(Part 1!) Now Wimbledon has begun, I wanted to share some of my favourite photos of Bertie playing tennis!
Tumblr media
When he was still The Duke of York, he participated in a doubles match at Wimbledon with his mentor & friend, Louis Greig (above). Bertie was extremely anxious and asked to play on one of the outer courts, as opposed to Centre Court, to keep attention away from him. A compromise was eventually made for Court 2, where there was still a considerable crowd.
Tumblr media
One spectator recalled that, ‘The Duke of York was very nervous and couldn’t play at all, at times lashing at the ball with his racquet…”
The Prince and Louis Greig lost the match in straight sets: 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 to Herbert Roper Barret and Arthur Gore - both considerably older and more experienced than the then 30-year-old Bertie! Some exasperated people in the crowd even yelled out that he should try playing with ‘the other hand’ (i.e. his right hand, as Bertie played tennis left handed). It is likely that his anxieties and quick temper —usually aimed at himself!— affected his game that day.
Tumblr media
In reality, Bertie was, in fact, an extremely talented tennis player!
He had previously won the RAF doubles competition in 1920 (pictured above!) and when at White Lodge, he loved playing tennis with Elizabeth in the mornings, before breakfast.
Tumblr media
The ladies’ Wimbledon champion, Suzanne Lenglen, watched Bertie’s match on Court 2 that day and said that, ‘with plenty of practice’ he would have ‘the makings of a champion’. Nonetheless, the whole Wimbledon experience traumatised the sensitive Duke, and he never played a game in public again.

.
P.S. Sorry I've been very absent from this page! I'm so, so busy with work :( But I promise to catch up on all your questions, and I have a ton of Bertie to share when I get more time!

📸 Paralympics' official YT
Also, in the Court Suzanne-Lenglen...
Another thrilling spectacle occurred in the wheelchair tennis field of the 2024 Summer Paralympics, where the bronze medal match took place between third seed Guy Sasson, who got comebacked from 4-1 up in both sets and defeated by first seed Sam Schroder 6-7(1), 4-6 in the semifinals, took on Ahmet Kaplan, who got stunned by first seed Niels Vink 1-6, 1-6 after another flawless performance. This turned out to be a tricky affair between both players, whose range consistency played a trivial role for them to be able to stand out at the end of the match.
Guy initially started solidly by breaking to 1-0 thanks to a return ace and A. Kaplan's backhand error that secured his initial break point, but the latter's anticipation, as well as powerful forehand winners, secured his break-back to 1-1. A. Kaplan then held his serves to 2-1, but he started the next game with a forehand return ace before breaking to 3-1, where he followed with a consolidation to 4-1 afterward. Guy then followed suit with a service game hold to 4-2, but he steadily became more aggressive as a forehand winner started his next game before breaking back to 4-3.
Subsequently, if A. Kaplan fired a cross-court backhand winner to force the deuce, where he ended up breaking back to 5-3, earning himself a chance to serve for the first set. However, Guy started nailing his returns again and broke back to 5-4 thanks to his forehand return ace that paved the way before Guy's preceding forehand to A. Kaplan's forehand error converting the said break point. Guy then held his service game to 5-5.
After that, A. Kaplan held his serves to 6-5, and kept pressing Guy from the baseline. In this regard, after capitalizing on a previous error, A. Kaplan secured his break point thanks to his fourth-shot forehand winner, followed by his swift forehand return to Guy's +1 backhand error to break for the first set 7-5, putting himself on the verge of a possible on-paper upset in this match.

Dan Evans suffers first-round French Open defeat to Holger Rune | Tennis News
Dan Evans was left in a flap by Holger Rune, the umpire and a pigeon as he exited the French Open in the first round again. The British number three was startled by a bird and rowed furiously with chair official Jaume Campistol before being sent packing by Danish 13th seed Rune 6-4 6-4 6-4. The flashpoint came in the third set after Rune was warned for smashing his racket against the ground and argued his case. In the next game Evans, a break up, was waiting to serve when Rune disputed a line call, prompting another lengthy discussion. You don’t have to have a conversation with him. It’s twice in two games. Madness.” Earlier, in the second set, Evans had to take evasive action after he was dive-bombed by a pigeon. Roland Garros chiefs are so pleased with the new roof they had installed on Court Suzanne Lenglen that they gave it an inauguration ceremony at the weekend. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Speaking after an early exit from the French Open at Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal suggested playing at Wimbledon would not be a good idea. But an obvious flaw is the gaps between the roof and the walls of the arena, which are big enough for pigeons to fly in, but too small for them to find their way back out. Evans could at least force a smile as the ‘clay pigeon’ landed on the baseline and Rune and a ball kid shooed it away. But was Rune who homed in on victory to condemn Evans to a sixth first-round defeat in seven visits to Paris. It was also a seventh straight loss and a 16th since the turn of the year, leaving Evans slipping down the pecking order in the rankings. What’s coming up on Sky Sports Tennis?
