"...have any questions?" the Director asks as she finishes informing the brand new Reclaimers of what their new job will entail, as well as the fee she'd just had Davenport pay them.
"I've got one," Taako offers. "As far as we know, is there a bad Bureau of Balance?"
"A Bureau of Imbalance?" Magnus adds, grinning as he nods.
"Just general bad guys?" Merle agrees.
The Director exhales. "Of sorts, yes. To the best of our knowledge, the group that created the Grand Relics, known as the Red Robes for the bright crimson robes they were known for, are all but gone. The Red Robes were a group of powerful wizards, warlocks, and other magic users, and they created the eight relics according to the school they had the most affinity for. If you ever run into any of them, it's imperative you run away."
"So they're still around, then?" Merle checks.
"Most of them are not, no."
"Sooo, again, they're still around?" Taako says, raising an eyebrow.
The Director looks between them, her gaze measured. "I suppose I shouldn't hide it from you, as Reclaimers," she decides. "I'm telling the truth - most of the Red Robes are no longer in existence. The entire Bureau knows about them, and the standing order to run, but due to the danger it poses, few know about the greater threat."
"And that is...?" Magnus gestures for her to continue.
"The story of the Red Robes isn't well known to most of the world," she says, getting up to look out a window. "Of course, that's partially due to the Voidfish. As I'd told you before, the only way to stop the war for the relics was to make the world forget, and that included what was already well-known about the group. I only have what knowledge I've been able to piece together about them. On their own, they're dangerous enough. That said, there's a threat to this world that's greater than the Red Robes.
"In the bits and pieces I've heard, there's a reason this group fell. The Grand Relics, once word spread of their power, were highly sought after. The Red Robes tried to hide them, but gradually lost each item they'd created. One of them became enraged over their loss, and decided to take matters into her own hands. The destruction of the group was due to this being turning on the rest. She was crazed, determined to recover what they'd lost by any means necessary, even if that meant taking out the rest of the Red Robes.
"The rumors about this being say that she's a warlock to something with power never seen otherwise on this plane, and that she causes destruction wherever she goes as she searches for the Grand Relics. I don't know how much of this is true," the Director adds, turning back to the new Reclaimers. "What I do know, however, is I've encountered someone who matches her description, and she is indeed bent on reclaiming the relics, no matter the cost. She's been named the Black Opal."
"'The Black Opal'? Isn't that a Goosebumps story or something?" Merle frowns.
"I think it's a separate series," Magnus disagrees.
"And it's called the Black Lagoon," Taako adds, snorting. "You know, creatures of?"
"Oh. Is that where the name came from?" Merle blinks.
The Director looks like she's resisting the urge to drag a hand down her face. "No. Black opal is a gemstone," she answers. "I hope you never have to meet her, but if you did, you'd understand why she's been called such."
"Is she made of the stuff or something?" Taako snorts.
"Or something," she confirms, expression grim. "It's impossible to know exactly what that substance is, but that gemstone is the closest description I can give. If you ever run into the Black Opal - and again, I dearly, dearly hope you never do - you must run as fast and far as you can. I don't want to risk losing anyone to her mad destruction."
"I'm sure we could take her," Magnus argues.
"No," the Director says forcefully. "Your direct orders are to run, if you ever see her. That's it. Do not engage, do not try to reason with her. Run."
"Okay, okay," Taako says, waving a hand. "We get it, we see the spooky robe, we run. You talked about a gachapon thing earlier, can we get going?"
She scrutinizes each of them for a long moment before exhaling. "So long as you've truly etched that command into your brains, then yes," she replies, sitting back at her desk. "Davenport will show you how to get there."

Between Daylight and Darkness
Chapter 6
<Previous Next>
Ao3
Being the elder of the largest hearthstone community on this continent came with a litany of responsibilities, some outspoken and many more tacit. One of which was keeping a cool head and level temperament even in times of crisis.
Kanjigar falling and there being no trace of a new Trollhunter for days certainly counted as a crisis.
Glancing around his workshop, Vendel confirmed that he was indeed alone before placing a hand on the wall, searching for a small, hidden compartment.
Dealing with such troubles when they arose steadily wore at his nerves, but Vendel accepted these burdens wholeheartedly. The position of a leader was never one he sought out, but time and time again he found no one else willing to fulfill the responsibilities no one else stepped up to. He was no trollâs master, Vendel was simply willing to do what needed to be done.
But that didnât mean he couldnât allow himself a quick reward now that the most dire urgency had passed.
Vendel pulled a small stone box out of the cubby in the wall, opening it to reveal a dark amber bottle. Uncorking the bottle he gave the contents an appreciative sniff before taking a deep swig. Warmth blooming in his stomach as he swallowed.
A vintage from the old country, not overly strong but of the highest quality, and if there was ever a time to indulge himself with a nip it was now.
After several unbearably tense days the new Trollhunter had been discovered, and while the work had only just begun, all of Trollmarket could breathe a collective sigh of relief at the presence of their new champion and the assurance of the amuletâs continuity.Â
Recorking the bottle, Vendel stepped over and placed it on the corner of his work table. Part of him longed to pour the contents into a flagon, spend all evening sipping and savoring the fine taste, but he couldnât allow himself such luxury just yet.
The new Trollhunterâs training had to begin immediately. Vendel didnât dare to dream that they were close to Kanjigarâs level of skill, but surely they couldnât be as young as some of the rumors claimedâ
A soft thudding echoed in from the hall, Venedel swiftly replacing the mead in its hiding place, glancing over just in time to see AAARRRGGHH lumbering into the dwell with a large noisy sack clutched in one hand.
âHumans,â AAARRRGGHH pointed his free hand at the sack, its contents shouting and squirming within the canvas âCaught,â
âGet your foot out of my face!â
âYour elbowâs in my gut!â
âHang on hang on hang on, Iâve got a swiss army keychainââ
In an instant the pleasant tingle from the mead evaporated âYou brought the humans here!?â
AAARRRGGHH blinked, glancing back and forth between Vendel and the sack with a deeply uncomfortable expression. Vendel bit back a groan.
AAARRRGGHH was far from a foolish troll, indeed one did not rise to the rank of general by being a half wit, but his tendency to follow tasks he was given to the letter rather than using his own intuition to follow through often led to problems, problems that often lead Vendel to headaches.
âWell no matter, take them to the surface andââ
A loud ripping sound startled Vendel into silence, glancing over just in time to see a wide split open up in the side of the bag and four humans come tumbling out, landing on the floor in a heap of yelps and grumbles.
AAARRRGGHH blinked down at them then looked up at Vendel helplessly.
Vendel pinched the stone between his eyes and grumbled a curse, muttering at AAARRRGGHH in common trollish.
âStand in front of the entrance so they canât leave the dwell,â
Chasing after a bunch of stray humans was the last thing Vendel wanted to do right now. Theyâd gather them back up once they had more hands to help them do it. For now theyâd just ensure that they didnât run loose in the market.
AAARRRGGHH nodded back at him before subtly shuffling to the side and blocking off the cave entrance. The humans appeared to take no notice, clamoring to their feet and starting to very noisily explore their surroundings.
âHoly shish kebabs, what is this place!?â
âWhere are weâŚ.â
âIt looks like some kind of underground workshop,â
âI see feldsparâ holy heck is that entire wall citrine!?â
Vendel pointedly ignored the humans as they spread out throughout his dwell, biting his tongue even when they started to fiddle with his tools and thumb through his manuscripts with their grimy, fleshy fingers. Any attention he gave them would only serve to rile them up even further. The best thing to do with the humans was ignore them untilâ
A soft poke in his side had Vendel whipping around with a glare, sending one of the humans, stout with orange hair, hastily scurrying away from him.
Merlin give him patience, was it too much to ask to have the new Trollhunterâs advent go smoothlyâ
âVendel I hope youâve prepared yourself,â Blinkousâ voice echoed in from the entrance tunnel âOur Trollhunter is here!â
AAARRRGGHH stepped to the side, allowing Blinkous and a smaller figure in shining silver armor to step into the dwell.
âAllow me to introduce our new Trollhunter, Jim! Son of Bah-bu-rah,â
Vendel had hoped the claims of the Trollhunterâs youth were exaggerations, the amulet of Daylight couldnât truly choose a whelp. But to his horror the Trollhunter appeared exactly as young as witnesses claimed.
He fought to keep a grimace off his face. He needed to keep his composure, if only for the sake of the trolls around him. But titans below it was obscene to see that armor wrapped around such a youngster. Soft looking stone, tusks and horns blunted, Vendel had half a mind to grab this Jim by the scruff and drag him back to his parentsâ
Vendel gripped his staff and pulled in a discreet breath to steady himself. Whatâs done was done, a Trollhunter chosen is never unchosen, as scandalous as their new hunterâs age was the only thing to do was to provide him training andâ
âGuys!â Jim raced into the dwell, wide smile splitting his face, and to Vendelâs shock the humans scurried up to meet him.
âIâm so glad youâre all ok!â
âIâm glad you got away from tall dark and ugly,â
There was more chatter among the five of them, four humans and one troll, but Vendel heard none of it. Turning swiftly towards Blinkous, whoâs utterly hang jawed expression told him that he was just as shocked at this development as Vendel was.
From what heâd understood the humans just happened to be in the area and ran into Bular, at which point the new Trollhunter jumped in to defend them. But seeing them interact soâŚso carelesslyâŚ
The sout human prodded their elbow into the Trollhunterâs side, the Trollhunter barking out a laugh and swatting their shoulder. All five still smiling and relaxed.
Theyâd met long before this night, precisely how long ago Vendel couldnât say, but long enough that the Trollhunter trusted them implicitly, more than any troll should ever trust a human. Vendelâs stomach started to develop a painful pinch, just what sort of upbringing had this stripling been through that would encourage them to form such inappropriateâÂ
âWhere are they!?â
Booming footsteps echoed in from the tunnel, startling the humans and young hunter into silence, Blinkous and AAARRRGGHH staggering back in shock, the groan that had been building in Vendelâs throat finally escaping.
Of course, fates forbid he only have to deal with one dilemma at a time.
Draal shoved his way past Blinkous into the dwell, red eyes narrowing when they spotted the smaller troll wrapped in armor.
Jim and the humans stiffened under the scrutiny.
âSo youâre the new TrollhunterâŚâ Draal said with a growl, prowling around him.
âUhhhâŚâŚâ Jim looked down at himself and jerked his shoulders up and down âI guess?â
Draal snorted, coming up to Vendelâs side âTheyâre clearly too young, the amulet should be borne by a full grown troll, not a whelp like this,â
A sentiment Vendel certainly didnât disagree with, but the fact was there simply wasnât anything he or anyone else could do to change things.
He reached up and clapped a hand on Draalâs shoulder, forcing the younger troll to lean down and look him in the eyes âDraal, you know as well as I do that a troll chosen by the amulet is never unchosen. And while this choice might beâŚunconventional we mustââ
âExcuse me,â
Both Vendel and Draal glanced down to see one of the humans, brown skin and dark hair with a streak of blue, approaching them.
âHey there, so I noticed you guys toss the words âtrollâ and âTrollhunterâ around a lot. I was just wondering if you could explain a bit what they mean?â
Vendel opened his mouth but Draal beat him to it.
âWe are trolls,â Draal said with a growl âIâm a troll,â he pointed towards himself âHeâs a troll,â a thumb towards Vendel âThey are all trolls!â a hand thrown in the direction of Blinky, AAARRRGGHH, and Jim.
âWaitâŚâ Jim slowly pulled himself to full height, raising a hand to point inwards towards his own chest âThatâs what I am? The stone skin and the horns make me aâŚtroll?â
One of Draalâs eyes twitched.
âCorrect,â he whipped an arm up and stabbed a finger in his direction âAnd that amulet and the armor it summons belong to the Trollhunter,â
âOkâŚwow, so Iâm a trollâŚâ
âGuess youâll have to return all your were-gargoyle business cards,â the dark skinned human said with a laugh.Â
âWait, you have a Troll-hunter?â the blue haired human spoke up again âBecause if youâre all trolls does that mean you hunt yourselves orââ
They were cut off by a huff and a snarl from Draal, the trollâs patience clearly at an end âHow much longer must these fleshbags remain here?â
âHey I donât call you gravel face donât call me fleshbagâŚâ the human with the longest hair muttered.
âQuite right,â Blinkous stepped forward, holding another large sack in front of him âAlright, everyone in, weâll have you back to the surface in no time,â
None of the humans moved, eyeing the bag uneasily, Jim stepped past them, situating himself between the humans and Blinkous.
âOk, no bags here,â
âHuman feet have never sullied the stones of Trollmarket!â Draal said with a growl.
âOk, wow, canât believe you just said that,â the dark skinned human said.
âLook,â Jim moved until he was standing between Draal and the humans âThe five of us are a package deal here. So no more âfleshbagâ talk or throwing people into sacks,â
Draal growled while Vendel was taken aback.
The Trollhunterâs behavior towards their humans, how casual they were with each otherâŚ. He had a sinking feeling that the striplingâs upbringing was more enmeshed in human society than any proper trollâs should be. Perhaps this was why the amulet had called to him, to lead him away from the humans kingdoms of the surface and back underground where he beloâ
âHumans have no place in our hallowed home,â Draal snarled âAs the one wearing that amulet you should desire to uphold the sanctity of Trollmarket more than any other,â
âBut Iâm human,â Jim blurted out.
The eye of every troll in the dwell landed on him in an instant, strained silence filling the dwell.
âHah!â Blinkous forced out an awkward laugh âOur new Trollhunter is a jokester, such a delightful spirit,â
âHe is clearly unwell and unfit to wield the amulet!â
âMaybe humansâŚ.stay?â
Vendel buried his forehead in his hand. Gorgus help him this was going to be a long night.
âOh right,â Jim snapped his fingers âToby do you have theââ
âOn it,â the stout human pulled something out of his bag and pointed it towards the Trollhunter. He gave the object a click, bathing the Trollhunter in violet light.
Wonderful, their new Trollhunter was a whelp whoâd clearly spent far too many of his formative years with humans whoâd filled his head with all sorts of nonsensical ideas. Was it the world that had gone mad or just himâ
There was a shift, so subtle Vendel thought he imagined it; then, slowly but surely, a change swept over the Trollhunter.
Stature shrinking, horns receding away, blue stone turning soft and pink.Vendelâs mouth going dry as he watched the transformation unfold before his eyes.
Now it was not a troll but a human that stood before them, still wrapped in the shining armor of the Trollhunter, amulet of Daylight affixed to their chest.
Vendel was millennia old, heâd dealt with many challenges that left him frustrated, disgruntled, or even exhausted, but for the first time in more centuries than he could remember Vendel found himself chilled to the bone.
The human spread their arms, armor clinking as they didâ
Blasphemous, heretical, to have that sacred armor worn by one who could twist themselves between stone and fleshâ
And let out a small laugh âTah dahâŚâ
No one moved; Blinkous, AAARRRGGHH, and Draal staring at the Trollhunter in frozen horror. An emotion Vendel himself was also feeling in just as great a measure, but he didnât let the terror and revulsion paralyze him as he rushed to Blinkousâ side, leaning down to hiss in his ear.
âGo get a gaggletack now!â

GRRRRRATATAATATAAAA
â
The bloodied handprints on white birch trees was the only nuance of Sunshines dying body, residing in the deeps of foliage, surrounded by the blues of Petunias and crimson of her spilt veins.
The mission had gone to utter shit, Graves betrayal stung. Chasing her out of safety and into the deeps of the forest.
A shadow had followed her without her realising, the fog of her tears impairing her vision.
She had stopped to breathe, resting for just a second before trekking forward, when the shadow had struck. Aiming their dagger for her neck, but she had felt it, sixth sense kicking in and stepping out of the way last second, twisting her body and putting a bullet in the fuckers skull before her could do more damage.
Las Almas was crawling with the things, Graves ordering a kill on sight for any member of 141.
The shadows body stopped limply, pushing both her and the corpse into a cluster of Petunias.
Hence where she was now. Kicking the body away from herself, attempting to push back up, to no avail. Arms giving out on her and falling to her wound. The gash in her side spewing a deep burgundy nto the delicate blue petals.
It almost felt poetic, the pretty flora glistening with blood and the dew of an old rain.
She sat against a fallen tree trunk behind her, panicked fingers scouring her pockets for her small first aid kit. Finding it tucked into one of her self sown patches, she places it to her side.
Pulling the emergency tabs on her vest, she sheds it like a second skin. Pulling of her shirt, it sticking sickeningly to her open wound.
Sunshine knew she should have called for help. Told anyone how the wound was getting no better. Her hands kept slipping and the tears kept coming. She stuffed her shirt into her mouth. Gathering her suture kit, the needle shook in her grasp. Blood coating a thick glove over her fingers.
She cried out into the fabric, tears streaming fast when she pulled the first stitch taught.
Gagging and sobbing, her heart working overtime to make up for the lost blood. She was getting weaker, she wouldnât be able to stay awake for much longer.
The blood not flowing steady pools at her feet, was rushing past her ears. The ringing of tinnitus grew louder.
The winds screamed around her. Flora crying through the shake of leaves. Stars blinking in worrisome. The moon stared at her, ever watching. Waiting to see if anybody would come for her, if anyone was watching Sunshine like she was.
âSunshine, how copy?â
Sunshineâs ministrations paused, she couldnât take the fabric out of her mouth, or she would bite through her tongue.
His voice felt like a dying light. A promise of her survival that was really only leading her to a faster death.
âSunshine, How copy.â She kept at it, stitch after messy stitch. Crying and coughing into her make-shift gag.
âSunshine, answer god damn it!â He sounded frantic now. Gunshots heard on the receiving end of her comms.
Sunshine tightened the last stitch, breathing heavy through her nose, sniffling and almost suffocating herself.
Tying the last stitch in place, she pulled the ball of shirt out of her mouth, taking in gasping breathes and sobbing openly into the night sky.
The Moon flickered in and out of her vision, pitying the sight of her.
âFuck, answer me!â
âIâm alive! Iâm fucking,â She sobbed again, fuck she was going to die here. ââIâm alive.â
Sunshine sounded weak. The sounds around her muffled as her adrenaline seeped out of her.
âWhere are you.â Ghost sounded livid, livid but scared.
âIâm.. somewhere pretty?â She gave.
âHe needs a location to get taâ ya, lass.â Soap butted in.
âThe.. woods?â Her speech slowed, delayed and hesitant. Almost confused with what she was saying.
She looked to the sky, her blood mixed with the body next to her, swimming around the pretty flowers.
She looked gorgeous here, moonlight hitting perfectly onto her face, the clearing she resided in surrounded her, isolating from the world outside.
There was a whistle of noise further down the hill, a tune she recognised faintly.
She whistled back, talking to the trees around her.
The whistles grew louder, and more frequent. She was losing breath. Her response getting shorter with each second.
The distinct sound of rustling gained her attention, a tall figure appearing through the thick bush of the forest. âSunshine.â
âGhost?â
âSunshine.â He rushed towards her, taking in the gruesome sight of her near bear abdomen. The cut was deep, likely that of a dagger. The stitches were messy and terribly done. Barely doing what theyâre supposed to by keeping the wound closed. But doing nothing for her comfort.
The flowers around her covered in her blood, shining in the pale moonlight.
He quickly grabbed the t-shirt discarded next to her, applying apt pressure to her wound. She groaned in pain.
âYou really know how to treat a woman.â
He huffed, glad her humour hasnât died. He clicked his comms.
âFound âer Soap.â
âHow is she?â
She looked up at him expectantly. He averted his eyes.
âNot good.â He said lowly.
âIâll try and get in contact with Price, call for evac to send out yer way.â
âGet âere quick.â
âSo you do like me?â
âI like you alive.â
Sunshine coughed a laugh, soft smile on her features.
A click was heard through the comms, signalling the disconnection from Soap, to call Price.
She feels like sheâs dying. The stars showering him in a soft light.
He looks like he would be the man you meet in death. Greeting him in a friendly hello.
Her conscience was slipping from her. Ghost speaking sharp words. âStay awake, soldier. Thatâs a fucking order.â
âIâm so tired L.T.â
âI know, sunshine. Stay awake for me.â
Her eyes fluttered, keeping them open was proving to be more and more difficult.
âEyes on me, thatâs it. Good.â
Sunshineâs eyes trained on him. The skull of his mask speckled with blood. Eyes a stunning depth to them. He looked pretty like this.
âYouâre a real stunner, yknow that L.T?â
âAh, all the more reason to keep your eyes open then, huh?â
âMm, I like looking at you.â
âJesus christ,â He breathed the phrase, dipping his head a little lower towards her. â,Donât go saying stuff like this on me now. Wait until youâre all fixed up, aye?â
She smiled up at him dopey.
Her smile suddenly faded. She canât be flirtinâ like this, heâs a taken man.
âYouâre fucking stupid for hidinâ this from me, Sunny.â He scolded her softly, he was angry but she was so so weak in front of him.
âDidnât wanâ seem weak.â
She glanced down at her wound, still covered by his scarred hands and rough fabric. âFixed myself up dandy. Knew I dinâ need help.â
âYou did need help.â
He sighed, brows furrowing.
âYou need to let me help you.â
A sudden pang of pain shoots up her side and she coughs, body tensing. The tears slowly starting again. She felt pathetic.
âI donât wannâ die, Simon.â
âI want someone to go home to.â
âI wanna go home.â She whines the word, sobs it even. She hiccuping again and with every movement it causes pain. Spilling more tears. Itâs an endless, ugly cycle. He was watching her spiral until her body would eventually give out.
âSunshine.â His voice was firm, a stability in her shaking mind.
âIâm sorry.â
âShut up.â
âOkay.â
She counted her breaths, lining them up with his. He waited patiently for her to calm down.
A silence settles over them. The soft assurances sheâs alive, and her responses equally as soft.
âWhat do you think about Birdy?â
He stuttered, cringing at the question.
âWhat about her?â
âDo you think sheâs someone worth coming home to?,â
She paused, soft eyes lifting up to him.
âYou think sheâs someone youâd come home to?â
Sheâs not jealous, understanding more so. The heart wants what it wants. Not his fault if he wants Birdy. And who was she to deny him? He hated her. Worse then anyone ever had. She would do nothing to stop it if he ever perused Birdy. Because she wanted someone who understands him. Who knows him like Birdy does to love him. Sheâs not that.
It was a harmless question, but it struck him nauseous. It was a sore spot for him, but anything to keep your slipping conscious put.
âNo. Sheâs not mine to come home too.â
âOh.â
âAnd even if she was, I donât think I would want that. I donât think sheâs my endgame.â
Heâs looking at her like sheâs something to pray to. The light to everything bad about himself. Like being even near you betters him as a man.
âWhy?â Soft, doe like.
Evac arrives, Fussing over your injury and whisking you away before he can respond. Two medics wheeling you off, while two more check your vitals.
He sighs, shuddering while he drags a hand across his mask.
âBecause sheâs not you.â

Fawful Month day 19: âď¸AU
Fawful from the Sunshine AU! I always wanted to give him a proper design and this was the perfect opportunity!
In this AU of mine, Fawful survives the events of BIS and slowly learns to accept his new life while simultaneously learning to let go of his past, something that he did get to do, but wasn't really fleshed out in my BIS headcanon!
With this design I wanted Fawful to look different, yet still recognizable. I really wanted his clothes to be wide and his hair to look a biiiit more messy, to show that he's now a lot more carefree and relaxed!
I actually really like talking about this so thank you for that prompt. I'll make proper art of it someday :3

tell me all about New James Mace series, please
So, I owe @resurrectedlily a lot for this. She helped me come up with the idea.
Mace and Reader are forensic scientists, Reader new to the team. Mace is grumpy and didn't sign up to babysit, however slowly he comes to realize how smart and amazing he thinks she really is.
Mace is fighting his own demons, trying to accept there are some crimes he will never solve. The series will focus on his own battles and boogie men, and how he handles the possible loss of reader at a few points.
@sarahdonald87 hereâs the Mace story!

some more random sunshine au (edyn swaps with gill) things before i go sleep cause my mind is going feral rn:
chip stays a bit of a bastard throughout and his real true bastard arc lasts a little longer cause edyn isn't as focused on morality as gill
edyn fully believes niklaus is just a good guy trying to help out until like the desire island and edison stuff is revealed
cause edyn's quite a bit older than the guys, especially chip, they worry she's gonna take the role as leader (and by they worry i mean chip worries) but she's actually fine not being the captain. she doesn't even really want to be a pirate at first, but then she's sort of won over to the idea. they still all become co-captains in the edison arc
whilst edyn is quite protective of ollie, she doesn't particularly mind about chip keeping him along for so long cause she's more focused on find out what's happening with gill, with the navy and with her being the sun champion
felipe ends up hating chip after chip pulled from the deck of many things. same sort stuff happens, except he leaves earlier cause chip isn't taking no shit
edyn sketches all the time and ends up drawing all the crew members. to begin with she draws chip slightly wrong and exaggerates his annoyingness cause she lowkey doesn't like him, but after a while she stops with that. she draws gillion sometimes, but only rarely cause it's painful thinking about all the ways she's failed him. she draws jay the most

Between Daylight and Darkness
Chapter 5
<Previous Next>
Ao3
Over his many years in Trollmarket, and even Dwoza before that, Blinky had inadvertently found himself at the root of several market-wide disturbances. Usually as a result of his attempts to root out conspiracies. While Blinky considered a temporary chaos a necessary sacrifice in rooting out hated conspiracies from their market, others did not share this view, namely VendelâŚamong others.
But while today's events hadnât been the result of one of Blinkyâs attempts to uproot a conspiracy, the fact remained that this had the potential to be the largest catastrophe attached to his name yet.
Blinky cautiously peeked outside the stairway entrance, the cacophony of noise having greeted him halfway up the stairs, dreading what he might see.
Dozens of trolls rushed about, nervous chatter passing back and forth in voices ranging from hushed to booming. The word Trollhunter repeating again and again, underneath that was the occasional muttered âfleshbagâ. Both the young Trollhunter and wayward humans had been lost somewhere in the crush of the crowd and the maze of buildings. The absence of their new Trollhunter and a lack of new information was making the crowdâs energy rise to a fever pitch. It would surely boil over unless someone stepped in and calmed them down.
And unfortunately it looked as though that someone was him.
Blinky climbed to the top of a large boulder, clearing his throat in preparation of raising his voice âFriends friends settle down! No need for a panic,â
Not every eye in the crowd turned towards him, but enough of them did that Blinky had to stop himself from squirming under their gaze.
âThe new Trollhunterâs been chosen!â a voice called out from the back of the crowd âI saw them! They were here and then they ran off!â
Folding his two left arms behind his back Blinky used a right to point at the shouter âRight you are. The new Trollhunter is here, AAARRRGGHH and I escorted them to our fair market and their training will start post haste. So no cause for an uproar. You may all go about your busââ
âThey canât be the new Trollhunter!â a new voice closer to the front cut in âTheyâre too damn young! Practically still a whelp!â
âWell you seeââ
âAnd what about the fleshbags!? Howâd they get in here?â
âAh thatâs an easy explanation, our new Trollhunter was protecting them from Bularââ
The second the Gumm Gumm princeâs name left his mouth a spike of alarm shot through the crowd, murmurings turning to panicked shouts and roars.Â
Blinky froze, one hand still perched in midair.
Oh dearâŚ.
âBut never fear! Bular was halted by the wards! Thereâs no danger hereââ
His voice was lost in the din of the crowd, the trolls before him working themselves up into a frenzy, threatening toâ
âWhat is the meaning of this!âÂ
In an instant every troll present in the square fell silent, Blinky included, swiveling towards the new voice. The crowd parting like all of the sea as Trollmarketâs elder made his way through.
âWhat sort of calamity justifies this ruckus?â
Both sets of hands netted behind Blinkyâs back as he grinned down sheepishly at the approaching Vendel.
âAh well itâs quite simple really, AAARRRGGHH and I found the new Trollhunter on the surface. They were in the process of rescuing a group of humans from Bular. Me and my mountainous companion then guided them to the safety of Trollmarket whereâŚwhereâŚummmâŚâ
âWhere you lost them,â Vendel said flatly âAnd unleashed a group of panicked humans upon our peaceful market,â
Blinky forced his grin so wide it hurt.
Vendel let out a low groan and kneaded the skin between his eyes with one hand, after a few moments he lifted the hand away from his face, jabbing a finger at Blinky then down directly in front of him.
Guts twisting in on themselves, Blinky got down from his perch and approached, AAARRRGGHH joining them until the three were bunched together.
âOnly you could turn a simple retrieval mission into complete pandemoniumâŚâ Vendel muttered with a shake of his head.
âBut at least we found the Trollhunter!â Blinky cut in âAnd brought them safely here, both them and the amulet out of reach of the dark clutches of Bular,â
âBelieve me I know,â Vendel raised his head to look back at him âAnd I am more grateful than words can say for your doing so,â
Blinky felt all six of his eyes go wide âReally!?â
Vendel flashed him a rare smile âYes, but now that the immediate danger is past we must do damage control,â
He pointed the head of his staff at Blinky âFind where in Trollmarket our new hunter has run off to,â the staff pivoted up towards AAARRRGGHH âYou gather the stray humans. I will settle the crowd, weâll meet back up at my dwell with the Trollhunter to discuss what comes next,â
Both Blinky and AAARRRGGHH nodded affirmatively at this then began to move away to carry out their assigned tasks. Blinky made it a few steps then paused and turned back
âAh! Vendel, what shall we do aboutâŚâ he trailed off, the words sticking in his throat.
âAbout what Blinkous?â
âAboutâŚDraal,â
The mood between the three trolls shifted instantly, a shadow falling across Vendelâs face.
âWe shall deal with Draal when the time comes, for now letâs focus on the problems we can control,â
With a quick nod and a heavy heart, Blinky turned away and left the others behind as he headed down to narrower, less populated corridors of Trollmarket. Scanning every alley and crevice as he went.
Now if he was a wayward Trollhunter where would he hide? He was familiar enough with the various avenues to guess at which corridors to start, but Trollmarket was vast with many hidden nooks and crannies, more than enough places for a young troll to hide. Thankfully the commotion at the main entryway had attracted a large chunk of the marketâs population, leaving the rest of the market sparse, so he wouldnât have to fight through crowds while on his search.
Not to mention fewer trolls to hover over their new hunter and frazzle them more than they already were.
Reaching a crossroads, Blinky paused as he surveyed the paths ahead of him, tapping his chin thoughtfully. After a moments debate he chose his path and hurried on ahead.
It was no wonder the whelp had become overwhelmed and run off. There were full grown trolls that would quake at the responsibility of bearing the amulet of Daylight, to say nothing of how an unblooded stripling would react to such a monumentalâ
A blue flash in the corner of Blinkyâs eye stopped him in his tracks, pulling his attention to a small alley. Moving quickly, he hurried over to the narrow stone corridor, sending a quick plea to Gorgus that his search was at an end.Â
And perhaps Gorgus did decide to take pity on him because the Trollhunter sat just inside the alley. They were huddled on the ground holding their knees to their chest, breathing so fast and hard their whole body was quivering. Blinky fought to keep from wincing but couldnât quite keep the grimace off his face.
This troll was so so young. Tusks small and horns rounded, nary a scar or a gouge to be seen. Where had this young troll come from, let alone come across the amulet? Blinky was familiar with all the whelps and striplings in Trollmarket and this fellow wasnât any of them. The only thing he could think of was that they were part of a clan of surface dwelling nomads. But who would struggle with a whelp on the surface when a protected market full of resources was right below their feetâŚ
Blinky shook his head. However it happened the amulet had chosen this stripling and they were here. It wasnât within Blinkyâs power to lift this burden from their young shoulders, but he could provide them sanctuary and the training to grow into their calling.
He cleared his throat softly, just enough to grab their attention.
The stripling stiffened, instantly going stone still on the ground.
âAre you alright?â Blinky spoke quickly, hoping to stop the young Trollhunter from running off in a panic again âYou werenât injured in your struggle with Bular were you?â
âNo Iââ the stripling gulped down a deep breath âIâ Iâm fine. ThatâŚBular guy, is heâŚgone?â
âFor all intents and purposes, yes. He cannot penetrate Trollmarketâs wards, you, and those humans you rescued, are safe down here,â
The stripling flopped back against the wall, arms and legs tumbling limp at their sides, practically melting into the stone, a deep shuddering breath escaping their chest.
âOh, oh good, theyâreâŚtheyâre safe,â
The corners of Blinkyâs mouth twitched up into a smile. To have such care for even humans, going out of his way to rescue them from Bular when many a troll would have let them be slaughtered rather than risk their own stone. The young troll in front of him was still very much a stranger, but Blinky knew they had a kind heart. A thing which would serve them well as Trollhunter.
âSoâŚthis place isâŚTrollmarket?â
In an instant the smile dropped off of Blinkyâs face. The striplingâs unfamiliarity with their surroundings wasâŚtroubling. Even exiles and surface dwelling nomads were still aware of Trollmarket. The only reasons he could think of such a young troll being completely oblivious wereâŚtragic ones.
Blinky shook his head and stepped into the alley.
Well whatever their background was, this whelp had a home and community now.
âCorrect, Trollmarket is hearth and home to many a troll,â he extended a hand down towards the stripling âIncluding you,â
The stripling blinked at the offered hand before turning their gaze up towards Blinky âTâ troll, right,â
After a brief moment of hesitation they gripped the offered appendage and allowed Blinky to assist in pulling them up, standing on shaky legs.
âI am known as Blinky, son of the Galadrigal clan, Trollmarketâs principal librarian and scholar. Might I have something to call you?â
âJâ Jim, son ofâŚBarbara?â
âWell then young Master Jim, I am sure you have many questions,â Blinky stepped backwards out of the alley and stretched out his two right arms âI am happy to provide you with answers. If you would be so kind as to follow me, I know where we can discuss these matters in private,â
Jim appeared startled at his words, but he nevertheless stepped out of the alley after him âThatâ that would be great, thanks,â
Blinky fought down another smile as he turned and began leading the new Trollhunter towards Vendelâs dwell. Feeling not entirely at peace, but lighter than he had since before Kanjigarâs fall.

Oh my gosh it's the baby! I love how you draw the development of his horn shape from rounded to curved. Not to mention his expressions are just killing me. Gonna just go ahead and stare at this for the next seven hours.
Rereading @rosemaidenvixen 's sunshine au gave me inspiration. This fanfic is amazing. I reread it every few months and impatiently wait for new chapters.
I'm not good with describing my feelings and thoughts
