L.I.E.S. label Collection X (2018)

Ron Morelli’s label is currently one of the leading labels of cutting-edge techno, dance, and experimental sounds. We discovered and broadcast him as an artist thanks to Hospital Productions. Through Morelli’s label we found a lot of good moments over the years through tracks from Steve Moore, Samantha Vacation, Svengalisghost, Tzusing, NGLY, Nick Klein, the Music For Shut Ins and No Payments Rejected compilations (2013 and 2016), and more. Last year, L.I.E.S. just made it in time before the January 1st deadline with Collection X, a second-chance label compilation of various artist’s ambient tracks once offered free until then. I can say with certainty that Collection X already created more of those moments this spring. Several tracks already had reminded me of the spectres of electronics’ past: traces of Scorn’s “Still Life” (1992) in 45 ACP’s “Graveyard Shift” under slow blinking lights or Sonic Subjunkies’ “Central Industrial” (1995) as distant chimes in S. English’s “Sanctuary“ world, or the heavy early-Eighties industrial clanking of Skinny Puppy’s “Carry” equivalent to Fernando’s ”A Praga”. You can opt to get lost in a surreal dream world through Jorge Velez’ “Tiger Pool” or encompass yourself in heavy fog of Cienfuegos’ “American Motels” under short digital brushes of light rattling noise. Yet Terekke’s “Closer” is that special world that needs to be experienced when synth attacks literally and slowly trickle down and drip clarity from above.

Collection X goes to show that L.I.E.S. doesn’t have to deliver techno and electronics all the time to be great. It was so good that we featured a third of it on one of our recent spring volumes, and tracks from S. English and Terekke already made a recent superior walk through Central Park more memorable.

L.I.E.S. label Music For Shut-Ins (2014)

It’s that time of the year (summer) again where this double-disc compilation is on heavy rotation. It was four summers ago when I moved to Lindenhurst and came home one hot June day to a to an upstairs double room complete with attic, wide closet, and a window facing the rising sunsets. And, located close to three surrounding record store around me: Massapequa’s Infinity Records, Amityville’s High Fidelity Records, and West Babylon’s Looney Tunes. I was in heaven. I never expected Lindenhurst to be a neighborhood I’d move to. I also never expected to have airliners flyng low over the new albeit temporary house. Hot off labelhead Ron Morelli’s Periscope Blues (2014) thanks to Hospital Productions, L.I.E.S. second label compilation Music For Shut-Ins came into play.

Very quickly, tracks from Legowelt, Svengalisghost, and Samantha Vacation made the first days in Lindenhurst already memorable. Let’s not forget Florian Kupfer’s “Feelin’“ echoing a classic New York house style track or Daywalker & CF’s vibrant "You Only Live Once”. That’s only disc 1. Morelli continues to find a knack of leftfield sounds for the dancefloor on disc 2 starting with Jahiliyya Fields’ “White Lighter” which tears light, time and space in the harshest respect. There’s sour repetitive blitter from Antenes “PBX-555”. The multiple layers of synths, complex hypnotic rhythms, and twilight ambience is Xosar’s world and L.I.E.S crown jewels. What may seem simple and minimal on Beautiful Swimmers’ “The Zoo” becomes so super fresh that it can’t go wrong. Or try dealing with Beau Wanzer “Crush of Lust” head on; a bubbling cosmic mindfuck. Hearing Music For Shut-Ins in its’ entirety shows Morelli’s knack for finding new sounds, ideas, and concepts helps to push the techno-dance world forward, and boosts little-known artists and his label portfolio forward.
