in groep 8 schreven we een werkstuk. het onderwerp: jezelf. ik schreef pagina's vol over vakanties, sport, school, familie, wat ik zou doen als ik miljonair was (caviaopvang, tuin vol treurwilgen en palmbomen, telefoon van roze diamanten). ik maakte een collage als voorblad met plaatjes van high school musical, boeken, mijn sterrenbeeld. ik plakte mijn geboortekaartje erin (i love her so much / that i can never tell / if she's sweeter to look at / or sweeter to smell), foto's van mijn vader in zijn supermanshirt en kale bolle kop van de chemo, onze eerste cavia, ik op wintersport, in ons huis in frankrijk, mijn broertjes, kinderyoga, mijn klas. ik schreef: ik houd graag dingen voor mezelf. in de klas kreeg iedereen een voor een zijn beoordeling op de gang. mijn juf zei: het is knap dat je zo open bent geweest. je hebt een tien. als enige in de klas.

mijn vader kreeg kanker op zijn vijfendertigste. de reden waarom hij sindsdien elke dag testosteron op zijn lijf smeert. ik zat in groep 2. mijn jongste broertje had nog niet eens zijn eerste verjaardag gevierd. ik herinner me er niks van, behalve dat hij vaak zijn supermanshirt droeg. zijn diagnose kreeg hij op de dag de twin towers instortten. met de juf maakten we een kunstwerk dat nog steeds in zijn kast ligt: iedereen in de klas kreeg een papieren uitgeknipte paddenstoel en mocht die op hun manier inkleuren. de juf plakte alle paddenstoelen op een groot bruin vel papier en gaf die aan me mee. mijn vader werd beter. en op den duur kon hij weer met ons stoeien zoals vroeger.
