Not sure if you are still doing rankings. But I am watching 19 and I am also really enjoying your recaps of them as well. It has got me thinking about siblings. So I am wondering what is your ranking of sibling dynamics in the skamverse, you can include parental or found family dynamics if you want.

Hi anon 🍪 I was going to say this in response to another ask from a few weeks ago (about ranking Isak and Sana pairings), but it was one of those asks where I started replying and it got so long that I sent the ask to the drafts where it’s still chilling. My drafts folder is a boulevard of partially answered asks gvhvh.

But anyway, what I was gonna say then, is that I’m pretty much done ranking stuff across Skams. For a couple reasons, one being that now that 2 of the 3 remaining Skams are doing a new gen, the shows have gotten harder and harder for me to compare. Like, Skam France and Druck so obviously have completely different goals and execution, that it feels ridiculous for me to compare Daphné and Lola, and Kiki, Zoe and Nora. They were handled so differently that, unless I really love Daphné and Lola despite the skamfr of it all (which isn’t the case), the scales are massively tilted in Druck’s favor.

The other reason has to do with how to handle the top spots. And, in this case, I also find it unfair to compare, let’s say, Kiki, Zoe and Nora, and Fatou and Ilai. Because Kiki, Zoe and Nora are all central characters, whereas Ilai is a supporting character. And one of the biggest parts of Nora’s season was the relationship between all three sisters, whereas the Fatou-Ilai relationship is mostly there to give context to Fatou’s personality. So, sure, I can like Fatou and Ilai better, but Druck has dedicated a lot more time and effort to Kiki, Zoe and Nora.

(Edit!: I forgot to say this, but thanks for letting me know that you’re reading and enjoying my 19 recaps. I don’t mind not getting a ton of notes, because I know 19 doesn’t have a huge audience, but notes are kind of how I know the posts are reaching someone. So having a person say they’re reading and liking them goes a long way. 💛)

That being said, I will now go over the different sibling relationships in the Skams, and I’ll keep it to actual siblings, because if I start including parents and found family, this ask would be fated to the drafts folder lol.

I generally enjoyed these relationships:

Sana and Elias: they were the first sibling relationship in Skam, and I think it was a more or less good portrayal of a nuanced relationship, that isn’t all peace and love, but also not hate all the time. I liked Elias, as well as the attempt to develop him and his friends through Hei Briskeby.

Amira, Essam and Omar: Really more Amira and Essam, since Omar had such dad vibes that he really seemed to relate to his siblings more from a position of “ha ha these children are so moody!!” Essam was such an interesting character, and I’m disappointed that he got axed when Druck went in a different direction with their new gen. 

Kiki, Zoe and Nora: I mean, they’re iconic! Along with Viri’s “season”, I think s5 has been one of the best attempts to make up for the Vilde season we never got. I think all three characters could realistically take the Vilde role in a Skam version. Once Mamachwitz is out of the picture, Nora becomes less of a Vilde, but I do think she’s one in the first part of the season when she’s still living with her mom. I loved the way Druck explored how siblings come together and apart when their parent can’t parent. 

Fatou and Ilai: I like when these type of shows make it clear that the siblings are subject to their own pressures, I also experienced impostor’s syndrome at uni for a time, so I could relate to Ilai. I think Druck did well with the time they had to dedicate to this relationship.

Emma and Nora: This was Eskam utilizing all their braincells. I think Emma is such an important character, I love that eskam was very clear in not blaming Emma’s SA on her drinking or partying, and that it continued to not judge Emma as she partied and drank. They walked a fine line with showing that Nora knew it wouldn’t be Emma’s fault if something did happen to her, but also being worried that something would happen to her. Because it’s only human to worry even if you know the theory. It was also a great way to illustrate Nora’s struggle with knowing the theory and applying it.

I generally like these relationships:

Dani and Cris: I don’t like Dani, but I’m glad he was a source of support and love for Cris.

Dounia and Kasim: They had so much potential tbh, even in their actual incarnation as non hijabi but practicing Muslim, and gay Muslim who doesn’t practice but does take comfort in Islam. 

Yasmina and Elias: I mean, it’s wtfck. Elias will drop gendered slurs because the writers are useless. But they’ve had a couple conversations so far, which is nice. It’s nice that wtfck is giving their relationship facetime.

I can’t really comment on Daphné and Lola, nor Sana and Rami from Skam Italia.

I didn’t like these relationships:

Eleonora and Filippo: I mean, I didn’t watch their Eleonora season, so that’s one strike. But the other is that Iiii hate it when the Skams make the William fight about fighting homophobes. And then Skam Italia took it a step further by wanting to be “nuanced” by making Eleonora’s brother be gay, so she’d look even worse for not approving of Edoardo fighting homophobes. Also, Filippo looked younger than half the teen cast, so lol.

Imane and Idriss: I fucking hate that Idriss took Ingrid’s side in the Ingrid/Imane fight. There are two special seats in hell reserved for David H and Niels.

Nora and Sporty Spice: I realize that they don’t know they’re twins separated at birth, but still, you’d think Sporty Spice would be less creepy about his sister.

there are a bunch of things that i’ve picked up from the last clip that might be worth mentioning so i’ll quickly go through these

1. when eva talks about wanting to join NGOs related to muslim communities, viri then suggests she can help in the association and looks at la bass - but right when she ends, she looks directly at amira

immediately, amira picks on the clue and acts like a moderator between the girls and las labass.

(and normally i’m not a “peep at the body language” person but amira has her arm crossed over her body for the whole interaction)

even when dounia lets us know that is how amira has been feeling for a while, when amira talks about her reasons to open up the association, she’s mostly looking at the girl squad, seeking their approval

like this entire clip is a REALLY good way to exemplify how amira is torn between her two worlds, but this interaction immediately shows how she’s quite literally the bridge between the communication between these two.

and whenever she can’t weigh in, she looks super stressed

2. i see a lot of people giving eva shit for talking but i think this is pretty on character for her. when she starts talking about the NGO stuff, she’s clearly trying to start a new conversation that hopefully gets her to know more about the association - i find it a little bit too self-congratulatory to just be like “oh  i’ve been trying to get involved in your culture y’know” but that just adds to the overall white savior complex that is not strange to find in the girl squad, at all. i personally think that makes her reaction to dounia’s reply even better: when she says that labass isn’t a NGO, eva looks stunned if a bit embarrassed, but ends up solemnly (and silently) agreeing with her

i’ve also seen people kinda correct themselves on their view that eva is a highly perceptive person, but here she DOES escalate down the situation once cris and viri take over. when dounia says that she doesn’t care if people think they’re “too closed”, eva is the only one who talks to verbally agree with her, and doesn’t weight in on the subject in any time

(just compare viri’s reaction to eva’s, she’s not taking her friends’ side in this)

to me it seems like this entire conversation is less than a “disaster” and more of a moment when the girls and eva especially are uncomfortably confronted with their wrong perceptions of muslim communities and labass for the first time!, which is ultimately a moment of understanding and growth for them..... for now, i guess.

3. ...but i guess, when eva speaks again is when the party thing resurrects. however, this is one thing that no one has had in mind: when dounia shared her story about how her friends started sidelining her whenever she went to parties, amira IMMEDIATELY jumped in their defense. in this situation, the girls are literally saying exactly what amira told dounia on the second clip of the first episode. it’s in fact how fiercely amira defends the girl squad what makes dounia be excited to meet them in the first place.

however, lucas’ party was a thing that happened, and we know now that amira has expressed her feelings to dounia and so her perception of all of that has changed

it’s also only when defending the party situation with amira that eva finally speaks over amira and traps her with a statement that she can’t deny

enough things have been said about how eva talks like adapting to amira never drinking, smoking or hooking-up is a tremendous effort and how this is basically them doing the bare minimum when they’ve never tried to insert themselves on other activities that amira does that aren’t botellones - right until now. but i think this is a link to both the first point and the second one. the girls treat amira like their spokesperson between them and las labass, and at the beginning of the season amira was taking that role herself. but also, eva the Woke has to feel like she has to get points for not being a jerk and excluding her friend who doesn’t drink nor smoke from their get-togethers, leaning again on the white savior complex.

Predictions for the rest of the ep?

Right now the life of Amira is in shambles, but we know Eskam likes pain so I think she still hasn’t hit rock bottom, and that these last clips are gonna be tought. These are the things that I think could happen

1) Something could happen with Dani. I’m especially suspicious of this one seeing their last amazing clip, you know? They seemed too happy. I don’t know what’s gonna happen tho, I don’t think Dani is gonna do anything too drastic, but maybe Amira is gonna see something that would make her suspicious or something like that.

2) Something happens with Kasim. I posted yesterday that I think Amira’s face at the end of yesterday’s clip could be her realizing maybe she has to understand Kasim, and she goes to talk to him (maybe to his house?) and shit happens, probably with Dounia. I think from now on we’ll see Kasim in a better light, as Amira tries to understand him.

3) Something Islamophobic happens. I mean, with today clip (and tbh we already found out when they hang the banner) we learned there are violent islamophobes in the High School. I think it’s gonna get worse, and maybe we’ll even see it through the Mallorca group chat, cause I think the islamophobes are in there (I’m rooting for Kike) and I don’t know, maybe they’ll have microagressions there. 

4) Amira realises they only chose her to do the graduation speech just because she’s muslim and, just as the principal said in the last clip, they’re “striving for integration” and shit like that that came across as very fake and performative for me. She’ll then probably think she doesn’t have the skills required to give a speech, she’ll have a meltdown (maybe Noora’s meltdown? because we didn’t have it with Nora right?) and she’ll have to recover her confidence in herself, build herself up again.

I honestly hate that these are my theories, but it doesn’t seem things are gonna get better anytime soon :(

Edit-anon again: I wondered if I could ask you a favour. I know Damira fics are your specialty. But deep inside I’ve got a feeling they’ll end up together somehow. Meanwhile, I’m not so sure what Eskam will do with Kasim’s plotline in the end. I’ve got a sneaky suspicion they’ll just wrap it up very quickly. And that would be a waste of potential.

So here’s my question: could you write a Kasim fanfic? It doesn’t have to feature Lucas (though I’ve got a soft spot for Lucasim, call it a guilty pleasure :3). I just really wonder what happened to Kasim after Dounia caught him, and what he’s going through now. And I’m afraid we’ll never find out. :((

Hi! I know what you mean but the thing is I don’t think I would be able to write a fic about it because I don’t know what I would write at this point. If you want my theory, it’s always been that Dounia doesn’t care about her brother being gay, she cares about her brother using Amira and lying to her, I think she’s disappointed but I don’t see her telling her mom about Kasim being gay or anything like that. But then Lucas saying that Kasim is suffering had me like...what’s going on. So I don’t really know tbh So yeah I’m really sorry but I can’t see myself writing that fic, hope that’s okay
