I have not listened to the Cub and the Caterpillar after the first and only time and I might be remembering a lot of stuff wrong but I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about the part, when Ongenagama's sister asked her why she'd chosen Mooti for her lover (since pretty much everyone assumed they were dating), Onganagama answered: "Mooti. Is a Friend."

Ongenagama's words have they stayed in my brain. Literally living rent free. The way she says 'friend' just fills my heart with sunlight and love.

The absence of the word 'just' in that sentence is so important to me and probably gave five years to my lifetime. I'm. So. Fucking. Sick Of HOW IN EVERY SHOW THEY UNDERVALUE THE IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDSHIP. BY SAYING "WE'RE JUST FRIENDS".

IM SO FUCKING SICK OF HEARING THAT PEOPLE ARE JUST FRIENDS.

That's stupid! You can be friends without the just. Friendship is not inherently a weaker love than romance. Friendships can be life changing and as or more significant than romantic relationships, yet still romance takes the higher value in media and life, cause I guess, friendships aren't as exciting as romantic relationships as a concept can be. I need more stories about friendship that don't take the bond for granted.

"Mooti. Is a FRIEND", she said, but not in the way where she would be hiding her true feelings of romantic love. She said it with absolute honesty with all her heart and she meant it with her whole soul. She knew that any partner she could have in the future, she would not have shared the same kind of experiences that she had with Mooti Qobaa.

I feel like in that moment, in that single, one-syllable word, Unati fucking succeeded to encapsulate their whole journey and everything they went through together, their deep love and understanding for each other.

Mooti, for the first time expressing disdain for the sun, and Ongenagama saying: "I'll offer some shade", while looming over the nocturnal and providing him a shadow. Ongenagama running with Mooti on her back as a cocoon during daytime. Her making progress on their journey while Mooti sleeps. So efficient.

They just get along so well. They just work together. She is hardly annoyed by his pessimistic yapping and Mooti is grateful for having someone like her and just. Protect him and be with him and experience life with him. They let each other be without any expectations of who they should be. Their dynamic just is so great cause its pretty much just Mooti being petty and making enemies, causing problems and generally being a dick while Ongenagama takes usually a backseat. Their comedic duo is just too beautiful.

The way when Mooti lost his arms after being a dick to the fish spirit and Ongenagama pleaded on her knees asking for forgiveness for herself but moreover for Mooti, like the noble fighter she is. And the spirit decided to grant Mooti fish flounders because of Ongenagamas humbleness. The fact that Mooti was supposed to be the more charismatic one but Ongenagama ended up doing a lot of the persuasive work.

AND!!!! The cutest cutest thing ever! Is the fact that when Mooti was granted his arms back, the first thing he did was hug Ongenagama. Right after he had gotten them, he rushed to celebrate with his Friend and finally had the chance to hug her and express, express his love for her. They love each other so much. They like each other so much. The fist thing he used his arms for was hugging his best friend.

THE FIRST THING HE DID AFTER GETTING ARMS WAS HUGGING HIS BEST FRIEND.

THEY LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH.

I just feel like Ongenagama and Mooti's relationship had so much unspoken mutual understanding and respect. They genuinely like and respect each other. They seek comfort in each other. They're totally different people but they understand and accommodate to each other. They chose to be with each other. They choose to be with each other.

It just feels like all of this and more were said in the word 'friend'. when Ongenagama said "Mooti. Is a friend." Like every experience they had had, that was hidden away to the outside viewer, showed itself a bit in the honesty of Ongenagama's tone and cadence. She said it with such meaning that her sister could've almost understood how much she meant by saying calling Mooti a friend. They've been so much through together.

Its like they invented a new meaning for this word, they made it feel so full of love, life, appreciation and understanding. Ongenagama and Mooti redefined friendship and the people they met who thought they were dating, couldn't understand the feeling they have for each other. People can love each other without any kind of romantic tension and attraction. they are underestimating Mooti's and Ongenagama's ability to love each other.

I feel like this post is not good. I might make edits later and so on. I cannot truly capture what I mean and what I feel.

Making my yearly pilgrimage to reread the Cop and the Cryptid (and other TF stories, your character works are just Top Tier!), I'm struck with the desire to try my hand translating. Would you be okay with me translating TCATC into Chinese? I'm not sure if I'll post it anywhere yet, but if that end up happening I'll definitely send a link your way.

Alright, I know I said He's Screwed and Not In The Fun Way would be update first, but I got smacked in the face with inspiration for TCATC.

I also, uh, accidentally deleted the chapter I had saved for HSANITFW (wow that is an awful abbreviation, I'll have to think of something else) in a way which means I can't get it back so now I have to rewrite it. But don't worry! It is coming!

(i do not at all mean this in a snarky or sarcastic way)

talking about myself to myself.

i notice that laboring over a piece of writing until i feel like each word is perfect gets about the same amount of response as something i write in a couple of days then post without laboring too much.

so maybe i'm being a try hard?

i could perhaps just write, edit once, and make my peace with it.

there's not really a need to read a chapter like 10x to make sure it's "good enough" (whatever that means).

because the people who will like and respond seem to enjoy it either way?

like, when i was writing "wait for it," I spent about 6 hours a day for 5 days making it just perfect. I was sick and home from work. Hours and hours of revising and rethinking, getting feedback, adjusting plot points and characters.

Then with the latest chapter of the cop and the criminal, I spent like 6 hours total on it? and it got the same amount and intensity of responses.

i mean, i see a HUGE difference in the writing style between the two stories, but maybe that's because i'm too close to it?

but tcatc is supposed to be just kind of fun and a bit less-angst, and more 'fate makes fools of us all.' and it's totally puply and not supposed to be steeped in realism like 'wait for it' (or even 'scars and stitches') was.

i think my main goals now are

keep them in character

make the action easy to follow

make the emotional stakes clear and simple.

in the end, everyone gets what they want, including me.

so diction, flow, artistry matter less in this story, i think. i just want to tell the story simply.

i’d love to hear about harry’s upbringing in the changer and the changed. what was high school and uni harry like? was she ever with women then, or was she always too afraid (not really the right word, sorry) about her family’s thoughts, finding out, etc.?

OK THIS ASK IS A MONTH OLD, I’M SO SORRY

I saw it and wanted to take time with it and then forgot to answer it and then...I worried it was too late as more time passed? But with the ask I just got today I decided to go back and answer this one too. I’ll put it behind a cut in case I ramble. 

Before I do, here’s a link to my BB fic, The Changer and the Changed. If you haven’t read it, I promise it’s worth it. (I know I’m biased but...it’s true). 

OK, so Harry kissed her best friend Carol when they were young-- around age 11 or so --as “practice.” It was Carol’s idea, Harry very much one of the girls who “just didn’t get it” when all her friends got excited about boys and kissing and dating. It was awkward and somehow both too wet and too dry at once, but it also made Harry feel a weird twist in her stomach almost like nervous butterflies, and when they pulled apart and Carol wrinkled her nose and said it wasn’t good Harry agreed quickly and tamped down anything that was starting to rise up. (Carol, incidentally, would marry right out of high school and have three kids and only kiss other women twice more, both times when she was very drunk and could say she didn’t remember it happening even though she very much did). 

High school Harry was a Good Girl. She read a lot and went along with how her mother wanted her to dress, and that made it easier for her to escape a lot of awkward dates that she didn’t really want to go on. She did end up on a few, though. It was easy enough to get out of a lot of physical stuff with boys, but she did do some kissing just to see what it was like. It always felt like she was watching a film of someone else kissing a boy when she would do it, though, and that was uncomfortable and strange, so she didn’t do much more than that. 

She had huge crushes on girls, but never acknowledged them as such. She was bookish and nerdy and always writing or reading, always ready to gush about her favorite poet or female writer, and when she found girls like her it was a lot like Anne Shirley meeting Diana Barry. Kindred spirits, bosom friends, etc. She didn’t think about the girls she loved sexually so much as deeply romantically, though. 

At least not until college. She didn’t meet her roommate Bobbi until her sophomore year, after having spent her first year at Bryn Mawr being the same quiet bookworm she had been in high school. Bobbi being assigned as her roommate that second year made all the difference. She was short, with a smart bob haircut and just a little makeup but not too much (when they met at least-- as they got older and she got deeper into feminism she stopped wearing makeup). She wore whatever she wanted, including going braless in spite of having pretty big boobs, and she figured out that Harry was gay before Harry did (in part because yes, Harry sometimes spaced out while looking at Bobbi’s bobbies, and honestly she couldn’t help but feel tenderness because that’s some BIG LESBIAN ENERGY). 

When Harry finally realized (midway through her junior year), Bobbi pulled her into a hug and said in her rather thick Long Island accent “it took ya long enough.” But Harry was scared to even tell Bobbi about her feelings. It was terrifying to her when she woke up from sex dreams about women or when she tried dating men and felt a disgusted when they’d move in to kiss her. But she knew she could trust Bobbi, and she wasn’t wrong. 

She tried to find out how to date women, but it scared her, frankly. Bobbi seemed to know who was a lesbian just by looking at them, but Harry felt like she couldn’t trust herself. And the last thing she wanted was to make another woman uncomfortable or put herself in a position where the wrong person might know about her sexuality. She did meet one woman who she very much wanted to kiss and who was gay, and she mooned after her for a full two weeks before approaching her at a party and asking if she might want to kiss. The woman’s refusal was gentle but still left a bruise on Harry’s heart, and she didn’t really take the same kind of risk again. 

What made her feel safe with Louis was the way that Louis seemed to meet every action that Harry took with her own. The difference was palpable. And the confidence that having her love returned gave her is what eventually helped Harry be able to embrace herself and stop questioning whether or not she could be okay as a lesbian. 

Hopefully you’re still around, nonny, and enjoy this insight into younger Harry.

Missing Besz dumplings

Borlu/Dhatt snippet - A birthday present for @me-fish. 

“I still think you’re a total asshole” said Dhatt.

Borlu shrugged and lit a cigarette, which he had always found was a good move when playing for time. Dhatt watched the smoke trail into her face with a frozen half-smile.

“Well” said Borlu calmly “you gave up your evening to eat Besz dumplings with this asshole, so you must find something in my company.”

“Your food is so bland.”

“Yours is too spicy.”

“And you eat too much of it, tubby. You should take my advice; it would help you drop a few pounds.” She cut up another dumpling and started chewing ruminatively.

Borlu looked at her, thoughtfully. There was a remarkable difference when she let her hair down. He wondered what it took every day to impress the hard-faced fascists if the Militsya. She must have been either incurably hard-headed or in love with police work to dedicate herself to the job so totally. Now, casual and relaxed in a loose green jumper, there was a playfulness about her that she had only shown with Yallya. He wondered what had happened there. But it was too early to ask.

“What do you find in my company?” he asked curiously.

She pushed a strand of hair out of her face and smirked slightly. “You’re a detective, according to your file anyway. You work it out, tubby.” She finished the last dumpling and glanced at the kitchen. “Hey, are there any more of these?”

“I thought that was the way to get fat?” he grinned.

“Well, maybe now and again won’t hurt…and I’d be in good company. Tubby.”

@residesatshamecentral  You really got me thinking; how would a poly-situation work between Borlú, Corwi and Dhatt? You know, pre-Breach.

Corwi & Borlú are already attached at the hip, but I don’t see why Borlú would object to occasionally having two women in his bed (book-Borlú, at least. He had quite meaningful relationships with both of his ‘girlfriends’). Corwi seems laid-back in an everything-goes kind of way, I don’t see her objecting terribly either.

But Dhatt is a mystery to me… Her participating might be an occasional thing? And would her wife Yallya be ok with this?? (but she did seem like an adventurous person...)
