I like how both in canon and in fanfic Rin and Venka do and say things that are so fucking GAY and if you took a scene out of context and showed it to someone who's never read tpw before you'd think they're in desperate love with each other and then they keep having moments like that but literally nothing gets done or said about it and the tension never really leaves but it doesn't grow into anything more and you're left imagining that they were dating and clinging to the smallest crumbs of these two because you're a useless sapphic and you love the dynamic between these two and you feel a gaping ache in your heart whenever you think of them

happy pride i wrote a timber (timbern?) fic

this is the first chapter and I hope everyone likes it :) its gonna be 10 chapters and i have already written 8 of them! if you would be interested in being a beta reader please dm me!!! the fic is mostly canon compliant and based on Red Robin, TDR, Batman (2016) and nightwing (2016) and other contemporary scatterings of Tim in recent comics. Actually, this relates to something I heard on the radio: your first impression of someone is formed before you even say a word. So, people see Kaede and Shuichi as the protagonist and detective, their mind goes to the last protagonist and detective duo, Makoto and Kyouko. The same technique is used with Nagito and Ouma: you see Nagito, who looks like Makoto and whose name is an anagram of “Naegi Makoto da” and think “Makoto Naegi”. You see Ouma with his symbolism and don’t trust him, you see

Last note on this, but I also find it ironic that Nagito, who is mistrusted and disliked by MAJORITY OF THE FANDOM, is proven a reliable narrator. Kaede and Shuichi, who are trusted and liked by MAJORITY OF THE FANDOM, are proven to be the exact opposite.

Yeah, Ouma is an exceedingly clever lesson on not to let first impressions settle your curiosity...especially because the most famous seer of all time earned a reputation for being an insane liar when she WASN'T.

Right, and here’s the other interesting thing- Kaede’s impression that Ouma is ‘just a prankster child after attention’ is something that comes up early on and it’s NOT treated like a good thing. Ouma’s response to this thought process was to tell her if she kept it up, she would die. And lo and behold, she does. She also spends a good bit of the next FTE being dressed down for her illogical comments, and told that it’s because Ouma cares, that he’s doing that.

It’s easy to forget that impressions taken by the protagonist are just that, impressions. They don’t have a truly solid basis, and even a video that says ‘these guys commit laughable crimes’ is only the vaguest affirmation of this impression. Yet, it’s still amazingly powerful; it teaches you little, affirms the bias and gives shockingly little leeway to even question why his situation is what it is. We do not even get to verify his reputation, gee, I wonder why?

Speaking of the situation with Kaede and Shuichi being especially well-liked, it’s interesting how Kodaka went to pains to make both of them likeable, yet so flimsy in their perception. Ouma is made to be distrusted or otherwise disrespected and patronised, while Kodaka put the most work into his character, making him the most sharp and perceptive of anyone there.

Poor Chef like he's trying his best to say /do what's right for these kids like it's not his fault that they bring in toys that could have a number of diseases and cause a number of problems (such as literally destroy the building) and the kindergarten could be sued. Like, it's not his fault that the kids drank the ONE cannon thing that makes him happy in life.

So I need help, I'm planning to start my drawings for next pride month bc I never get to finish my series of drawings bc June is always the busiest month for me (along side November) and I always struggle to plan accordingly so now I want to start early so I get to do all that I want to do! And for next year I want to do outfit swappings between ships

wot reread: the shadow rising (chap 11- chap 15)

spoilers through the end of the shadow rising

1. Egwene goes adventuring in TAR! She’s trying to investigate to see if the Tanchico story is true. So I got the elephant skeleton and the giraffe skeleton, but the ‘big as a bear but with two long teeth’, I’m not sure what that one is. This is also where the Mercedes-Benz logo shows up, lol. We’ve got the bracelets of suffering, the broken ter’angreal, the not-broken angreal. Lots going on in the Panarch’s Palace.

2. One of Egwene’s dreams: “Mat wrestling with a Seanchan woman who tied an invisible leash to him.” 🥺🥺😥😥��😭 The leashes theme is so painfully real for so many of the characters and it hurts my heart.

3. Ah, and she accidentally travels to the Aiel Waste in the dream because of thinking about something Aviendha mentioned about Aiel Wise ones being able to interpret dreams.

4. She meets Amys and has a spotting of Birgitte! Nice! Not bad for her first non-ring trip. She gets her formal invite to visit Amys and learn dreamwalking (under semi-false pretense -- she does lie about being a full Aes Sedai sister, as they’ve been doing this whole trip).

5. Elayne learned about first-sisters in the last book, and now she learns about sister-wives (women who marry the same man). It was implied in the last book (”let no man” etc) but Aviendha makes it clear here.  Aviendha points out that, in Aiel culture, if that if two women are close to each other but then attracted to the same man, it’s considered better for them to marry the guy than to ruin their relationship by fighting over said guy. the ‘two hands’ meme, essentially. I wonder if the show will also give us brother-husbands as well. They seem willing to do the poly stuff so far and even expand on it a bit so 🤞.

6. Aviendha gets summoned to Rhuidean and she’s so unhappy about it. 🥺 🥺 🥺  it’s okay bby. 🥺 🥺 🥺

7. Perrin and Mat having a conversation about the Two Rivers and about Rand’s ta’veren pull on them -- Mat can’t even tell Perrin that he will go with him, now that the option is on the table, while Perrin says the one reason to go is able to outweigh all the reasons to stay with Rand. In fact, Perrin was able to actually start packing to leave as soon as he heard the rumors about Whitecloaks in the Two Rivers. Though, since he is one of the people the Whitecloaks are specifically hunting, he has strong guilt-based reasons to want to go solve the problem.

8. Yeah, Mat refers here to the (now-established through changes in the Rand/Egwene backstory) tradition of the Two Rivers’ parents arranging marriages for the Two Rivers’ boys without their knowledge or consent, and basically just presenting it as a done deal and steamrolling them into it.

9. Berelain dismisses the idea of chasing after Mat because she thinks they’re too similar. I’m just gonna sit and imagine that plotline for a moment, if they’d done it. This belief of hers tells us a lot either about how she sees herself or how she sees Mat. Or both. Ironically, I think this romance might have worked out a lot better than Berelain thinks it would. I don’t think she’s anywhere near as good at reading men as she believes that she is (as we saw from how badly she read Rand in chapter 2).

10. lol, Berelain is 100% unwilling to admit to Perrin that Rand has absolutely forbidden her to ever try to speak to him in private again. Fear is strong but her pride is stronger. Also, she goes into his rooms as well without knocking, and so catches him shirtless, a common theme from TDR, now brought back again.

11. “I always get what I want in the end.” Again, considering how total and complete Rand’s rejection of her was, this stinks of her trying to salvage her pride.

12. And here Faile, for possibly the first time in her life, actually WANTS all the power that comes along with her birthright, because she’s realized that being seen as ‘just’ a peasant actually doesn’t have the kind of power that she feels she would need to challenge Berelain. That being said. Kinda hate that it’s in service to what is, essentially, a ‘catfight’, as Faile’s struggle about whether or not to accept her upbringing now that she can see that it has things that would help her get what she wants in her current life actually is compelling.

13. Ah, yeah, Berelain was somewhat interested in Perrin before, but only enough to try to lure him to Mayene, but she wasn’t going to go particularly out of her way for it. It’s Faile attacking her with a knife that makes her decide that she wants him enough to change her plans in order to try to yank him away from Faile. It’s now much more about making Faile lose him than it is about actually getting Perrin herself (going back to Nynaeve’s accurate character analysis of Berelain!).

14. And when Rhuarc breaks up the fight, Faile tries to attack him, too. Between this and hitting Perrin when she felt frustrated and angry, violence really does seem like it’s Faile’s primary language, and one that she is equally willing to use on enemies, neutral parties, and the people she claims to care about. Which. Is not my personal preference in characters. To put it mildly. But it’s also an interesting contrast to how Perrin constantly struggles with the idea of violence, that he fell in love with someone who defaults to violence so readily.

15. REDSTONE DOOR TIME!

16. Fascinating and delightful and creepy. Love me some redstone doorway time. This is just one of those sections that is an amazing journey to read. This book has several of those sections, which may be why I remember it as one of my favorites. There’s a great slow-building horror in this section.

17. Mat learns his fate. 🥺🥺😥😥😭😭

18. Doorway couldn’t handle three people inside all at once, and one of those people being Rand. It got stressed. And Mat has to again forcibly remind himself that Rand isn’t who he used to be, because when he looks at Rand, he does still see the same person. lol, he thinks that Rand is acting super-cool and wishes he could emulate it.

19. And Moiraine is mad at Rand for trying to find his own answers but, of course, when he turns the question on her, she’s no more ready to share the questions that she asked and the answers that she got. We also find out here that Mat was able to easily speak an ancient dialect of the Old Tongue with the Aelfinn and didn’t even notice he was doing it..

this one’s for winternight and the eye of the world. it’s the start of the world going to hell and being overwhelmed by the shadow (“are you afraid of the darkness?”), and it’s essentially rand against the world. he can’t just walk away from it— his house is attacked by trollocs, and the only option he has is to go with moiraine. he doesn’t really know what he’s up against, only that he’s up against something bad.

. HERO — family of the year

I don’t wanna be your hero

I don’t wanna be a big man

I just wanna fight with everyone else

this song’s all about not wanting to be a part of something big, just wanting a simple and easy life. at the beginning of the great hunt, rand really does not want to be the dragon reborn— I mean, who would? but it’s a role that he’s forced into, nonetheless. at his heart, he’s just a farmboy who wants to go home. moiraine kind of forces his destiny on him, not letting him postpone it or shove it aside. but at this point, he just doesn’t want to be a hero. the song itself is very soft (and acoustic to boot), which I think nicely represents the simple life that rand wants.

. UNUSUAL — typhoon

get your pitchforks out

the crowd is coming and they’ve named you

why, gentle mother, must you wring your hands and weep?

tide brings you a sword, sword will cut you free

dead demands a tribute in the hour of our need

blood be the river to wash the ledgers clean

oh, it took so much self-restraint to not put more than two songs from this album on this playlist. offerings is just so good AND highly existential, so if you’re wanting more sad rand hours, go listen to it. I think this song best fits rand’s start of really being the dragon reborn, around (you guessed it) the dragon reborn. the world is kind of a mess, and he doesn’t really know what to do, so he just does what he thinks he should do. he’s chosen by the pattern— the world demanded a dragon to save the world, and he was the unlucky soul born on the slopes of dragonmount. you know, his blood on the rocks of shayol ghul and all that. this song, like the one preceding it, is softer— rand hasn’t hardened himself like he will in later books. however, around halfway through, it gets louder and brings in more drums. tdr is the start of rand’s transition from farmboy to dragon reborn, in both good ways and bad.

. KIDS — mgmt

picking insects off of plants

no time to think of consequences

this song focuses a lot on the idea of self-control/self-restraint— not doing more than you have to, good or bad. it reminds me a lot of rand’s earlier experiences with channeling and being ta’veren. saidin is dangerous, what with the taint and all, and drawing too much of either half of the one power has severe consequences. he’s not as in control of his ta’veren-ness as he will be in later books— like his channelling, it’s a bit all over the place. the quote at the beginning of the music video (it’s friedrich nietzsche, not mark twain, but whatever) also ties in with this idea— if you’re not careful, you can become the very thing you were fighting against.

. LOUDER THAN EVER — cold war kids

moiraine’s “death” is a tipping point for rand— he feels like he could’ve prevented it, even though moiraine literally tells him that he couldn’t, and that what happened was the best possible outcome. after she passes through the portal, rand realizes that he took her presence for granted. her advice was good, if often unwelcome, and after her death rand just ends up going off the rails in so many different ways. when she returns in a memory of light, he realizes how helpful she was to him.

. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT WITH ME — cold war kids

I’m trying not to let it show

the taint on saidin is just really like that, huh? rand can tell that something’s wrong, with lews therin’s voice in his head. the thing is, he doesn’t let anyone know because he’s 1) scared of showing weakness and 2) sane people don’t normally hear voices. this song is fast, but not in an upbeat way— it feels chaotic, panicked, and just barely in control. the singer is almost shouting the lyrics instead of singing them, contributing to that feeling. I think it embodies most male channellers’ experiences with the taint— it isn’t smooth or calm like saidar, it’s a raging river of fire.

. DREAMS OF CANNIBALISM — typhoon

unhand me, I am not a criminal

but I’ve played a guilty part

in the modern sense that one pretends their life is original

I wrote a book and I will call it something cynical

the story’s slow, the hero does not change

and if he can, then he won’t anyway

instead his foes and lovers all become identical

this song ends with the line “soon enough you will be dancing at my funeral,” and I can’t come up with something that encompasses rand-as-the-dragon more. people are terrified of him— hell, even he’s terrified of him. the world doesn’t want a dragon, but they got one anyways. the second set of verses above is a more textual examination of rand at this point— a crown of swords through crossroads of twilight is incredibly slow, and rand doesn’t change much throughout those books (hence why this song covers 4 books). he could make a change in his life if he tried, but he doesn’t, since he thinks he needs to shut others out to protect them. the whole song seems to be conveying the idea of being stuck and not going anywhere, but running from yourself, which, to be fair, is very close to what rand experiences in his own head in these books.

. GHOSTS THAT WE KNEW — mumford and sons

so lead me back

and close my eyes to my recent disgrace

so give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light

’cause oh, that gave me such a fright

I picked a soft song for the softer scene in the gathering storm where min and rand are talking about how cold he’s become. he realizes that he doesn’t have to fake an uncaring and unemotional nature— to be human is to feel, and it’s not bad to be human. the song is about going through something that’s wearing you down (a common interpretation is depression), and knowing that you have someone helping you through it. min sticks with rand during almost everything that happens from lord of chaos to the end of the series. she’s a support for him, and too stubborn to ever leave him, no matter what.

. DARKER — typhoon

I tried, you know, just to toe the line

love all the neighbors and live in the light

sure, I stumbled sometimes

self-contained; a convenient lie

every source of pain, every sting of pride

had to come from the outside

you won’t even fight me fair

wait for the darkness, catch me unaware

yeah, you pull me close

then you twist the knife

of course, that happy, warm feeling can’t last, because that scene is followed by semirhage being sadistic and deciding that now is the perfect time to use this new torture device. because of that, rand ends up shutting himself off even more than before. he’s suspicious and cruel, and thinks only for himself. it’s scary, frankly. darker, like all the songs on the album that it’s from, is very existential, though this song is, fittingly, darker than the others. it’s filled with the sense of impending death and strong suspicion that characterizes rand at this point in his life. he tried to open up, and look where it got him. this quick change is mirrored by the sharp musical contrast between the quiet, acoustic ‘ghosts that we knew’ and and the more drum-heavy, electric, and distorted ‘darker.’

. MOUNTAIN AT MY GATES — foals

I see a mountain in my way

it’s looming larger by the day

I see a darkness in my fate

I’ll drive my car without the brakes

through lanes and stone rows

black granite, wind blows

fire lake and far flame

dark clouds gather ’round

yeah, it’s farther away

its shadow gets smaller day after day

the obvious scene for this song is the events leading up to rand’s epiphany on dragonmount. I mean, ‘mountain’ is in the song’s name. I think that this song works well to represent the weight and lack of direction he feels in the days building up to that. something that works especially well about this song is how it builds, both lyrically and musically. the song starts with a hopeless and dark tone to the lyrics, and stays that way for a while. the bridge (second set of lyrics above) is where the tone starts to change. the bridge also uses a lot of imagery that one can tie to the buildup— the streets of ebou dar, the rocky and windy peak of dragonmount, the belly of fire in the mountain itself and tar valon, the city that the peak looks over. the song then crescendos into its final segment, where the singer sings “give me my way/give me my love/give me my choice/give me my fate/give me my lungs/give me my voice.” to me, these represent rand’s realization that the reason the wheel keeps turning is so that people can live again and love again.

. COLORFUL — jukebox the ghost

we're just getting started

take your fears and let them go

for the lovers and the broken-hearted

I! love! this! song! I haven’t found another song that captures that feeling of hope in darkness: when everything around you has gone to hell, but you keep going because the darkness isn’t all there is. that’s how veins of gold ends— with rand realizing that there’s something worth fighting and living for. the gathering storm literally ends with rand laughing without bitterness for the first time in months, if not years— he’s finally looking on the bright side of life again.

. BEAUTIFUL LIFE — the collection

you do not have to be good

even the best of us have been misunderstood

so get up onto your feet

the sun is shining repentance through the leaves

its rays will wash you clean

this one’s for the end of a memory of light, when rand decides to leave and live the rest of his life on his terms. he wants to explore the world, without the pressure of his past and who he was weighing on him. he has a chance to slow down and appreciate this “beautiful life,” instead of rushing through it towards tarmon gai’don. and that’s what this song is about, i think. it’s not super peppy, and neither is rand at this point. it’s more of a quiet and peaceful acceptance.

first of all, the wheel of time series takes place over the span of two years, and rand does so much within that time. within this playlist, I don’t think of this song as an ending, rather a summary of rand’s life through the books. I specifically want to talk about the iconic refrain of “I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier.” it serves as a bookend to rand’s arc as a character— initially he refuses his role as the dragon reborn (even though he’s suited for it, due to his heritage and upbringing) because he doesn’t want to fight in that way. during the bulk of the series, he embraces a role as a fighter, even though he doesn’t have the soul for it. and finally, he realizes that he isn’t a weapon, and that he never was. on another note, the line “these changes ain’t changing me/that cold-hearted boy I used to be” hits a bit too close to his character.

Compromise ~ a TDC one-shot

I was rereading some scenes in TDR and trying to figure out what would happen once Billy tells his mum about him and Arsinoe and this happened.

Compromise.

~ If Arsinoe and Mira hadn’t gone back to Fennbirn and Billy had told his mum about him and Arsinoe ~

It was stupid how nervous Billy was right now, standing outside the library of his house. His mother was in there, with Jane by the sound of it. He rubbed his hands on his vest slowly, unsure of why his palms were clammy.

He knocked on the door and pushed it open. Jane and his mother turned to him and he tried to straighten his posture, lest his mother try to reprimand him like she did Arsinoe last week at breakfast.

Billy had never seen his girlfriend so irritated then when his mother had told her that “only ugly people slouched.” If looks could kill both would be dead, especially after Arsinoe, in protest, had slouched further.

“My posture won’t change my lack of pretty, trust me,” she had said, gesturing to her scars.

“Billy, sweetheart, I thought you were out with the Misses Rolanth,” his mother said, delicately prompting Billy to come into the room, not that he really needed permission.

“We just got back. Jane, can I speak to mother alone please?” Jane nodded, an unreadable expression on her face, as if she knew something he didn’t. He waits until he hears the door click behind him before continuing to speak. “Mother, we need to talk about Christine Hollen,” his mother’s face lights up, her blue eyes becoming excited as she beckons him to sit beside her.

“Oh, I thought this day wouldn’t come. You can’t ask her yet, you’ll have to wait until your father returns, he has the family ring after all. Oh, the wedding—“ Billy sighs as she rambles before cutting her off as politely as possible.

“Actually, mother, I needed to talk about the ceasing of Christine coming to tea as I have no intentions of marrying her. Ever,” his mothers face fell.

“Billy, she would be the perfect bride. And you two would have such beautiful children. Besides, no other girl would go against her or her family.” Billy smiled and took his mother’s hands, in a comforting motion.

“Actually, mother, I’ve already fallen in love with someone more than willing to go against Christine,” his mothers eyebrows furrowed in confusion and then flattened in realisation. She stood.

“Really, the scarred one? You couldn’t even consider her sister?” Billy stood, trying to be polite despite the rage that filled him at his mothers ignorance.

“The scarred one’s name is Arsinoe. She is beautiful and funny, loyal, smart as a whip and unlike her sister, she has my whole heart and she has given me every indication that I have hers. I have every intention of marrying her when she is ready and I would appreciate if you could become comfortable with that notion with some haste mother,” and then he turns and walks out.

She has my whole heart is what rings through Elizabeth Chatworth’s head long after her son walked away from her. She hadn’t even realised that her son had fallen in love while he had been gone. She had been too busy trying to keep her family from becoming complete pariahs, not helped of course by the two girls (queens, Billy had said when they arrived) who she had to look after.

She was now walking down her halls, looking for the queens, when she heard music. Their music room was mostly for show as neither Jane nor Billy were truly musicians, so the soft, sweet piano music couldn’t be any of the Chatworth’s doing.

Elizabeth followed the sound, expecting to find Miss Mirabella as the culprit of the music. It was beautiful and sweet and something that seemed to reflect the older sister.

She was surprised when she pushed the door open to find Miss Arsinoe, her back towards the door as she pressed the keys to form a delicate and poetic melody. Elizabeth leaned against the doorframe to listen to the music, using the time to construct her thoughts into something coherent.

She didn’t even notice the music had stopped until Arsinoe spoke.

“Are you going to stand there and keep staring at me or did you need something?” Elizabeth sighed and stepped further into the room, taking a seat next to Arsinoe on the piano bench.

“My son has informed me that you and he are… have deep affections for one another,” she doesn’t miss the slight flush that appears on Arsinoe’s face or the way her fingers ghost over the keys as if she wants to move them. Elizabeth smiles at this. She remembers how it felt to be in love, a long time ago, before her husband had become the philanderer that he was. “For him, I am willing to compromise with you,” Arsinoe turns her head to watch and scrutinise her, deep coffee eyes making Elizabeth feel completely exposed. She tries to explain. “I know it may seem as though I don’t care about either of my children as anything more than tools to my own wealth but they are my pride and joy and all I want is for them to be as happy. And if you make Billy happy, then I will try to accept that, but for your sake, you must understand that this is a very different world from that which you came and that I do not find change easy.” Arsineo nods and considers before she speaks.

“If you and I are to find middle ground, then I have two conditions; you can’t try to change my personality, I am who I am, I like myself and your son likes me and; you can’t keep trying to convince me to wear dresses. You won’t succeed so you might as well not bother. In return, I will try to be a bit more ladylike. I’m not completely incapable of politeness,” Arsinoe says. Elizabeth doesn’t miss the slight lock of the young woman’s jaw before she replies.

“Anything else?” Arsinoe frowns and thinks.

“There is a sewing kit in my room. I would like material to make clothes out of, if only so I can stop borrowing your sons clothes,” Elizabeth frowns at the request.

“I thought you said you don’t sew,” Arsinoe laughs.

“I said I don’t cross stitch. It’s boring and a waste of time. But I’m somewhat talented as a seamstress.” Elizabeth nodded.

“I can do that. But I have conditions myself,” Arsinoe gestures for her to go on, “I would like to fix your haircut and if you could, don’t break my son’s heart,” she held her hand out for Arsinoe to shake and the young queen took it and shook.

When his mother had asked to borrow his straight shaving blade, he had very confusedly given to her and followed her down to the kitchen.

He was stunne to find her cutting Arsinoe’s hair with it, completely shaving the right side of her head. He stared in shock at the two. This morning that had been fighting like cats and dogs and now Arsinoe was comfortably letting his mother hold a knife to her head.

“Hey, Junior,” Arsinoe said, pulling him out of his shocked silence. He stepped forward and took her hand, “What’cha doing?” Billy kept watching his mother’s hand.

“The better question is what are you two doing and what did I miss?” His mother laughed slightly and Arsinoe squeezed his hand.

“We compromised.”

Additionally, just because there’s a ringleader doesn’t mean there can’t be someone behind the scenes as well, and for that matter, someone else in another role; in DR2, there were two monitors, and the puppetmaster (in V3′s case, it would appear Tsumugi was the gamemaster’s tool). Of course, this is information that a certain someone would know if he took the time to read over the Complete History of Hope’s Peak Academy when he had time to peruse it.

Best part is knowing that Shuichi couldn’t be faffed to verify the information about a twin. This means that you CANNOT rely on Shuichi’s perspective to tell you that a certain other twin doesn’t exist, because he doesn’t verify either!
