Hi. Your posts show up on my dash and I think you have good and knowledgeable takes. What do we do when canon is inconsistent and contradictory? For example Winick!Jason vs Morrison!Jason pre new52? Like W!Jason says child sidekicks are dumb and shouldn't exist while M!Jason had him go get sidekick for himself. How should we reconcile this when discussing the characters? Thanks.

id say as a general point of reference that consistent, foundational character traits can persist regardless of bad comics. dick grayson is an example - in taylor's run he's written as a pretty idiot but in waid's worlds finest he's portrayed more accurately as a neurotic overachiever, and both runs were being published at the same time. it's about reading enough comics to be able to judge for urself what u want to keep and what u want to discard.

there's also broader metatexual reasons for why tangibly bad characterisation exists — winick and morrison mischaracterised and villianised talia al ghul in different ways to the detriment of her characterisation. talia's writing was a combination of bad writing and sexualised racism. similar issue w roy harper — his history with addiction is rewritten and his autonomy is undermined. it's always worth thinking about why a writer might interpret a character a certain way.

wrt to jason, he's an interesting case because unlike a lot of characters he has an actual, definitive comic thats the literal foundation for his existence in modern canon - under the red hood. jason's had the worst holistic writing by a considerable margin, and so people tend to discard his appearances depending on their taste (green arrow, batman and robin 2009, the recent gotham war arc, countdown, botc, etc) but utrh is his backstory and the context for his actions. winick's jason, through lost days and outsiders, feels like the same dude and is kinda the "base" version of the character. we also know what winick thought about morrison btw.

i actually don't think most of jason's actions pre-flashpoint are absurdly ooc, because he was conceptualised as a bad dude with hypocritical morals. theres a lot of dialogue around how bias has affected jason's writing historically but as red hood it feels like a believable radicalisation imo - winick's jason could be driven to hurt others. thats fine tbc because thats what makes him an interesting and complex character, but the issue is that no one was willing to commit to rehabilitating him into the bat-adjacent, generally heroic figure he's now recognised as. i personally think that him being chummy with the bats is a lot more egregious of a mischaracterisation than him blowing up a high school. there's no bridge between the jason that gloated when bludhaven got nuked and the jason that goes to batburger with the gang. i need more than the writer telling me that they like each other in a text box.

but again thats like. personal interpretation. every character with a book has comics that’re featured on every reading list, and then its a matter of ignoring or recontextualising the stuff u personally dont agree with. tis the nature of enduring canon. the picking and choosing.

but crocodile? we got NOTHING. we don't even know his last name. and i know some of them don't have last names but crocodile was a major villain. plus important characters without a last name kinda have a reason (sabo denounced his family name, buggy and shanks are implied to have been with the roger pirates since they were born)

like something happened to him to lose all his trust in other people and discard them like paper. he spent over a decade searching for pluton only to give up when luffy beat him? he willingly goes to impel down and planned to stay there until he heard whitebeard is gonna show up. he does fuck all to whitebeard. then he gives up on whitebeard, you know the reason why he's left impel down in the first place, then he saves ace, then he saves jinbe and luffy. he disappears for 10 real life years and he's back and we still got nothing on him

he doesn't trust people and yet pulled two bad bitches with swords. people praise how strong he is but he hasn't had a real fight with a real character who mattered since alabasta. and he's clearly strong cuz he got punched in the face with full blown haki and was still standing and he parried mihawk and doflamingo's attacks without any damage. speaking of doflamingo what the fuck was his deal with doflamingo? doffy clearly respected him enough to not believe he was beaten by smoker and he wanted a team up but then its never brought up again?? like was that just banter??

Like for one its just kind of annoying from a design perspective. Like okay at first glance its like “oh cool alien lettering!” But if you look at it for like two seconds longer, you immediately realize what its supposed to be which kinda kills the vibe. So like. Then you’re just like “so are humans supposed to be able to read this? Why would you use a font like that? Thats stupid.” And its stupid either way.

As for the way its used in canon. I have one issue: the combine seem to use the “cmb” logo to refer to themselves, which is of course short for Combine. But Breen treats calling them “The Combine” as a bad thing in his collaborator speech. Which is strange.

Idk the handling of the combine’s identity as like,,, a force within half life is strange and a little contradictory. But they also have a really stupid typeface which is more important to me.

how he met fisher was he got attacked by a red lizard, but the electrical shock killed it before it could bring him to its den. fisher found him and patched up his wounds, and in return he let her stay with him and help him

he grew kind of fond of fisher even before he knew that she was moon

he cant eat more than the bare minimum (a couple bluefruits or batflies) because if he eats too much it will give energy to the rot, leading to it taking over his body

he is constantly starving because of my previous point. for reference, if he didnt have the rot, his kind of slugcat (similar to the kind arti is) would be carnivorous, and eat about two small lizards per cycle.

he can let out electric shocks with his tail while jumping, letting him propel himself in the air. the shock itself doesnt propel him though, he has to do that.

he can let out electric shocks strong enough to kill a small lizard if his tail is touching it. he can also create electric spears, though his are a bit stronger than the scavengers

he is constantly in pain because of his right bottom leg, and kind of feels hes a burden on fisher (and, eventually, the rest of the group) because he always has to stop and take a break.

he experiences frequent panic attacks and hallucinations, especially in the small cramped shelters. he usually cuddles close to fisher during these (even if he’s embarrassed to), and she helps him realize that what he thinks is there really isnt there

when she first saw echo on her way to the other iterators superstructures, she immediately knew he was pebbles, for multiple reasons. she decided not to tell him just yet, because she figured all of this was already a lot for him and he didnt need more.

she is bigger and fluffier than pebbles, but thats just because she is just a big and fluffy slugcat. pebbles is just average

she usually had to convince pebbles to eat something, because he hated the sensory of it and was absolutely terrified of the rot, but she figured that eating something, even if its uncomfortable, was better than dying of starvation

she generally saw herself as a bit of a caretaker for pebbles, even if he would hate being seen as “needed to be cared for”

she actually kind of enjoys killing creatures, of course she doesnt do it for funsies, but when she has to, she loves showing off her strength and skills.

her absolute favorite food is blue fruits, she thinks the texture and the lil pupa in the middle is DELICOUS.

she is absolutely terrified of spiders, especially mother spiders and spitter spiders, and creatures that look like spiders, like dropwigs. when she sees one, she will go screaming and crying and bolting away

she likes holding pebbles whenever she can tell his leg hurts, even if he goes off kicking and hissing. she can tell its a relief for his overworked body

she was able to tell pebbles who she was and that she knew who he was in pebbles chamber, where all there was left was pearls. (she basically pointed to pearls abt her and back at herself, and pearls abt him she pointed at him)

she is sosososo happy that she gets to physicslly hang out with pebbles (and the other two later on :3)

the red on her body is bioluminescent and glows in the dark and water

she is a fantastic swimmer, despite not having any fins or anything. she can literally hold her breath for almost an entire cycle

Choso’s Reader I’ve actually already gotten this ask and it’s here. It’s an innate and inherited technique that’s extremely rare in her bloodline.

Inumaki’s Reader is a branch of cursed speech they call sirens. Only the women in her family get this inherited technique! They use their voices in a melodic way to control the target for periods of time. Longer the more tenured the “siren” is and shorter with the inexperienced ones. If you’ve ever watched HP it like the imperio curse.

Suguru/Nanami’s Reader does NOT have 2 techniques. She has 1 innate and inherited technique with a strong ability for reverse like Shoko, but she’s not as good as Shoko. From what I understand reverse technique is something all sorcerers CAN do but most never fully learn to “master” like Shoko or do at all. Her technique is innate on her mother’s side and inherited on her father’s side. If you’re really curious it’s been hinted before in the hidden inventory gc smaus and in the tea time smaus, and this getting so long so I can make a separate post about it like I did with Choso’s Reader if I get the ask for it.

Same goes for Megumi’s😊

Out of all of them though, 1 is special grade and 1 is a special grade 1 (and later questioned to be special grade).

Yesterday i was talking to a friend on discord, we were discussing headcanons when i began to share one of my personal favourites, trans Arcade

Its a fave hc of mine bcs i was able to work it into his lore in some ways, but i know it can be inaccurate yadayada but its a hc so it doesn’t matter

But then we get to talking abt the legion (as always) until my friend made a joke by saying “trans lanius” and my mind was blown

Not bcs it could be accurate in any way bcs it would defeat the whole idea of who he is BUT honestly? I kinda love it? In a way? Just the fact that its SUCH a crazy hc for him specifically.

Like, his top surgery scars would be really messy, jagged and deep, bcs he would’ve done them himself for sure

If there is any such thing as testosterone medication in the wasteland, it would’ve mostly done wonders for his voice and less so his body, bcs i feel that a trans lanius wouldnt be so muscular under his armour

And i feel that he probably woulda had body dysmorphia at the start of said transition, but after joining the legion it made him feel like a ‘real man’ and maybe he grew to hate women so much bcs he feels theyre less than him or maybe more so that he hates them bcs he doesn’t wanna think abt what he used to be? Its kinda contradictory to what i just said but it could be a possibility

Like i said i know the term trans lanius is like incredibly stupid and just would never be a possibility at all but thats why i was so mind blown when my friend made a simple joke

I’m glad I could inspire some stuff for you :D !!!! I love using line breaks because it makes it Super clear when there’s a scene change of some kind or a time skip — literally one of the best writing tools ever fr fr

and !!!! that’s so valid on sometimes finding pov changes disorienting, I think a lot of it comes down to how it’s done/how smooth it is?? I tend to mostly stick to pov changes in different scenes (i.e. scene 1 being grian’s pov, scene 2 being scar’s) but I’ve found it REALLY fun to pov change in the middle of a scene. the key to that I’ve found is changing to a diff pov when the character is responding to something. it makes it really smooth and you get to go into how that character is thinking/feeling in the moment :D

I really really love pov switches because I like getting into the nitty gritty of how a character is feeling (case in point with like an arrow DFNFNFKK) and it makes the story feel fuller to me if that makes sense?? it adds a lot of weight when you know Exactly how both characters are feeling (unless the writer Doesn’t want you to know immediately hehe)

and :D using the parentheses is always really like. I love using them when a character is having contradictory thoughts and the thoughts in the parentheses are the True feelings or they’re an afterthought kinda deal :3c I’m glad you like using them!!!

but 🥺 I’m glad you could get more than just a story from my writing and find things to try out yourself and work them into your writing too <3333

i was listening to catapult and i was just thinking, "is this song gay or not?". and then i was thinking about how every song alex writes about women is like "i love women, they hurt you sometimes, but i love women" and when he writes about men its always "I HATE MEN THEYRE ARROGANT AND MANIPULATIVE AND WEIRDLY FASHIONABLE AND EFFORTLESS AND GAAAAAH". which is so real tbh

cause heres the thing about catapult, its again about an effortless man who can charm anyone, men and women. which includes alex, seemingly. and its a little fruity, but thats kinda the point, isnt it? hes so contradictive when describing the man. hes hot, charming, and just kinda the cool idealistic stereotype. but hes also a manipulative player that alex can see straight through, even though alex is charmed by him too. the lyrics are contradictory because alex feels conflicted. idk maybe im reading too much into it. fire song at the end of the day

It's like yeah, ultimatly who gives an actual shit about the specific name for something. I feel this way about identifing peoples identities and also when it comes to the words we chose to describe systems of oppression. Ultimately the importance lies in being able to communicate. And if a singular word doesn't apply, that just use a sentence. Thats probably what you'll have to do anyways 🙃 or multiple paragraphs that still end up meaning nothing.

Im just annoyed at the people who seem hellbent on subdividing transphobia experienced into the categories of "transmysoginy exempt" and "transmysoginy applicable" as some kind of universal truth depending on your agab and perceived transition "direction"? While also denying the legitimacy of transmasc specific transphobia. Like. They seem kinda contradictory.

Like, if transmasc are exempt from transmysoginy, (which could be debatable depending of the circumstance and deffinitions at play) than its extra fucking shitty to claim terms we use to describe "transmasc specific opression"* are like.... inherently misogynist or something i dont even know.

If you want to claim that the shit transmascs deal with is non-specific transphobia while specifying transmysoginy as something that blanketly does not apply to anyone except transfems than uhhh............. i do have some unfortunate information for you about the medical industry and how it treats transmascs. And how a lot of people veiw trans people as "just their assigned gender" even if they claim or act in support.

I like f1 I like the sport and Max is superb at what he does and he does it in a very unique way. I think an underrated aspect of the role Max plays and has played in f1 is that hes very emotionally fulfilling .. idk if that makes sense mfldsj. Like he puts the thumb on the scale. Even inside a machine he makes himself heard and seen and accounted for and u know that its a person in there and that person matters. U answer to him not the car. For example just this weekend ocon fucked his lap and Max did not hesitate to do the same. He does that constantly regardless of whats at stake. he operates on this super interesting and contradictory spectrum of absurd metronome like consistency and red hot bursts of passion. Like a person. Its uncomfortable sure but its real and its genuine and approachable and I think its why people tend to experience f1 thru him, as a fan or as a hater lmfao. It also explains why hes such a hit on ao3 and f1c in general because hes easy to relate to and pluck an interesting character out of that mess. Like his childhood, his relationship wid his dad and racing and how fucked up it got at times and how a lot of his success was built on survival , all of that is presented to us in all its complexity and yet Max has never bothered to make it digestible and glamorous and beautiful and meaningful like it just is what it is. How we choose to understand it, and him, thats not his problem. For somebody whos been in the media circus for as long as he has since he was a literal kid like to remain true to that it takes a lot of resolve. A lot of nerve. And I wud admire that in anyone but especially an f1 driver I think its sick. So ig thats it .
