at the end of the aisle swung open. Annabelle, all dressed in white accompanied by her father began to walk and as she moved closer Mike could feel panic starting a riot in his stomach. He wanted to hold Eva’s hand, for her to tell him he was going to be okay — but this one, this fear he had to overcome on his own. His fiance was getting closer and life as he knew it was about to change entirely. Months of planning and years of writing love letters all led up to this and once she reached his side, Michael knew it was all going to be okay. He loved her, more than anyone and anything in his life. Everything was going to be okay because their love would overcome all obstacles. “You look beautiful,” he whispered before the cermony began.

↕ - a memory that may or may not have happened

He wasn’t expecting her to close the space between them. That was certainly the last thing on Michael’s mind once his best friend didn’t speak up and instead pressed her lips against his. His eyes immediately widened with shock, too many things running through his mind at once. One of them was that fact that Evangeline was kissing him and after the initial astonishment wore off he found himself kissing her back. Softly at first, bringing a hand to her cheek and caressing the soft skin that had been bleeding just minutes before, then found its way to her dark curls. It would’ve been foolish to ever deny that at some point in their friendship, Michael hadn’t thought about this happening. They had slept in the same room far too many times after nights when she offered unconditional comfort. They shared meals together almost every day for too long and after a while, Eva became home. A home that he needed and could not bear to lose, something that was probable if whatever feelings he pushed down long ago got in the way of their friendship. “Lina,” he mumbled against her lips not wanting to stop but the ring on his finger had suddenly become a lot heavier. “We…we can’t.”

When it came to girls, Michael Lawson was as inexperienced as they came. His brothers always taunted him any chance they could, even though he had been dating Annabelle all through high school she abruptly decided they needed a “break” right around prom season. So, of course, his brothers wasted no time in torturing him about going to the dance alone. After a few weeks, with no sign of his ex-coming back around Mike had decided he wasn’t going to prom at all. That was the first time she talked to him — Evangeline Jenkins, the girl everyone in school seemed to adore, especially the boy who stuck to her like gum to a shoe. Annabelle wasn’t around and so when Eva spoke to him that day in the hallway, there was no reason for him to hold back. It was so easy, the way they fell into conversation, it almost felt like they had known each other for a very long time. It wasn’t long before Eva’s friend, Thomas, pulled her away and cut their chat short but Mike didn’t care. That night, all he thought about was the beautiful and smart raven-haired girl who he wanted to get to know better. With that goal in mind, he approached her again the next day at school — and the day after that.

He was going to make his move during the bonfire, it was settled. Michael had gone over the scenario about a dozen times before he decided to walk around and find Eva, he was going to ask her to prom. She had made it a clear a few times before that she was going alone, but not directly to him, so why not ask? It took quite some time to find her in the mess of drunk students at the beach but when he finally did, when he was just going to go for it — Annabelle appeared out of thin air. Eva quickly vanished, she was pulled away by her friend and Michael didn’t see her again that night, instead, he stayed to console his girlfriend again as she cried on his shoulders about missing him terribly.

MozCon is literally brimming with things to do and ways to support our attendees when they need it. Aside from our hosted events and three days’ worth of talks, we’ve got things to fill in the cracks and make sure your MozCon experience is everything you’ve ever wanted from a conference.

Photobooth with Roger: Admit it — you see that cute, googly-eyed robot face and you just want to hug it forever. At MozCon, you can do just that — and memorialize the moment with a picture at the photobooth! Roger’s a busy bot, but his photobooth schedule will be posted so you can plan your hugs accordingly.

Ping pong play sesh: Don your sweat bands and knee-high socks and keep your paddle arm limber! During breaks, we’ll have ping pong tables available to burn some excess energy and invite a little casual competition.

The world map of MozCon: Ever play pin the tail on the donkey? Well, this is sort of like that, but the donkey is a world map and (thankfully) there’s no blindfold. You’ll place a pin from wherever in the world you traveled from. It’s amazing to see how far some folks come for the conference!

Local snacks galore: Starbucks, Piroshky Piroshky, Ellenos Yogurt, and Top Pot Donuts will happily make themselves acquainted with your tastebuds! Carefully chosen from local Seattle businesses, our snacks will definitely please your local taste pallet and, if past feedback is to be believed, possibly tempt you to move here.

Stay charged: Pining for power? Panicking at that battery level of 15% at 10am? Find our charging sofas to fuel up your mobile device.

MozCon is for everyone

We want marketers of all stripes to feel comfortable and supported at our conference. Being “for everyone” means we’re working hard to make MozCon more accessible in many different ways. Light Rail: Connecting the north end to the south, the Light Rail can move you across Seattle quickly (and even drop you off right at SeaTac for your flight home!)

Water taxis and ferries can float you right across the Sound (and offer a lovely view while they’re at it)

A Transit Go ticket or ORCA card will happily power your public transit excursions

Bikeshare programs: As you wander the city, you may notice brightly colored bicycles patiently awaiting riders on the sidewalks. That rider could be you! If you’re feeling athletic, take advantage of the city’s bikeshare programs and see Seattle on two wheels.

16. 1996-97 Atlanta Hawks

Once upon a time, the Atlanta Hawks were a free-agent destination. At least they were for Dikembe Mutombo, a young, shot-blocking center who wore out his welcome in Denver. Mutombo seemed headed to Phoenix in a three-team sign-and-trade that would’ve sent Charles Barkley to Houston, but the deal fell apart when Mutombo asked the Suns for more money. Detroit initially jumped to the front of the line, but Atlanta ended up winning the war with a seven-year, $70 million contract offer.

The money was the biggest factor in Mutombo’s decision, but Atlanta also won Mutombo over by promising a bigger offensive role and rewarding close friend Steve Smith with a fat new contract of his own. “I’m much happier, but poorer,” team president Stan Kasten ominously said after retaining Smith. “He was really hard on us, that’s all I’m going to say.”

Atlanta got better the next season, improving by 10 wins and even taking a game off the mighty Bulls in the second round. That was the high-water mark of this era, though. Chicago won that series in five, and the Hawks slowly faded after a fast start to the 1997-98 season.

15. 1984-85 Denver Nuggets

ERA: Doug Moe’s run-and-gun fun bunch

RECORD: 52-30

POINT DIFFERENTIAL: +2.4

PLAYOFF RESULT: Lost in West Finals to Los Angeles Lakers (4-1)

COACH: Doug Moe

OTHERS CONSIDERED FROM THIS ERA: 1987-88

The Denver Nuggets of the 1980s were the prototype for the Seven Seconds Or Less Suns and other up-tempo marvels of the modern era. In many ways, coach Doug Moe was a precursor to Mike D’Antoni. He created a revolutionary whiplash pass-and-move style of play and then left the details for the players to figure out. While other coaches diagrammed intricate set plays and poured over what passed for game film those days, Moe often cancelled practice and never really studied his opponents.

The Nuggets lit up the scoreboard because nobody could get a read on them, but also gave up a ton of points and thus weren’t taken seriously. Not that it bothered Moe too much. This quote from a 1988 Sports Illustrated profile sounds a lot like something D’Antoni would shout to the rooftops years later:

”Most of my career, we’ve been first in offense and last in defense,” Moe says. “But what people don’t realize is that total scores have nothing to do with defense or offense, just the pace of the game. It’s the dumbest statistic ever, totally wacko, and yet everyone uses the total scores as an indication of the kind of defense you play. I may not be the smartest guy in the world, but as long as people go by that stat, I know there’s someone out there dumber than I am.”

Adjusting raw stats to account for pace … what a concept!

The 1984-85 team was Moe’s best of the bunch, though it also was the one that looked most traditional. Before the season, Denver traded Kiki Vandeweghe, a 29-point-per-game scorer who couldn’t guard a chair, to Portland for a king’s ransom that included big man Calvin Natt, point guard Fat Lever, shot-blocking center Wayne Cooper, and multiple draft picks. All three thrived while rounding out the roster around star Alex English.

Denver reached the conference finals and had a real shot to beat the mighty Los Angeles Lakers. They blew LA off the court in Game 2 to tie the series, with English dropping 40 on a stunned Forum crowd.

After losing Game 3 at home, Denver came out hot in Game 4, with English scoring 26 first-half points. Disaster struck in the second half when English re-aggravated a thumb injury that kept him out the rest of the series. Denver rallied from eight down in the fourth quarter without English, but lost Game 4 when the Lakers got seven zillion offensive rebounds before a game-winning James Worthy putback with 20 seconds left.

“That has to rank with one of the most courageous performances I’ve ever seen,” said Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, never a man to resort to hyperbole, in a TV interview.

Without English, Denver had no chance in Game 5. Too bad. That was a fun team.

14. 1982-83 San Antonio Spurs

George Gervin, the skinny, slick wing who brought the finger roll into our lives, had two real chances to win a title.

The first was in 1979. Led by Gervin and high-scoring running mate Larry Kenon, the high-octane, loosey-goosey Spurs ran circles around the aging Washington Bullets to take a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. (Why were the Spurs in the East then? :shruggie:) They blew the next two games, but zipped ahead in Game 7 on the road, with Gervin lighting up the scoreboard for 34 points in three quarter. They led by 10 in the fourth and six with two minutes left, but fell apart down the stretch. Gervin didn’t score or even get a shot late, and was bullied inside by Greg Ballard on the other end. Meanwhile, Washington’s Bobby Dandridge took over down the stretch and eventually won the game with a baseline turnaround over three Spurs.

Gervin’s second real chance came in 1982-83, with a team that barely resembled the one that was forged in the wide-open ABA. The Spurs replaced coach Doug Moe with Stan Albeck, who believed San Antonio needed to slow the game down and build a smash-mouth team exclusively around Gervin. Kenon made way for Mike Mitchell, a former all-star in Cleveland who rediscovered his game with the Spurs. After the Lakers swept them in 1982, San Antonio made a bold move for Artis Gilmore, a big-name center to match up with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. San Antonio won four of five against LA in the regular season, but a pissed-off Abdul-Jabbar raised his game to another level and destroyed Gilmore in LA’s six-game West Finals victory.

Which to choose? The 1979 team got closer, but the 1983 team had more top-end talent and was more equipped to succeed in the playoffs. They just happened to run into a buzzsaw in Abdul-Jabbar and the Lakers.

13. 1971-72 Chicago Bulls

The Bulls were to the 70s what the Bucks were to the 1980s: a well-rounded ensemble cast that always put itself in the mix, was one piece short of taking down the best teams of their era.

In Chicago’s case, that piece was a center. Jerry Sloan and Norm Van Lier were pit bull defensive guards, and the combination of Chet Walker and Bob Love were nearly unstoppable at the forward spots. But Chicago kept getting beat by the great big men of their era, losing three times to Wilt Chamberlain’s Lakers and once to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Bucks. Tom Boerwinkle and Clifford Ray got more out of their talent than they should have, but they were dramatically overmatched against the best of their era.

Chicago came closer to the Finals in 1971, 1973, and 1975, when they lost in the seventh game of the conference finals. The 1972-73 team actually held a seven-point lead over the Lakers with less than three minutes left of Game 7 before fumbling it away. But the 1971-72 club had the best point differential of the bunch and destroyed everyone not named Los Angeles or Milwaukee. Unfortunately, they had to face the 69-win Lakers in the playoffs, which ended in a sweep.

12. 2008-09 Denver Nuggets

If only they could complete an inbounds pass in the closing seconds of tight West Finals games against the Lakers. My God.

This was the original Superteam, at least in the inorganic, player-empowered way we now associate with the term.

Following a rough year in Phoenix, Charles Barkley threatened to retire if the Suns didn’t trade him to a contender. Houston obliged, giving up a package centered around Sam Cassell and Robert Horry, two key members of their back-to-back title teams in 1994 and 1995. “I’m excited because I called the shots,” Barkley said when the trade was reported. “When push comes to shove, I think you have to stand up to the system.” These kinds of trades are common now, but they weren’t back then.

The move left the Rockets as an old, shallow team, with Barkley joining fellow graybeards Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. Houston patched together enough of a supporting cast to reach the conference finals, but fell to a John Stockton buzzer beater in Game 6.

They then succumbed to injury the next couple seasons, with the bottom falling out after an ill-fated deal for Scottie Pippen during the lockout season.

If you ask Horry, the deal for Barkley was the moment the Rockets’ dynasty died. From a 2015 Huffington Post interview:

“It’s one of the things that me and Sam Cassell talk about all the time. If they would have made the changes and bring in Kevin Willis and Eddie Johnson to that team adding to me and Sam, that’s all we needed. Now they bring in Barkley, a guy who doesn’t like to practice and a guy that doesn’t work hard — it’s documented by Jordan. Now you would’ve added us to that mix with two vets; we would have had a great team. But, no, they think, ‘Oh, we’re going to bring in Charles,’ and, hell, you just realize Charles didn’t win anything in Phoenix — he didn’t win in Philly. And sometimes great players don’t make a great team better.”

Horry’s right that Barkley’s fit was awkward, but he’s dramatically overrating a pre-trade Rockets team that was already showing its age after the Sonics swept them out of the 1996 playoffs. Were the 72-win Bulls really gonna be scared of that Rockets team, plus two 34+-year-old aging vets? At least adding Barkley gave the Rockets a chance.

10. 1975-76 Denver Nuggets

The lone ABA representative on this list might have been disrespected in the rankings. As the ABA fell apart around them, the Nuggets turned into a powerhouse. In 1974-75, young coach Larry Brown led Denver to 65 wins before they were overwhelmed by George McGinnis’ one-man show in Indiana. That team then added David Thompson, a breathtaking rookie from NC State whose grace and high-flying aerial assaults mimicked a young Michael Jordan a decade later. (Jordan idolized Thompson, which is why he asked Thompson to present him at his Hall of Fame induction.)

But the Nuggets were again defeated by a one-man band, falling to Julius Erving and the Nets in the ABA’s last Finals series. Denver led by 22 points in the second half of Game 6 before falling apart to lose the crown.

Thompson and the Nuggets’ NBA careers were decidedly less memorable. Thompson dealt with injuries and a cocaine addiction that nearly wrecked his life. (He is thankfully sober today.) His relationship with Brown soured, with Brown chafing by Thompson’s $800,000-a-year new contract before calling it quits midway through the 1978-79 season. (Larry Brown folding early? Why I never.) The Nuggets have occasionally thrived in the NBA, but have never reached their ABA heights.

9. 1996-97 Miami Heat

Four of the five legitimate Heat teams of the ugly-but-effective Pat Riley-Alonzo Mourning era lost as favorites in the playoffs. Three of those losses were to the Knicks, while the fourth was a thorough evisceration by Baron Davis’ Charlotte Hornets. This was the fifth of those five, and they may have lost to the Knicks too if not for the league’s controversial rule about leaving the bench during a fight. You remember this, don’t you?

I remembered the fight, but I forgot the politicking by both teams thereafter. I forgot P.J. Brown saying he doesn’t believe “all that choir boy image stuff” with the Knicks. I forgot Charlie Ward claiming he was just “boxing out like I usually do on free throws” even though the Knicks were down 15 with less than two minutes remaining. I hadn’t seen Pat Riley’s firm insistence that the fight only got “out of hand” because the Knicks players left the bench. (Riley’s annunciation on “com-BAT-ants” was especially well executed.) I very much enjoyed Jeff Van Gundy’s withering sarcasm at the thought of the NBA allowing “6’11 guys picking on six-foot guys.” (Think of the children!)

But Tim Hardaway is the one who really stole the show. Look at his wink-winking to the camera while saying, “it’ll be very interesting to see what [NBA rules czar] Rod Thorn does.” It was not subtle.

It worked, though. Thorn tossed Brown for the rest of the series, but made five Knicks — Ward, Allan Houston, Patrick Ewing, John Starks, and Larry Johnson — serve one-game suspensions. The first three missed Miami’s Game 6 victory at MSG, while the latter two sat out as Miami closed out the series in seven. The Heat ended up losing in five to the Bulls in the next round.

8. 2003-04 Minnesota Timberwolves

ERA: KG and Flip

The one and only credible Timberwolves team in the Kevin Garnett era rose and fell in a flash. Dogged by first-round exits carrying a limited supporting cast, Garnett went to owner Glen Taylor and asked for more help. He did his part by signing a new contract below the max, and Taylor’s embattled general manager Kevin McHale did his by acquiring Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell. Both veterans came with high salaries and as distressed assets, having worn out their welcomes in Milwaukee and New York.

After a slow start, the team gelled beautifully, racing to the top of the Western Conference. They survived a formidable Kings team in the second round, then split the first two games with the vaunted Lakers in the conference Finals. But their Game 2 victory was tarnished by a debilitating Cassell injury, which turned out to be a torn hip that rendered him useless the rest of the series. With Cassell and backup Troy Hudson both out, Minnesota had to use third-stringer Darrick Martin, with Garnett of all people supplying additional playmaking. “I knew for a fact that if I was healthy, we would have won a championship,” Cassell said in 2014.

Minnesota lost that series in six, and then all hell broke loose. Sprewell and Cassell asked for contract extensions, but didn’t get them. (This is where Sprewell’s famous “feed my family” quote was born.) Hudson and Wally Szczerbiak, both former starters displaced by Sprewell and Cassell the previous season, wanted their jobs back. As a horrendous follow-up season came to a close, Taylor called the trades for Cassell and Sprewell “a failed experiment” and “financial-wise, a poor decision on our part.” Ten months ago, they were the missing pieces in the best Timberwolves team of all time. Now, they were a failed experiment? The about-face was remarkable.

Sprewell left in free agency and never played again, while Cassell was included along with a first-round pick in a disastrous sign-and-trade with the Clippers for the right to give Marko Jaric a six-year, $37 million contract. Two years later, the Timberwolves traded Garnett to the Celtics. Now that’s how you destroy a contender.

7. 1997-98 Indiana Pacers

ERA: Reggie!

The 1997-98 club was rock solid, having replaced taskmaster coach Larry Brown with the more laid-back Larry Bird. They were deep, with young Jalen Rose emerging as a dynamic bench player to complement the veteran core of Miller, Mark Jackson, Rik Smits, Chris Mullin, and the Davises. If only they could have snagged a defensive rebound or two in that Game 7 defeat to the Bulls.

6. 1985-86 Milwaukee Bucks

Any of the wonderful-yet-forgotten Bucks teams from the 1980s would be a strong entry in this tournament. You could make a great case for the 1980-81, which relied on an in-prime Marques Johnson, an emerging Sidney Moncrief, and an aging-but-still-effective Bob Lanier in the middle. They won 60 games despite enduring several injuries, but fell to the 76ers in the second round by the slimmest of margins. Game 7, played in front of a sparse Philadelphia crowd, featured 19 ties, 11 lead changes, and one furious Bucks’ rally from 16 points down that fell just short.

But the 1985-86 Bucks get the nod because they did the one thing no other Bucks team could during the decade: beat the 76ers. It took a missed jumper by Julius Erving in the closing seconds of Game 7, but it happened. One point on the right side in 1986 vs. one point on the wrong side in 1981 was the difference.

Just getting past Philly took everything out of Milwaukee. Moncrief, who always seemed to have nagging health issues, was nursing a painful foot injury that kept him out of Game 6 against the 76ers. Young co-star Terry Cummings, acquired in a masterful trade with the Clippers for Johnson before the 1984-85 season, was fighting through a dislocated finger. Ricky Pierce, the Bucks’ fabulous sixth man, played through a sprained ankle. They might have been drawing dead against the fantastic 1985-86 Celtics even at full strength, but we never really got to find out.

5. 1963-64 San Francisco Warriors

ERA: Young Wilt

Fair or not, Young Wilt Chamberlain had a reputation for being a selfish coach-killer that only cared about his own stats. That got taken to its logical extreme in 1961-62, when Chamberlain averaged 50 points a game for a Philadelphia Warriors team that catered to his every move.

After those Warriors fell narrowly to Bill Russell’s Celtics in the East Finals, they moved across the country to San Francisco and saw Chamberlain mope his way through a 31-49 season that alienated his new fans. “He felt like someone who bought a Rolls-Royce only to discover that the horn didn’t work,” read one Sports Illustrated article.

In came Alex Hannum, a no-nonsense, 6’7 former championship coach who was there to stand up to Chamberlain. The two men got into a screaming match early in the season, but Chamberlain responded by playing more team ball and empowering the rest of the Warriors players. They lost in five games to Boston in the Finals, but the Hannum-Chamberlain partnership seemed poised for the long haul.

Instead, the Warriors fell apart the next season. Chamberlain was nowhere near himself after a preseason bout with pancreatitis, and eccentric new owner Frankie Mieuli traded him to the 76ers to avoid paying out a massive salary. Hannum left the next season and later reunited with Chamberlain to win the 1967 title as 76ers coach.

4. 1961-62 Los Angeles Lakers

It’s a real shame Elgin Baylor never won a championship. His Lakers always ran into the same brick wall that was Bill Russell’s Celtics, and always seemed to fall short in the same way. He and Jerry West were always spectacular, but the Celtics always had more depth and cohesion.

Baylor came closest in 1962, and damn did he come close amid remarkable circumstances. He was called up to the Army Reserve during the season — because he was stationed in Washington, he could only travel back to play in weekend Lakers games. His service was finished by the time the playoffs rolled around, making LA a much more dangerous team than its record indicated.

Led by Baylor and West, the Lakers split the first three games and 47:55 with the Celtics. With five seconds left in Game 7, the Lakers inbounded the ball to Hot Rod Hundley. Legendary Celtics point guard Bob Cousy inexplicably gazed at the ball, leaving Frank Selvy wiiiide open from 12 feet away. But Selvy missed, and Boston eventually survived in overtime when Cousy dribbled out the clock.

Dogged by injuries, Baylor was never quite the same player thereafter. He retired early in the 1971-72 season as a shell of his former self. Months later, those Lakers won the title.

3. 1992-93 Phoenix Suns

These Suns are remembered for their star power, high-octane offense, and memorable duel with the Bulls in the 1993 Finals. They swung a huge trade for Charles Barkley and ran away with the West. Barkley won MVP, scowling and shouting his message from the rooftops whenever he could find a microphone. The Barkley-Michael Jordan Finals duel occurred at arguably the peak of NBA interest in this country.

As fun as they were, though, they’ve become a bit overrated over the years. Their point differential was about the same as the previous two Suns teams without Barkley, and their defense was porous for a title favorite. Barkley and holdover Kevin Johnson co-exited, but never developed great on-court chemistry thanks in part to Johnson’s injuries. They lost the first two games of their first-round series against a dogshit Lakers team before rallying to win in five. Their West Finals victory over Seattle could’ve gone either way. Key reserve Cedric Ceballos missed the tail end of their playoff run.

I’m just saying they might be over-ranked.

2. 2017-18 Houston Rockets

Fortified by the offseason acquisition of Chris Paul, the Rockets dominated the regular season behind a switch-everything defense and a deadly isolation attack spearheaded by James Harden.

Everything they did was to match up against the Warriors, a team nobody else dared to challenge. They took a 3-2 lead in their conference finals series, but lost Paul due to injury late in Game 5. Somehow, they led both Games 6 and 7 by double-digits at halftime. But Golden State flipped the switch and the Rockets faded, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 missed threes at a time.

1. 1996-97 Utah Jazz

Twenty-three years later, the subhead on Jackie MacMullen’s “Inside the NBA” piece for the March 17, 1997, issue of Sports Illustrated sticks out like a sore thumb. “[Karl] Malone is playing like an MVP,” it read. “Not that anyone has noticed.”

Whether the piece changed the narrative or simply reflected something deeper beneath the surface, it had a major effect. Two months later, Malone edged out Michael Jordan in the voting to win the NBA’s preeminent regular-season prize.

The Bulls seethed, which proved to be bad news for Malone when he finally reached his first NBA Finals. As he stepped to the line in the closing seconds of a tied Game 1, Scottie Pippen whispered the now-iconic words: “The Mailman don’t deliver on Sundays.” Malone missed both, opening the door for Jordan to hit a game-winning jumper at the buzzer.

That set the stage for a Finals in which Malone played below par and the Jazz lost in six games despite often being on the doorstep of victory. Their Game 5 loss has been memorialized as Jordan’s “Flu Game” moment, and they gave up a game-winning jumper to Steve Kerr in Game 6 before throwing the ball away at the buzzer.

Too bad, because these Jazz were a dominant force. They zipped through the West playoffs, schooling the young Lakers in five and outlasting the superteam Rockets of Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and Charles Barkley in the West Finals. In any other season, they would have been champions.
