3/28/24.
I don't know if there is some algorithm at work, but Bandcamp on shuffle has been increasingly playing music I bought pre-blog. While mentioned in a post about fellow Melted Ice Cream band The Winebox Inquiry, '83 Girls (Christchurch, New Zealand) have never been mentioned.
Amazing considering I love Joe Sampson's work as a musician. He's been in '83 Girls, T54, Local Tourist and Salad Boys (among others). He is the mogul behind Melted Ice Cream. And while Melted Ice Cream isn't nearly as prolific as it was in its early days, it still puts out great music.
'83 Girls sound like you'd expect a Joe Sampson band to sound like.

What does tankie mean?
On October 27th 1956, Peter Fryer, a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, and correspondent for its paper the Weekly Worker, arrived in Hungary. This was four days into an uprising of workers calling for worker controlled socialism. Factories had been taken over nationally by workers councils, in a demonstration of workers self-organisation that was unprecedented at the time, and the first strike on its scale in an Eastern-bloc country. On the 4th of November, Russian T54 tanks rolled into Budapest to suppress the uprising. Street fighting continued until the 10th November, although the workers councils held out for two months.
Fryer returned to the UK horrified by the Soviet repression he had seen, but his attempt to write about it for the Daily Worker was suppressed - the editors were sticking to the official USSR line that the entire uprising was a fascist counter-revolutionary plot and refused to publish anything contradicting that narrative. When Fryer wrote up his experiences anyway, he was expelled from the CPGB. Hungary 1956 split Communist parties across the world; many who had supported the USSR up until this point became disillusioned and split or left individually, while those who stayed loyal to the USSR earned the epithet 'tankies'.
After 1956, the USSR was to invade Czechoslovakia in 1968, then Afghanistan in 1979.
feels like people have started to pick up the term without knowledge of what it means and where it comes from. the linked article is set up like a FAQ, if you need to get more in the weeds with it, but above is the most relevant portion.

Paralympics Day 3 Recap
Day 3
Watched:
I attempted to watch some sitting volleyball, but of course the US is only showing the US women. So to be able to watch any of the men’s tournament I needed a vpn to watch the video provided on YouTube. It has no sound for some reason, but my vpn/YouTube was also being a brat so it kept freezing after 30 seconds. So ended up having to give up on that. /rant
Ended up watching the evening session of track and field which did not disappoint. The men’s T63 long jump saw the world record broken multiple times. By two competitors.
The men’s 5000m T54 saw a thrilling end to the race.
And the throwing events were also fun, what I could see at least because it was an integrated feed, which means only seeing a few throws here and there between races.
I then went back and watched Wheelchair rugby. It’s also less stressful to watch when you know the outcome. We have USA/GB in one semi final now and AUS/JPN in the other. I look forward to watching them on Sunday.
I really need to go and watch more goalball, I’ve gotten behind.
We finish the day with 10 new countries on the medal table, 57 countries overall. The US got a few more golds today to leap frog into the top 5 in the medal table. China continues to blow everyone else out of the water with 24 golds. And host France is at 7 with 5 golds.

I know this is some flavor of T-54 or T-55 being used on the front line in Ukraine, but can you ID exactly what model it is?
That is most definitely a T-54, which is absolutely wild to me. While I'd heard that T54s were still in use in limited numbers, I never thought I'd see one on a modern battlefield. However, as far as identifying a specific model goes, the T54/55 has been through so many upgrades and refits over the years that pretty much every remaining tank is unique, so that's gonna be a negative on a specific model. (However the double cope cage is funny as fuck.)
85% (unsure of variant)

Cinder, half awake: Darling, would you still love me if I were a tank?
Winter, equally half awake: Well, it depends on what kind of tank you were. You could be an Atlesian Leopard 2A7, a Vacuo Chieftain, a T54-
Cinder: Pah, the first one then
Winter, very seriously: If you were a Leopard? I would ask you to marry me
Cinder, flustered: Really?? D-does that mean you want to marry me?
Winter: Are you a Leopard?
Cinder: …

A Tale as old as time ( Start of arc)
August 31, 2043, Hinata- Nanami residence
?: Alright we are going live in 3, 2, 1! Roll it!.
Agent Murphy: So Hinata, I'm going to ask you a few questions, is that okay with you? You could take some time a bit before you answer.
Uh... No that's fine! Really. Just tell me what you want to tell me.
Agent Murphy: You're an easy guy to talk to, I like that. But anyway, let's get to the point. Hinata..., looking back on your activities during the early 2010s and looking at yourself now, what would you tell your son about what you did then?
Flashback sequence
*Soviet troops cross into Manchuria on August 9th. They reach the city of Harbin on August 21st. Crowds of liberated Chinese citizens cheer and congratulate their arrival in the city*.
*Representatives from both the United States and the Soviet Union sign the agreement on August 26, 1946. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur of the United States and Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko of the Soviet Army signed the treaty along with the Japanese foreign minister Mamoru Shigemitsu. Macarthur and Emperor Hirohito take one for the cameras. The division areas are finalized*.
*Soviet T54 tanks march and open fire on student protesters and other rioters, first in Hungary in 1956 and in Prague in 1968. Several people were killed in both riots and thousands more were injured. A savage response, this would be a tactic that would be repeated again in the 1980s*.
"Those are not riots, but rebellions. People rebel because of oppression and conditions. Conditions that make it impossible to live, no matter if things get good or not. People are tired of this and when they get tired, they rebel. No rebellion is born out of violence, it's born out of the conditions" US Secretary of State Dean Rusk, December 1961.
*R12 MRBM missiles being shown at a red square parade. These missiles were used in the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962,, the closest humanity has come to extinction. An American P2 Neptune patrol airplane shadows a Soviet cargo freighter carrying il 28 beagle bombers. Sh 3 sea kings fly over Key West, Florida. The Soviet submarine B 59 is being observed by a Seabat ( Variant of the Choctaw helicopter) off the coast of Cuba*.
"Una Revolución!" Fidel Castro, 1960.
*Communist guerillas raise their guns as a show of strength against the Sandinista government in Grenada sponsored by the United States. Meanwhile, Dutch protesters in Amsterdam march to protest the installment of more Minuteman missiles in Europe. US President Ronald Reagan sits with Margaret Thatcher at Camp David, Maryland in December 1984. Reagan and Thatcher would be vocal opponents of Communism*
*President George H. W. Bush Meets with several of his advisors in 1992 to discuss the growing issues in the Middle East and Asia, more specifically Japan. President Bill Clinton signs a peace treaty between Israel and Jordan, much to the ire of Egypt. US Ambassador George W. Bush meets with Soviet Ambassador to the United Nations Vladimir Putin in Shanghai*.
"I believe that Communism is the new vanguard of the world, a Spread of freedom. A new world with freedom away from the capitalist oppressors and the corrupt. A new Japan for all Japanese Citizens, be they old or very young, even if it has to be fought with the sword and spear" Yuki Tateyama, General Secretary of the Communist party of Japan, November 2009
tape recording stops*
Cuts to the US Senate building and President John Mcain takes the stand. Mcain stands in front of Congress, facing a crowd of Republicans and Democrats
John Mcain: Global Communism, Marxism, Leninism, and the rest are THE single greatest to not only our National Security but to the security of the Free world. Worse than the Ku Klux Klan, worse than any hurricane, even worse than the Narco drug dealers and Mafia!. They have almost half of the Third World underneath their Iron Curtain! And no nation, I believe is more to blame for the spread than North Japan! Because of their support, half of the developing nations are socialist in nature and are allied with the Russians. Democracy is at stake! So I ask you all here, Republicans and Democrats, to put aside the grudges and work together in times that truly try men's souls.
end of flashback
Well... Let's just say that it wasn't really easy. I don't really think anyone can claim the fact that they just ended an era of conflict that went on for a century.
I didn't really expect to be a hero or a legend in my home country. I was just a person who wanted to be special, to feel like I was someone, to have a talent in something. I'm sure many of us can relate to having that feeling. That's why I signed up for Hope's Peak, despite the issues going on.
But... I honestly let that judgment get to me a bit. I didn't know what I was getting into, what I was about to see, what I was about to face, I had no idea how exactly bad things were over there. I suppose that maybe... my son does have a right to know what his dad did during that time, so he can try to learn and not be like me, to live a good and special life that my younger self wished he had.
So I will tell you because this has to be told, to let those know that things like this can never happen again. I just hope that the rest of the world is more calmer now and more safe than it was back then. So buckle up, this is going to get wild. It all started a few months ago...

I've had the Dwaal Troupe tab open on my computer for over two weeks. People I follow on Bandcamp had bought it, and it's on Ally Records (North Carolina) - so it was only a matter of time before I posted about it.
"Lucky Dog" was released digitally by Dwaal Troupe (Chicago...same city as Horsegirl) in 2021. It reminds me of Guided By Voices and Sebadoh crossed with New Zealand pop (think Sneaky Feelings). I'm not surprised that Ally Records is releasing this considering their affinity for New Zealand (Cake Kitchen and T54).

How do you know Russia is losing? Excellent Ukrainian operational security has mostly blacked out news for the front.
> (From Randy Mott @randymot4 , Twitter) <
1. Russians are asking for a ceasefire. Russia desperately wants to freeze the battlefield;
2. They are sending less trained soldiers into battle in large numbers;
3. Most conscripts sent in now are equipped with ancient Russian helmets and very old weapons and nothing else. They often seem to have been drafted only weeks before their capture (no training).
4. Russians, boasting of making hundreds of T90M tanks, seem only able to send anvient T54s into UKR now. Every day the Ukrainian military grows more modern than the Russians;
5. Russia has stripped its other borders of military personnel and equipment;
6. The refugee flow to Poland, where I live, is almost nothing now. I drive right by their embassy every week, where there were big lines in the early months of the war. Many Ukrainians actually going home now.
7. Russian military bloggers are not making the rosy reports like the Kremlin post. They also totally contradict the Russian trolls on Twitter.
8. The Russian economy is tanking.
9. We do not see many new videos or photos on Twitter from pro-Russian sources depicting great tactical victories. The isolated instances have been re-posted hundreds of times.
10. Dozens of Russian units and their families back home are posting videos asking for help due to their lack of support on the front and the "suicide" missions that gthey are asked to perform.
None of these indicators reflect any chance that Russia is winning or that the war is even a "stalematge" right now. Confirmation will be forthcoming as major Ukrainians victories are very close now.
