First descent to Voltiks – monsters of desert

Pixel art for today based on videogame Super Turrican 2 for game console Super Nintendo. Cyborg robot action movie. About cyborg robot. With excellent super class 16 bit graphics.  Excellent 16 bit action. Like action movie. And you cannot stop it. And no need to do this. Such games you need to play from start to very end. And later, from time to time to go back to these titles. Science fiction. Future. Bright graphics. Everything is super class!
And this is my drawing about same theme. Planet Voltiks. It is famous with its desert landscapes. 10 squad of cybernetical troops is already finishing to clear the planet. So, it was looks like it is several days before incident will ends. And it is already going for several months. But rangers of desert, while they have a losing situation. But they go into the deep desert. And they come back with new attitude. They learn how to grow up in desert a big desert dragons. And another hunting dangerous types. Which can to dig into the desert. And all them are big hunters monsters. They grow up fast. And there are lots of them already. With such supply forces, rangers of desert call this planet their land. And they surround 10 cybernetical troops squad. You are straight from 2nmd descent to this planet. First descent landed from another cornet of the desert. And you are landed here. And you will go into hottest region. To not to get them into the surround situation. Until support will land.
Rangers of desert are strong enemy from the very beginning. But no one know that they have biological labs into the desert. In underground bunker. Deep in desert. And their experiments are rather saucerful. Your aim is to enter lab. And take all that you can take. Something usefull. Lab is made out of underground levels. And it is most dangerous place. There are lots of creatures there. And all them are grown up and raged as a whole army of monsters.

Пиксель арт на сегодня по мотивам видеоигры Super Turrican 2 для игровой приставки Супер Нинтендо. Киборг робот супер боевик. Про киборга робота. С классной 16 битной графикой. Отличный 16 битный боевик. От которого сложно оторваться. Да и не надо. Такие игрушки надо проходить от начала и до самого конца. А потом время от времени снова проходить. Фантастика. Будущее. Яркая графика. Все супер!
А это мой рисунок на подобную тему. Планета Вольтикс. Славится своими пустынными пейзажами. 10ый отряд кибернетических пехотинцев заканчивает зачистку планеты. Казалось бы, оставались считанные дни до завершения инцидента. Который длился уже несколько месяцев. Но рейнджеры пустыни, хотя и потерпели поражение. Но ушли в глубь пустыни. И вернулись оттуда с новым подходом. Они научились выращивать в пустыне огромных песчаных драконов. И другие опасные хищные виды. Которые умеют зарываться в песок. И это всегда хищные огромные монстры. Они быстро растут. И их уже много. С таким подкреплением рейнджеры пустыни объявили эту планету своей территорией. И окружили 10ый отряд кибернетических пехотинцев. Ты как раз из 2ого десанта на планету. Первый десант высадился с другого угла пустыни.  А ты высадился здесь и направляешься в самое пекло. Чтобы не дать попасть в полное окружение.  Пока не прибудет подкрепление.
Рейнджеры пустыни казались сильным противников с самого начала. Но никто не знал, что они имеют биологические лаборатории в подземном бункере. Далеко в пустыне. И их эксперименты оказались успешными. Твоя задача пройти в лабораторию. И взять оттуда все что может быть полезно. Лаборатория состоит из подземных уровней. И это самое опасное место. Там очень много разных существ. И все они выросли и вырвались, как целая хищная армия.

Ninja JaJaMaru-kun (NES)
Developed/Published by: Jaleco Released: 15/11/1985 Completed: 30/03/2023 Completion: Beat all 20 levels before it loops. Version Played: Switch Online Trophies / Achievements: n/a
Ninja JaJaMaru-kun is a series with absolutely no name recognition in the west, even if ININ have put out one of their stupid retro collections of the series where you don’t get all the games unless you buy a specific edition, instead of just, you know, putting out the games in one simple package (if you search for “Ninja JaJaMaru” on the eshop, you get four different options, and you have to buy two of them to get all the games. But makes sure it’s the right two!)
Of course, you could forget all of that and just download the first game via the Japanese Switch Online service, like what I did, because… like me, you don’t have any nostalgia for this series at all. It’s not like it’s Turrican or something (that’s got three different confusing collections thanks to ININ.)
I suppose what makes Ninja JaJaMaru-kun interesting though is that it was a huge success in Japan selling over one million copies–and this, remember, is coming just a couple of months after Super Mario Bros. was released. This would probably make it surprising that it never came out on NES until you realise that City Connection, Jaleco’s previous title, wouldn’t make it out in the US until May 1988, nearly three years after its original release, by which time Contra, Mega Man and Castlevania have all come out, rendering the simple arcade thrills of a wee car driving (or a wee ninja jumping) around a bit old hat. And, to be honest, there’s enough of a similarity between City Connection and Ninja JaJaMaru-kun as side-scrolling platformers that if you had to release one, you’re probably going to release the one that everyone understands (cars) rather than the one with a more specific cultural reference point (ninjas.) Even 80s ninja action films were having their last gasp by 1988 (American Ninja 2: The Confrontation probably the last notable release, and that came out in 1987 and didn’t do that well.) Although I suppose they could have tried to claim JaJaMaru was a reptile of some sort and ride the rising Turtle craze...
That all said, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I quite liked Ninja JaJaMaru-kun, to the point where I would happily say I liked it quite a bit more than the NES port of City Connection. It’s an extremely basic little platformer, something that clearly speaks to the pre-Super Mario Bros. era of Mappy and Ice Climber. Every level features eight enemies, two on each of the four levels of the level (er, look at the picture if this doesn’t make sense) with for the majority of the levels the last top right enemy a “boss” that’s a bit harder to kill (until in later levels they turn into a normal enemy and aren’t quite as bad, somehow.) You can jump, and shoot shurikens that don’t travel especially far, and to get between the different levels you can destroy platforms above you, which sometimes expose power-ups (or bombs, if you’re unlucky). Ninja JaJaMaru-kun only dies to being shot by enemies, not touching them, and for about half the game, you can just shoot the enemies, but from then on you have to stun them by jumping on their heads (or by manufacturing a way to make them drop a level and fall over) so you can shoot them.
Oh, and the power-ups are things like a little cart (?) that allows you to just run into all the enemies at full speed. And if you collect three… you ride a giant frog (???) that freezes all the enemies and allows you to jump about eating them–basically making beating a level trivial.
Additionally, at the top of the screen you can see the “Catfish Pirate” and Princess Sakura who you are, ostensibly, trying to rescue–which you can only do in a special bonus level where you get to shoot your shurikens upwards at the Catfish Pirate, accessible if you collect three sakura petals that Princess Sakura infrequently drops during normal levels. Which you can’t hang around waiting for, because if you take too long in a level the Catfish Pirate starts going mental chucking bombs at you. 
In description, it doesn’t really sound like all that, and it’s honestly a bit… kusoge-adjacent, considering it’s got jerky scrolling, poor animation, dodgy collision detection and really not that much going on. But it’s sort of weirdly pleasant to play once you get into it, with the “jump on an enemy to shoot them” mechanic quickly becoming second nature making clearing off levels efficiently feel quite rewarding. It’s not all gravy; sometimes the boss enemies are going to juke you in way that feels genuinely unfair, and you can sometimes get caught in little collision-loops that just end up in your death.
But I can kind of see why this was a phenomenon–at least at a time when Super Mario Bros. hasn’t yet set the tone for everything yet to come. 
Will I ever play it again? I can’t imagine I will, and it hasn’t done enough to make me put up with ININ’s bullshit to get the sequels.
Final Thought: “But wait,” you might be asking “what’s the deal with the giant frog? I mean you kind of just glossed over that.” 
Well, turns out it’s a reference to The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya, a series of Japanese books that was published in the early 1800s, in which a giant frog that lives on a mountain teaches the main character magic, including the ability to summon and ride giant frogs. This apparently also inspired some characters in Naruto, and is probably also why that Pokemon Greninja is a ninja frog. The more you know!

what's the most out-of-place game you own, something that you have no idea why you have it? like for some reason i have xmen on game gear
I don't know that this applies to physical games, honestly. I got so few games growing up that each one is a clear memory. Like, let's take these photos I tweeted of my SNES game collection in 2017. Some of these games are nearly 30 years old and I remember where almost all of them came from.
Most of them were Christmas, obviously. I have distinct Christmas Morning memories of games like Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and Zelda.
Donkey Kong Country was one of last Christmas presents I ever spoiled for myself, since I knew where my Mom kept them before wrapping them and putting them under the tree. I was so excited for the game and I felt bad that I ruined the surprise (there were other factors that contributed to this, but that's another post).
My copy of Super Turrican was from my Cousins. I will never forget my aunt proudly reading the back of the box to me. "The sound alone is enough to turn your brain in to a crispy critter."
A lot of these were used. You can tell -- some of them have stickers on them for King Sooper's (a Kroger grocery chain store), others have stickers for Game Force (the local game trader before Gamestop moved in).
Super Mario RPG was the first game I ever bought with my own money. Final Fantasy II was a game I got because I was jonesin' hard for Final Fantasy VII but didn't have a Playstation. I saw Gradius III at a friend's house, knew I'd hate it, but ended up with a copy any way because it was cheap at a flea market. Wheel of Fortune was technically something my mom bought for herself. Star Fox was an unfortunate scenario where I went over to a friend's house, borrowed the game, and then found out he quietly moved away before I could give it back. I got Chrono Trigger because a friend wanted my copy of Sonic & Knuckles and we traded for it (I think I came out on top, because by this point I already had Sonic Jam for the Saturn). Killer Instinct was one of the first games I ever bought off of Ebay.
If you want to get to the REAL obscure games, Steam is the best place for that. My Steam account is 18 years old and thanks to Humble Bundle I have TONS of games I don't remember buying. That, and, for a time, an indie publisher was just sending me dozens and dozens of keys for random games and in the back of my mind I always had this thought of "I'll do something with these some day."
Every time I scroll through my game list, I hit on at least five or ten "I forgot I had this" games, like:
The Ascent, Atomicrops, Bee Simulator, Calico, Carcassonne, Cook Serve Delicious 3, CrossCode, D: The Game, Deathloop, Dirt Rally 2, Dustforce, Gas Station Simulator, Ghostrunner, Hob, Houseflipper, Minoria, Monster Train, Panzer Paladin, Resident Evil VII
And that's not even a full list of "every game I don't remember buying or being gifted."
The fact that so many games can just show up in my Steam account as if appearing out of thin air should be kind of a problem. And it sucks, too, because despite owning almost 1500 games on Steam, there's still a ton more that I want. My wishlist has over 450 games on it, and I cull it semi-regularly. But at some point its throwing them in to an impossible-to-comprehend pile where I just have too many PC games.
Games are weird, dude.

Em 1990, Manfred Trenz trouxe ao público um game curioso chamado Turrican(タリカン) para Commodore 64. O game carrega uma gama de inspirações em Metroid, Psycho-Nics Oscar e Robocop. Enquanto o level design estendido e a função de se transformar em uma bola eram inspirados por Metroid, o design de gráficos e armas é derivado de Psycho-Nics Oscar. Diferente de muitos platformers de ação, Turrican não forçava o jogador a completar um estágio linear, em vez disso, jogadores poderiam explorar cada estágio para descobrir segredos escondidos. Turrican teve continuação com Turrican II the Final Fight em 1991. Writing & stuff (Part 1)
So, I think it's time i use this blog for what it is : a blog ! Note : all french terms will be translated in parenthesis.
Writing : how it all started I'm a french writer, almost 40yo, gay, soon to be "Pacsé" (PACS) to my lovely Marine boyfriend (French Navy). Since I was a child I wanter to tell stories but at the time, i couldn't even try, too affraid and never had enough motivation.
Like a lot of people, videogames played a big part in my inspirations. One of the very first game that made me think about how deep a story could be was The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the Nintendo GameBoy. I was around 10 years old when I got the game and, as a kid, it blew me away (the ending still brings tears to my eyes 29 years later).

It was so different to everything I played so far on the Amstrad CPC & Amiga. And the first one to make me cry at the end. Not long after that, my brother got a Super Nintendo and I got The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past for my birthday and it unlocked something in me : medieval setting, magic, swords, secrets, exploration... basically everything I loved.
And a few years after that, my brother brought what probably motivated me the most to start telling stories : Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2 in Japan). I vividly remember when my brother started the game, a loud yet distant cry of a monster is heard while the "Nintendo" & "Squaresoft" logos appears. I said "Wow". My sister said "Why do you 'wow' ? There's nothing !" but then the title screen appeared with the amazing theme song "Fear of the Heavens" by Hiroki Kikuta. I knew there was something more than just the roar of a powerful creature on a black screen.

This game even made me fall in love with dragons ; I loved calling "Flammy" the dragon to fly all around the massive world, always felt sad to kill a dragon to advance the story and even the final one. I didn't knew back then "why" I loved dragons ; I just loved their design, how majestic they looked, and wondered what their stories was, why were they attacking the heroes while Flammy was helping us etc.
Off course, other games added their stone like Breath of Fire III from Capcom, Illusion of Time (Illusion of Gaia in the US), Terranigma, Secret of Evermore and so many more... even games like Metroid and Turrican, two of my most beloved franchises.
I finally started working on my first book : "Denaris I : Le Mot Oublié" (Denaris I: The Forgotten Word) -Note : The title of the first volume was originally "Les Seigneur d'Yseïr" (Lords of Yseir)- in August 2003 (the 08/06/2003 to be exact). It went throught publishing for the first time on the 6th of February 2010 but after my publisher lied to me (no corrections, never read the manuscrit, published the unfinished version instead of the one I completed) and tried to keep selling the books after I ordered their destruction, I got my rights back and took a break. I came back to work on it in January 2011 but I was never satisfied and I left the first volume in a corner to work on the second and third volumes. Then, between 2015 and 2019, I managed to fix the whole first volume.
It was exhausting and massively crushed my motivation. Feeling that I would never write again if I kept working on the first or even the other three volumes, I started another story, more or less linked to Denaris, in a different setting.
Another world, another story
I felt the urge to write something that was NOT about Denaris but yet, always wanted to link both stories, just with a few characters and never, ever force anyone to have read a story to understand the other. Denaris was medieval fantasy, so the next story would be its exact opposite : science fiction with a little bit of cyberpunk.
Thus, Soleil Lirien : Contrôle Total (Lirian Sun: Full Control) was born... but I couldn't even start the damn thing ! I was always fumbling around with the main character : A man ? Ok, another one. Probably gay. What's his story ? Linked to one of the characters from Denaris ? But if I do so, I'll have to tell everything to get to the point where it makes sense in both Denaris and Lirian Sun...
It went like that for a long time until I started watching "The Jimquisition" by James Stephanie Sterling. While I loved the show (and still do), the opening song of their show clicked right away with me. "I love the style and the lyrics", I thought. I searched for the artist, "DrillQueen" and looked at the cover art of her album and "voilà". I instantly knew what I wanted to do. Who would become the main character of Lirian Sun.

Jenneth McGuire was born this day and my brain became filled with lots of ideas. Working on Lirian Sun helped me so much, it made me like writing again. It made me cry, smile and laugh and care so much about the characters.
