I hc that Riz basically treats Baron as a pet while they're in his briefcase. He has to "feed" him twice a day, once before leaving school and once before his "bedtime" (he usually just throws food scraps, wet dog food, or just random trash int his briefcase to feed them). He sees toys and buys them specifically for Baron. If Baron ever escapes he just walks the block a couple times until they tire themselves out.

The other Bad Kids dont notice until one sleepover Riz forgets to feed him before sleeping and they crawl out to watch them all sleep. Adaine wakes up and then immediately wakes everyone else up by screaming. They ask Riz why and he just says he couldn't figure out how to get rid of them.

After the whole 'you tried to murder all my friends and also possessed some of them' debacle he does try to find a way to get rid of Baron for good. His first step was getting Kristen to help him talk to Cassandra and figure out what the fuck is going on but the goddex is also super confused, but tries to get Barron to chill out a bit.

They can't get rid of him, but they come to a decent understanding. Barons not going anywhere (until Riz fixes what created him in the first place and GOOD LUCK he's not unpacking that can of worms until highschool is over probably he's got other shit to worry about).

He wouldnt be activly mean about Baron being in his suitcase, leftovers if he thinks Baron would like it but dogfood and trash is going a bit far (and definitly makes things worse, as do all terrible coping mechanisms when you're dealing with a literal manifiestation of your psyche). If he sees something he thinks Baron would think is interesting while out and about, he'll get it and he usually gets a couple weeks of peace without seeing them afterwards.

He doesnt even need feeding really, Baron technically doesnt NEED to eat he just needs to be acknowledged and if Riz forgets to say goodnight a couple of days in a row THEN he does the whole sleep-paralasis demon thing (*Baron staring unblinking 10cm from Riz's face waiting for him to notice he's there even though he's asleep* you did not sae goodneight Riz Gukgak~ It is okae, i shall say it instead but do not forgaet again.).

Baron is the manifestation of something repressed that Riz wants to ignore, but ignoring it makes it worse (and ignoring it a lot gets you locked in a metaphorical/literal haunted house where everything is trying to kill you oof). Sometimes you have to acknowledge those feelings and thats OKAY even if you dont have the time or energy to work through them right now.

- rin who internally screams when you tell him that he can spend the night at your place whenever he wants (although he was 99% sure this would happen)

- rin who then lets you ramble abt everything that has happened to you since he got stuck in bllk while he stares at you with so much admiration and love while you talk </3

- until you tell him that you went to see him in the u-20 match as soon as you got the news he was going to play, then he blushes a little and internally screams again

SAE NIIJIMA. AND GORO AKECHI. HAVE. THE LITERAL FUNNIEST DYNAMIC OF ANY CHARACTERS IN ANY PIECE OF MEDIA, EVER.

They’re, like, coworkers, which is already incredible bc they’re like. a 27 year old woman and a 17 year old boy. i dont actually know how old sae is but you get the idea. can you imagine being sae and working so hard to earn a position & respect as a young female prosecutor and then theyre like. can you confer with this Teenage Prettyboy. shes so strong for not just walking out.

But It Gets Better. Every interaction they have is stellar. The very first time we see them interact, which is also The First Time We See Akechi, At All, is, god i dont remember the Actual conversation they have i only rememebe the end of it, the most important part: akechi trying to get sae to buy him sushi and looking so miserable and pathetic when she’s like “only the cheap stuff :/“. Fucking…. incredible. 10/10 introduction to their dynamic all on its own. I cannot remember if akechi ever asks her to get him sushi again in the game or if im recalling something that happened in the anime or a fanfic. but. god its so funny. akechi, AKECHI, trying to pester this adult woman he works with into treating him to food. and her refusing. its incredible i could talk in circles abt how good this is for years.

and then it gets even funnier bc of like. the scene where sae realizes that Her Laptop Has Been Tampered With, and she asks akechi if He did it because they had a Disagreement recently. sae thinks akechi is petty enough to like. illegally take important and classified case information from her computer. over some difference of opinion that like, i imagine we see in the game, but if we do its so Understated that ive never noticed it. and she goes Did you try to get revenge on me. you bitch. like its so so funny

AND IT STILL GETS FUNNIER. BECAUSE. makoto says like. she got the impression sae had more trust & respect for akechi than for her. Sae is like “this guy I work with can be annoying and full of himself but he’s genuinely smart and he gets the job done i respect that” and then the guy in question is A TEENAGE CELEBRITY.

I don’t think we ever get to see akechi talk about sae all that much but like. It seems like he does Genuinely Like Her. And also is constantly passive aggressive at her!

In conclusion i. They’re incredible. They’re coworkers, theyre enemies, theyre very good friends with deep respect and even a kind of admiration for each other, theyre one businesswoman and the weird as hell teenager she works with that she feels compelled to be nice to because she has a little sister his age.

Again yet another case of like. ^ All That is just like. Their actual canon interactions. I cant improve on that. The only way it can be made better is by having More of it. GOD I wish we got more of it. Oh also I think they talk shit about other people theyve both worked with together. With the utmost professionalism.

So, I dont know if it’ll be what you were hoping for, but a while ago i was thinking about an Akira palace about feeling overwhelmed that’s maybe called “Balancing Act” (i was thinking about calling it like. ‘tilting tower’ or something cause I think ‘tilting tower toppled’ would be a funny achievement to get once you beat it, but that just sounds too much like the fortnite thing and i cant handle that lmao), which the thieves (sans akechi- this will be explained later) probably realize exists somewhere around the end of sae’s palace.

Since the palace isn’t really akira’s distortion of a place so much as it is his distortion of what’s expected of him, his keywords could probably be something like “everyone’s happiness” and “his responsibility”? And I guess the location could just be leblanc since that’s where he lives?? I haven’t really. thought this part out too heavily lol ^^; feel free to interpret it as you’d like.

It’s probably been done before, but the whole thing is based around the idea of akira's shadow manifesting as atlas, but instead of holding up the weight of the sky, he’s holding the growing weight of people’s expectations. So, the palace itself is....you guessed it.....a tilting building! wow! It’s only not completely falling over because akira’s holding it up from the foundation, since it’s full of people he’s afraid to let down :)

sort of like that. it doesn’t have to be an apartment building, obviously. In all honesty what’s in my head is just like. a giant white cube. cause i really don’t know what “feeling responsible for other people’s continued happiness” would manifest as aside from something that could maybe hold cognitions of said people, so please accept the apartment building for now lmao (again feel free to interpret as you like)! And his outfit is definitely subject to change, i just stuck him in the first thing that came to mind xD

“BUT SOPHIA,” i hear you asking, “IF AKIRA’S RIGHT THERE, CAN’T THE PT JUST FIGHT HIM AND TAKE HIS TREASURE REALLY QUICKLY?” NO, you fool!! He’s holding up the weight of the world! does it LOOK like he’s got time to fight, let alone know where the hell his treasure is?? It being Akira’s palace, of course he cuts a deal with them- find his treasure and they can just keep it since it’ll be a weight off his mind (literally), in exchange for someone bearing the building for just a few minutes so he can have a break before they actually leave with the treasure. The thieves agree to this and eventually head into the building he’s holding up (i thought the thieves stealing his treasure literally adding weight to his mind/being another burden he has to shoulder was a funny concept here), and begin searching.

pretty much at this point I just figured the goal would be scaling the building, since the treasure is most likely at the top? (cause i mean honestly speaking if it’s not with akira, where else would it be. just finding it sitting in the middle of the fifth floor seems anti-climactic). As they ascend, they realize everything is in perfect equilibrium, perfectly balanced on both sides of the building so it helps it not topple. E.g., on one floor one side of the hall has a ryuji cognition while the other has an ann cognition, or something to that effect.

Earlier I mentioned the thieves sans akechi finding out about this palace late into the infiltration of sae’s because if the thieves were to discover akira had a palace, i doubt they’d tell akechi when they know he’s going to betray them and wouldn’t want him to purposefully muck up their infiltration. I also thought it would be interesting to see an akechi cognition in the palace, and maybe have it purposefully doing something to throw akira off balance (a consequence of him knowing about the assassination plot, explaining why it would be late in sae’s palace)? my initial thought was literally something like ‘the thieves walk into a room just in time to see the akechi cognition step off the edge of the balcony and un-balance the building, causing the gimmick of the palace to become having to leave a party member behind to keep it balanced every time something throws it off-balance on their way to reach the top’ or something. but idk! that seems a little extreme and i didn’t really put any thought into how they’d get back down afterward, so. just consider there being a trouble-maker akechi cognition, lol. ^^;

anyway! they reach the top eventually, the treasure’s there. hooray! they head back down to send the calling card. I genuinely don’t know whether akira knows about his palace or not in this au or whether he even wants the pt to steal his heart, but. He gets a calling card none-the-less, since whatever is causing his distortion is harmful to him and his friends want to help him. And I don’t feel like exploring the potential consequences of it being his choice or not rn >o>

So the pt go back in to steal the treasure! And it goes really easily. in and out! but before they can leave, Akira’s shadow asks them to uphold their part of the deal- someone take the weight of the palace for him for a minute so he can know what it’s like to exist without the weight of that on his shoulders for a minute before he disappears. Now...if you know anything about atlas’ encounter with heracles, you know that he tries to trick him into holding up the sky indefinitely. WELL! guess what happens when one of the pt takes up his mantle under the building. Akira’s like “oh gee, thank you! you’re a great friend.” and then yoinks his treasure from the others and tells them they’re going to have to try to take it from him. he’s got people relying on him, and he needs this in order to keep them happy!!

the supposed gimmick of the palace continues, in that the PT are always one party member down during the boss fight (maybe you can switch out whose holding it? i don’t see why you couldn’t, so long as someone always is).

This is where my planning on the palace kind of ends, because I’m not sure what akira’s shadow turns into during the bossfight. Back when i first got into p5 vanilla, i didn’t have a whole palace au but i had a kinda melancholy akira shadow encounter thought out, where when his friends ask why he hasn’t transformed into a monster during his boss fight he says something like “i’ve got a palace. i’m already a monster, aren’t I?” or something to that effect. so, that’s an option, but it sort of doesn’t fit the vibe so... idk! again feel free to interpret it as you will lmao.

When they do defeat him and get his treasure back, he tells them to get out of the palace before it collapses and takes the (now probably crumbling) building from whoever’s currently holding it. The thieves feel bad leaving him there, and he tries to convince them that he’s heading back to his real self in a few moments so they shouldn’t worry, but they all band together for a hot minute and help him hold up the palace even as it collapses, and it’s like. a show of solidarity? Like a “you can call on us if you need help” kinda thing? and they’re with him till he disappears and they escape.

Not sure what happens when they get back to the real world or what akira’s treasure turns out to be (i’ve seen other aus where its his probation notebook so. maybe that?), but thats it!

...yep. i’m not as attached to it as the train one (cause its not got goro in it lmao), but! that’s what i got. :>

sae sucks because she’s a bad character with nigh nonexistent & largely informed character development who is also sitting at the heart of p5′s issues w/ admitting that Problems In The Government aren’t the result of like lone bad apples abusing the system but a system that is fundamentally broken in the favor of said individuals. 

sae’s plotline wants the player to believe SO HARD that she was a just individual until intentional, and relatively recent, outside pressure (spurred on by akechi & her boss) warped her cognition (...setting her alongside “futaba” instead of the other adult palace owners) when. no, that is not what sae’s palace actually says, (lol). and like. she’s a japanese prosecutor. lol.  like... i guess what i’m trying to say is that while the game wants you to believe that this is a recent development given how the japanese prosecutorial system actually functions and where sae is in the power structure (she is, a VERY BIG DEAL ACTUALLY) there’s no way in hell she hasn’t been... lets say “pushing things along”... this whole time. you don’t progress in that system without getting your hands dirty which is again something saes palace supports! girlboss gaslight gatekeep whatever.  she also never actually apologizes to makoto (which is infuriating) and her development is really... like idk it just leaves me w/ a bad taste in my mouth that she’s totally willing to drag the fucking drugged and beaten 16 year old over the coals even after her initial line where she’s like “aurgh” about it. like, what the fuck sae. he’s clearly barely coherent. her development is just.... aaaaaaaaurgh. i literally do not have better words for it thats just how it makes me feel.  & i find her position in endgame fucking infuriating as well when she then drags the protagonist of persona 5 into the middle of an investigation wherein many of the people in positions of power just attempted a fascistic takeover of japan. and have already expressed a willingness to kill people and ruin lives. which. what the fuck, sae. especially since his testimony is canonically useless (if they can’t prove that shido did supernatural bullshit then there is NO REASON to involve joker, and they couldn’t) and it literally just landed him on a government watchlist. like. what the fuck. she has a duty as an adult in this situation to keep a kid OUT of situations like that especially when he literally just shot god for her and everyone else.  (AND I CAN AGAIN GET REALLY MAD ABOUT THE, VANILLA ESPECIALLY, ENDING OF PERSONA 5 ACTED AS THOUGH SHIDO/YALDOBAOTH WAS LIKE.... Also unrelated but I went back to read hollyhock 1 and then 2 again and in the process passed by your masterlist and decided to read seabird too and WOW (as we’ve discussed) I’m not really a Sae fan but the way you write him makes me wanna be one SHDVSHDH maybe you just sprinkle some sort of magic spice into all of your characterizations that’s by far one of the best versions of Sae I’ve seen written out there the constant “I beat you to paying” was so funny too!!! OMG SEABIRD AHAHA that was like the first or second request i got for my event (and also ever) so i was really excited to write it even though lowkey i was like “sae 🙁⁉️” i got sooo carried away w it too (as you can tell by the 11k< word count KFJDJD) and it ended up being sm fun!! reader and sae’s relationship (as well as her little brother’s random cameos) was so silly summer cutesy so it rlly fit the vibe considering i wrote it in the end of may/beginning of june. ofc yk how i feel abt sae and the itoshi bros in general but i always try to set aside my biases when writing!! it’s my goal to write stories that you can enjoy regardless of the characters they’re for. and yes i really tried hard to characterize seabird sae as close to how i actually see his manga self!! i think his dry emotionless soccer-brained personality meshed really well w the reader’s which is probably a part of the charm he has in that story!! i’m glad you gave it a chance and ended up liking it though 💖

Thoughts on Shusumi as a ship?

i think ive stared at this ask long enough to type out something half decent 

short answer: no, sorry not for me, but its not her fault.

the rest is under the cut because i love to prattle

long answer: ive talked about this before and ill keep talking about it, which is the tragedy of yoshizawa sumire’s character. basically atlus decided that they wanted to make sumire the perfect girl in the entire game. she has to hit every single box on the waifu checklist without fail.

they introduce her as the mysterious character--she saves joker right  at the beginning of the game and its supposed to be a shocking moment for returning players because ‘why does joker need help from some girl oh my she must be so cool!’ and immedietely youre supposed to be intrigued by her and her mystery. but then right after they do that, they re introduce her by doing the most stereotypical archetype of the male love interest saving the cute small girl from a creepy man to show how good of a guy he is and in that moment Atlus had locked themselves into an uneven power dynamic between shusumi--she feels indebted to him because he saved her! so she has to work hard to make it up to him! classic anime trope because dudebros love that whole ‘girl throws herself at me because of how amazing i am’ thing. and its supposed to be a fun play because ‘how fun, they saved each other’ but honestly sumire literally did not need to save joker in sae’s palace because???? what??? it just doesnt make sense?????? even the game couldnt explain that part properly afterwards. 

and to add insult to injury, they make her call him senpai. theres this trope in anime called the imoto trope which translates to “little sister.” this could be non-sexual/romantic but many times it just means that a girl looks for guidance to a male figure in her life so he can “protect” her so she feels indebted/reliant to him, etc. the fact that shes the only one calling him senpai makes her perfectly slot into the imoto trope. it’s tripe. its annoying. its demeaning. it’s especially infuriating because futaba is already the imoto figure in this stupid game and she works perfectly without a romantic subplot. they just want to give akira another leg-up over sumire for the dudebros because dudebros eat that kind of shit up

and thats the most annoying thing!! 

look, i love yoshizawa sumire with my entire heart. shes a great character with an incredible backstory. ive written a lot of fic about her. i love her. shes great. Atlus knows shes great--they made her great because in order to make a perfect waifu you need to make her three dimensional because the dudebros would never accept a half-assed waifu because jeez who do you think we are

but. atlus did this horrifically infuriating thing where they know sumire is great BUT they did it in a way where she will never ever be better than, or threaten the power and competence, of the player.

its like they’re (atlus) playing the most infuriating game of im not touching you when they were trying to make sumires character. they make this character and she’s super cool (but not rude! because if shes rude then shes a bitch and she wont be waifu material!) and she’s a badass (but she isnt as good as joker! because he still has to be the most skillful character for some reason!) she has to be pretty (but she can’t be interested in shopping or makeup because shes supposed to be smart and not like other girls!)

because atlus miscalculated while they were developping sumire--because they were so desperate in making her a three dimmensional character (because remember, she can’t be one of those normal girls, she has to be different), they erased who she was to the point that she isn’t a character anymore. she’s a girl that’s ten tropes rolled into one--she’s the badass good girl, she’s a girl with a   tragic backstory so akira can ‘fix’ her (her flaws are all accounted for and fixed and that is not a good thing in writing but i wont get into it now). its like they wrote this great backstory for a character and then panicked that you might not like her, so they shoved in twelve other tactics to make her likeable.

she’s pretty, she’s deep, she’s perfect. she’s hollow. Yoshizawa Sumire only exists to be a love interest in persona 5 royal. 

she can’t stand on her own legs as a character because she isn’t a character--she’s only there to be akira’s perfect other half; from her metaverse outfit, to the weirdly frequent and often one-on-one hangouts the two of them have, to their boss battle??? (oh yes a boss battle is necessary so that these two characters can move past whatever feud they have so their relationship can strengthen and they’re even more perfect together, etc, its another way atlus is forcing us to see how great sumire and akira are together) 

and that’s why i dont like shusumi as a ship. because why in hell is atlus trying to shove this “perfect waifu” down our throats when its supposed to be the player’s choice? we as the players have no choice but to see sumire constantly. its like atlus doesnt trust us to see how great their new character is on our own--which is a shame, because ironically if they had given us less sumire screentime i probably would have like how she was used way more. 

atlus tried too hard, and that was the cause of sumire’s downfall, and by extension, the downfall of shusumi. 

short explanation part two: anyway shusumi isnt for me because it never stood a chance against akiryu

if you like shusumi, great! good for you. but if i was, say, a shuann shipper, i would be so so so annoyed because its like atlus just shafted all of their other characters to make room for their shiny new one.

I don't like shusumi because the result was not enough given the sheer amount of screentime that that had together. It did not justify how much time and development it took away from the other characters. Atlus weakened it's own game by devoting so much of it to shusumi.
