Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge - DLC Aircraft Ideas
I know some people are gonna look at this and say "WTF man, Crimson Skies came out in 2003... it's not getting any new content!"
True. But there's always a possibility- however small- that the game could be re-released on modern consoles, or (God willing) get a full-blown remake. In which case, the devs could always add new planes.
The original PC game had 17 playable aircraft, most of which did not make it into the Xbox game. Only 2 planes, the Devastator and the Brigand, would ship with the game. 4 others would be added as DLC for online multiplayer only.
I picked out 7 aircraft from the original PC game that I would like to see added if Crimson Skies gets a remake, and outlined what class I think they should be, and what weapons they could have.
It'll probably never happen, but hey... I can dream. And remember, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge was one of the top 5 game on the OG Xbox Live, right alongside Halo 2 and Star Wars: Battlefront II. So I'd say it has a better chance of getting a remake than most.

Raven
Class: Interceptor
Primary Weapon: Six Machine Guns
Secondary Weapon: RF-Guided "Beeperless" Seeker Rockets
Secondary Ammunition: 20 Rockets
A fast and agile fighter with six machine guns and highly accurate radio-guided Seeker Rockets that track targets aggressively. Seeker Rockets function like the Halo 2 Rocket Launcher; hold down the trigger to lock on to enemies, and release to fire.
The name of the Seeker Rocket is a reference to the "Beeper-Seeker" rocket from Crimson Skies lore. Whereas the Beeper-Seeker uses a two-stage system, firing a high-velocity "Beeper" rocket that emits a radio signal, followed up with a high-explosive "Seeker" rocket that homes in on that signal, these new rockets are able to track their targets without the need for a beeper unit; hence, "Beeperless".

Avenger
Class: Dogfighter
Primary Weapon: Eight Machine Guns
Secondary Weapon: "Detonator III" Incendiary Rockets
Secondary Ammunition: 15 Rockets
Armed with more machine guns than any other plane in the game, along with a secondary rocket that sets enemy planes on fire for damage over time. So you get the best of the Devastator and the Bandito all in one plane.

Warhawk
Class: Zep-Killer
Primary Weapon: Four "Scorpion" Cannons
Secondary Weapon: Dual Triggers
Based on Paladin Blake's customized Warhawk from the tie-in novel, this modified Warhawk is outfitted with four standard cannons that fire in pairs, just like the Dauphin and the Bulldog. However, when the Left Trigger is held, all four cannons will fire simultaneously at an increased rate of fire for massive damage.

Bloodhawk
Class: Interceptor
Primary Weapon: Four Machine Guns
Secondary Weapon: XL-1 "Lancer" Laser Cannon
Secondary Ammunition: 100 Battery Charge
The standout feature of the Bloodhawk is it's secondary laser, which is extremely accurate and has unlimited ammo, but has to recharge it's battery after firing for long periods of time. Ammo starts and 100 and counts down to 0 as you fire. The longer you fire, the longer it takes to fully recharge.

Kestrel
Class: Zep-Killer
Primary Weapon: Five Cannons
Secondary Weapon: Aerial Torpedoes
Secondary Ammunition: 15 Torpedoes
Turret: Twin Cannons
As pure a Zep-Killer as can be, the Kestrel boasts five rapid-fire cannons, as well as two more cannons in a rear turret a la the Brigand. It's secondary weapon is a rocket-propelled Aerial Torpedo that deals tremendous damage to zeppelins, but has no magnetic lock-on, making it all but useless against enemy planes.
However... if you do somehow manage to score a hit on an enemy plane with the Aerial Torpedo (whether by skill, or dumb luck) it's a 1-hit kill no matter how high your opponents armor rating.
Bell Mk. II
Tumblr media
Valiant
Class: Zep-Killer
Primary Weapons: Six Cannons
Secondary Weapon: Grenade Launcher
Secondary Ammunition: 30 Grenades
An exceptional Zep-Killer with six cannons right out of the box, and a secondary grenade launcher. Grenades deal massive damage to zeppelins and ground targets, but are less useful against enemy planes than other Zep-Killer weapons.
Marquette PR-1

Defender
Class: Interceptor
Primary Weapons: Six Machine Guns
Secondary Weapon: "Flyswatter" Flak Rockets
Secondary Ammunition: 20 Rockets
A capable fighter in the right hands, the Defender is armed with six machine guns and Flak Rockets. Flak Rockets have the damage of the Devastator's Magnetic Missiles with the projectile speed of the Bandito's Fireball Cannon, making them highly accurate and easy to use.

Capturing the ambience of Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
This cult Xbox title launches pilots into dogfights above a handful of locales, each with its own auditory footprint.
Tumblr media
Running the game
At the time of writing, the two dominant Xbox emulators offer significantly different experiences. Cxbx-Reloaded is performant but exhibits some (minor) graphical issues. Much more significantly, it sometimes crashes which can prevent the completion of story missions.
If your system can handle it, you can use Xemu. Or, continue using Cxbx while skipping missions (see below) to avoid any problematic portions in the game.
Installing DLC and title update
Xbox Live is no longer operation for original Xboxes, but fans have archived this content, and made it easy to install. Before installing it, you'll want to apply some rendering-improvement modifications - see below.

Capturing footage
To record footage from The Pandora, which serves as the Hunters' hangar, we can remove the HUD elements present at plane selection. The easiest way to achieve this is capture one of the HUD-less frames during the short transition between mission selection and fighter selection, and render it as an overlay on top of our recorded hangar footage.
I don't know of any Xbox emulators which support texture mods. If such an option existed, we could replace the textures which make up the HUD. We could also try to manipulate the extracted texture files, and run the modified game. But I didn't try either of these.
The HUD is briefly hidden when your plane is shown exiting the Pandora to enter a free-roam area. I tried getting this state to persist using Cheat Engine, but failed.
Extracting sounds
My favorite tool for extracting Xbox files is wx360 v1.6.
Crimson Skies has a ton of audio directories. We're most interested in Pandora_Internal, inside the UI folder, and the dedicated ZIP archives for each locale (AX, CH, LC, and SH). There are some other streams in the general archive as well.
To convert the Xbox audio files we can use vgmstream (I recommend the command line tool) or VLC. I found the results were slightly different - personally in these situations I tend to trust vgmstream.
After comparing in-game recordings to simple asset loops, I believe that the game somehow specifies loop start/end points for its ambient streams. I'm not sure where this information is stored however - perhaps the SDB files inside the data archive?
For mission areas, it seems like the game crossfades relevant ambient assets by about 5 seconds to create a continuous loop.
Skipping missions
You can use CrimsonData.txt files from completed saved games, or use cheats to speedrun the game. However, I couldn't get the former to work - presumably there is some kind of checksum system at work to prevent cheating or DLC piracy. There are tools to re-sign saved content but the one I tried doesn't support Crimson Skies.
Putting it all together
Render your properly looped assets on top of your footage and any overlay to eliminate HUD elements.

A normal human would have probably died several times by now. But even for an immortal with inhuman power, the intense journey, paired with the most violent WEAPON syphoning his energy, had rendered the gunslinger utterly drained. Even worse, the skies were burning up, signaling the end of the world, adding to the mental drain.
“Hmph… is that so?”
By this time, Vincent could feel himself reaching his energy limit. He had traveled with Sephiroth for days, barely rested in between before traveling several more days later on, backtracked for most of the distance, and then high-tailed back in almost half the time. All without resting, except for when Chaos forced him to collapse in sheer exhaustion.
Pathetic…
Moving himself to one of the rocky bordered walls, Vincent leaned his head back, allowing himself the luxury to rest for a moment. He would have to find the others soon and catch up to them. However, the one caveat was Jenova. He couldn’t tell if he was still bound to her whims. It was peculiar with the turn of events. While he had expected the planet to be nearing an end, he hadn’t anticipated for Sephiroth to engage in powerplay. Was this Jenova’s will? Or his own? Could he outsmart even Jenova herself?
The skies rumbled, and the clouds began to stir. Vincent could see the subtle hue shift and what looked to be a very bright orange glow attempting to break through the clouds. So this was Meteor… the terror of the entire planet. All created by a single black Materia. Somehow, Sephiroth had grabbed a hold of it. With how unstable Cloud had been lately, Vincent could only assume the events that took place. But did Cloud manage to escape with the others? He could only hope so. If he didn’t… he would never forgive himself.
Just as Vincent’s mind was beginning to drift into a state of slumber, Vincent’s attention was immediately arrested when he felt a dark presence approach him. There in front of him was Sephiroth—or at least Sephiroth’s appearance.
Recognizing the essence to be of Jenova, Vincent furrowed his brow, his crimson eyes scrutinizing the figure before him. He listened in complete silence.  It was only afterwards that a faint scoff escaped his sealed lips. The compliment felt more like mockery.
Without saying another word, Vincent took up the bloody delivery package and sardonically threw it towards the shape-shifter’s feet. The head of Hojo rolled out of the cloth, coming to a stop at Sephiroth’s boots, glazed pallid eyes staring upward into Sephiroth’s face.
Depending on Jenova’s answer, Vincent would attempt ascertain whether or not she had lost control over Sephiroth’s will. Even if there was a good chance she would twist things around, a predator who lost control over their prey was bound to unleash revenge in some capacity.
A blight upon the face of the planet… never to plague the world anymore. How ironic.
“Hojo may be dead. But his work lives on…” The gunslinger narrowed his eyes up at the mako colored pair above him. He didn’t free Sephiroth from the clutches of the past, only. There was more to it than that. If it wasn’t clear before, it certainly was now.
“I merely eradicated your competition. Now, you can reclaim your thrown as the sole calamity upon the world.” Though his voice was measured, his eyes held contempt. He didn’t need Jenova to confirm or deny his words. Hojo had been a nuisance to Jenova, and he had just been a tool to be her hitman as it was most convenient. Sephiroth wanted closure, and a reason to test Vincent’s loyalty. At the same time, Hojo’s obsession with the Jenova project was likely a road-block that Jenova wanted removed. Two birds with one stone.
Eventually, Vincent stood up to his fullest height. Though weighed down by fatigue, he wasn’t going to entertain Jenova any more than he already had.
“The contract,” Vincent pressed, cutting to the chase. He glanced over his shoulder towards the massive barrier where Sephiroth was awakening. “I’ve kept my promise till now. But will you keep yours?” He had protected Sephiroth up to this point and it seemed his job was done.
The rain began to beat down mercilessly upon the land. High atop the Sister Ray, the winds were much more fierce, and thunder could be heard echoing in the distance. All the while the skies churned, Vincent’s heart remained still. Hojo was finally dead, so it should have brought him relief. The only thing holding him back was the fact that he had acted per Sephiroth's request, and not his own.
Vincent had intended to do so on his own terms, but his complacency had granted Hojo more time to enact more terror. He had dared to hope that the morbid scientist had an iota of humanity, seeing as how Lucrecia had chosen the him instead of the Ex-Turk. But no… even after all these years, Hojo didn’t even think Lucrecia worthy of her name. The one who should have been condemned to eternal slumber wasn't him... it was Hojo.
Killing Hojo was no small matter. It was the closing of a series of nightmares that hundreds if not thousands of people had suffered under. Vincent had sought an avenue to atone for his sins. Sephiroth had granted Vincent an opportunity to atone for the wrongs he had committed towards the silver-haired man. But it couldn’t undo the past, neither could it quell the hatred Sephiroth had for humanity. It would only be a matter of time until Sephiroth’s judgement would be executed.
Chaos had once again grown eerily silent. It was curious how he could so easily summon Chaos when only days ago, Jenova had proven he no longer had autonomy. Perhaps she had granted the gunslinger control just for this moment. After all, Hojo’s death benefitted the alien as well. Or perhaps… something had changed.
Vincent stood motionless, his vision blurring. Chaos was too over-powering, even for an indestructible body such as Vincent’s. It could barely retain the WEAPON's might. With all his energy expended, Vincent fell limp to the floor, blacking out. Time passed, and the heavens began to stir beyond the storms and raging thunder. Cloud and the others had made their way up to the turbulent path of the Whirlwind Maze, guided by the groanings of men in black robes and Cloud’s obsessive impulse to take down Sephiroth. The group knew they would be up for a fight. But what they hadn’t expected was for Cloud to suddenly lose all sensibility, handing the most destructive materia over to Sephiroth, triggering a count-down for the plane’s demise. The friends panicked. “Cloud… what have you done?!” Barret called out to Cloud, but in vain. “Get down from there!” “It’s too late! Sephiroth has already summoned Meteor!” Nanaki shouted amidst the rumbling of the ground. “We have to get out of here!” “I told you all!” Yuffie bellowed, stomping her feet with clenched fists. “If you had given me that materia, none of this would have happened!” “I’m not leaving Cloud behind!” Tifa exclaimed as she began to rush towards Cloud, quickly prevented by Barret’s strong grip. “There’s no way you both are getting out alive, Tifa! We gotta leave, now!” “Barret’s right,” Cid stated, taking on the tone of a leader, trying his utmost to not sound frantic. “We’re all gonna die here if we don’t high-tail our asses outta here. Let’s move, people!” Cid followed his own orders and began to book it down the mountain. “And Vincent’s still no where to be seen! Where are you, lad?!” Cait mourned as he took one last look of the area. “This isnae like him! He wouldnae abandon us in a time like this.” The robotic cat tried to rationalize Vincent’s uncharacteristic absence. A rock began to tumble, causing the group to scatter. Time was running out and the group began to run down the mountain as rocks crumbled behind them. “Screw it! If we find Vincent, he’s got some explainin’ to do! Leaving us high and dry when he knows damn well the planet’s about to—” Another rock fell and it told Barret now wasn’t the time for speculation. As the group ran down the hill, a disturbing rumble suddenly echoed through the mountain. A kaiser of Lifestream and water burst through the mountain, swallowing everything in its path. The team barely managed to board the Highwind, making a narrow escape. The earth shook, and something else began to awaken from beneath.
Vincent’s eyes slowly opened, still recovering from the aftermath of the ordeal. He felt a foreboding urgency seize him, prompting him to fight against the lingering fatigue. What met his view was a terrifying orange hue that saturated the skies above. It was like the sky itself was beginning to burn up. Once Vincent managed to stand and look upwards, a terrible sense of dread filled his chest. Though the clouds had hidden what was to come, Vincent could sense it, intensely.
Death, destruction, despair… Then, the realization hit him. “Sephiroth…!”
With the severed head in his possession, Vincent bounded towards the Northern Crater. Though immortal, and with the stamina of a monster, Vincent had to command every ounce of his will-power to not collapse in a heap of exhaustion. Using any means possible, Vincent made short work of the distance, and finally made his way back to the place he had left Sephiroth. But it was too late. The cloaked figures had been sacrificed to the Lifestream; not one remained alive. The mountain itself was shrouded in a type of barrier. An ominous power had begun to stir from within. Sephiroth was being reborn. Vincent’s finger’s loosened, dropping the bloody package. Staggering forward, he reached his hand out to touch the barrier, finding it made of a will that was beyond the strength of imagination. The Planet’s days had been numbered. There was no way around it. Either Sephiroth had to die along with Jenova, or the entire planet would forever be wiped from existence, including those of his friends, and Lucrecia. Break his promise to Lucrecia, or condemn them all to their fate. Talons slowly curled, and his eyes began to glow a deadly amber color. In a fit of rage and frustration, Vincent slashed at the barrier with his claw, his arm glowing amethyst, characteristic of the Chaos gene. The barrier only rippled in response to Vincent’s assault. He then collapsed to his knees in a mixture of exhaustion and foreboding defeat, torn by what was unfolding around him. His only hope was that the others had safely escaped. Little did he realize that one had not.

20 Games That Should Be in an Xbox Classic
Tumblr media
Nintendo is making a lot of news right now with its upcoming follow up to the NES Classic, the SNES Classic. Regardless of the way that Nintendo has been handling the release of these classic consoles, this is a pretty good idea to not only provide an easy way to play classic video games, but a way to give these games renewed interest. However, there are other companies that are deserving of going forward with this classic console idea and Microsoft could do this with its original Xbox console. Online play would probably be left out but a miniature original Xbox with 20 games and four controllers for $100 would be amazing! Here’s the titles I think should be included.
Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. The definitive series for the company is the Halo series and without question, both game for the console need to be included. Local multiplayer was the name of the game with Halo: Combat Evolved and even without online multiplayer, Halo 2 is a blast offline. Not to mention that Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign is arguably one of the best in the franchise to date.
Fable: The Lost Chapters
The definitive RPG for the console, the original Fable is a memorable title that is essential to this console. You have numerous quests to complete and depending on how you decide to resolve them will determine whether you are a hero to be praised or a villain to be feared. With a variety of melee weapons, crossbows, and magic spells all at your disposal during combat, there’s a lot to enjoy here.
Ninja Gaiden Black
Arguably the quintessential action game for the console, Ninja Gaiden Black is one of the greatest hack and slash games ever made. It’s tough as nails difficulty but rewarding and methodical combat is complimented by its beautiful graphics and varied environments.
Dead or Alive 3
One of the major partnerships Microsoft made was with Tecmo and Team Ninja. In addition to the aforementioned Ninja Gaiden Black, it yielded several Dead or Alive games. Dead or Alive 3 was the first to come to the console and it remains an exclusive. This mini-console needs a fighting game and this is arguably the best choice with its fast combat, fluid movement, and
Blinx the Time Sweeper and Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space
For better or worse, Blinx is tied to the original Xbox due to the character being Microsoft’s foray into the character driven platformer. While it may not be the best series, it’s an Xbox exclusive and feels distinctive to the console. The time manipulation mechanics are unique to the genre and there isn’t anything really quite like Blinx.
Psychonauts
One of the most underrated games of its time, this 3D platformer about a boy at a camp for psychics is a modern underground classic. Solid combat, cool abilities, numerous ways to upgrade, collectables that actually affect the lore and progress of your character, a distinctive art style, funny and charming characters, and more make this an easy pick to include in the console.
Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse
One of the more unique titles on the console, this exclusive had you play as a zombie named Stubbs as he goes on a wacky 50s inspired adventure infecting others and turning them into zombies. It’s weird powerups and zany sense of humor would make this a curious yet endearing addition to the Xbox Classic.
Jade Empire
BioWare was in top form with its RPGs with titles such as Neverwinter Nights, Baldur’s Gate, and of course, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Unfortunately, KOTOR would be too difficult to get due to the Star Wars license. However, with its dialogue choices as well as its diverse real time combat, Jade Empire is not a bad substitute.
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
Beloved by the Xbox community, this flight game puts players into an action packed adventure as you play in an alternate 1930s fighting sky pirates. There aren’t a lot of games with an arcade casual approach to dogfighting and this is one of the most memorable. Although the online features would not be available, there’s still plenty to enjoy here.
Burnout 3: Takedown
You might notice that great Xbox racing games like Project Gotham Racing and Forza Motorsport aren’t on this list and that’s due to licensing issues I think they would have. However, Burnout 3 doesn’t have license cars and doesn’t have that problem. I’m totally fine with that because with its arcade style controls and the infinite fun that is Crash mode, it’s arguably the best racing game on the console.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
The original Xbox port of Morrowind was a very important release for the Xbox as it brought the franchise to a lot of players who hadn’t played it before. Often considered to be the best in the franchise, this would give the Xbox Classic a lot of value as this is a big game. I would make this the Game of the Year edition with the expansion packs so the value is even greater.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
A fantastic action adventure title with precise climbing and platforming, deliberate combat, and time bending mechanics. This is the first in what became a trilogy of games for the console, and returned to prominence this long forgotten franchise. One of the many great games Ubisoft released on the Xbox, this unfortunately would be the only game from them since the rest of Ubisoft’s most recognizable games for the Xbox were best online.
Full Spectrum Warrior
Xbox games seem like they focus on having you shoot things in a wartime environment but here’s a game that showed that you can do more than just that. A real-time tactics game, you order your two squads around the battlefield and control the map with constant suppressing fire. Again, the online multiplayer won’t be available but the campaign stands on its own.
Phantom Dust
A fan favorite of the most hardcore of Xbox gamers, Phantom Dustrecently had a free re-release on Windows 10 and Xbox One. However, the Xbox Classic would be a great way to introduce this strange action strategy card collecting title to a wider audience.
Voodoo Vince
Another game that recently got remastered, this exclusive 3D platformer can be played in its original glory on the Xbox Classic. It has a unique mechanic in that you hurt yourself in order to hurt your enemies, as Vince is a Voodoo doll. An interesting game that would be one of the more obscure releases in the roster of games.
Jet Set Radio Future
Sega and Microsoft had a great relationship during the original Xbox days and they got a couple of releases I feel should be included, the first being the sequel to Jet Set Radio, Jet Set Radio Future. Skate around on rollerblades and tag up the streets of Tokyo-to to disrupt the establishment in this colorful and unique game on the Xbox.
Panzer Dragoon Orta
The second game by Sega in this collection, Panzer Dragoon Orta is the final entry in the Panzer Dragoon series and is a fantastic rail shooter title. Beautiful graphics, intense gameplay, and tough difficulty, this is a blast to play! The game features a grading system for added replay value as well as the original Panzer Dragoon for the Sega Saturn. So this is actually a two in one!
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher’s Bay
One of the best looking titles on the console, Riddick: Escape from Butcher’s Bay is a landmark title on the console and a must inclusion for the Xbox Classic. Mixing first person shooting, platforming, and stealth, it’s genre mixing and polish served as a predecessor to how games were made during the Xbox 360 era as well as today.
And there are my picks. Because I’m assuming this console wouldn’t have online play, I left out titles like Rainbow Six 3, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and the MechAssault series. However, if online play were to be included, then those game would definitely be included. Now I want to here from you! What titles would you like to see on an Xbox Classic? Let me know in the comments below! Peace and Love, Gamers and Players! Colorwind out.
