Busman’s holiday
A couple of weeks ago, I travelled to my first international conference following the pandemic lockdowns.  It was stimulating to hear presentations from well-established researchers who I had not seen in person for four or five years and to meet new researchers who had joined our community since 2019.  It was exciting to present our own research to an international audience for the first time and…

O praeclaram supellectilem libroru *
Cicero
Oh, what fine furniture books are! *
The Athenaeum Club library.
The Athenaeum tends to attract the cream of the academic world (over 51 Nobel Prize winners) in literature and science.
The Pall Mall-based club was established in 1823 and is named after the ancient Roman Athenaeum, the centre for the study of literature and science.
Sir Charles Darwin used the Athenaeum to study in 1838. In one letter, dated August 9, he said: "I go and dine at the Athenaeum like a gentleman, or rather like a lord, for I am sure that the first evening I sat in that great drawing-room on the sofa by myself, I felt just like a duke. I am full of admiration for the Athenaeum, one meets so many people there that one likes to see … Your helping me into the Athenaeum has not been thrown away, and I enjoy it the more because I fully expected to detest it."
Breaking 150 years of tradition, the 2000 members of the gentleman's club for the 'intellectually elite' voted to allow women to become members in 2002. Baroness Susan Greenfield, professor of pharmacology at the University of Oxford, was the first woman invited and others have followed since.
Hands down one of the best libraries in club land. But they also have the most intrusive librarian with the beadiest eye to keep watch on you from her desk.

Martha Tennent Rogers (Mrs. David Rogers) and her Son, Probably Samuel Henry Rogers
Artist: Ralph Earl (American, 1751-1801)
Date: 1788
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, United States
Martha Tennent (Mrs David Rogers) and Son
Martha Tennent (1751-1813) was the daughter of Rev. Charles & Martha Tennent of Buckingham, Maryland. She married David Rogers in 1772. Their 12 children were baptized in Greenfield Hill, where her brother William served for a time as minister. In the portrait she wears a brown dress with long sleeves, & over her shoulders is a large white muslin kerchief. A few curls of her dark brown hair show modestly beneath her white cap, which is tied with a blue bow. According to costume historian Aileen Ribeiro, the indoor cap was "de rigueur in England & America for middle-class married women, particularly in households with strong Protestant beliefs." Mrs. Rogers is seated in a red upholstered armchair… The extended arms of the chair seem to have been exaggerated for effect. As art historian Elizabeth Kornhauser has noted, the chair is "a variation on the form seen in Earl's English & New York portraits... more suited to a gentleman's study or library."
Behind & to the right of Mrs. Rogers appear a meadow & trees. On her lap she holds a child wearing a pink frock with a large blue sash. The child's ash-blond hair is cut with straight bangs & shoulder-length curls. This child is probably Samuel Henry Rogers, who was born on 25 May 1786, 2 years before the portrait was painted. Like his 2 older brothers named Samuel, born in 1782 & 1784, he did not survive childhood. Another son born in 1796 was also named Samuel Henry. Boys often wore the same loose-fitting frock as girls, until they were 3 or 4 years old. The lack of "aprons and white indoor caps" was a subtle feature that distinguished them from girls. The Rogers had 2 daughters, Martha & Susan or Susanna, born in 1774 & 1778, respectively. Jacobus lists a 3rd daughter, Julia Ann, born in 1794; plus a boy named "Julian." Martha Tennent's husband Dr David Rogers (1748-1829) was trained as a doctor by his father, Dr. Uriah Rogers of Norwalk, & was licensed to practice medicine in New York City. He probably met the artist Ralph Earl through Dr. Mason Fitch Cogswell, with whom Rogers had served as an army surgeon in Connecticut during the Revolution. Later, in 1792, Rogers & Cogswell were founders of the Connecticut Medical Society.

“Sometimes I feel like reaching down from the stage and grabbing people and slamming them against the wall with my voice. Ι want to make ‘em wake up and listen. I love those people." – Etta James
Born with an epic voice, Etta James fought her whole life for the recognition she finally received.
Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938, in Los Angeles, California, to a 14-year-old mother, Dorothy Hawkins, who encouraged her daughter's singing career. James would later say, "My mother always told me, even if a song has been done a thousand times, you can still bring something of your own to it. I'd like to think I did that." James never knew her father.
Of her will to survive bad luck, overcoming heroin addiction, and changing times, James mused, "What's kept me going is faith, and trying to prove something. It could be ego. But I never have an ego except when I'm onstage. I just want to prove to people I'm gonna hang in there. And I just hang right in there."
Etta James underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost over 200 pounds. The dramatic weight loss had an impact on her voice, as she told Ebony magazine, “I can sing lower, higher and louder.”
As she entered her 70s, Etta James began struggling with health issues. She was hospitalized in 2010 for a blood infection and other ailments. It was later revealed that the legendary singer suffered from dementia and was receiving treatment for leukemia.
At the end of her life, she was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, received a Grammy Lifetime Award, and her album 'Let's Roll' won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Podcast guests include Poet Lorraine Brooks, the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach, Dr. Monique Renee Rolle DPM, Catherine Schuller AICI, CIP, Susan Greenberg Weiner MS, RDN, CDE, CDN, and Mama Rose Marie. What books would you recommend?
Just started reading this month, finished my first book, and currently got myself another " Atomic Habits "
I’m not huge on self help books. I read classics and fantasy. I do have a few psychology and economics books on my shelf so it really depends on what you enjoy.
If you enjoy Atomic Habits you should try:
Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
Others that I enjoyed:
The Divided Self by R.D Laing
The Private Life of the Brain by Susan Greenfield
Reaching Down the Rabbit Hole by Allan Ropper and B.D Burrell
The Pattern Seekers by Simon Baron-Cohen
Come back if I can help you with fictional recs, that’s where my specialty is. None of this dark romance or romance crap, just dragons, swords and big adventures.

The Human Brain by Susan Greenfield • Having read and been fascinated by Greenfield’s book ‘mind change’ I wanted to go back and read one of her earlier books. This is exactly what is says in the cover, a guided talk of the brain: in gross structure and looking on a smaller molecular level. I found the section on consciousness and forming memories especially interesting - I’d recommend this to anyone interested in biology 🌿

We’re talking about the DIABETES BLUES with musical inspiration from Etta James on this Divabetic podcast.
Etta James is a Grammy Award-winning singer known for hit songs like "I'd Rather Go Blind" and "At Last.”
Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938, in Los Angeles, California, to a 14-year-old mother, Dorothy Hawkins, who encouraged her daughter's singing career. James never knew her father.
Etta James was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993, prior to her signing a new recording contract with Private Records.
Etta James underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost over 200 pounds. The dramatic weight loss impacted her voice, as she told Ebony magazine, “I can sing lower, higher and louder.”
