Ingmar Bergman - Wild Strawberries (Smultronstället) (1957) The second film by Bergman in 1957, after the Seventh Seal, and the second masterpiece of that year as well. Again Bergman explores questions of mortality, not so much the silence of god in this one but again how to face death. It's also the second film in a row where wild strawberries play a part as symbols of innocence and youth... The main character here is an old man, played by Phantom Carriage director Victor Sjöström, who decides to drive his car from Stockholm to Lund (some 600 km, I checked) with his daughter-in-law to get his honorary degree from the university as a celebration of his 50th anniversary as a doctor. As he takes this trip we get what is basically a roadtrip film, he picks up hitchhikers, reminisces on life and learns a lot about himself and those that surround him. It is basically a journey of redemption for a man who was probably too rigid in life and who learns to let go a bit. This is again a beautiful film, with superlative acting and a deep, bittersweet message. Again it is all these things being also constantly entertaining, jumping from flashbacks to dreams to real-life, with plenty of humor and reminiscences on life and death. The film focuses on three generations, one of the young hitchikers, that of the Doctor's son and daughter-in-law and that of the Doctor. In the end there is something that each learns with the others, and the Doctor who starts the film terrorized by the idea of dying ends the film with a smile of acceptance. Ingmar Bergman - The Seventh Seal (1957) A film which has kind of become shorthand for "european art film" and that has actually damaged its reputation as the supremely entertaining, often funny and never boring work of art that it is. It's one of the first Bergman films to explicitly explore what would be a throughline in his filmography, the idea of the "silence of god", that if god does indeed exist he is completely silent when faced with human suffering, and faith is about dealing with that. The story tells of a crusader coming back from the crusades and facing death in Europe as the plague stalks the land. In order to delay death he engages it in a chess game, the knight isn't exactly afraid of dying as much as in need of knowledge about god in order to be able to die peacefully. On his voyage the knight meets several other people, many contemptible but some worthy people, these worthy people are represented as a family of three, two theatre players and their infant son who provide him with hospitality, wild strawberries and milk which make him forget the evils of the world and the absence of god for a moment. This leads to a decision that dooms him but also ultimately saves him, when he finds something worth dying for. A beautiful film played through connected vignettes where death plays a major part, often absurd as when death is sawing down a tree to kill a guy who is trying to run away from it, and often deeply thoughtful. Death isn't evil here, it's just an inexorable fact, the complication comes from how each character deals with death. In the end, as death comes for a group of characters we can see how each accepts it differently, some yearn for it, some refuse to accept it and some are resigned to it. A classic that is a classic for good reasons and which really needs to be seen for everyone, as a piece of cinema, philosophy and just damn entertaining stuff. Also, Max von Sydow is love.
