Blue… we left Chicago the day after our wedding, which was also Mother’s Day… and started our new life … we drove thru the rocky mountains where we could see so much thru that roof… what an experience. Mama and Papa were very unhappy about our going so far away… the other end of the country might as well have been the other end of the world… it cost a fortune to telephone so we only did it once a week… to both our parents. We left many friends and family to go off by ourselves. Norb was transferred by Glidden to manage an office in Buena Park…and I worked there as well. I didn’t drive then so learned while out there. Norb’s uncle and aunt lived there and were so welcoming and wonderful to us. We lived in a little furnished apartment above a garage… there was a single woman living next door who had a very active social life… the walls were thin. In the yard were bushes with lemons and grapefruit… imagine that!.. right in the back yard. The owners lived in big house and were also very nice. I really didn’t know much about cooking so Norb was sometimes surprised by what I put on the table. I remember being so repulsed by a whole naked chicken… I could hardly stand it. I made a salmon soufflé once that had olives chopped into little pieces… I diligently took all the pits out (no such thing as pitted olives back then)… then folded them into all the egg whites.. Norb spent a lot of time picking every tiny bit of olive out… that’s how I found out he hated black olives, or any kind of olive. I remember asking of each new dish, how often would you like it.? And sometimes he would say once a year. I got pregnant with Paul and was expecting in October so after much discussion, we decided to move back to Chicago… we didn’t want our children growing up without grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. We stayed with my folks until we found out that there was an apartment for rent in Humboldt Park.. below Norb’s sister and brother in law… Dolores and Chester… it was one of those long narrow buildings… with huge living and dining rooms, tiny bedrooms and large bathroom… good size kitchen as well. After Paul was born I would walk to the park with him…it was a beautiful neighborhood then. Norb got a job at Blue Cross and could take public transportation… Chester upstairs worked two jobs … they had 5 children… and sometimes in the middle of the night I could hear his shoes falling off his feet. Their bedroom was right above ours.. That was a lovely apartment… we refinished a built in and had tons of friends who would come for dinner in that huge dining room. As the kobold slipped past her she turned to see Andric reach her, his coat flapping in the wind.

“Evening, madam,” he said with a polite bow.

Senci blinked in surprise, staring up at the grinning woman. He crossed his eyes, and sure enough...there was a splotch of tomato sauce on his snout.

As if on queue both of them broke into roaring laughter, Senci grabbing a rag and wiping his face with it.

Victoria had brought cheese this time. It was cut up into fine slices, in such a way that Senci hadn’t seen cheese presented.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” he commented, curiously peering at the cut up cheese.

Senci nodded, grabbing slices and beginning to lay them over the sauce-covered dough.

“Evenly, just like the sauce! Make sure it’s all spread out.”

“Yes ma’am.”

Soon enough, the cheese covered the sauce, everything seeming just about done. There was a bit of exposed dough around the edges, but Victoria assured Senci that it was supposed to be like that.

“Alright. One last thing…” Victoria grabbed a pinch of...something, and handed it to Senci.

Victoria gave the kobold a funny look. “Well...yes. That’s why I’m taking it to the oven.”

“How long it’s gonna take? How long’s it gonna take?” he asked excitedly. He still had no idea what they were making, but he couldn’t wait to find out.

The woman laughed. “Give it a few minutes. Why don’t you sit at the table with Andric? I’ll bring it out once it’s done.”

“Okay!”

As Senci turned and scampered off, Victoria called out to him one last time.

“Oh, and Senci!”

His head poked back around the doorframe. “Yes?”

“You did great today. Thank you for the help.”

He looked away bashfully. “Oh, it’s nothing, Miss Victoria! I like helping you.”

The dough had baked into a hard crust, the cheese all melted on top of the bread. The golden cheese on top of the browned bread...it was something to behold.

“Looks great, right?” she said with a cocky smile.
