His face fascinates me. His Great Brow overshadows his Eyes and in a human person this expression would be called a scowl, but in the Gorilla it seems to mean the exact opposite. He represent many things, among them Peace, Tranquility, Strength and Endurance.

Some initial thoughts from around the halfway point. Piranesi is a charming and effect narrator. The wonder he has for absolutely everything is both an essential and driving force of the story and a treat for the reader because it lets us savour the world-building in a loving yet unforced way.

And another one, because I'm obsessed, and because for some mysterious reason carving with shaking hands is way easier than drawing. Carved shell, moss and resin, sea glass and pearls for a necklace.

I am only 15% or so deep into Piranesi, but - first A+ for imagination and characterization and fascination and glorious writing -
but also, it's too early to tell, but is she actually using symbolism in the sense I think she is? The white cross that is actually an albatross that Piranesi has an overwhelming sense to welcome and literally merge with - that awes as it flies but comes down to the ground level and becomes relatable and loveable? I hope so!
I'm not suggesting this is an allegory - indeed I hope it's not an allegory proper - but I am here for the story having multiple layers in which you can enjoy it! I might be entirely misjudging here - but still.
