Trivia: Created by Bushnell and Dabney in partnership as Syzygy Engineering (before incorporating as Atari), and intended as a coin-operated version of the PDP-1 game Spacewar!, the futuristic looking Computer Space was the first ever arcade video game as well as the first commercially available video game.

“You have nothing to fear here,” Chroma-Admiral Rafriit says, curling his arms in a gesture Taox takes to be reassurance. “Even if these Deep-blighted find a ship, only a fraction of them can leave the planet. You are safe from their hunt, and they will be swept away. This I vow.” He wields authority with grace and ease, and Taox cannot help but look at him with bitter envy for it.

There is much to envy about the Ammonite. Their moon glitters with ships coming and going, resonates with the deep hum of distant engines, greater than any she could have dreamt up. It is barely a day since the final ships capable of flight were destroyed on her orders, and the thought of what could have been if – if not for the king’s madness, if not for the court’s withering, if not for the worms, if, if, if – it bleeds like an open wound.

Anyone left on the Fundament is twice doomed, once by the syzygy and once by her hand.

She will bear this weight for every long year of her life, though now she doubts she will live much longer at all, whatever Rafriit’s assurances, or the Ammonite’s faith in the knowledge the strange, weightless moon overhead has granted them. (Taox knows moons, knows tides, as any engineer who has dealt with the Fundament’s waves knows them, and it is difficult to trust something so vast, with so little presence.)

“I hope that you are right, Chroma-Admiral,” she says, as graciously as she can manage. He abandons her after that for more pressing duties than the care of a single krill.

Perhaps it is insight, granted after long years of struggle, that has her ask for a ship long before the Leviathan breaches out of the Fundament, and its hunters – she glimpses them from orbit, uncoiling from the planet with sinuous and hungry grace – follow.

But Taox rather thinks it is fear.

oh i would love to hear about syzygy and jj 👀👀👀👀 and in case you’re like me and want to talk about OCs but don’t know where to start, i’ll ask a more specific question: what are they to each other, how did they meet and what’s their relationship?

so syzygy's real name is elena, syzygy is her superhero name. she and jj are half siblings! elena is 17, jj is 27, and they hadn't met and barely knew about each other until their mom died. jj came to the funeral and instead of having to worry about the logistics of elena being a minor w/out a guardian, he stepped in to fill that spot for the year. elena is working on senior year of high school...part 2. she ended up having to repeat senior year bc she was the sole caretaker for her mom in her final year, which meant her grades fell completely by the wayside. she skipped a year of school when she was younger but then repeated the last one so she might as well have not skipped. oh well

jj is...trying his best! he's trying to be a good brother and he's doing pretty well at it, but it's hard to find work and elena is looking at colleges and money is hard and he doesnt necessarily have a stable career, he does a lot of odd jobs and free-lancing but. listen. villain henchman gigs pay pretty well... he'll just do a couple here and there. nothing serious. no one has to know

elena is really into physics and engineering and she's been interning at a research lab that's working on developing hardlight tech. [at an unspecified point with an unspecified driving motivation] she steals the tech and incorporates it into a suit, giving her the ability to form hardlight platform projections she can use to. well not fly. but run across in the sky, so it's kinda flying if you squint! and also she can form it into weapons (which she's not very good at) and use it as a shield. she's still ironing out the kinks on using more than one of those at once. eventually the head researcher at the lab makes the connection between elena and the newly debuted syzygy using their tech and confronts elena. they end up teaming up for a bit, the researcher helping to really refine things and train elena

but also uh-oh, the researcher is a minor villain working under a (so far undiscovered) mastermind villain and steals the suit just as elena realizes this. elena is left powerless to stop things just as she's realized the scope of the plot & also gotten used to being able to DO something. insert more contrivances i havent ironed out yet where the only way to stop the researcher involves melding with the hardlight tech itself as opposed to interfacing w/ it through a suit and she loses that defined line between elena and syzygy, which is not something she would have agreed to do if you had asked her before things got dire

and of course there's also a confrontation that happens somewhere in all that mess where some henchman have an injured syzygy backed into a corner but then syzygy looks up and there's jj, and he realizes it's her as they lock eyes, and he throws the fight so she can escape safely but it's quite a blow for syzygy who didn't need more trust issues

anyway that's the basic gist of those 2, there's also multiple more heroes in this verse (including twins sophie & hardy ware, aka software and hardware, who are very diy hacker (for soph) and gadgetry (for hardy). they are horrible teenagers with a main motivation of creating chaos and i love them) but also a lot of them belong to my roommate martin and idk all of their details. i need to sit down and actually Create Tangible Things to point to for this verse bc it's captivated me for like a year now but. as im sure u realized reading this word vomit, it's not at all fully developed yet. but i love them anyways

If someone thinks in those terms and at the risk of sounding crude: i’d like to say that their greatest sin is that they haven’t been conscientiously pounded into a psuedo-Kundalini awakening enough, as to reverse engineer any residual religious indoctrination. The Rise of Mystical Syzygy

Mystical Syzygy a rock star on the come up. When looking at Mystical Syzygy you can definitely see them as a pop, rock type of person from the hot pink stars to her incredible makeup routine. Mystical Syzygy definity holds her self to her inner rock star. On the outside it’s not hard to determine that Mystical Syzygy as a growing rock star.

Mystical Syzygy (Vanessa) is a coworker of mine and I asked her some questions so I could learn about the life, feel, and thought process of a “musician in practice” or a “creative”. Growing up with music Mystical Syzygy has always had a love for it with playing the drums as a kid to singing her heart out attempting to hit those Mariah Carey high notes she always had love for music. But it wasn’t until 2020 that she took music more seriously. With the pandemic shattering souls and bringing people down Vanessa took the hurt and the grief of her loved one and drew back to music. She needed a creative outlet to release emotion and with her prior love for music this was perfect.

She began using this outlet by playing the ukulele; she then moved to guitar and then conquered the keyboard. Once the pandemic cleared up a bit in 2021 Vanessa started working for a musician who exposed her to public singing and taught her the ins and outs of the industry. Public singing was a bit challenging at first due to the fact that she thought it was terrifying as a kid, but working as a waitress and doing smaller gigs has helped Vanessa get over that terrifying feeling. As an adult she says that the people go there to listen to you so it doesn’t even matter. With all the lights in your face all these people just turn into a couple of bodies in the distance. She told me this funny story about this one time she was doing sound check for a band and they were like say something so she instantly says “something” now with the crowd hearing her they became engaged with her on stage (AWKARDDDD) since she was just doing sound check she had to say a few things so that they can check, so she decided to say the ABC’s but backwards every one was fascinated and she stopped mid way and was like “whatttt”? You’ve  never heard the ABC’s backwards”? Then continued. 

The band she was sound checking for soon asked her to join them, which was a fun experience at first but like all good things they had to come to an end. “The thing about creatives is they are sometimes the hardest people to deal with at times,” Vanessa explained. She played rhythm guitar for the band, she liked it because it is very consistent. She had a lot of fun in the “jam sessions” but, working in a band with a lot of creatives caused some major issues especially due to the fact that a band is a business and you have to treat it like such at times. She threw around the term “creatives” quite often and as a person with little to no music knowledge I had to ask what these creative people are like. I know the term as describing something but she used the term as their own people. She defined “creative” as “Someone engulfed in the madness of their mind as they find tools to express themselves in ways that feel authentic & unique. Sometimes, a psychopath cus it feels like you have to be one but that’s okay. They are also people who have an endless hunger to express themselves”. With herself included she is a fellow creative and she is just getting started. Although the band scene wasn’t for her it was definitely an experience she needed to continue her path. In the future she would prefer solo’s or collabs but the band scene isn’t her favorite.

With no straight direction she knows some avenues she wants to take. Right now she has a rock indie vibe going for herself but down the line she wants to make Tracey-darkwave club music eventually or instrumentals for poetry wherever the wind takes her I guess. She is also studying to do DJ work or engineer to find her own sounds. Or maybe she’ll branch more off into her singing career. Mystical Syzygy told me that there is a difference between what you like to listen to vs what you're capable of doing. She explains that she loves the “expression of words” and how “the voice is an instrument itself and it is so impactful” due to all her yelling and screaming from her “emo” phase has shifted her voice. She later explains how she doesn’t know what the future has in store for her and she doesn’t take it to seriously she just has fun with that being said she stated “maybe that is just the rockstar mentality”.

Mystical Syzygy is inspired by Brakence & Tamino along with Cat Clyde, Amy Lee, & Lorde. The music industry could be pretty challenging and can take people through different things but the crazy adventures each artist goes through on their own to develop themselves. I believe it is extremely important for these “creatives” to have these experiences that will shape their music. Now I am far from a musician but I truey admire the dedication and work that these musicians put into their music and its truly a wonderful thing.

Pong wasn’t even the first arcade video game.  That’d be Computer Space (which was basically Spacewar! as an arcade game, minus the star in the middle that drew the ships in) in 1971, created by Atari’s predecessor Syzygy Engineering.

The Galaxy Game (also based on Spacewar!) was launched as a prototype slightly before that, but was never put into production due to its hardware being more expensive.

Local game design enthusiast irrationally angry that people still commonly think of Pong as the first videogame when, for instance, Spacewar was created in 1962, ten years before Pong, and its free sourcecode was widely distributed among the programming communities of that time. It was extremely influential and important to the beginnings of videogames as an entertainment medium, but is almost always overlooked.

Holding up Pong as "the first videogame" while that was merely one of the first prominent commercially released games implies that videogames are only worth historical recognition if they are not only commercially released, but commercially successful.
