Waaay back in 2nd grade my teacher had us write a book called "My Pet Dinosaur", describing what we would do if we could have any dinosaur as a pet. This being the early 90s and having freshly watched Jurassic Park, I decided to skip the T rexes and sauropods, wanting something that would fit in my house and wouldn't eat me. So, I got out my trusty 1987 "Dinosaurs!" Childcraft Annual to pick something more practical, and decided on Psittacosaurus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ the illustration in the 1987 book, versus this recent, much more accurate depiction by Bob Nicholls.
So, three decades later, I found the ever-talented @bookrat and their incredible paleo taxidermy art blog. I knew I wanted to commission them, so I decided to fulfill a childhood dream at the same time! I chose a model of a psittacosaurus hatchling because the 14 inch hatchling would take up far less space than a 4 foot long adult, and actually be in my budget. I asked for a green color because of the 1987 illustration above, but more accurate and less mock turtle, lol.
it came out gorgeous! I have my new "pet" here posing adorably with two of my actual-factual pets. Thank you again @bookrat for your beautiful work! I'll have to get a collar soon to take more pics :)
EDIT: This is blowing up, so make you're liking and reblogging @bookrat 's post too, and check out all their other art and dino models!

I mostly use my art accounts to share my paintings and drawings, but I also love just creating things, especially mixed media sculpture/models. This is a reliquary that I made as an homage to a favorite dinosaur: the Oviraptor, a theropod whose name translates to "egg robber".
First discovered in the Gobi Desert, sprawled over a clutch of eggs, the fossil was initially interpreted as a snapshot of ruthless reptilian hunger. The species quickly became solidified in popular imagination as a cowardly murderer of innocence—a monster, in comparison to 'noble' predators like the T-Rex. It wasn’t until years later that the ancient tableau would be reassessed. Tucked inside the box is a quotation from Nature:
"…the time of the original discovery in 1923, the eggs were thought to belong to Protoceratops andrewsi, the most common dinosaur in those deposits. This led to the eponymous suggestion that Oviraptor died while scavenging the eggs. The recent discovery of an oviraptorid embryo within the type of eggs associated with the Oviraptor philoceratops holotype suggests instead that the individual's proximity to the nest was related to parenting rather than to predation."
My soft-sculpture, feather, rabbit fur, and polymer clay oviraptor is nestled with her eggs and hatchlings inside of a 9" long handmade box, collaged on the outside with florals taken from vintage Mother's Day cards and a collection of illustrations and text showing the conventional, disparaging concept of the species. Other materials used in the piece include acrylic paint, sand, plastic label tape, and chicken bones and eggshells.

Jurassic World AU Reader who keeps hiding all over the island, when they once escaped the labs. They just kept hiding in the worst possible places, such as swamps or cliffs or ruins, and the platonic yans freaked out when their little hatchling or herdmate or packmate left them. The scientists go panicked, each one warning the island to not kill Reader, but don't let them near any humans...
If any humans harmed Reader, the raptors/Indominus/Indoraptor/T. Rex/Carnataurus/etc. platonic yans are hunting them on sight. NO ONE messes with Reader, least of all greedy humans who can't respect nature or hatchlings. The herbivore platonic yans stomp any on sight.
Reader is their little guy, okay? So everyone needs to leave them alone and let them be themself, otherwise there's gonna be a problem...
(The scientists take to keeping one of the adults around Reader, especially since it keeps the adults from eating them...)

Happy Dinosaur December!
This is a Nanuqsaurus! It's my favorite dinosaur for no other reason than fluffy t-rex :D
I like to imagine that their hatchlings were fluffy like seal pups! My evidence? Because it's cute.
I drew this in October because I was so ready
Kinda forgot to post it lmao

I’m having an absolute blast mentally creating (and starting to write) my Jurassic World Dinbo au.
It’s set basically after Dominion- the world has had to evolve to living with dinos in the wild. However this obviously comes with humans abusing their power over them. That’s where Din and his super sexy dino crew come in who run a dino rehab/rescue centre.
Raptor Squad:
Razor. A silver/grey Atrociraptor with black ticks along her scales. She has her fair share of scars mostly from pacing the cage of where she was rescued from. She’s the oldest and therefore the beta of the group.
Naboo. A Pyroraptor with silver feathers. She’s the youngest and was rescued by Din when she was barely a hatchling. She’s the speediest of the group.
Gauntlet. A light grey Velociraptor with blue streaks.
Fire spray. A Velociraptor who sports a green base, red streaks and the odd yellow spot.
Naboo and Razor were rescued from the same place along with a Triceratops named Crest, who also has a silver hide. The collector boasted about his collection of silver dinos until their condition was discovered and they were eventually rescued. Naboo and Razor have a grandchild to grandmother relationship, Razor gets annoyed at Boo’s energy but makes sure she gets her share during feeding time.
Gauntlet and Firespray were wild raptors who got caught in traps, so their pack was forced to leave them behind. Very untrusting of Din to begin with but Razor and Naboo helped show them he’s not one of those cruel humans, he’s a good one.
Size large to small goes- Razor, Firespray, Gauntlet, Naboo.
Herbivores:
Crest. A silver Triceratops who is very old, very grumpy, and has always lived alone so can’t handle a herd environment.
Betty, Bella, Beatrice. Three Ankylosaurus rescued from an auction. Created by me just to flesh the park out.
Others:
Krayt. The T-Rex (sandy/tan in colour) who Cobb is in charge of looking after. Found in the desert lost and confused she was taken in to be cared for and eventually released, but refused to be released so spends her days being waited on by Cobb. She’s showing signs of arthritis in her knees so it takes her a bit longer to get up in the mornings.
Mythasaurus Rex. A genetic hybrid designed for no purpose other than “can we actually do this”. I can’t say any more as her presence heavily effects the plot
I’ve been watching a lot of Monkey World whilst I’ve been sick so let’s blame that for this.

As a kid - a KID - I was aware of this beef, and the thing is they're really, really respected.
Horner was responsible for showing the world that dinosaurs weren't some brute lizards, rather he found ample evidence that some dinosaurs - Maiasaura specifically - built dirt mound "nests" for their eggs and clearly cared for their unborn, postulating that they then helped raise them and guarded them from danger until they were old enough to fend for themselves. Here's his reconstructed cast of a Maiasaura hatchling:
Tumblr media
Bakker was responsible for popularizing the modern idea that dinosaurs weren't slow, cold-blooded creatures, but warm-blooded, lively creatures, capable of just as much activity as we might expect from the Serengeti. In fact, it was Bakker's revolutionary illustration of a Deinonychus (a larger version of a Velociraptor) that stirred the warm-blooded, active debate all over again:
Tumblr media
Even in interviews you can see a difference in personality. Horner is a mild-mannered, calm, rational seeming person, taking the time to explain what he's discovered, what his theses are, what his discoveries have meant for the world of paleontology at large. Bakker, on the other hand, is an active, animated man, explaining the world of dinosaurs, how they had to compete, how the illustration above is demonstrative of the dinosaur world at large.
They're both key figures in paleontology, and the fact that they disagree so fundamentally on some aspects is hilarious to me, especially since they've both been arguing for us to reconsider how we view dinosaurs in very profound ways, such that their views are probably commonplace for most people now. And yet, they're probably just going to die as bitter old biddies.
For what it's worth, I think that T. rex was like most carnivores: likely a hunter who would settle for scavenging if necessary, or if something just seemed too particularly good to pass up, like that opening scene on Apple TV+ 'Prehistoric Planet' with the T. rex dad swimming to a good cadaver with his offspring:
Tumblr media
Anyway, I just spent half my lunch doing this because I loved dinosaurs so much when I was a kid and it just sparked so many memories.
Sometimes I remember that there’s a massive beef in the paleontological community between Jack Horner and Robert Bakker and it’s so big that when they both worked as advisers on the Jurassic Park films, Spielberg made 2 characters based on them and had a T. rex eat Bakker’s character as a favour to Horner.

DRAGON ISLAND BLUE REVIEW: DRAGONS
Tumblr media
Starting off with the starters, you're given the choice between 4 little dragon hatchlings. I will be grouping them together since there is very little difference between them.
Evolutions and rest of review under the cut.
DRAGONLING
Tumblr media
Your hatchlings grow into dragonlings, which are pleasantly bird-y, with wings too small to possibly get off the ground.
I like that their back legs are much larger than their forelimbs, I imagine they can walk bipedally but switch to all fours if needed, like an ornithopod dinosaur.
DRAGON
Tumblr media
Now official dragons, it seems that either they lost their forelimbs in favor of their originally tiny wings, or the forelimbs became wings, like a bat. Or did they fuse? Either way they are perfectly acceptable dragons.
WYRM
Tumblr media
And finally we have the wyrms. The art does a good job of conveying how huge they must be, being much more heavyset than previous forms.
Looks like forelimbs are back again, with wings closer to a bird's than bat. No use in making sense of it.
I didn't notice until now that the air and earth wyrms have noticeably different skulls than fire and water... They remind me of Giganotosaurus, while fire and water are closer to T. rex. I like their color schemes and larger horns a bit better too.
Overall solid dragon starters, no complaints really. 4.5/5

Just woke up from a dream in which my father in law informed me I had to get rid of my pet T-Rex, which was devastating because I raised her from a hatchling that just happened to be the Lego T Rex my partner got in 2020. He kept using the wrong pronouns for her and insisting we had discussed this previously but in my dream it totally came out of left field.
